Rob Beam

> Fourth Season > 33-52 at Oakland > Clarke College, ‘96

The strides that the Oakland University volleyball team has made in Rob Beam’s three years at the helm are amazing. He has guided the Golden Grizzlies to a record of 33-52, which is more games then they had won in the combined in the six season before his arrival (28). In 2007, Beam took over a team that had gone 1-25 the year before. With 10 sophomores and freshmen on a team of 17, the Golden Grizzlies went 8-21, which was more wins than the previous two seasons combined. Lauren Duquette led The Summit League in digs with 5.95 per set, the third best average in league history. In 2008, Oakland matched its record of a year before at 8-21 and tied the school NCAA Division I record for league victories with five. Duquette once again led the Summit in digs and earned second team honors for the second straight year. The Golden Grizzlies started the 2009 season out by winning the West Virginia Classic, the first road tournament title at the D1 level. Oakland finished the season at 10-8 in the Summit and 17-10 overall, setting school D1 records for win in conference and overall as well as having the first winning season since 1997. Adrienne Leone earned first team All-Summit League honors, the first Golden Grizzly to accomplish this since moving to D1. Before coming to Oakland, Beam spent two years with Illinois State, making an immediate impact on the liberos and defensive specialists. In his last season , the Redbirds set a new school record of 2,291 digs, finishing ninth in the nation in digs per game and breaking an Illinois State record that was 22 years old. In his first season in Normal he mentored the Missouri Valley Conference Libero of the Year, Ashley Grubb, who led the league in digs per game. During Beam’s two seasons at Illinois State the

32

Redbirds had a combined record of 35-25 (.583). Beam earned rave reviews as a recruiter, scout, administrator and strategist at Wright State. During his five seasons, the Raiders ranked in the top-15 in the NCAA in digs per game three different times: seventh in 2003, eighth in 2001 and 15th in 2002. They also achieved a best-ever win percentage of .750 in 2001. A native of Sycamore, Ill., Beam was an assistant for both men’s and women’s volleyball at Quincy University from 1999-2000 before joining the Wright State staff the following year. He was the Raiders’ associate head coach for two seasons prior to coming to Illinois State. Beam has extensive club volleyball experience, having coached with both Adversity Volleyball Club and Dayton Juniors. His 2002 Blue Angels age 17 team took third in the Open Division at the Junior Olympic National Championships. He also served as Master Coach for the 16-18 age groups and wrote “Principles for a Competitive Practice,” a guide to be used to help develop the club’s coaches. A 1992 Glenbrook South (Ill.) High School graduate, Beam was the 1996 Clarke College Athlete of the Year while serving as captain of the volleyball team. While completing his bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1996, he coached high school volleyball at Dubuque (Iowa) Senior High School. Beam has also been a leader with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) in both service and research. His presentation at the 2001 AVCA Convention entitled, “Maximizing Coverage at the Point of Attack” has subsequently been published in both Coaching Volleyball Magazine and “Best of Coaching Volleyball Volume 2.” Beam resides with his wife Maria in Rochester Hills.

Q&A WITH ROB BEAM What is the first thing about Oakland University you tell a prospective player on a recruiting visit? “The three things that standout for me about Oakland University are the beauty of our campus, the quality of our academic programs, and the excellence of our athletic facilities. But on a deeper level it is the people involved and the passion they have for developing our student-athletes that make this a special place. In every single department on campus we have amazing faculty and staff. No matter what direction a potential Golden Grizzly is looking academically, they will find a mentor that will inspire them.” How will a player’s experience with the Oakland volleyball program help to prepare them for life after graduation? “I ask our players to do a few simple things every day: chose a positive attitude, give their best effort, eliminate distractions, develop their passions, enjoy the moment, and embrace the people around them. In our program we are trying to develop a certain mentality whether they will go on to a professional career, graduate school, or other pursuit. I want them to immerse themselves in the process of developing around their talents, skills, and passions. That means seeking internships, reading on the subject, and generally refining their expertise so that they can become a leader in their field. While this sounds like serious business, I always remind them that working in this way is fun and should be incredibly rewarding.”

Overall, what is your coaching philosophy? “I think I have two equally important jobs here as head coach. The first is as an educator and the second is as a creator of environment. In terms of pedagogy I think it is the structure of our practices and the level of detail that makes us unique. We prepare our players for the situations that happen in matches. Much of our time is spent in team game play and our systems. Also, we work toward developing the skills, individual and team, required to execute at certain statistical levels. Our players are well aware of what level of execution we need to win The Summit League and we work at getting there every day. I think this makes our gym more of a classroom than anything else. We are all equal partners in the process of getting to a championship level of performance. As for the second, the culture that we have here at Oakland is essential to the growth we have seen in the last two seasons. This culture essentially has two components: one is the belief in competition and the other has to do with the strength of our relationships. I put my players in competitive situations every day. I have dozens of scored drills and even longer running competitions that challenge our players to deliver their best at all times. These extra incentives maintain consistent daily improvement, as well as ensuring that we are having fun in the process. In terms of relationships, we work at creating these elements both on and off the court. If we are going to push each other to perform there has to be a genuine connection and underlying respect between every member of our program. When you see our team interact, you can tell there is something special going on here.
