1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK:

I designed this Newborn Cow Hat for my fifth grandson, after visiting and taking pictures at his family's dairy farm. A professional photographer took newborn pictures of him which included some with a holstein looking cow hat. The photographer posted the picture on her website and pinterest. Many people asked about the hat so she gave them my e-mail address. Finally, I created an Etsy shop, Knittingmore. I have added a few different designs an have sold well over 1,000 hats in just three years.

2. IS THERE A STORY BEHIND THE NAME OF YOUR BUSINESS?

The name of my business comes from two different thoughts. The first is there are more thing to do (clean the house, laundry, cook dinner, etc. ) after I knit. The second thought is, I LOVE being created in many different areas (sewing gardening, painting, etc.) So I could say I do more than knitting.

3. HOW DID YOU COME TO BE A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST/ CRAFTER/DESIGNER?

Shop name: KNI T TI NGM OR E W EB SI TE : E TS Y.COM ( KNI T TI NGM OR E )

Instagram: KNI T TI NGM A M A 4

OCE A N S TAT E OCTOBER 2017

I have been a creative person all of my life taking after my mother and also learning to knit when I was 8 years old. I believe in not holding back or to be afraid of putting yourself out in the public with your craft. I have been luck to find just the right product to be successful. I am always thinking up new items but holding on to those ideas until the right moment.

4. WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION?

From everywhere! Nature. Books. People e-mailing me asking if I could make a hat of a _______.

5. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM TO CREATE?

My favorite is the Black Angus Newborn Cow hat. Many people send me pictures of their child or grandchild in each of the different hats but I think love the way the Black Angus hat looks on each baby.

6. WHAT’S YOUR BEST SELLER?

My best seller by far is the Black and White Holstein hat.

7. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN RHODE ISLAND?

I have been in Rhode Island for 34 years. My husband is a native of Westerly.. so here I am!

8. WHAT DO YOU {HEART} ABOUT RHODE ISLAND? The beaches and activities in Wilcox Park.

9. FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWNERS? Watch Hill

10. ANY ADVICE FOR NEW/WANNABE MAKERS?

My advice is to not be afraid of putting your product out there. I was lucking to find just the right item that was unique enough to sell. Also, when you design a unique item, you will have people that copy your product. Think of it as a compliment.

11. PLEASE INCLUDE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD:

Choose a craft that you enjoy doing for a business because you will be expected to complete orders all the time and it takes many hours of your life. Although I work a full time job that I count on to pay the bills, I still enjoy the time after hours with my business. Plus it doesn't hurt to have an item that can be mobile. Many times you will see me around town (coffee shop, beach, etc. ) working on pieces.

THE PLACE EVERYONE'S POSTING FROM THIS MONTH &

Why You Should Too { 10,OOO SUNS }

A QUICK SEARCH of either Providence

or PVD on Instagram this month and within a few seconds of scrolling, the photos from this location start popping up. Selfies. Fake candids (also known as fandids). A few post-brunch pics (A little foto etiquette - Give a girl a filter! Refrain from posting group pics where you look adorable and everyone else looks awkward.). And of course... the sunflowers on their own, with a cityscape backdrop. So, I'm talking about 10,000 Suns, the grassroots garden of sunflowers, situated between South Water and South Main streets in the capital city. Funded by donations from a Kickstarter campaign (Sponsors also include the peeps over at The Shop on Wickenden and Campus Fine Wines.), and planted and maintained by a dedicated group of local volunteers, this is year 2 of this project and once

again, it does not disappoint. We were there again yesterday in the early afternoon, and there were lots of people milling around the makesift park, exploring and (because...why the heck not?) taking tons of smart phone pics. In the same way that no one takes a terrible photo while wearing sunglasses, absolutely everyone looks better posing near sunflowers. In fact, the more, the better the end result. (Give it a try!) You also can't help but feel happier while surrounded by thousands of these cheery things, which no surprise, also comes thru in the pictures. The key photo opp - which we didn't get - does require getting near a pair of quirkily mismatched, wooden RED chairs, half hidden somewhere among the sunnies. (Watch for the super cute photos over on IG of various dogs lounging on said chairs.) Sounds easy

enough, but try going on a bright, sunny weekend afternoon or during lunch hour. Way too many ppl crowded around, but if you go mid-week (either before or after peak lunchtime), you'll have much better luck.

up wanting to become engineers. Carley Ferrara, on the other hand, grew up wanting to use her hands. As the founder and lead craftsperson of Iron Mountain Forge & Furniture in Providence, she does just that– designing and building custom furniture pieces and artwork for clients all over the world. Born in Fort Lauderdale, Carley grew up learning to craft with her father and grandfather. They taught her how to fix things, rather than making a new purchase, or paying someone else to fix something. She worked on small projects before eventually falling in love with the art of woodworking, a passion that would follow her through college, and into her adult life. Throughout high school, Carley participated in summer camps, including an architecture program at the Art Institute of Chicago. Around the time of her junior year, she begged her parents to send her to the Oxbow School in Napa, Calif., for a semester long program in studio artmaking and interdisciplinary humanities. At the time, the program accepted approximately 40 applicants per semester from all across the country. Carley’s final project for the program was a self-portrait exploration, for which she created a sculpture and a short auto-biographical video. Actor Robert Redford was invited to participate as a special guest judge for the final project reviews, and chose Carley’s video to be entered into his teen film festival. Overall, she would finish in third place. When it came time to apply to college, Carley received offers from five different schools, electing to attend the Rhode Island School of Design. She recalls an early project from her freshman year, where her professor instructed the class to create a seat using one 2 X 8’ board. Carley utilized a process called bent lamination, something that a typical design student wouldn’t expect to encounter until their third year. After her freshman year, she would transfer to the Miami University of Ohio, to finish her undergraduate work. Following graduation, Carley moved to Boone, NC to focus on fine woodworking, making cabinets at Old Chestnut Mountain Woodworks. Determined to pay off bills, she would work various other jobs including waitressing, and teaching yoga while still committing to the wood shop, sometimes until the wee hours of the morning. Cabinets, however, were not the kind of project that Carley wanted to work on. She dreamt of more adventurous projects. A friend encouraged her to apply for graduate studies, a mere two days before the application deadline of many schools. Having put together a portfolio submission in just 48 hours, Carley sent off her applications to the Savannah College of Art & Design, and the Rhode Island School of Design. Ultimately, Carley would return to Providence to attend RISD, as a member of the graduate furniture department. It was during this time that she was encouraged to experiment with different materials besides wood, and explored fabrics before ultimately discovering metalworking, on the suggestion of friend. At the time, RISD did not have dedicated blacksmith facilities for the furniture department, and so she participated in a summer internship in New Hampshire with metalworker Vivian Beer. She would spend three to four days a week working in the shop, even sleeping there a few nights per week. Here she gained basic blacksmithing skills. Upon receiving her masters, Carley moved back down to Boone to

MEE T CARLEY the premier female blacksmith in the state of Rhode Island Did you know? C arley was the recipient of a Folk Ar ts Grant from the Rhode Island State C ouncil on the Ar ts

start fine-tuning her blacksmith skills. Within three weeks, she received an offer from a fabrication shop 45 minutes away, working five days a week doing fabrication blacksmithing, and doing demonstrations at her own small forge on the weekends. About six months later, Carley would receive a call that would forever change the course of her life. TV Network HGTV contacted Carley about becoming a contestant on Ellen’s Design Challenge. Having only been a blacksmith for a few months, she enlisted the help of a friend, Andy Phillips, who gave her a crash course in blacksmith training, power hammer techniques, and other skills. Four months later, she would film in LA. Once the show aired, business took off for Carley, who had just recently opened her own business. Overnight, she had gone from making a living off crafting $15 bottle openers, to crafting $2500 dining room tables. Carley was finally able to build a portfolio of projects that she could be proud of, and that would garner her international attention. Carley would eventually relocate back to Rhode Island with her husband, and open Iron Mountain Forge & Furniture in the historic Atlantic Mills in the Olneyville section of Providence, where she is currently located. Soon after returning, she was reconnected with an old colleague from RISD who would become her first employee. Currently, Iron Mountain Forge & Furniture has a staff of four who produce custom projects ranging from signs and jewelry boxes,

One new initiative Carley is excited about is “Sip & Smash”, a collaboration with local breweries, offered on the first Friday night of every month. Participants will learn to forge bottle openers, followed up by a tasting event. For the upcoming holiday season, Iron Mountain Forge & Furniture will be offering classes tailored towards creating gifts for your loved ones. Featured Wedding

Emila and Scott decided they didn't want to go the traditional route for their wedding, and instead opted for an intimate ceremony aboard their custom built sailboat, Oceana, with their guest list of three people. They pulled into port and took off to beavertail to take some portraits during golden hour, and headed back just in time to catch a great sunset at the marina. in hot (pun originally not intended, but now I’m going with it): I hate Summer. That’s right, I said it. I hate the heat and humidity. I hate that I have to wear minimal clothing when my primal instinct is to layer until the cows come home. I hate that my car seats burn my thighs when I sit down, and that my back gets all sweaty and gross whenever I have to drive somewhere because my car’s AC is the equivalent of someone eating a mint and then blowing some mentholated air on my face. Yea, the beach is great, but: traffic, people, parking, expensive food. When you add what feels like a constant 70% chance rain like we’ve had this Summer, I hate it even more. And then consider that everything in style this season (pink, ruffles, cut outs, frills, general daintiness and femininity) is basically the antithesis of my style… I’m ready for Fall, guys. I’m ready to be able to add an exclamation point to my outfit with a cool jacket. This one is from the men’s section at J. Crew, and it is the perfect bomber jacket. My bracelets are from Roxanne Assoulin. I bought them as a Summer arm party, but they’re doing a nice job of planting this outfit firmly in

I’ve spent a long time avoiding graphic tees like the plague, but recently I’ve been loving them. They’re a great way to add a little something to an outfit without being a full blown pattern or a brand logo (I’m not a huge fan of logos as a sartorial statement). This one is part of the Man Repeller x Monogram collaboration. Colder weather also means I get to start rocking my boots again. These Tahari chelsea boots are a DSW find from YEARS ago. They were pretty much the score of the century: beautiful, comfortable, and $80. They are damn near destroyed, and I’ve already been on the lookout for a replacement for about a year to no avail. I am currently zeroing in on these, but the price tag might be a little too steep for me. Are you guys as excited for Fall as I am? I’m getting giddy just thinking about the sweaters, scarves, jackets, and boots. Paired with a good latte or hot apple cider? Eeek. HOW TO LOOK GREAT IN A HEADSHOT with Personal Stylist

JILL MARINELLI MOST PEOPLE (INCLUDING ME) have comfortable. This can be done A simple, well-fitting top or some anxiety about getting their picture taken. What to wear, how to pose… It can be tough to relax enough to capture a photo that looks like the real you. And yet most of us need a headshot for one reason or another, be it work, social media, creative projects, online dating, you name it. So, how can we get that perfect portrait shot? I sat down with my friend and photographer Scott Indermaur to ask for some advice. Scott says the best way to cope with anxiety about being in front of the camera is to follow the photographer’s lead. A good photographer will help you feel strong, empowered and Jill Marinelli is a personal stylist and public speaker as well as a style correspondent for CBS Providence’s The Rhode Show. She teaches her clients and audiences how to express themselves in authentic, meaningful ways and asks, “Does your image reflect who you are and where you want to go?” For help cleaning out your closet, dressing for your body type, and developing your own personal style, visit jmstylist.com.

through conversation, humor, and guidance through different poses. Sometimes it’s not the perfect pose that Scott is looking for, but the unguarded moment that happens afterwards. These moments often result in images that look authentically YOU. It’s important to remember that a good portrait photographer will probably take 100 pictures of you. There will be bad ones! Just like taking a selfie, it takes few (or 10!) tries to capture a look you love. Try not to worry about the shots where your eyes are closed or you have a weird facial expression. It is ok to be unguarded, silly, or laughing because even though those shots may not result in “the one”, the photo taken moments after might just be your favorite.

dress with a bit of texture and a piece of jewelry is a great option. Place color and pattern where you want to draw attention and try to incorporate pieces that make you feel powerful and confident. You’ll be far more relaxed in something you love. Generally speaking, avoid wearing a lot of pattern with a cluttered background. However, as you can see in the image below, rules are meant to be broken! Always bring an extra outfit to your shoot and men, a couple of extra ties. Ladies, apply a little more makeup than usual, and if you aren’t skilled at this, I recommend using a professional makeup artist like Rosie Manousos. As well, if you need help with your hair, get it. WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR? A professional blowout may Scott recommends staying just rock your world. away from solid black or white, Overall, keep it simple, wear and I agree. White can make a bright color, make sure your you look washed out and black clothes fit perfectly and are doesn’t “pop” against a neutral wrinkle-free. Then, do your background. Jewel tones like best to relax and trust the emerald and sapphire are photographer to help you shine! almost universally flattering. OCTOBER 2017 O C EAN STATE 25
