The Head Coach

Nick O’Shea • Head Coach 17th Year at Oakland • Oakland, 2006 179-105-15 at Oakland / 172-96-15 overall

The Oakland University women’s soccer program has a history of winning. A large part of that winning history is associated with Nick O’Shea who has racked up 179 career wins in 16 seasons with the program. Entering his 17th season as OU’s head soccer coach in 2010, O’Shea has firmly established himself as one of the most successful head coaches in any sport at OU with a.608 career-winning percentage and having guided his teams to at least a share of seven regular season league titles in OU’s 11 seasons in the league. The Golden Grizzlies have also captured six league tournament titles and have made five appearances in the NCAA tournament. Oakland’s most recent league title and NCAA Tournament appearance came in the 2007 season when the Golden Grizzlies appeared in the Summit League championship game for the seventh time in eight seasons and came away with their sixth title with a 3-1 defeat of Western Illinois. The win marked OU’s second consecutive league tournament title, and also their second consecutive tournament championship win over Western Illinois. OU advanced to the NCAA tournament against Purdue, holding the Boilermakers scoreless in the first half before Purdue scored four second-half goals to pull away from the Golden Grizzlies. The Golden Grizzlies also picked up a share of the league regular season title during the 2008 season, the eighth time since joining the league. However, the team eventually fell to South Dakota State in The Summit League title match. The 2009 Oakland team finished the season 7-9-1 and just missed making The Summit League Tournament. OU won the final Mid-Continent Conference title with an elimination of Western Illinois on penalty kicks after the two squads battled to a 1-1 tie. At the NCAA Tournament OU drew top-seed Notre Dame and were within a goal of the Fighting Irish early in the second half before ND pulled away. Under O’Shea’s tutelage, Oakland produced both the Mid-Con’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in 2006. O’Shea has excelled at developing the players that come into the Oakland program into some of the top talent in the conference and region. Since OU’s move to the Mid-Con in 1999, O’Shea has had 25 of his players earn all-conference honors a total of 54 times as well as having eight student-athletes earn Player of the Year accolades and another pair being named the conference Newcomer of the Year. O’Shea guided a young 2005 squad that included just a pair of seniors back to OU’s customary spot in the Mid-Con standings, firstplace. Led by the Mid-Con Offensive Player of the Year, Kristi Swaving, the Golden Grizzlies finished the season with a 9-8-1 record and a 4-2 mark in the Mid-Con. When the end of the season rolled around O’Shea had OU back in the Mid-Con championship game for the fifth time in six seasons. Despite losing 10 seniors and fielding a squad with six freshmen and five sophomores in 2004, O’Shea was still able to get Oakland into the Mid-Con Tournament, finishing third in the regular season standings and picking up impressive wins against Marquette, Syracuse and #13 Michigan. Oakland had one of its best seasons in 2003, when O’Shea guided the Golden Grizzlies to a 15-5-1 record and a perfect 6-0 slate in the Mid-Con, the school’s third undefeated Mid-Con record since joining the conference. OU went on to win its fourth Mid-Con Tournament and played in the NCAA Tournament for a third straight year. After finishing with a regular-season mark of 10-12-1 in 2002, O’Shea led a late-season surge that saw the Golden Grizzlies capture their

second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament when it took the MidCon title on penalty kicks over regular season champion Oral Roberts. In 2001, a victory over Michigan State on October 18 led to O’Shea’s 100th career victory as Oakland head coach. He capped off the season when Oakland University represented the Mid-Continent Conference for the first time in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Grizzlies fell to #20 Cincinnati in the first round, 3-2, a team that went on to the Sweet 16 in the tournament. Oakland finished the season with a 16-4-1 record, breaking school records for most shutouts in a season (12) and tying the marks for consecutive games without a loss (9) and consecutive victories (8). Nick O’Shea was named Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA in 2001. In 2000, O’Shea’s Golden Grizzlies finished 12-5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-Con. Oakland claimed the regular-season title and the MidContinent Conference Tournament Championship. Prior to coming to Oakland, O’Shea was the head women’s coach at Schoolcraft Community College and coached at Livonia Churchill High School. He led Schoolcraft to the National Junior College Athletic Association title in 1987, where he was named NJCAA Coach of the Year, and to a pair of third-place finishes. Livonia Churchill advanced to the MHSAA Class A state finals three times under O’Shea. O’Shea played collegiate soccer at OU in 1982 and 1983. In both seasons the Pioneers advanced to the NCAA Division II semifinals. An All-Region player in 1983, O’Shea came to Oakland after two seasons at Schoolcraft, where he earned second team NJCAA All-America laurels. After college he played professionally with the Kalamazoo Kangaroos and the Toledo Pride of the indoor AISA, and the Tulsa Tornado and Oklahoma City Stampede of the outdoor USL from 1984-1987. O’Shea graduated from Oakland with a bachelor’s degree in general studies with a minor in communication, is a holder of a United States Soccer Federation “A” License. He is the recipient of the prestigious Ron Wigg award for service and dedication to the Region 2 Girls Olympic Development Program. O’Shea resides in Rochester Hills with his wife Leslie-ann and their three children, Ashlyn, Sydney and Rylee. In the spring of 2008, O’Shea was inducted into the Hollie L. Lepley Hall of Honor for his accomplishments as a player at OU.

The member schools pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports, which include: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league has produced four Olympic athletes, four NCAA champions and several All-Americans in the sports of track and field, swimming and diving and cross country. Numerous professionals and several draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball first round picks, a pair of NBA first rounders and one WNBA selection. Former Summit Leaguers Kevin Duckworth (NBA) and Kevin Seitzer (MLB) each were two-time all-stars during their professional careers. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growth among its membership base gives The Summit League a promising future on the landscape of college athletics.

Meadow Brook Hall

Meadow Brook Hall is the fourth largest historic house museum in the United States and is renowned for its superb craftsmanship, architectural detailing and grand scale. Built between 1926 and 1929 as the residence of Matilda Dodge Wilson (widow of auto pioneer John Dodge) and her second husband, lumber broker Alfred G. Wilson, the 110-room, 88,000-square-foot, Tudor-revival style mansion is complete with vast collections of original art and furnishings.

This is Rochester

The holiday season isn’t the only time that Rochester comes alive. The downtown area offers some of the best shopping in the metro Detroit area. And if shoppers can’t find what they’re looking for here, Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills and the Somerset Collection in Troy are just minutes away.

The OU Soccer Field

Opened for play in 2001, the OU Soccer Field has housed the very successful Oakland University men’s and women’s soccer programs that have consistently been on top of The Summit League since joining Division I in 1998. The field accommodates 1,000 fans, which has certainly played a factor in the Golden Grizzlies men posting a 41-16-8 record, and the Golden Grizzlies women posting a 35-24-5 record on the OU Soccer Field. In 2008, Oakland’s men played hosted to its first NCAA College Cup game at the OU Soccer Field, where they took on 2007 College Cup runner-up Ohio State University. OU will host the 2009 Summit League Men’s Soccer Championship, marking the third time in four seasons that the Golden Grizzlies have served as the host team. Oakland’s women have also hosted the Summit League championship three times. In addition to competing at the OU Soccer Field, both the Golden Grizzlies men’s and women’s programs will host three games at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac. The complex has three full size indoor soccer fields, as well as locker rooms and various restaurants. OU also trains at the state-of-the-art facility.

OU Administration

Dr. Gary D. Russi • President Southwestern Oklahoma, ‘69

Gary Russi has served as Oakland University’s president since 1996, and he held the position of interim president from 1995 to 1996. Under his leadership Oakland completed its first strategic plan, 1995 - 2005. The 10-year plan paved the way for Oakland’s unprecedented growth - in stature and size - and is helping the university realize its 2010 vision. In April 2005 Russi announced the university’s first-ever comprehensive campaign, “Innovation and Opportunity The Campaign for Oakland University,” with a goal of raising $110 million by 2010. The Campaign for Oakland University is designed to propel the university to the next level in providing a comprehensive liberal education, raising funds for professorships, scholarships, research endowments, academic programs and improved facilities. As of September 2006 the university has raised more than $70.4 million toward that ambitious goal. Oakland University is a top-rated academic institution that is widely recognized as a university on the rise. With a steadily growing student population that topped 18,000 in fall 2006, Russi has worked with the Oakland community to maintain the highest caliber of academic quality and to build an infrastructure that retains the best features of a small campus setting while offering a large array of programs and services. Under Russi’s leadership, Oakland has introduced more than 40 new academic degree programs since 1995. Full-time faculty number more than 440 as of fall 2005, with 50 new positions approved for 2006-07. These new programs and faculty members have drawn a greater number - and an even more talented group - of students to the university. Average high school GPAs and ACT scores of incoming freshmen continue to rise. Russi’s commitment to experiential learning with flexible class schedules, high quality facilities and classroom technologies, and a wide array of student services and research opportunities is helping Oakland grow into a distinctive university focused on delivering a unique and progressive undergraduate education. In addition, during Russi’s tenure, Oakland has invested - often with state support - more than $190 million to enrich environments for teaching, researching, learning, and living. Capital improvements include a $43-million Science and Engineering building, a $37-million Recreation and Athletics Center, the $17.5-million R. Hugh and Nancy Elliott Hall of Business and Information Technology, the $32million Carlotta and Dennis Pawley Hall and $20-million new student apartments. This trend will continue with the Campaign for Oakland University’s goal of further capital enhancements to support the university’s growth. Russi joined Oakland University in 1993 as vice president for academic affairs where he was responsible for all academic programs, academic support services, research and several university wide ad-

ministrative services. In 1995 he assumed the role of interim president. He held both positions until he was named president in 1996. Russi is also a professor in Oakland’s School of Health Sciences. Prior to joining Oakland, Russi was vice president for research and strategic planning at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where he served as the university’s chief research administrator and promoted institutional direction and support for faculty research endeavors. While there he was instrumental in focusing university staff resources and budgets to strengthen faculty research. Russi was also very involved there, as he is at Oakland, in supporting and promoting undergraduate student research projects. As vice president for research and strategic planning, Russi also led and managed the application of state-of-the-art information technology in the university’s administrative, educational and research activities. Russi’s administrative career at Drake University began in 1973 as a project coordinator in development and fund raising where he authored, co-authored and/or managed 42 funded grant or contract projects ranging from $200 to $900,000. From there he progressed through a variety of administrative positions, including department chair for the Clinical Externship Program, director of university planning, vice provost for planning and budgeting, and executive assistant to the president. Russi participated in the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Program in Academic Administration from 1982-1983 where he served as special assistant to the executive vice president and provost of the University of Nebraska. Russi’s teaching and research experience began at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he was an undergraduate research assistant in chemistry from 1967-1969. His professional teaching and research career began in 1969 when he joined Kansas University as a teaching/research assistant in pharmacology and toxicology. During his tenure at Drake University he held the positions of assistant professor, associate professor and professor of pharmacology and toxicology. From 1973 to 1984, Russi published 17 abstracts and articles in professional journals. Between 1970 and 2006, he co-authored eight scientific articles, dissertations and abstracts. And from 1973 to 1991, he completed 13 invited scientific book reviews. Russi has achieved numerous honors and awards for his many achievements, including the George Wibby Athletic Award from Oakland University (2002), Distinguished Alumni Award from Southwestern Oklahoma State University (1998), Honorary Member of Golden Key National Honour Society at Oakland University (1993 to present), Merck Research Award at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (1969) and Rho Chi Society Undergraduate Research Award at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (1969). Russi currently serves as co-chair of the Oakland County Business Roundtable and vice chair of Oakland County Automation Alley. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Crittenton Hospital and the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, serves as chair of the Presidents Council of State Universities of Michigan and is a member of the Detroit Renaissance Board of Directors. Russi earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacology from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and his doctor of philosophy degree in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Kansas.

OU Administration

Tracy Huth • Director of Athletics Oakland, ‘84

When one thinks of Oakland University athletics, one of the first names that comes to mind is that of secondyear Director of Athletics Tracy Huth. After all, Huth has been involved with Oakland University athletics as a studentathlete, coach, and administrator since the 1980-81 academic year. Huth was appointed Director of Athletics in October 2007 after serving as the interim director for one year, and immediately put in motion an ambitious plan to enhance the overall Oakland University athletics experience, both for student-athletes and fans alike. The result thus far has been a more fan-friendly atmosphere at all OU events, and increasing student-athlete success both athletically and academically. During his first year as OU’s Director of Athletics, Oakland placed more student-athletes on The Summit League Academic All-League teams than any other institution, and Golden Grizzly teams captured league titles in men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming and diving; and saw the school’s first individual league champion in track and field. The OU basketball programs were the only teams in The Summit League to beat ranked opponents, and Oakland University also played host to The Summit League women’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships. In the coming year, OU will host the men’s soccer championship and will once again host the men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships. Prior to making the move into the athletics director’s office, Huth served over nine years as an Associate Athletics Director and Assistant Athletics Director, including a one-year stint OU’s Senior Associate Athletics Director where he was in charge of supervising the department’s operations. While an assistant director, Huth’s primary responsibilities were in the areas of program supervision, student-athlete services, and compliance. During his time as a departmental administrator, Huth has been involved in several league and national committees. In March 2006, Huth was appointed to a four-year term on the NCAA Swimming & Diving Committee. He has also served on the NCAA’s Academic/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet (2001-05) and served as the tournament manager for the first and secondround games in the 2006 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament hosted by Oakland at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Huth currently serves as a member of The Summit League Joint Council, the

league’s Budget Committee and Competition Committee, and also chairs the Men’s & Women’s Swimming & Diving Sport Committee. The strides made by the athletics program during Huth’s tenure should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with his track record as a coach. Huth spent 11 years as the head coach of OU’s women’s swimming and diving program, establishing the Oakland program as the premier program in the country at the Division II level. His teams finished in the top three nationally in nine consecutive seasons, winning five consecutive national championships and three consecutive second-place finishes from 1990-97. Huth was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year three times for his team’s accomplishments. Only Kenyon College (17 consecutive Division III titles from 1984-2000) and Truman State University (six consecutive Division II titles from 2001-06) have posted more consecutive national championships in women’s swimming and diving, while only Texas (five consecutive Division I titles from 1984-88) and Stanford (five consecutive Division I titles from 1992-96) have matched the total of five straight, which stood as a Division II record until 2006. Huth began his coaching career at Oakland in 1985 as an assistant coach with the men’s swimming and diving program, a position he held for two years before taking the reins of the women’s program. Huth remained as the women’s head coach until 1998, when he stepped down to focus on his position as Assistant Athletics Director as OU made the move to Division I. But before Huth became well-known as the highly-successful coach of OU’s women’s swimming program, he earned recognition as one of the top swimmers in the nation. Arguably the most accomplished student-athlete in OU history, Huth earned a rare 24 All-America honors, claiming 13 individual national championships. Huth was a four-time national champion in both the 200- and 400-yard individual medley, and was named NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Year three times. He remains the only swimmer in NCAA history to have won both the 200 and 400 IM four times. In 2002 Huth had the unique honor of being selected to the Oakland University Lepley Hall of Honor for a second time. He and is the only member to be enshrined twice. Originally named to the Hall in 1990 for his swimming accomplishments as a student-athlete, his second honor was in recognition of his coaching accomplishments. A native of Yakima, Wash., Huth is a member of the North Oakland Family YMCA Advisory Board and the March of Dimes “Walk America Troy site committee. He earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Oakland in 1985, and in 1996, Huth earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State University. He currently resides in Clarkston with his wife Jenny Huth and has two children, Kara and Chance.
