Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association

Dear Ranger Family, I have been fortunate to serve on the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association Board for six years, the last three serving as Chair. It has been a privilege and an honor to work beside so many talented and dedicated individuals who place the support of and investment in our students and our University at a high priority. Thank you for all you have done and all you will continue to do for Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Without question, 2020 has been an unprecedented year of uncertainties, apprehension and eroding confidence in leadership on various levels. Our lives took on different routines as we adjusted to a “new normal.” The Pandemic that continues to pervade our lives has brought the best out of people and, unfortunately, perhaps the worst. But as I look back over the past few months and recognize that “change” is imminent for the near future, I can unequivocally say: I am a proud Ranger! The Northwestern faculty, like faculty across the nation and the world, quickly adjusted the learning experience by moving their classes online. They persevered through the craziness around them and they continued to teach. Our Northwestern students were not neglected. They learned and the Class of 2020 graduated, although not with the traditional walk across the commencement stage. Accommodations have been made to encourage a safe, in-person academic experience for the current fall semester. Students have returned to our campuses. Although their faces are masked, the enthusiastic spirit and the quest for knowledge are obvious.

healthcare concerns. Working from home became the new routine. Undeterred, the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association staff launched a community service program and delivered essential goods and pharmaceuticals to individuals and families weary to shop in crowded stores. They assisted the local Meals on Wheels organization by delivering more than 100 meals to residents. With the cancellation of the annual Spring Alumni Reunion, outreach also took a different approach. Phone calls were made to more than 1,000 alumni. Memories of Northwestern were shared and reconnections were made. The examples of leadership, with both responsibility and loyalty to mission, were evident by both Northwestern Oklahoma State University and the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association. This collective leadership provides me with confidence that our future will continue to be successful. We will move forward. We are, after all, Rangers. Ride, Rangers, Ride.

Annual Report 2020

Dear Friends, As I write this letter, we are in the eleventh day of the semester and I am pleased with where we – both the University and the Foundation & Alumni Association – are today. None of us knows what tomorrow’s events will deliver; but, most of us are grateful and hopeful. I have told my staff, friends and family that if anyone can pull off an on-campus semester this fall, I believe it will be us. Every member on our Northwestern team is focused on that goal.

“Greatest Generation” – those individuals who experienced the Great Depression and World War II – were positively shaped by their experience. I expect many of our young people will be shaped and honed by our current world situation and will pleasantly surprise us in the future. This may be the optimist in me or possibly the 15 years’ experience of being impressed by our students on a daily basis. Time will confirm or deny my prediction.

Throughout what has been one of the most extraordinary world events in our lifetimes, I have been able to witness the challenges and decisions faced by our University leaders, staff, faculty and coaches. Every decision was calculated, timely and grounded in the most current information available. Every decision has been centered on preserving the quality of our student educational experience. It has been a confirmation for me that remaining focused on the needs of others, instead of ourselves, is better for our mental health.

Regardless of what happens this year or the next, please know that you have invested in resilient and amazing students who are positioned to change our world for the better. You also have placed your hard-earned funds with an organization that will deliver the needed support through both challenging and pleasant times.

From a financial perspective, I could not be more pleased with the Foundation & Alumni Association’s current situation. At the end of our fiscal year – June 30, 2020 – our return on investment was -.24 percent. That is about as close to not having a loss as we can achieve during an unprecedented financial market. When we compare this figure to the -30 percent we experienced in 2008 and 2009, we can start to see the investment acumen we have amassed in the last 12 years. I want to personally thank the many brilliant minds of our Investment Committee and 6th Meridian, our investment advisor, who worked diligently to place us in the enviable position we are in today. I have read multiple accounts about how the

Rangers, This year has been nothing short of unique. Although COVID-19 has brought many changes and strange situations, we continue to adopt our new normal in our classrooms and are learning how adaptable we can be. Thank you to our community for welcoming our students back to campus and helping us enforce a face covering policy within our campus buildings. We know, without a doubt, that our Ranger Nation always pulls together, and this situation is no different. We are thrilled to have our students back on campus and in our communities. This year, we saw another decrease in state appropriations. With cost increases and an unexpected decrease in enrollment due to the pandemic, we made the tough decision to increase tuition and fees by three percent. While we understand that this affects our students and their families, we trust that these decisions are made to create a university that can continue to support its students, employees and communities.

students hope that their future will be bright, regardless of the issues at the state and national levels. From all of us at Northwestern, thank you for your continued support and generosity. You are changing lives and creating a better outcome for these students. We have an incredible Ranger family that continues to give charitably of your time, your effort and your resources.

Dr. Janet Cunningham President, Northwestern Oklahoma State University Class of 1976

While we hope to see an upward and positive turn in our economy through the next months, we know that we need your support now more than ever. When you get together with friends, ask them about their great experiences they had at Northwestern. When you see a college student in the community, thank them for choosing Northwestern. When you talk to a high school student, tell them about the affordable and quality education they will receive at Northwestern. While we recruit students to campus on a daily basis, we ask that you also reach out to those you know. Telling your Northwestern story gives

undaunted “As I drove into Alva the first time in 2018, I asked ‘Are we in the right place? Is this the main road into Alva?” recalled Sunday Deng, Northwestern junior. “What I’ve come to realize about Alva and Northwestern is that it is the people who make this place. With the relationships I’ve made and the support I’ve been given, I know I’m where I’m supposed to be.” Deng is a junior majoring in health and sports science. He is also an offensive lineman on the Ranger football team. At 6’-7” and weighing in at a little more than 280 pounds, Deng is an imposing figure. Perhaps more remarkable is his strength of character. Quiet and reserved, his strength comes from within. His determination to succeed is its unfailing partner. Born in South Sudan, Deng moved with his mother and two sisters to Egypt at the age of two. At six years old, Chicago became his hometown for five years before moving to Des Moines, Iowa. “The first challenge I remember was learning both the English language while adjusting to the American culture,” Deng said. “Teachers helped me so much.” In eighth grade, Deng tried his hand at basketball. He laughs at that memory. “I wasn’t coordinated enough for basketball. When I went to Roosevelt High, a coach talked me into wrestling. Wrestling made me an athlete. I then played left tackle on the football team for three years. With my coach’s mentoring and support, I realized sports could get me into college.” Deng’s college career began at the University of Nebraska Kearney. The first semester went well, but the coaching staff changed mid-year and Deng found himself without the mentoring support and encouragement he had once appreciated. His grades suffered, scholarships were at risk, and he felt lost. “My mom taught me to not make situations worse than they are. I believe when the door closed at Kearney, God opened the door to Northwestern.” Ken Gordon, defensive coordinator for Ranger football, knew Deng while he was a coach at Kearney. He was instrumental in recruiting both Deng and Deng’s best friend, Kentrez Bell, wide receiver, to Northwestern. Bell accompanied Deng to Alva on their first trip to Alva. Gordon has been a strong mentor for Deng. “Sunday is both a great athlete and a great person,” said Gordon. “He doesn’t give up. He

pushes through the struggles and he makes happen what needs to happen. He owns strength of character.” In addition to Gordon’s mentoring, Deng has found encouragement from faculty. “I admit, I don’t like math,” Deng shared through a wide grin. “When I received an A in College Algebra, I celebrated! And I knew it was because Mr. Meeker took the time and had the determination to help me be successful.” “Sunday was a great student to have in class,” said Keenan Meeker, Instructor of Mathematics. “He was a hard worker and asked questions…he always had a positive attitude and came to class ready to learn. What made him successful was his work ethic. His work ethic helped him to be successful in my class, and it will continue to help him be successful in life.” Deng plans to pursue a career in sports management or sports training. In the meantime, he is satisfied in following a path to excellence. “I’m still working on myself. My mother taught me to push forward and not dwell on failure. I don’t want to disappoint her. I’m looking forward to being the first of her six children to earn a college degree. “I want to have a positive impact on people. When my little brother let me know that he wanted to be just like me, it provided a clear sense of responsibility. A purpose. Coaches, teachers and others have done this for me. “I’m in the right place here at Northwestern.”

unbounded From the football field to the student newsroom, junior Nick Dill bleeds red and black. A wellknown face around campus, Dill is active in many student organizations, from Student Government Association to the Northwestern News. On top of his clubs and organizations, Dill also holds a position as a kicker for the Northwestern Rangers football team, which he represents on the Student Athlete Advisory Council. “I’m really passionate about being involved on campus,” said Dill. “I didn’t get involved in activities in high school, but I’ve become adamant about attending school events and volunteering to serve at them as well.” A native of The Colony, Texas, Dill came to Northwestern undecided in his major. He soon found the area that combined two of his loves: sports and communicating with others. “I chose mass communications because I love talking to people and I’m a fair writer, too. I felt that those are two of my pretty good traits. Mass communications is what I’d be most interested in. I’m also passionate about sports. After graduation I would like to work in sports communications.” As a student in the Mass Communications Department, Dill has received hands-on experience in writing and editing newspapers with Northwestern News, the weekly newspaper produced by the students. He is also gaining experience in newscasting with NWTV7, the student-managed TV station. “The best part about mass communications is there is so much variety in it. I can learn writing skills, verbal communication skills, strategic skills, etc. There are so many possibilities in mass communications that I can go almost any direction I want to.” The connections built at Northwestern impact students’ lives, and Dill finds no exception to this. He credits his success to many faculty and students on campus. “Andrea Lauderdale, my Ranger Connection teacher, helped steer me toward mass communications. She is like my mentor. I know if I

need anything, I can go to her. She helped me get a position in the Recruitment Office on campus, where I’ve made many connections. “The relationships I’ve built with my coaches and teammates on the football team are invaluable. With Student Government Association, I’ve been able to create relationships with non-student athletes. This is something I’ve been encouraging student athletes to do…become involved with more non-athletic clubs and organizations. “Family is a big thing for me. My parents have provided for me to excel and my motivation is to make them proud. They want to see me be successful so it motivates me to do it for them.” With two years of college under his belt, Dill knows that he has made the right decision to attend Northwestern. Its small, close-knit culture helps him learn. He realizes the involvement in more organizations and activities provides him with many opportunities, further solidifying he made the right choice. “The professors know you on a first-name basis. I also love how supportive everyone is here. The faculty and staff will do anything to help get you to your goal. Whether you’ve had them for a class or not, their best interest is to help you succeed.” Whether it’s serving at Aloha Week or campaigning new members for Spanish Club, Dill shows his heart through his dedication to his campus and his university. With a bright future and a love for people, there is no limit to what he can accomplish as a proud Northwestern Ranger.

unlimited New college students often have specific education plans in mind. They know what they want to major in, what clubs they will be a part of and the classes they believe they will enjoy the most. As Yosbelli Lora learned, the anticipated plan is not always the best path to take. The daughter of immigrants, Lora graduated from Ringwood (Okla.) High School. This milestone was one she considered impossible. “I never pictured myself graduating high school, let alone attending college,” said Lora. “I was at the very bottom of my class in high school.” Lora attended the Upward Bound program at Northwestern, but still had doubts that Northwestern would be the place for her. “The Upward Bound directors saw potential in me and the camp counselors also were college students. They became my role models. I thought, ‘If they can go to college and do all these great things, why can’t I?’” Once Lora came to Northwestern, she developed her education plan to include a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She soon discovered the plan did not work for her. “I saw what money could do and my world started to revolve around being able to one day make the most money. I realized I had chosen business admin for the wrong reasons. Instead, I wanted to contribute to society in a different way. “I wanted to find a direction for my life and I chose to become a psychology major. It is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I actually look forward to learning.” Lora anticipates using her psychology degree to give her a leg up with her future endeavors, including gaining her master’s degree or a second bachelor’s degree. “I’m thinking about applying to the master’s program. If I don’t get accepted, I hope to go in to nursing. At the end of the day, I have more clarity of what I want to do with my career. I think at the end of all this, whether that’s in two years or five years, I want to wear a white coat and stethoscope. “Today, people who are immigrants or those

who don’t have legal documentation won’t seek medical help because of the fear they may never see their families again. I feel that healthcare should never be denied to anyone regardless of their circumstances. As a multilingual, Hispanic female with a psychology background, I can be an asset for those in that situation.” Lora is a well-recognized face on campus due to her involvement in organizations and her engaging personality. “I looked at the Student Government Association officers as leaders during my first two years of college. They went the extra mile to make sure that my college experience was the most enjoyable it could be. As a senior, I’m giving back. This year, I became the SGA treasurer. I want to impact people in a positive way. “My favorite parts about Northwestern are the environment and the people. Students are regarded and respected as individuals. Professors go the extra mile to make sure I understand the material.” Lora feels that college is a new chapter that creates opportunities. Keeping an open mind about majors and courses is important, as well as getting involved in student organizations. Northwestern provided Lora with both opportunities and options. “Obviously, I learned that I needed to go down a different path and my mindset needed to change.” A leader with drive and determination, Lora is set to make her mark on the world. DONOVAN REICHENBERGER FUNDRAISING AWARD RYAN BOWEN HEAD BASEBALL COACH NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY Established in 2010 by the Northwestern Foundation & Alumni Association, the Donovan Reichenberger Fundraising Award recognizes the private fundraising efforts of Northwestern Oklahoma State University faculty and staff. Named for Reichenberger and his example of generosity and fundraising service, the award honors an individual who seeks to further the mission and vision of the university, allowing continued prosperity during a critical time of diminishing state support. Ryan Bowen was awarded in 2020 for his fundraising efforts for Ranger Baseball. He has raised an average of $30,000 for his program in the three years he has been head coach at Northwestern. Bowen took the lead in securing baseball hitting software, which is used to improve student athletes' batting performances. Additionally, he has led letter writing campaigns and three online crowd-funding campaigns, managed multiple baseball camps and directed the Dugout Club Golf tournament each fall. In every capacity, Bowen has admirably represented his program and Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

In 2020, the leadership of Northwestern has chosen to make a strategic move to secure funding for a long-term student leadership emphasis at Northwestern with the creation of the Northwestern Leadership Trust. Oklahoma State University has honed raw leadership aptitude in its students. It started with teacher candidates who became leaders in the classroom and in their communities. established Northwestern as a highly successful creator of young leaders who have grown to make a huge impact on our world. In 1973, Northwestern began the process of formally recognizing our successful leaders with the first-ever Outstanding Graduate class. NORTHWESTERN LEADERSHIP TRUST commissioned with the challenge to seize opportunities to lead while a student at Northwestern. This year will celebrate 20 years of this program with tremendous success for our students, both before and after graduation. Simultaneously, the Presidential Partners Program was created. This special annual giving program allowed the University President the ability to fund items of importance not supported by any other funding source. This was an excellent move for the University but was limited to funding raised from the previous year’s fundraising success. The unpredictability of available funding made planning for long-term programs difficult. In spite of this limitation, there were many strategic executive investments made to include student recruiting scholarships, educational travel for students, band uniforms and scholarship pageants. In 2007, Northwestern took another step forward by formalizing its leadership emphasis with the addition of a minor in leadership. For the first time, a student could formalize – with collegiate study and credit – the investigation and examination of leadership as an art and science. This same year, the Presidential Partners Program was renamed the President’s Association. Several donors have already made the long-term commitment to this endowment with pledges and immediate 22

gifts. Effective immediately, all funds given to this account will be restricted to the endowment. This restriction will protect the principle in perpetuity for the long-term benefit of a collegiate leadership emphasis at Northwestern. There has never been a more relevant and important time in our world to create a source of excellent, ethically-driven, young leaders. For all of us, this is an opportunity to positively change our world for the better. Please join us in our quest to make a better nation and a better world with your personal investment.

Dear Friends, The news in today’s environment provides an alarming number of poor leadership examples. While bookstores and the online Amazon marketplace provide an overwhelming number of books on leadership, our nation is struggling to find principled leaders who will stand up and do the right thing when no one is watching. Since 1957, when Northwestern adopted the motto “Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow,” we have deliberately embraced the responsibility and role of training future leaders. As we elevate the role of Northwestern Oklahoma State University in the 21st century, the need to advance our leadership curriculum has never been more critical. Today is the time to invest in our future. Together, we can create a premier student leadership education and experience at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. This comprehensive program will provide the leaders we desperately need for tomorrow. We look forward to your participation in the Northwestern Leadership Trust. Sincerely,
