It all starts at NWCC. You can transfer NWCC courses to a number of institutions in BC that offer teaching degrees. As a teacher, you are more than just an educator: you are a mentor, a confidant and a friend. A common reason to become a teacher is to make a difference in the lives of as many students as you can.
The UNBC School of Education offers the following programs: Terrace, BC Either a two-year concurrent Elementary (grades K-7) Stream or a two-year post-degree program runs every odd-numbered year. It is designed for university students who wish to complete a five-year Bachelor of Education degree or who wish to complete a B.Ed degree following their first undergraduate degree. Prince George, BC A two-year post-degree program that offers Elementary (grades K-7) and Secondary (grades 8-12) Streams. It is designed for university students who have already completed a first degree and who wish to continue their education in order to become teachers.
Erika Barton A teaching degree landed Erika Barton in a job teaching library subjects to children in a local elementary school where she feels the rewards of teaching every day. The job came after years of upgrading and university credit courses at NWCC and then transferring those credits to UNBC. She feels grateful to have had the opportunity to complete it all while staying in the North. “My cohort was the first one through UNBC and before that I would have had to move away to complete my degree,” says Erika. “I was not willing to move, so I applied as soon as I heard it was offered in Terrace.” Erika finds great joy teaching students and embraces her ability to provide support to those who need it most. “I wasn’t always the best student so I feel like I have a good understanding for children who might be struggling,” says Erika. “It’s extremely rewarding to see the difference I can make in a child’s life.”

Program at a Glance. To earn the first 30 of 90 credits needed to apply to UNBC's Bachelor of Education program, you can take the following courses at NWCC:
YEAR ONE (2017/18) In the first year, students should take all Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) required courses and take a full year of courses in disciplines in which NWCC regularly offer year two courses. ENG 101/102 Required by all BEd programs and TRB History 105/106 Recommended by UNBC. Gives six credits Canadian content required by TRB. Prepares you for year two history courses to be taken as senior credit. CPSC 111/MATH 190 Provides relevant elective and Math course and is recommended by UNBC BEd. Gives 3 Math credits required by TRB. EITHER two semesters BIO with lab OR two semesters GEO with lab - gives three credits lab science required by TRB, paves way for Yr 2 BIO or GEO courses for senior credit ANY two semesters of a social science such as: ANTH, SOC, PSYCH, CRIM, POLI or FNST provides a relevant social science and paves the way to take second year courses in same discipline as "senior credit". 30 credits total.

Taryn Armstrong Taryn Armstrong first started studying at NWCC when she completed her Special Education Assistant Certificate, which partly inspired her to continue her education into the Bachelor of Education degree program. “I’ve always found it rewarding to make connections with kids and making a career out of it just seemed like the natural choice,” says Taryn. “And as a teacher I can provide financial support to my family with a steady and secure job.” Taryn completed the required 90 credits at NWCC and transferred those to UNBC. She will graduate with her Bachelor of Education in Spring 2017. “There was a great benefit finishing my degree in Terrace and I know I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for NWCC,” says Taryn. “The instructors were awesome and with the small classes it was easy to have good relationships with them.”

Program at a Glance. The following will complete the 90 credits, including 30 credits at the senior level, required to apply to the UNBC Bachelor of Education program. Credits may be taken at NWCC, UNBC or other institutions. Courses taken must be in TRB identified teachable subjects. See an NWCC or UNBC advisor for details.

Shayla Billy Shayla Billy is in her third year of studies at NWCC. She is working towards finishing her teaching degree at the University of Northern BC, located in Terrace. “When I found out that I could complete my whole degree in Terrace, I was so happy,” says Shayla. “I love the outdoors and the environment here.” Shayla’s years at NWCC have included summers full of intensive field school studies where the experience and the instructors inspired her teaching style. “I feel lucky to have had so many great instructors at NWCC who continue to test the waters in subjects with an adventurous style.”
