The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other person die for his. General George Patton

Jokes Dear God, All I ask for in 2011 is a big, fat bank account and a slim body. Please don’t mix these up like you did last year. Amen.

His dad thought about it for a moment, then replied, "I really don't know, son." The boy sat quietly from another moment, then turned back to his dad and asked, "How does our boat float on the water?" Once again his dad replied, "Don’t Mr. Peterson, a tourist from Toronto know, son." Pondering his thoughts again, a short arrived in Florida. In an airport taxi cab, Peterson asked while later, the boy asks "Why is the sky blue?" the driver... "Say, is this really a Again, his dad replied. "Don’t know, healthful place?" "It sure is," the cabby replied. "When son." I came here I couldn't say one word. The inquisitive boy, worried he was annoying his father, asks this time I had hardly any hair on my head. I "Dad, do you mind that I'm asking didn't have the strength to walk you all of these questions?" across a room, and I had to be lifted "Of course not son." replied his dad, out of bed." "That's wonderful!" said the tourist , "How else are you ever going to learn anything?" "How long have you been here?" "I was born here."

A young boy and his dad went out fishing one fine morning. After a few quiet hours out in the boat, the boy became curious about the world around him. He looked up at his dad and asked "How do fish breath under water?"

A couple was having a discussion about what to see and do now that they were safely in Florida on their honeymoon. Trying to assert himself right off the bat, he exploded, "If it weren't for my money, we wouldn't be here at all!" The wife replied, "My dear, if it weren't for your mon-

ey, not only would we not be in Florida, we wouldn't be on a honeymoon, nor would there be any "we" in the first place."

What do you get if you cross a sorceress with a millionaire? A very witch person.

A brunette is walking through the country, when she finds a bottle. She rubs it, and you guessed it, a genie appears. The genie says, "You are allowed three wishes. But, I must warn you, anything you get, all the blondes in the world get twice as much." The woman says, "Okay. Give me a nice house." The genie replies, "You now have one nice house and all the blondes in the world have two." Then the lady says, "Give me a gorgeous man." The genie replies, "You now have one gorgeous man, while all the blondes have two." The lady says, "For my last wish, Genie, see that stick over there? Beat me half to death with it."

A salesman is driving toward home when he sees a man hitchhiking. Because the trip had been long and quiet, he stops the car and the man climbs in. During their small talk, the man glances surreptitiously at a brown bag on the front seat between them. "If you're wondering what's in the bag," offers the salesman, "it's a bottle of wine. I got it for my wife." The man is silent for awhile, nods several times and says, "Good trade."

Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do "practice?"

A big mouth college student challenged a senior citizen saying it was impossible for their generation to understand his world. "You grew up in a different world," the student said. "Today we have television, jet planes, space travel, nuclear energy, computers, the internet..." Taking advantage of a pause in the student's litany, the senior said, "You're right sonny . We didn't have those things when we were young... so we invented them!"

Winter Birds - The Blue Tit The most common resident tit over most of Europe, the Blue Tit is a woodland bird that has adapted well to living close to man. The wings are pale blue with a single white wingbar. The back is a greenish colour. The under parts are yellow with a neat dividing line on the centre of the breast. They have a blue crown and white cheeks with a black eye-stripe. The bill is short, the wings are round and short and the tail is also short. It is the only Tit with blue colouration. They have yellow breast feathers which they keep yellow by eating certain caterpillars and the more they eat, the brighter the yellow. Females tend to choose mates with the brightest yellow breast feathers. The male is almost identical to the female except that he is slight brighter in colour. A chick will leave the nest at three weeks old and left to fend totally by itself after five weeks.

Blue Tits nest in holes on trees or in walls but will gladly use man made box nests. They have been know to nest in post-boxes, traffic lights, wall mounted ash trays outside pubs and in France, they found that tits nesting in places with strong odours, bring in lavender and mint leaves to create an aromatic environment for their young. Birds are lactose intolerant but the Blue Tit found that in the days of milk delivery, the bottles of full milk had lactose free cream on the top and they used to pierce the top of the milk bottle to drink the cream. This knowledge was passed on to their young as learnt behaviour which is not surprising as they are considered to be very intelligent and have solved complex obstacles and puzzles in order to get to peanuts in feeders.

Do You Have a BER Certificate? All dwellings for sale or rent are now required by law to have a BER (Building Energy Rating) certificate. Listed buildings are exempt from this law. The certificate is valid for ten years unless there is a significant change in the house such as an extension, in which case a new certificate is required. A BER is a measure to see how much energy and carbon your home will use or produce in a year. As is seen on electrical appliances, your home will be listed in the form of perfor-

mance bands from A - the most efficient, to G - the least efficient. The certificate is simply to help home buyers or renters to know the energy efficiency of your home before they buy/rent. A house with an A rating will have the lowest energy bills and therefore have better sale value. By obtaining a BER certificate, a householder can decide to improve the energy performance of their home and thus reduce their own running costs and increase the value of their property.

Ballycumber Drama Group present “Run for your Wife” Ballycumber Amateur Drama Group took to the stage last weekend with their production on ‘Run for your Wife’ by Ray Cooney and directed by Brendan Hanamy. “Run for your Wife” is set in London in the 1970’s The hilarious farce proved a big hit with the packed audience on both nights with laughter from start to finish as the story of John Smith unfolds with engaging performances, splitsecond timing, and a lot of laughs. It is to Brendan Hanamy’s credit as a director that he manages to accelerate the mayhem and deliver an amazing night of comedy.

Smith becomes hopelessly entangled in his attempts with his neighbours upstairs, ‘Stanley’ played by Derek Claffey and the hilarious Brendan Robbins as ‘Bobby’, to explain himself to his wives and two suspicious police officers Carol Robbins and Michael Hiney.

Smiths neighbours, the well-meaning sidekick Stanley adds much to the mirth the way he keeps putting his foot-in-it, to great effect and and Brendan Robbins as Bobby Franklyn, who struts and flits his time upon the stage, were great hits with the audience in Ballycumber. The action throughout moves briskly, with the ‘Run for your Wife’ is the story of actors play simultaneous scenes in London cab driver John Smith played the same stage space, which kept the by Chris Murphy, with two wives, audience guessing throughout! Aideen Coughlan (Barbara) and Frances Doyle (Mary), two lives and ‘Run for your Wife’ is one of the a very precise schedule for juggling funniest productions yet from Ballythem both! Motoring The new Škoda Fabia RS Already a popular sight on Irish roads the Octavia RS now has a smaller sibling. The all new Fabia RS first presented at the Geneva Motorshow is now available to test drive at Škoda retailers nationwide. Powered by a 180bhp 1.4 TSI direct injection petrol engine the Fabia RS is the fastest production Škoda ever produced completing a 0-100km/h dash in 7.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 225 km/h. Performance is achieved thanks to dual-charging via a Turbo Charger and a mechanically driven Super Charger. The transmission is equally as advanced using a seven-speed DSG twin-clutch gearbox that allows extremely efficient gear shifting in automatic mode or via paddle shifts located on the steering wheel. Efficiency has not been sacrificed at the expense of performance; the Fabia returns 6.4 l/100km on the combined cycle and emitting 148g/km of CO2 has annual road tax of €302. Sports seats and a 3 spoke multi-function steering wheel are unique to the

Fabia RS while the exterior has a low stange forging strong visual links with the RIC winning Fabia S2000 rally car. Front and rear spoilers, twin exhausts, integrated LED lights and 17inch ‘Gigaro’ alloy wheels differentiate the Fabia RS further from other models in the Fabia range. Raymond Leddy, marketing manager at Škoda Ireland said: “We’re very excited about the Fabia RS, it’s a very unique car offering exceptional driving dynamics and value that our customers have come to expect from Škoda”.

Priced at €22,690 Škoda Ireland expect to retail thirty Fabia RS vehicles in 2011. As an alternative to the Fabia RS, Škoda have also launched a Fabia Sport Line which retains many of the sporty attributes of the RS but with a broader range of engines including a 1.2 70bhp petrol from €15,270. Pothole damage reaches near epidemic proportions, say AA It’s been a very poor financial start to the year for Irish motorists who are contending with escalating fuel prices and pothole damage. An AA Motor Insurance poll of more than 21,000 motorists reveals that in the region of 1 in 6 motorists have been forced to foot the bill for repair jobs

and or call upon the AA as a result of pothole damage. “This is a disproportionately high number of pothole related incidents in comparison to other months, says John Farrell Director of AA Motor Insurance. “However it’s hardly surprising given the visible degradation of our road surfaces.”

Portlaoise 4th’s joined the Leinster J4 League Section C - Division 1 recently replacing Millmount and fulfilling the fixtures scheduled for

the rest of the league. Their first game was on Saturday at Togher against a Parkmore team. From the start it was a tough encounter with both sets of forwards attempting to gain advantage. The match flowed from side to side with both teams defences standing firm from the opposition pressure and the score board remained at zero for the first 20 minutes. Then Parkmore broke through the Portlaoise defence took full advantage to cross the line for a try. Parkmore added the conversion. Portlaoise restarted and applied pressure from the off but Parkmore defence stood firm. Then Parkmore capitalised on a defensive error by Portlaoise to score a try under the posts. This they converted. The half time the score was Portlaoise 0 – Parkmore 14. The second half began with a flourish. Portlaoise dominated from the start and were rewarded with a try inside the first 5 minutes of the second half. This was unconverted to have the score at Portlaoise 5 – Parkmore 14. Art Exhibition by Bernadette Kiely At Dunamaise Arts Centre The quayside in Carrick on Suir where Bernadette Kiely grew up informed her deep connection and fascination with 'the river', her life being regulated by the constant presence and flux of the river Suir. From a young age she often witnessed heavy flooding on the quay and the powerful natural force of the river imprinted itself strongly on her mind. Since then Kiely has moved from the banks of the Suir to the quayside of the Nore, a fast moving volatile river, also subject to regular flooding. While she makes work based on the elements of air, fire and earth including growth and decay in nature it is to the element of water in the form of the river she consistently returns, making drawings, paintings, photographs and more recently video.

'QUAY | work from the river' features a series of large paintings and accompanying charcoal, chalk and pencil drawings chronicling the seasonal life of the river Nore. Moving between the objective and the abstract, Kiely uses both methods in her painting. Colour is one of her prime motivators, the expressive application of pigment being intrinsic to her oeuvre, at times pushing her work close to colourfield. Exact visual replicas are not created, rather it is the very essence of what it feels like to stand beside the river, the damp, the floods, the cool air, fog, early morning mist, the rushing movement and the cloud filtered light reflected in the water.

'While big, noisy forces (such as war, economics and the scandals of corruption) compete to grab our attention and

the headlines, Aosdana member Kiely's beautiful paintings remind us that the slow and relentless growth of lichens and the inevitable movements of the tide will outlast them all'. Gemma Tipton, The Irish Times, July 2009

Bernadette Kiely's work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public and private collections in Ireland, UK, Europe and the USA. She has been the recipient of many awards and fellowships and in 1997 made drawings and watercolours for the poet Derek Mahon's limited edition book 'Somewhere

the Wave', published by Gallery Press, Co. Meath. She is represented by Taylor Galleries, Dublin and Catherine Hammond Gallery, West Cork and is a member of Aosdana. Bernadette will conduct a workshop in the Dunamaise Arts Centre on Saturday, February 26th at 11am. Places are strictly limited - contact reception on (057) 8663355 to book your place now. Exhibition opening hours: Monday Saturday 10am - 5.30pm

Counselling men who batter, and steps that all abusers can take to stop abusing Counsellors should be aware that their abusive client distrusts others, and that includes the counsellor, even if the client has voluntarily come for counselling. Counsellors should never allow an abusive client to minimise abuse. Abusers will make every effort to get the counsellor on their side by minimising, denying and blaming the victim. The counsellor must challenge all of these. Many abusers are persuasive, logical, and charming, and portray themselves as individuals who need the understanding of the counsellor, and want the counsellor to take them at face value. This is difficult for the counsellor, who is trying to stand in the shoes of the client; and it is hard to be aware and somewhat suspicious and yet be truly empathic. But, it can be done, because part of counselling is being real in a supportive relationship. Thus forming a good relationship is fundamental, and it allows the counsellor to make strong challenges without frightening the client away. The counsellor must also be aware that batterers often feel that they are victims, and portray themselves in this light. Historically, men who battered were protected by the tradition of privacy and the sanctity of marriage and the family. They would consider being prosecuted as an invasion of their privacy. The more that the counsellor educates them the greater the chance that they will embark on the road to change. Sometimes batterers are addicted to alcohol or drugs and they use this as an excuse for their abuse. Counsellors should be aware that addictions are not the root causes of abuse, and should challenge any excuse put forward by an abusive client. A challenge is a way of getting the client to think, it is a way of helping them to educate themselves. If, however, they are addicts they may return more deeply into drink and drugs if the pain they are experiencing in therapy becomes too unbearable. It is important for alcoholics and drugs addicts to attend an addiction counsellor as well as a general counsellor for the abusive behaviours. I am not an addiction counsellor and I do not counsel addicts until they have been off drink or drugs for about two years, lest the pain they will experience in general counselling drive them back into using substances to dull the pain.

By Jim O’Shea

As a counsellor you can expect the abuser to continue denying his behaviour and blaming his partner. Even if a person voluntarily attends counselling he will continue to minimise his actions, possibly for some months, and will try to control what happens in the counselling sessions. After all, control is the basis of all abuse. Some abusive clients often use anger, which they portray as justifiable anger, accusing their partners of being crazy, and giving many examples of the wrongs they have committed. The counsellor will always have sympathy with his client, and there is a danger that they will allow the exploration to focus on the abuser’s partner. If the abuser manages to shift the blame onto his partner, then the counselling is failing. So keep the focus on the abuser, and educate him on what abuse is and what it does. The abuser may also take to opposite road to anger, and be placating, and suggest couple counselling. In that case the counsellor might assume a judgemental attitude and the victim may find herself having to prove that she has been abused. It’s rather tricky!
