OISTAT EXPANDING AND FORMING NEW ALLIANCES 2014 OISTAT events and meetings developed and connected with your support and participation in China, Belgium, Brazil and Taiwan. A big thank-you goes to our hosts in these countries for their generosity, vital to the success of these events. As a global network of theatre professionals, we have been extending our network and endorsement when and where theatre needs us. Our petition for the heritage theatre machinery preservation at Bourla Theatre in Antwerp, Belgium, was met with more than 100 professionals’ support on site in June. Together we delivered informational and inspirational publications for the theatre world such as World Scenography 1990-2005, Digital Theatre Words mobile applications, and the book Understanding OISTAT: Network of Global Theatre Professionals. In 2015 outlook, the first OISTAT Day will be held on June 20th during Prague Quadrennial to celebrate OISTAT’s network and friendship. The Theatre Architecture Competition in its ninth edition will be at Stage|Set|Scenery for the first time in Berlin, Germany from June 9 to 11. Competition theme “Floating Theatre” is expected to bring innovative designs to the Spree River. OISTAT achievements are the collective efforts of all members and leadership of commissions and committee. We welcome new leaders – Chair and Vice Chairs of Technology commission, Romana Bošković (Serbia), Andreas Bickel (Germany) and Loren Schreiber (USA); Chair of Publication & Communication commission, Carl
Walling (USA); and Heads of Lighting Design Group, Kimmo Karjunen (Finland) and Nick Moran (UK). Our deepest gratitude to Ivo Kersmaekers, former Chair of Technology commission; Austin Wang, former Chair of Publication & Communication commission; and Henk van der Geest, former Head of Lighting Design Group for their dedication to OISTAT. They are true assets to the global theatre community and will remain active members of OISTAT. OISTAT global members are the most important resource of the organization. With great pleasure, we have reached out to different theatre communities, expanding our network further to South Africa. Two Candidates Centres, one in Spain and the other in Portugal, have joined OISTAT community in 2014. The numbers of Associate and Individual members have also grown. 2015 is a big year of events and new experiments for OISTAT. We look to establish new platforms for cross-commission exchanges and designers of all generations. We are also keen to expand and form tighter alliances with partner organizations such as ITI (International Theatre Institute), ASSITEJ (International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People), UNIMA (International Puppetry Association), IATC (International Association of Theatre Critics), IFTR (The International Federation for Theatre Research) and many others. I look forward to seeing and reconnecting with you again very soon in Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, Hong Kong, Serbia and South Africa.

WORLD SCENOGRAPHY , 2nd volume of World Scenography World Scenography 1990-2005 series, launched in October, 2014 at Publication & Communication commission annual meeting in Taipei, Taiwan
World Scenography is a book series documenting significant theatre designs from 1975 onwards. World Scenography 1975-1990, the first volume of the series, was published in 2012, and went on to win the 2014 USITT Golden Pen Award for editors Eric Fielding and Peter McKinnon. World Scenography is an ongoing project involving more than 100 regional editors worldwide and has featured more than 400 theatre designs in each volume. Both volumes are now available. THEATRE ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION 2014-2015 Design a Floating Theatre on Spree River in Berlin for TAC 2015
Hosted by OISTAT Architecture commission every four years, Theatre Architecture Competition (TAC) encourages students and emerging architects to reimagine and challenge the boundaries of design for theatre architecture.
TAC 2015 Themed Floating Theatre, the 9th Theatre Architecture Competition launched in October 2014. Participants are asked to design a theatre to float and be moored on the Spree River in Berlin. The TAC 2015 Award Ceremony and exhibition will be held on June 9 to 11 during Stage/Set/Scenery in Berlin, Germany. More information available on www.oistat.org. .8

Digital Theatre Words New additions to word bank on desktop Digital Theatre Words Mobile applications for both iOS and Android updated
The latest Digital Theatre Words (DTW) desktop version was updated in December 2014. It provides translations with 3D rendered graphics and encyclopedia entries as well as synonyms. Digital Theatre Words is a professional theatre dictionary for theatre makers around the world. It collects more than 2000 terms in 24 languages. The project was made possible by Project Leader Jer么me Maeckelbergh and Michael Ramsaur with more than 200 contributors from 26 countries. DTW is an ongoing project. If you would like to volunteer as DTW language editor, please contact us at headquarters@oistat.org.
Digital Theatre Words Mobile Applications OISTAT launched DTW smartphone applications in 2014. With more than 2000 terms categorized in 10 fields of 24 languages, users can search for translations interchangeably and save useful words. The application is a handy tool for international touring and collaborations. Trial version is free for download at www.oistat.org. .9

The book draws on its own organizational developments with global changes, and provides insights into management of non-governmental organizations. TECHNICAL INVENTION PRIZE
Technical Invention Prize (TIP) is a competition encouraging innovative inventions for common practice in theatre. The second edition of TIP will take place at World Stage Design 2017 in Taipei, Taiwan. TIP is a global project initiated by OISTAT Technology commission. More details will be announced in 2015.

Ongoing Projects 2015-2017
WORLD STAGE DESIGN World Stage Design (WSD) is a quadrennial exhibition of designs for live performances and theatres from all around the world. Individual designers are encouraged to submit works directly to the curatorial team. Since its inception in Toronto, Canada (2005), World Stage Design has travelled to Seoul, South Korea (2009), and to Cardiff, United Kingdom (2013). World Stage Design 2017, fourth of its editions, will be hosted in Taipei, Taiwan by Taiwan Association of Theatre Technology (TATT) and Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA).
OISTAT SCENOFEST OISTAT Scenofest is a festival celebrating the making of live theatre, featuring various workshops, presentations, tours, and performances. It is an international platform for theatre professionals and emerging theatre practitioners to network, share knowledge and exchange ideas. The next OISTAT Scenofest will be held in Taipei in 2017 with World Stage Design. The worldwide call for World Stage Design 2021 bid is expected in early 2016.

Ongoing Projects 2015-2017
INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS PROJECT International Standards Project (ISP) is led by Laura van Haperen (Netherlands) and Andreas Bickel (Germany) of OISTAT Technology commission. ISP is a long-term project aiming to create comprehensive standards like CEN and ISO. The survey to understanding regional standards will be available in early 2015. First results to be expected by the end of 2015. ISP surveys will be conducted every two to three years.
CORE STRATEGY INITIATIVE Core Strategy Initiative aims to bring together students across continents to simulate international working patterns of NGOs such as OISTAT, and jointly develop a core strategy for OISTAT in 2015-2025. Students will form a collective international working group to study OISTAT and meet with OISTAT global members for feedback and insights. Project output will signify the collaboration of OISTAT members and young generations.

EDUCATION, RESEARCH and PERFORMANCE DESIGN COMMISSIONS with Costume Design Group, Lighting Design Group and Sound Design Group August 10-14 | Sao Paulo | Brazil E-Scapes: The Exploration of Escaping Traditional Boundaries of Performance and Its Design OISTAT Education, Research and Performance Design commissions jointly participated in the E-Scapes conference in Sao Paulo, August 2014. Brazilian hosts Aby Cohen and Rosane Muniz worked closely with OISTAT Chairs in developing the program to explore and redefine boundaries of performance and its design. The five-day conference of performances, cultural facilities visits, talks and workshops brought together practitioners, educators and researchers from 31 countries.

EDUCATION COMMISSION The Commission brought together theatre educators from Brazil, UK, Sweden, China and the USA to discuss education and training systems in Training Theatre Technicians Roundtable. Success with SCENTEC program provided model for cross-country and cross-institutional training exchanges. Discussions on cultural policies with international colleagues was well-received. The commission proposed to embed the topic in all future meetings.

RESEARCH COMMISSION Papers presented at the conference had shown wide scope in performance and space, and classical concert designs. Open dialogue with multimodal research included presenters from Europe, South America, Asia and the Oceania offering diverse perspectives.
PERFORMANCE DESIGN COMMISSION Presentations from the Performance Design were rich in new ideas of spatial and costume design. Commission members proposed forming a new working group, Space Design Group, to focus on practices of design beyond traditional performance spaces. Reija Hirovski will serve as Interim Head until further discussions during Prague Quadrennial 2015.

SOUND DESIGN GROUP OISTAT Sound Design Group members and local sound artists exchanged ideas on the sound design virtual mentoring program and the means to facilitate the development of sound design for different countries.
NEW HEADS OF LIGHTING DESIGN GROUP Lighting Design Group elected new Heads, Kimmo Karjunen (Finland) and Nick Moran (UK). We thank former Head Henk van der Geest for 14 years of leadership. The group outlined the planning for 2015, including activities at Kimmo Karjunen Prague Quadrennial and the international lighting symposium in Hong Kong.

TECHNOLOGY April 9-13 | Shanghai | China Theater Technology Education and Curriculum Symposium NEW LEADERSHIP Technology commission elected new Chair Romana Boťković (Serbia) with Andreas Bickel (Germany) and Loren Schreiber (USA) as Vice Chairs. Plannings for International Standards Project and Technical Invention Prize 2017 were outlined.
The symposium featured professional speakers from Belgium, Canada, China, Serbia, and the USA to share their thoughts and advice on education for theatre technicians. Topics range from Development and Implementation of Courses for Theatre Technicians and Stage Mangers to Explore the Open Up Education for Graduate Student.

ARCHITECTURE and TECHNOLOGY with Theatre Timeline Group
June 13-15 | Antwerp | Belgium Wood and Canvas (and rabbit glue) in the Modern World
OISTAT Architecture and Technology commissions with Theatre Timeline Group together held conference and meetings at the iconic Bourla Theatre in June 2014 to stress the importance of preserving wooden theatre machinery from 18th and 19th century. The conference drew more than 100 participants discussing solutions to save the endangered wooden theatre machinery. The conference moved forward with a petition signed by theatre scholars and practitioners across 17 countries in 4 continents to propose the preservation of the ancient stage machinery in Bourla Theatre and others that face similar situation of abolition.

NEW CHAIR & NEW PROJECTS OISTAT Publication & Communication elected Carl Walling (USA) as the new Chair of the commission. Project leaders presented updates on World Scenography, Digital Theatre Words, OISTAT websites & social media and the newly proposed Young Designers Platform project. Special thanks to former Chair Austin Wang for his endeavors in leading the commission.
Cultural Landmark & Its Communities Symposium saw more than 100 participants tapping into topics on large cultural facilities and its operations, exploring arts advocacy and developing creative communities.

COSTUME DESIGN GROUP April 2-6 | Antwerp & Brussels, Belgium, and Breda, the Netherlands Costume Design Group met in Antwerp to discuss the group’s Logo Contest and the upcoming activities. The Costume Design Group paid visits to the Brussels Museum, the Costume Atelier of the Brussels’ Opera House La Monnaie, Atelier of Isabelle de Borchgrave, Academie La Cambre, Breda Museum and ModeMuseum Antwerp. Future group activities include meeting at Prague Quadrennial 2015, the Costume at the Turn of the Century exhibition in Moscow, Russia and the participation of Philippines World Costume Festival in 2016.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE & GOVERNING BOARD March 27-28 | Fort Worth, Texas | USA Executive Committee & Governing Board Invited by United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) to its 2014 annual conference and Stage Expo, OISTAT Executive Committee and Governing Board discussed organization’s ongoing international projects and activities, and partnerships with OISTAT Centres. World Stage Design (WSD) 2013 Project Leader Sean Crowley and Technical Director Ian Evans shared their experiences on planning international events. WSD2013 Gold Award winner Sophie Jump spoke about the winning work, Like a Fish Out of Water. World Scenography editors Eric Fielding and Peter McKinnon received the Golden Pen Award for World Scenography 1975-1990. *Second volume World Scenography 1990-2005 will also be available on site at Stage Expo 2015 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
August 14-18 | Sao Paulo & Brumadinho | Brazil Executive Committee Executive Committee was invited to Instituto Inhotim, one of the most important art institutes in Brazil. It is the combination of open-air modern art museum and botanic garden, which also serves the community as an educational institution. The Executive Committee reviewed 2015-2017 plans and development of the organization.
