Every day at Northwest Community College people realize dreams and see how education changes their lives. Donating to bursaries, awards and scholarships at NWCC supports our students. Together we’ll transform lives and help those individuals have a positive impact on entire communities. Together we are building the next generation of citizens.

Giving to the students at NWCC presents more opportunities for them to study close to home. Together, we are creating a local workforce invested in our communities and our Northern region.

It is easy to give to NWCC. What to consider when establishing an award at NWCC. • What type of award would you like to create? • What will you name your award? • How are you going to fund it? • What are the details and conditions for the students who apply for your award?

Approximately 50% of students who attend NWCC stay in the region after exiting the college. Their enhanced skills and abilities bolster the output of local employers, leading to higher regional income and a more robust economy. Source: BCColleges, 2012-13

Types of Awards Create needs-based awards to help students who might not otherwise have opportunity to study. Or focus on merit to recognize high-achievers and attract them to NWCC. •Scholarships: Establish a new or give to an existing student scholarship. The criteria are based on academic achievement. •Bursaries: Recipients of bursaries meet criteria based on financial need. •Awards: Criteria are based on a combination of merit, financial need and other requirements like community involvement or leadership. This can be a one time or an annual award that will help students achieve success in their given field of study.

Name your award Create a relationship with NWCC and our students that lives on forever. You might choose to honour or memorialize a family member or friend. Or put it in your own name, or the name of your business. Perhaps name it after a group of friends or entire class who want to create a scholarship to contribute to over a number of years. The choice is up to you.

After receiving an award to help pay for my tuition, I was able to concentrate more on my studies and less on financial stresses.

Details & Conditions We recommend making the conditions of your award as broad as possible. This is to help ensure that a candidate can be found. Support a specific program or field of study: You can direct the award to a specific department or faculty. Some donors contribute back to their own field of study, or to that of a person for whom they are naming the award. Duration: Offer the award for one year or make it renewable. A renewable gift provides ongoing financial support when studying for longer than one year at NWCC. Value: The amount is up to you. Consider looking at the costs for students to attend NWCC (see page 4).
