VET Health Services graduates in the Simulation Hospital at West Coast Institutes McLarty campus.

School students pave their way into a nursing career

The students spent one day a week throughout Year 11 and 12 completing a Vocational, Education & Training (VET) in School program to learn about the nursing profession. They are now qualified to work as Assistants in Nursing alongside Registered and Enrolled Nurses. Mindarie Senior College graduate Kate Nicholson (17), who has recently been shortlisted for the state VET Certificate of Excellence found the course fun and beneficial. “Because the course is so practical and hands on, I was

Because the course is so practical and hands on, I was able to gain clarity around the passion I have for nursing and the health industry.

15 local secondary students are ready to leave school and hit the workforce after completing a Certificate III in Health Service Assistance through West Coast Institute in Joondalup.

able to gain clarity around the passion I have for nursing and the health industry,” said Kate. “This program will be a great stepping stone for me to get into the Diploma of Enrolled Nursing so that I can

get qualified to become an Enrolled Nurse and then, later, go onto to study a Registered Nursing qualification at University.” Nursing lecturer and Health Services VET Co-ordinator Hazel Neale said the program engages students whilst they’re still at school and provides them with industryspecific and employability skills that provide them with an understanding of the world of work. “It really is amazing to see the personal growth and progression of these students over the two year program, and I am sure they are going to pave fantastic careers for themselves,” she said. More than half of the graduates plan to pursue further study in the area of nursing. Some graduates have used their Certificate as a pathway into University and many are portfolio ready for a variety of Bachelor Degrees in health and social sciences. Manager of VET at Mindarie Senior College, Tracey Loughnan said the program allows students to make the connection between on and off the job training by providing course theory, simulated ward experience and actual work experience at an aged care facility. “Because of the hands-on nature, we see that many students who undertake these programs with West Coast Institute complete it with a much clearer idea of their career choice once finishing school,” she said.

Life’s Little Treasures Foundation Walk for Prems On Sunday 27th October 2013 in excess of 3,000 people joined forces and participated in the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation’s annual “Walk for Prems” charity event at various locations around Australia. The event, now in its 4th year, is the flagship event of the charity that provides support, education and understanding to the parents of infants born premature or sick, and has grown rapidly allowing the Foundation to secure funds that enable them to continue their important work. The largest ‘Walk’ was held in Melbourne, where participants could enter a 10k/5k race, or complete a 5k 8

walk to show their support for families. Supporters in Melbourne were lucky enough to have guest appearances by Brooke Hanson, Matt Tilley, Claire Bowditch and crowd favourite Peppa Pig. While in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and Launceston participants were able to take part in a social walk that not only unites the premature birth community but also raises awareness of the cause. For the first time ever, each event held a remembrance ceremony, releasing white doves, to reflect the infants whose battle for life was just too hard. Co-Founder and CEO of the Foundation Shusannah Morris says, “The Walk for Prems is the only event of its kind in Australia, it gives families who have been through the

traumatic journey of having a premature baby a place to come together & celebrate their Little Treasures, along with thousands of other families, who have all been through a similar journey. “The Walk also raises vital funds which enable us to continue providing our services to families in need of support. It was the most rewarding sight on the day, to look out on all the families attending and see the happy, smiling faces. We realise how important it is for families to have access to information and a community they can identify with and feel a part of. Someone who truly understands the challenges that they face.” The Life’s Little Treasures Foundation is Australia’s leading charity dedicated to providing support, friendship and information, specifically tailored for families of children born premature or sick. Its services are available in the hospital (neonatal and special care units) and in the community when families come home. The Foundation is continually searching for new and innovative ways to provide support for the families of neonatal patients. They have produced a hospital folder, a vital resource for any family, two smart phone apps, an extremely informative website, social media pages, community based support groups, a parent support network, and more recently, the Books for Bubs program. Paediatrics/Child Health The Telethon Speech & Hearing team celebrating Loud Shirt Day 2013

Telethon Speech & Hearing What is Loud Shirt Day? The loudest day of the year, Loud Shirt Day (www. loudshirtday.com.au) was celebrated in October. Western Australians from around the State were encouraged to wear their loudest clothing and GET LOUD for deaf children. Friends, family or work colleagues fundraised to help Telethon Speech & Hearing raise vital funds for programs which teach children with hearing impairments to listen and speak. Thanks to the assistance of The Health Scoop Magazine, Telethon Speech & Hearing attracted participants from professionals in specialist medical facilities, audiology clinics, physiotherapy practices, aged care facilities, and hospitals. 10

A big THANK YOU to all the WA Loud Shirt Day participants who GOT LOUD for the children who attend Telethon Speech & Hearing. Telethon Speech & Hearing fundraising target for 2013 is $50, 000. What is a hearing impairment? Deafness is the most common disability in Australia. One to two babies in 1000 are born with a hearing loss in both ears. Some babies will only have hearing loss in one ear. The severity and causes of hearing loss vary. Permanent hearing loss can be caused by hereditary

conditions, genetic disorders or exposure of an unborn baby to diseases such as rubella, loud noises, trauma and illness. A permanent hearing loss is called sensorineural loss. Most often this is due to the damage or absence of nerve cells in the cochlea. Babies and children with sensorineural loss are fitted with devices such as hearing aids or Cochlear implants to attain normal levels of hearing. Hearing is critical for the development of speech and language. It also helps children learn how to distinguish and react to sounds such as a police siren, school siren or car horn. Babies can get their hearing test a few days after birth Early diagnosis of hearing loss is the key to successful early intervention. Babies whose hearing loss is detected early can get quick access to further testing and parents can be given support and information as soon as possible. Children whose hearing loss is identified early and who start intervention strategies before six months of age have the best chance of developing age appropriate speech and language. How is hearing tested? A specially developed newborn hearing screening device uses AABR (Automated Auditory Brainstem Response) technology to test a baby’s hearing. Small sticky tabs are placed on the nape of the baby’s neck, shoulder and forehead. Small headphones go over each ear and the baby hears a soft clicking sound. The AABR machine measures responses from the baby’s hearing nerve on each side. The test is accurate, quick and reliable. It is safe and not painful and most babies sleep through the test. Results are available immediately and the Telethon Speech & Hearing screener will explain them to parents straight away. The results of the test are recorded and if there are any concerns about the baby’s hearing after the screening

test, the baby will be referred to a specialist paediatric audiologist for further testing. How can children with hearing impairment learn to listen and speak? At Telethon Speech & Hearing, babies and children together with their families attend programs for listening and spoken language therapy called Auditory-Verbal Therapy (AVT). AVT uses an individual’s residual hearing to teach the child who is hearing impaired to listen and speak. Amplification devices such as FM (frequency modulated) systems, Cochlear implants and hearing aids are used in conjunction with AVT. At Telethon Speech & Hearing, there are six fully certified Auditory-Verbal therapists. There are seven in WA. AVT has become an integral part of the Centre’s hearing impairment program. The principles of AVT include: • Early detection: Auditory-Verbal instruction begins upon diagnosis of hearing loss. • Appropriate amplification: Amplification technology will maximise the individual’s residual hearing. • Parental participation: Parents are taught through guidance, training and demonstration how to become the primary facilitator’s of their child’s oral language development. • Listening to speak: The child learns to speak through listening to natural sounding speech. Correct spoken models of language are crucial to teaching the child to monitor vocalisations. Visual cues are not encouraged. • Assessment: On-going monitoring and evaluation of speech, listening and comprehension skills are integral. • Integration result: AVT (with appropriate amplification) enables a deaf or hearing impaired child to develop auditory receptive skills (understanding language) enough to attend a mainstream school and to enjoy greater social independence. Telethon Speech & Hearing Centre is a charity based in Wembley, Western Australia. For further information, please visit: www.tsh.org.au 11

Telethon Institute for Child Health Research Toddler Talk Children’s ability to communicate is one of their most important developmental achievements. It builds a foundation for everything that is to come; their personal relationships, their education, their careers and their ability to navigate the challenges and opportunities that life presents.

These milestones build on earlier developmental achievements such as making eye contact, smiling and laughing when a parent is talking to the child; taking turns (eg, to blow raspberries); imitating others (eg, waving, splashing in the bath) and using sounds and gestures (eg, pointing).

For the majority of children, language development begins between 12 and 24 months of age and typically this will involve three important milestones around that time; understanding the words being spoken to them (around 8 months old), uttering their own first words (around 12 months) and combining 2-3 words in simple sentences (with an expected vocabulary of at least 50 words) at the 24 month mark.

Just when these milestones will happen is up to the individual. There is striking variability in the specific age of onset of the achievement of each of these milestones and the reasons for these individual differences are largely unknown. For example, in a population based sample of Australian two-year-olds, the number of words produced ranged from 0 – 679 words.

12

What we do know for certain is that a child’s first words are some of the most highly anticipated and highly celebrated milestones in early development. But for parents’ with a two year old late talker, it can also be a time of worry and uncertainty. So what does it mean to be a late talker? ‘Late talking’ or ‘language delay’ are used to describe otherwise healthy toddlers who for whatever reason do not meet age expectations when it comes to either understanding the language being spoken to them, or their own language use and ability. We still don’t know why some children start to talk later, which late talkers will catch-up and which may go on to be diagnosed with language impairment. What we do know is that research from our LOOKING at Language study shows that around 13% of two year olds are late talkers and that boys are known to be three times likely to experience delays than girls. Our research also shows that about 1-in-5 late talkers will go on to be diagnosed with impaired language at school age. On the positive side, we also know that most late talkers do catch up. Our research shows that by seven years of age the majority (80%) of late talkers are back on track and that boys are at no greater risk than girls. All too often parents will start to blame themselves or their home environment for their child’s language delay. Whilst studies do show that children with a family history of late talking are more likely to also be delayed, the research has very clearly dispelled the myth that late talkers are the result of being in a home where children are not spoken to enough or because of some other family inadequacy.

Either way, the advice and support provided by a speech pathologist will ensure a late talking two year old gets the best help they can...

Why we start to speak when we do is still one of life’s great mysteries and also the subject of key research programs such as those being conducted by the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research through its LOOKING at Language (LAL) program.

infancy to 7 years, clearly showed that a mother’s education, income, parenting style or mental health had no impact on a child’s likelihood of being a late talker. Whilst research programs such as ours continue to delve into the mysteries of why some children are late talkers and others develop to meet expected language milestones, there is one certainty. It is essential for parents to ask for further advice if they are concerned about their child’s talking. Delayed development may simply be a matter of timing but late talking can also be a red flag for other conditions such as hearing impairment, autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. Either way, the advice and support provided by a speech pathologist will ensure a late talking two year old gets the best help they can in improving their language skills at such a crucial development age. The Telethon Institute for Child Health Research is one of the largest, and most successful medical research institutes in Australia, comprising a dedicated and diverse team of more than 500 staff and students. The Telethon Institute is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all children by working with clinicians and policy makers on the most common, costly and debilitating health issues. Postgraduate Courses From February 2014, all postgraduate courses will be delivered online, with the continued support of qualified tutors and program coordinators, making it easier to study anywhere, anytime. Our newly upgraded learning platform, CNnect, will also provide networking opportunities between students through virtual classrooms. Graduate Certificate in Neonatal Nursing focuses on the nursing care of neonates within a holistic framework of trans-culturally appropriate, individualised and developmentally supportive, family-centred care. It aims to encourage professional and ethical understanding of clinical practice development for the improvement of outcomes of the sick and convalescing infant and their

family. Intensive care and special care streams are available within this course. Graduate Certificate in Paediatric Nursing Studies is designed to foster a purposeful and child-centred approach to children’s services and aims to cultivate excellence in provision of nursing care to sick infants, children and young adults, within a family-focussed practice. In February 2014, ACN offers three specialist streams to meet the individual needs of students and allow nurses to advance their specialty knowledge and expertise: General Paediatrics, Paediatric Emergency and Paediatric Intensive Care. Graduate Certificate in Child and Family Health Nursing provides nurses with a sound understanding of child and family health nursing within legal, moral and ethical frameworks that reflect current models of care and government policy and practice initiatives. Students will explore issues related to primary health care and health promotion, family dynamics, structure and functions within their community and many more. the national guidelines for immunisation and has been approved by NSW Health, Victorian Health, Tasmanian Health and South Australian Health. The aim of ACN’s Immunisation course is to familiarise registered nurses with the theoretical underpinnings, legal requirements, regulations and clinical application of the processes and procedures required for immunisation administration. Feedback from our previous students indicates that after completing the course, they felt more confident in the vaccination process and informing others of the best practice guidelines. Kylie from NSW said that she especially enjoyed the discussion through the online classroom, as well as the support provided by the tutor: ”I have learnt so much and now I feel empowered to share information and dispel unhealthy and inaccurate attitudes against immunisation. I have referred many of my colleagues to ACN and encourage everyone to complete this course. The workload in my opinion was appropriate, the tasks were uncomplicated and straightforward.” This course is offered part-time over 12 weeks and conducted online, which means students can access the content at a time and location convenient to them. Content includes: the theoretical foundations of immunisation; the immune system and vaccination; epidemiology and vaccine preventable diseases; myths and realities of immunisation and more.
