OKLAHOMA 4-H AMBASSADOR ALUMNI Scholarship Donor: Oklahoma 4-H Ambassador Alumni

As a 4-H member, Susan Weckler delved into all aspects of the family and consumer sciences project area. She used the skills she learned through her project work, such as sewing, entrepreneurship and safety, to make a difference in others’ lives by participating in 475 hours of community service. She enjoyed promoting 4-H by sharing her passion for FCS with others.

CORTNEY EVANS

ACHIEVEMENT Scholarship Donor: Harold and Edith Shaw Memorial Endowment

Throughout the course of her seven-year 4-H career, Cortney Evans has taken the initiative to make the best better in Grady County. She has participated in approximately 200 community service projects and enjoys promoting 4-H to other youth. To encourage young children to join 4-H, Cortney established the first Cloverbud 4-H Club in her county.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “The leadership opportunities that 4-H has given me through serving as a local and county officer as well as being a State Healthy Living Ambassador have given me more confidence to volunteer and participate in more activities.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “One of the biggest skills I have gained through my 4-H career is the ability to speak in front of people. Being able to stand up in front of a large group of people and give a speech is a valuable life skill that will help me in college and throughout my adult life.”

ADVANCED ACHIEVEMENT Scholarship Donor: Vernon and Ronda McKown Endowment

During the six years of her 4-H career, Audrey Ochsner explored nearly all 4-H had to offer, whether it be through learning goat showmanship, competing in the National Consumer Judging Competition or attending National 4-H Conference. It was in leadership, however, where Audrey found her home. Through her collected project work, she has reached more than 48,000 individuals with the impact of 4-H.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “Through club, county, district and state leadership positions, I have learned what it means to truly communicate with others, and have found ways to connect with my peers and encourage them to continue to make their best better.”

ELVIN LINDLEY ADVANCED AGRICULTURE Scholarship Donor: Oklahoma LP Gas RM&S Commission

During her 11-year 4-H career, Sarah Armitage participated in numerous community service projects, reaching more than 2,000 youth and adults. Additionally, she spent more than 160 hours mentoring and assisting young beef exhibitors. Sarah’s favorite aspect of her 4-H career has been witnessing the growth and successes of the young livestock exhibitors she has mentored.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “Participating in speeches and demonstrations has taught me how to present my information in a professional manner and has given me confidence to speak in front of a group of people.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “I will use the confidence and communication skills I have developed as I pursue my career in agricultural communications. I plan to use the connections I have made in my beef project to help me enter the field of advertising and promoting the beef industry.”

TRENT GIBBS

ADVANCED CITIZENSHIP Scholarship Donor: Mike Synar Memorial Endowment

Trent Gibbs is passionate about rallying people together for a common cause. He is proudest of the statewide fundraisers he pioneered with the State 4-H Leadership Council: Oklahoma 4-H Hike for Change and Cloverthon. His fondest memories have been made with the Oklahoma 4-H Music Corps and as a member of the Council. Trent wrapped up his 4-H year serving as the 2018-2019 4-H president.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “I’m no longer afraid to have a conversation with someone who thinks differently. I want to see and judge every individual for who they are, not how they look or where they came from. That’s the beauty of 4-H — everyone is welcome, regardless of their appearance or interests, and everyone has the opportunity to succeed.”

KARINA FENG

ADVANCED FABRICS & FASHION Scholarship Donor: Wilma Wendt Pattillo Endowment

During her nine-year 4-H career, Karina Feng has certainly demonstrated her passion for serving others. She founded the Adult Clothing Protector service project and taught workshops for organizations including the HUGS Project, Little Dresses for Africa and Operation Gratitude. She has reached more than 20,000 people with her community activities and aspires to help other youth develop leadership skills.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “4-H’s emphasis on giving back to the community by making the best better has had a huge impact on my life. It made me realize that living a life dedicated to service is the best way to lead a fulfilled life.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “I have learned many skills through 4-H, but the most impactful skill that I have gained is public speaking. This skill in particular will serve me for the rest of my life as I enter college and join the workforce.”

ADVANCED FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES Scholarship Donors: OEAFCS & OAE4-HA

Sarah Walker has been an active 4-H member for eight years. She has participated in 64 community service projects, serving her community for more than 13,000 hours. She is most proud of her “Love, Sarah” project. Each month, she makes 70 tray favors for mobiles meals, which are then delivered to elderly members of the community. Since starting this project, she has created and delivered more than 7,000 tray favors.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “Developing leadership skills has had the biggest impact on my life. I have not only held leadership roles in 4-H, but also in school. The confidence I developed will benefit me as I continue in high school and look forward to pursuing a college degree.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “Many of the life skills I have learned through 4-H will help my in my future endeavors. Public speaking was always scary for me, but thanks to 4-H, public speaking is now a natural skill which will help me for the rest of my life.”

DANNIE REGNIER-NELSON

AGRICULTURE Scholarship Donor: Kunc Family Farms

Dannie Regnier-Nelson has loved farming since his first combine ride at the age of one. It was a natural fit for him to focus his 4-H project work in agriculture. Dannie started his 4-H project with three show sheep that followed him all around the yard. Today, he has grown into a remarkable youth leader in the industry. In addition to his passion for agriculture, Dannie enjoys shooting sports, and his favorite discipline is muzzleloader.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “4-H has grown my responsibility and work ethic.”

Scholarship Donors: OK Vegetation Management Association & Dr. Gary and Becky Stone

A six-year 4-H member from Logan County, Wyatt Hood has used his 4-H career as a platform to teach others about forestry, wildlife and soil conservation. He has shared his passion for the outdoors through countless workshops and speeches with more than 4,600 individuals. He said the most rewarding aspect of his project work is introducing urban youth to the forestry and wildlife industry.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “My biggest influence would be all the support that I have received within my club and county 4-H teams. I have always felt included, supported and encouraged so I could fulfill the goals I set out to accomplish.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “My 4-H experiences through forestry, wildlife and soil and conservation will help me continue to manage my family’s cattle farms and strengthen the land through various conservation programs and basic knowledge of land management.”

MADISON NICKELS

AOP FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE Scholarship Donor: Dr. Lynda Harriman

Throughout the course of her six-year 4-H career, Madison Nickels has participated in 44 community service projects and conducted workshops and educational booths reaching more than 2,700 youth and adults. Her favorite activity is working with younger 4-H members in her county and teaching them sewing techniques.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “The mentors and friends I have gained through 4-H have been the biggest influences on my life. The older 4-H members and Extension educators are always encouraging me and challenging me to try new things.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “The life skills I have gained through 4-H will stay with me and help me succeed. I have learned communication skills that have helped me grow into a leader. The organizational skills and team-building skills will also help me as I get older.”

REMINGTON WARD

AOP SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY Scholarship Donors: Charles and Betty Smith

During his 10-year 4-H career, Remington Ward excelled in the 4-H Science and Technology Project. He assisted with a statewide initiative to create computer science interest and opportunities for 4-H’ers and other youth. Remington has enjoyed mentoring junior 4-H members and seeing them design, build and code their own robots during workshops as well as watching them learn simple coding concepts.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “4-H has caused me to become confident and get out of my comfort zone. 4-H has taught me to speak with confidence and to teach others.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “I will use my leadership and public speaking skills throughout my life in leading research teams at college, in training colleagues at work and in volunteering and mentoring youth. I also will use the skills related to STEM and robotics in my future career and as a mentor to youth participating in robotics competitions or science fairs.”

AOP SMALL ANIMALS Scholarship Donor: Hesser Memorials

In Kallie Clifton’s eight years as a 4-H member, she has focused her project work in the areas of beef, poultry, horse, and leadership. Kallie has participated in many community service projects. Her favorite service projects are decorating veterans’ graves on Memorial Day, and contributing to her local homeless shelter through monthly donations.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “Without a doubt the public speaking project area has made me into the person I am today. I was very shy, and now I can speak comfortably in front of large crowds.”

BANCFIRST LEADERSHIP Scholarship Donor: BancFirst

Serena Woodard’s early 4-H career was centered around her love of dancing. Soon after, she developed a passion for agriculture. Serena has focused her 4-H project work on teaching others about the importance of agriculture through her Woodard’s Workshops. To date, she has reached nearly 40,000 youth through her hands-on workshops and has been nationally recognized for her exceptional 4-H career.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “The aspect that has influenced my life greatly is that 4-H feels more like a family than an after-school activity. No matter where life takes you, your 4-H family will always be there to lift your spirits.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “Through scheduling workshops, attending classes and entering contests, 4-H has taught me time management and work ethic. Because of this, I have become a stronger leader and role model for others to look up to.”

Throughout the course of his 10-year 4-H career, Will Shelby has participated in 35 community service projects and conducted 22 workshops reaching more than 800 individuals. He said his favorite 4-H activities were livestock judging and assisting younger 4-H members with their reasons and placings.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “Mr. David Sorrell was my 4-H educator from my first cloverbud meeting. He influenced me to grow in my leadership and citizenship skills, in my project work, livestock judging and as a person.”

Karen Weckler has been an active 4-H member since she was 9 years old. She has learned invaluable life skills through her family and consumer sciences project work, focusing on healthy living, cooking and decision making. Karen said her favorite 4-H experience was representing Oklahoma at the National FCS Skillathon contest in 2016.

A 10-year 4-H member from Pittsburg County, Bryce Wilson is passionate about positively impacting the lives of youth. She started the Take a Stand program, through which she advocated for anti-bullying in schools. She encourages younger 4-H members to get involved in all aspects of the 4-H organization.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “By creating the Take a Stand program, I now have no problem speaking and presenting workshops. Teaching workshops through the program helped me overcome my fear of public speaking.”

BARNES FAMILY Scholarship Donor: Barnes Family Endowment

During his 10-year 4-H career, Camden Cope participated in 50 community service projects and conducted 25 workshops and classes that reached more than 650 youth and adults. Camden enjoys working with all aspects of agriculture, but his favorite 4-H experience was teaching his cattle and beef production class to first-year 4-H members.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “The biggest influences on my life have been all the successes and challenges I have experienced working with my cattle.”

BEEF Scholarship Donor: Kunc Family Farms

Throughout his seven-year 4-H career, Jared Stone participated in 92 community service activities, reached more than 5,000 people through 47 workshops and classes, and held various leadership positions. His favorite community service project was loaning one of his heifers to the beef exhibit in Agtropolis at the Oklahoma State Fair and seeing all the smiles the heifer put on people’s faces.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “The aspect of 4-H that has impacted me the most is the skills I have developed from being involved in this program. Everything from public speaking to cooking, all these skills will assist me later on in life.”

BREADS Scholarship Donor: Shawnee Milling Company

A seven-year 4-H member in Noble County, Karman Newman is not only active in the breads project, but also in the leadership and civic engagement opportunities. She has reached approximately 3,467 youth and adults through workshops and service projects. Her favorite activity was teaching an Ag Day workshop for 4-H members in her county.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “One aspect of 4-H that has had a big influence in my life is public speaking. Public speaking has taught me to stand in front of a crowd and talk. I have also learned how to think quickly under pressure from the extemporaneous speeches.”

CHILD CARE Scholarship Donor: Kathy Rutledge Memorial

During her six-year 4-H career, Khloe Haile has participated in 76 community service projects and conducted 55 workshops and classes reaching more than 11,200 youth and adults. She is most proud of her service project In Jesus’ Name We Play. Through this project, Khloe collects gently-used sporting equipment and donates the equipment to children in need.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “The aspect of 4-H that has had the biggest influence on my life is citizenship because it gives me the opportunity to reach people in the community who need help.”

CHOCTAW NATION Scholarship Donor: Choctaw Nation

Beth Armstrong has participated in 538 community service projects with more than 3,800 logged volunteer hours. Beth spearheaded an initiative to start the first public library in Tuttle, Oklahoma, where she currently serves as a co-director for youth programing. In addition to serving her community, Beth enjoys baking bread, designing and creating clothes, and teaching others.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “The skills I have gained through learning by doing and teaching others. I have become a confident public speaker, and I am able to plan events and classes.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “The ability to effectively communicate is needed in today’s world, and 4-H has definitely made me a better communicator. BRIANNA DEEDS

CITIZENSHIP Scholarship Donor: Gene and Judy McKown Endowment

Throughout her nine-year 4-H career, Brianna Deeds has transformed into the passionate leader and caring individual she is today. As a 4-H member, Brianna emphasized her project work on bettering her community and serving others. One of her favorite community service projects is the Great American Cleanup, through which she organized efforts to beautify her hometown of Garber, Okla.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “Leadership—because it has taught me to have confidence in myself. Throughout my 4-H career, the speech contests, teaching workshops and speaking at events has flourished me into the leader I am today.”

One of her favorite projects is ringing the bells during each holiday season for the Salvation Army.

Jacob Sestak has participated in countless community service projects reaching more than 160,000 people, conducted 174 workshops and reached approximately 2,000,000 people through his 4-H leadership. His favorite 4-H memory is raising money for Change for Change, a statewide community service project benefiting the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Oklahoma City.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “Being able to reach out to the people of Oklahoma and the United States has allowed me to not only affect the lives of others, but has also allowed me to share values and hopes to change communities for the better.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “They will continue to make me wish to help my community and others in any way possible, as well as provide advancement in my future occupation.”

MAYSEN GARRETT

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

VETERINARY SCIENCE Scholarship Donor: Chapman Farms

During her six-year 4-H career, Maysen Garrett has taught and attended 35 workshops that reached more than 1,900 youth and adults. Additionally, she has participated in 40 community service projects. Maysen believes in the importance of being a strong leader, and she has served as her club’s president for four years. Her favorite 4-H activities are those that include leadership and veterinary science.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “The hard work you have to put in to achieve success has had a big influence because although you may feel that you are working without recognition, in the end hard work always pays off.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “Being in 4-H, I have developed many important skills, but a few stick out to me. Time management, responsibility and communication skills will help me tremendously throughout my future.”

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

WILDLIFE & FISHERIES Scholarship Donor: Rule of Law Scholarship Fund

A six-year 4-H member, Sage Payne has completed 714 hours working on wildlife projects reaching 23,690 people. She looks for ways to teach others about wildlife and nature. Most recently, Sage led a marine biology day camp to members in her county. Sage said she enjoys being outdoors and doing her part in preserving the wildlife and land we have today so that others can enjoy it for years to come.

WHAT ASPECT OF 4-H HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? “The importance of leadership and community service has had the biggest influence on my life. 4-H encourages me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. I have learned to lead workshops and present presentations through my 4-H project.”

HOW WILL THE LIFE SKILLS YOU LEARNED AS A 4-H MEMBER BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE? “Through 4-H I have learned to be confident and lead others to learn something new. I think no matter how old we get if we can keep leading and helping other people we can continue to make the best better in our lives and in others.”
