Celebrating 50 years influence in theatre de architecture and stage te

s of cultural esign, theatre echnology Since 1968, OISTAT has been connecting theatre-makers across boarders. What we have achieved together will be the solid foundation for the next 50 years.

Year-End Report from President Dear OISTAT friends, with the end of the year nearing, it’s time for an update. And some contemplation. Please take the time to bear with me for a while and read my report on what has been happening from my point of view over the last year, the plans that have been tentatively laid out, and let me share my thoughts on our organization. A lot has been happening!

Symposium, a prelude to PQ’19. We took the time to have a constructive meeting with Markéta Fantová, Brad Caleb Lee and Michaela Buriánková, and talked about the relation between OISTAT and PQ and how to set it on course. We laid the basis for OISTAT’s presence during PQ’19, at studio ALTA across the square from Výstavîstê. Satisfying developments.

Every year seems to be a busy OISTAT year nowadays. We used to have our 4-year congress, alternating every two years with PQ & Scenofest, but now we have annual big business: WSD 2017 (now together even with TAC, TIP and Scenofest), our 50th anniversary last year and PQ coming up this year. And of course, our regular annual EC and EC/ GB meetings. It aligns with the dynamics we live in nowadays.

In March I went to USITT in Fort Lauderdale, and had a meeting with Kevin Rigdon (both OISTAT and USITT), executive director David Grindle and the USITT Board, represented by Mark Shanda and President Daniel Culhane. We had a pleasant, informative and open discussion on the relation between USITT and OISTAT. We emphasized that mutual openness has to be the fundament in our relation. I got the chance to see the HQ in action, representing OISTAT at USITT (good job), and took the opportunity to meet with the Chinese representatives from CISD invited by USITT, as well as see the exhibition of the digest of Costume at the Turn of the Century and meet with Igor Roussanoff. Well spent time.

Let’s start the flashback in Budapest, where we set off with our EC/GB meeting in October 2017. A memorable meeting, to my opinion by the book: a good balance between business, mutuality (by the presentations program at the Academy) and profundity to enjoy the culture & hospitality and understand the rich cultural climate. Sad to see the country has since shifted to a negative role model where the arts are under great pressure. Right after Budapest Wan Jung and I set off to Prague to join the Porous Border

In April the EC convened in Egypt in Sharm-el-Sheikh, by invitation of our Vice President Hazem Shebl. We were well taken care of in the sunny south of the Sinaï at the Red Sea. We had a luxurious time slot, and therefore we were able to take our time in the discussions.

Mid-April I headed for Madrid with a two-faced task: to join the Costume subcommission at their annual meeting hosted by The Royal School of Dramatic Art (RESAD) in Madrid, as well as to meet up with our Spanish front man José Luis Ferrera, to talk about the new initiative ‘The Theatres of Latin America’ (TTLA). The Costume sub-commission meeting was inspiring, presentations lavishly in their quality and variety. José Luis introduced me to RESAD’s Director Pablo Iglesias Simón and José Luis Raymond, president of the AAPEE (the Asociación de Artistas Plásticos Escénicos de España). We had a discussion on how to possibly cooperate with the TTLA project – a well-organized scientifically based research project on theatres in Spanish speaking Latin America. It could be particularly interesting with regards to support for OISTAT centres in for instance Brazil, Mexico and Chile.

Right after that I made an up and down trip to London, to meet up with EC member Sean Crowley who was there with his Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama students for a presentation of their graduation work at OXO Tower Wharf. We talked about the preparations for the OISTAT’s upcoming 50th Birthday Party in Cardiff. By the way: the student’s exhibition was excellent. In August I decided to pop up as a surprise guest at our own OISTAT 50th Anniversary Party in Taipei. As many people from Taiwan and surrounding areas were not able to travel to Cardiff fo r a p a r t y ( a l b e i t O I S TAT ’s 5 0 t h Anniversary), and this turned out to be the case as well for representatives from Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, HQ therefore proposed to have a (smaller) Asian 50-year party at HQ. Good plan, that turned out very well, with good attendance from the cultural field and representatives from TATT and MOC – a lot of positive attention. And a nice party as well.

03 04

And then, end of August: the big 2018 OISTAT event: our 50 th Anniversary Party in Cardiff at RWCMD. The attendance turned out to be great – a fine variety of people, and the EC/GB were there almost in full force. The PCC had official meeting and election, and Hubert Eckart was elected Chair. The celebration of our 50th Anniversary was a great and memorable event. Just look at the OISTAT Flickr account to find visual proof of a really nice meeting with old and new OISTAT friends. That’s where we pick up the trail leading to the future. Next stop: Calgary, end of September 2018. The EC/GB meeting and 1st preparation for WSD 2021. On the agenda were of course the formal EC/GB meetings and open discussions on the path that has to be mapped out

OISTAT in 2018

In June I went to Dresden, on invitation of the DTHG, to join in the celebration of their 100 th Anniversary. I met with Wesko Rohde, chairman of the board of DTHG. A trade fair was organized, with talks and presentations and I attended the festive 100th anniversary evening program at which I had the honour to present OISTAT’s best wishes in a short speech and join the celebration party afterwards

and meet with German OISTAT friends.

Year-End Report from President

Business in general was being organized, the nearing end of the MOC contract was on the agenda, as was – of course the budget and our membership. Lines were set out for future 2018 activities. In the Egypt program we had several open talks with representatives of the Egyptian cultural field – of which multiple stories popped up in the press and social media. Kevin joined the jury for the International Theatre Festival for Youth. A highlight was the EC’s private meeting with Egypt’s Minister of Culture, Dr. Ina Abdel-Dayem.

for OISTAT’s future in general, and particularly regarding membership. Of course our other goal in Calgary was to get to know the location for WSD 2021. We received a very warm welcome and got acquainted with Calgary, the University, team members, facilities and possibilities. And all look very promising. From Calgary EC member Marina Raychinova and I went on to Chicago, where we met with EC member Kevin Rigdon again to join the Architecture commission for their annual meeting and on their tour. A very dynamic and intense couple of days, where we were immersed in the spectacular architecture of Chicago, in the company of a large group of OISTAT members as well as members of the American Society of Theatre Consultants. This led to interesting conversations and gave meetings an interesting twist; a good initiative to join the representatives of both organizations and nice placemaking for OISTAT at the same time. We visited about nine theatres, amongst which the Famous Steppenwolf Theatre. Beginning of November Marina, Kevin and I met again, this time in Beijing on invitation of the Central Academy of Drama, where the Beijing International Biennale (for mer ISDSWE, the International Stage Design Students’ Work Exchange) was held. The Stage Design Teaching Department under the auspices of professor Sun Daqing and OISTAT’s Education commission had organized a well-attended and interesting program for international students to jointly work on the creation of a performance starting from design rather than direction or scenario. About 15 stage design education programs from univer sities across the world were represented by both students and their teachers; truly cross cultural and interdisciplinary. Businesswise, Education Chair William Kenyon, Marina, Kevin and I had an infor mative and open

meeting with the newly appointed president professor Hao Rong. This year’s BIB was combined with the ISTAN competition and exhibition. ISTAN, International Stage Art Network is a joint CAD – ITI Costume Design Event, for which both Marina as well as Simona Rybáková were among the jurors. The combination of both events was a wellchosen one. From Beijing I travelled on to Taiwan, Kaohsiung, for a visit to see National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) in nor mal operation after its grand opening some weeks before. I went on to Taipei to meet up with EC Vice President Duncan Chang for consultation of OISTAT matters. And of course, once again I met with Headquarters, to take care of regular business with Wan Jung and her team. As Headquarters was at that time taking care of organizing the We Island Dance Festival in Hsinchu, not too far from Taipei, I took the opportunity to join in there too. Finally, the Technology commission met in the beginning of December in Vienna, and as this is the commission where I started in when I came to be with OISTAT, I hooked up to join old and new friends to join the meetings, once again also attended by EC member Marina, and monitored the elections; the outcome being Gabriele Högg elected new Chair and attended the interesting TC-program hosted very hospitable and generous by the ÖTHG and their Austrian partners. The above is an overview of my OISTAT doings and whereabouts. They are not so much my personal adventures, but moreover it’s me joining the adventures of others, of OISTAT friends, all working and contributing for the better of OISTAT - and of course for the fun of it. After all: enjoying what OISTAT brings us on all kinds of levels is what makes it all worthwhile.
