Certificate III in Guiding Career Training Institute of Australia (CTIA) is offering Certificate III in Guiding (SIT30513) funded through the Certificate 3 Guarantee Program for Fraser Island Guides. Whether you have just entered the industry, would like to upgrade your current qualifications to a Certificate III level or have been working as a Guide for many years and wish to formalise your skills with a qualification this program is for you. COURSE COST Concessional students (see over for eli gibility) - $39 Non-concessional students - $78 That’s right - Government subsidies are available for eligible participants under the Certificate 3 Guarantee. SUBSIDY ELIGIBILITY IN A NUTSHELL Full eligibi lity guidelines are listed on the FAQs over page but in a nutshell you would need to be :  An Australian or New Zealand Citizen or Australian permanent resident  A Queensland Resident  Aged 15 years or over  Not holding, or currently, studying a Certificate III (or equivalent) qualification or higher  Working full-time, part-time, casual or be unemployed TRAINING & ASSESSMENT DELIVERY For Guides who are already in industry the process becomes simplified with the use of recognition of prior learning (RPL) and credit transfers (for any units already held) . Students will be assessed for current skills and knowledge levels and provided with tools to assist them to provide evidence of these . Any ‘gaps ’ in skills and knowledge will be addressed through a mixture of training delivery methods including , but not limited to face-to-face and o n-line delivery . Frequently Asked Questions… W H AT AR E T H E B E N EF IT S OF UN D ER T A KI NG T HI S Q U A LI FI C AT IO N ? The Certificate III in Guiding qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a range of well-developed guiding skills. Work would be undertaken in the field where tourism products are delivered. The field includes any destination, local or regional area, tourist precinct, site or attraction. The qualification reflects the role of skilled operators who apply a broad range of competencies in a varied work context, using some discretion and judgement and relevant theoretical knowledge. They may provide technical advice and support to a team. Participants who successfully complete could progress to a wide range of other qualifications in the service industries including a Certificate IV in Guiding and finally a Diploma of Travel & Tourism.

W HO I S E LI GIB L E TO P A RT I CI P A T E? The program is open to any Qld resident (who is also an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants, or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and on the pathway to permanent residency), who does not already hold, or is not already enrolled in, a post-school Certificate III or higher level qualification from 1 July 2013 (this includes any equivalent Certificate III or higher level qualification). NOTE: Certificate III qualifications completed at secondary school are not counted & participants under the Single and Teenage Parent Program (STPP), are exempt from the eligibility criteria relating to previous qualification attained); prospective participants must also be: - aged 15 years of age or above & no longer at school. Employment status does not matter - a participant can be unemployed and seeking work, or working on a full-time, part-time or casual basis.

W H AT AR E P AR T IC IP AN TS A W AR D E D A T C OM PL E TI ON ? Upon successful completion of all units of competencies in the course, participants will be issued with a Certificate III in Guiding. Should a participant not complete the entire course then a Statement of Attainment will be given for the units successfully completed.

W HO A R E C ON C ES S IO NA L P A RT IC IP AN T S Where the participant or participant’s family or guardian is responsible for the payment of any student contribution fee a concessional participant is defined as: a) b) c)

a person who holds or is listed on a Health Care concession card or Pensioner concession card issued under Commonwealth law; or a person not currently working; or a person who is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

H OW WI LL P AR TI CI P AN T S B E A SS E S S E D ? Assessment is competency based, in that the participant will be required to demonstrate competency in a range of tasks. Assessment procedures are transparent and address the key assessment principles of being valid, reliable, flexible and fair. Assessment strategies include a range of techniques, which include, but are not limited to the use of; direct observation, questions & answers, practical exercises, and case studies. Participants who can demonstrate that they are already competent in the knowledge and skills of a unit of competency, or have previously completed a course, may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer.

H OW I S T H E C O UR S E D E LI V ER E D AN D H O W L ON G W I LL I T T A K E ? Participants study via a combination of face-to-face tutorials and on-line theory and assessment delivery. There will be some reduction in training dependent on any RPL/Credit Transfers that may apply. Each student will have different levels of skills and knowledge and therefore it is difficult to determine how long the process will take. Having said that once the skills assessment has been undertaken your trainer will be able to give you a better idea of how long this process will take.
