COREY ANNE ABREAU Everything alive starts out small as can be—including vegetables, fruit, and babies like me! Your child is about to be a big brother or sister! But how do you explain what’s happening inside Mommy’s belly? Before I Was Born is a children’s book for new siblings that explains how their baby brother or sister grows during pregnancy—first they’re as big as a seed, then a pear, then as large as a watermelon! Corey Anne Abreau is the mother of two boys, Cole and Carter. Originally from Rhode Island, Corey currently lives in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. The immediate and unbreakable bond Corey felt during pregnancy inspired her to write this story as a way to celebrate the joys of motherhood. lifestyle

2020 has definitely been a whirlwind of change for all of us. The world has been enduring something that has never before been seen, and quarantine has become the new normal. Everything happened so quickly, and because of that, many people (myself included) have had a hard time adjusting. Self isolating, wearing masks and maintaining proper social distance during this time is so very important; however, it can take a toll on your mental and physical well being. So what am I getting at? Why am I stating information that is pretty obvious to everyone? Simple. I want to be a light. I am here to be a light for you and your loved one’s today as best as I can be. Here are some ideas for ways to stay productive and occupied during this stir crazy time we are living in: 1. Keep a Routine If, like me, you have been stuck at home (for the benefit of the greater good) then you

have probably felt a little lost in terms of structure. If there is one thing I have learned, it is that it is so important to keep a routine. It doesn’t have to be complex, it can be as simple as getting up at the same time every morning and enjoying a cup of coffee. That small bit of structure will really make a difference in your day. 2. Get Fresh Air While there are not many places we can go to right now, the outside is still completely open for all of us. So long as we maintain proper social distancing protocols, we are free to enjoy the outdoors as much as we would like. I make it a point to get out at least once a day and take a walk. My walk really makes the difference in my days. It gives me energy, I love getting the fresh air and feeling that warm sunshine on my skin when we are lucky enough to have it! 3. Clean that thing You have Been Avoiding I am 100% guilty of this. There’s that thing on my list that has been lingering for months that I just never seem to have the time to get to. Well, now time is no longer an issue, so I should be able to clean it. While it was still hard to muster up the courage, I have been able to tackle so many home cleaning projects that I have been meaning to get to and, let me tell you, now that it’s done it feels SO great! I was able to clean out the closet that has been a mess for well over a year, organize my cabinets and even get around to deep cleaning the microwave. The hardest part is starting, but once you’re working at it it’s hard to stop. 4. Pick up a New Hobby If there is one thing I have been seeing on social media during this time, it has been how creative JUNE 2020 O CEAN STATE

9

people have become. I adore seeing how many people have found their way to some form of creative outlet and how much they are truly enjoying it. It doesn’t have to be a traditional art form (like painting or drawing), it can be something as simple and as fun as making a dancing TikTok because you forgot how much you love to dance! 5. Take Care of Yourself know that I have always been one to say things like “ I want to have a better skincare routine, but I can never seem to find the time to fit it in” or “I try to workout, but I am always so busy!” Well, now is the time. I have taken some time to do some research for myself and really up my skincare routine, and my skin is thanking me so much for it already. I have also taken this time to learn how to run, and I actually enjoy it so much (which is something I NEVER thought I would say in a million years!) So whether it’s taking care of your skin or working out more, make it a point in every day to take extra care of yourself. When all is said and done, this is a time that is so hard for everyone and we are all learning to adjust to this “new normal”. Please remember to give yourself grace and love one another during this time, because we are all struggling with the pandemic at hand, but on top of that we all have our own individual battles we are handling too. So if some days you feel “run down” and low energy, do not beat yourself up. This pandemic is taking a toll on all of us, and we need to remember that our bodies are working in a way they never have before. Thank you so much to all who are working tirelessly through this pandemic. A big thank you to: - Our frontline workers in the healthcare field who choose to get up daily, head into work and face this pandemic head on to help those who are in need. - Our frontline retail workers. Who stay late and arrive early

10 OC E A N S TAT E JUNE 2020

to make sure everyone can have the food and supplies that they need to maintain a normal, happy and healthy lifestyle (along with all of the new social distancing regulations that they must enforce and adhere to.) - Our delivery drivers/truck drivers who work day and night to get us our mail/ online orders/supplies to stores in need. Your hard work does not go unnoticed and we are thankful. - Our teachers. Who have been working non stop at home to make sure their students can still have the best education possible and still feel as cared for as they were in the classroom. - Anyone and everyone who makes it a point to give grace to others, adhere to the social distancing guidelines that are in place and follow the helpful rules that have been set by our government leaders. As someone who is considered to be “compromised I thank you all from the bottom of my heart and hope we will all be able to get back into a more normal way of life soon enough. But, until then, we need to work together and follow all guidelines given to us. We will only have success, if we work together.
