The University of Notre Dame Australia

Notre Dame’s Exercise Physiology students provided health and physical rehabilitation to community groups in Cambodia as part of a significant practical experience.

The University of Notre Dame Australia Cambodian experience provides invaluable learning opportunities Providing health and physical rehabilitation to community groups in Cambodia was a remarkable opportunity for Exercise Physiology students at The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Fremantle Campus as they gained significant practical experience as part of their course of study. Students studying in the School of Health Sciences offered their skills and expertise to community groups including the Angkor Association for the Disabled, the Cambodian Diabetes Association and the Physical Rehabilitation Centre, and to more than 200 children at Choun Loung Primary School. At these centres, students provided landmine amputees, 6

Polio victims, children with Cerebral Palsy, club foot and other congenital limb defects, and Type 2 diabetes patients with exercise prescription and additional support required for successful rehabilitation. Exercise Physiology lecturer at Notre Dame’s Fremantle Campus, Tanya Blee, said students had daily hands-on experience through exercise assessment and individual exercise rehabilitation in all centres, as well as the opportunity to train up a person at each centre to continue applying their work. “To gain accreditation in Exercise Physiology the students need to be exposed to and gain experience in a number of different pathologies such as cardiac, metabolic,

respiratory and neurological conditions,” Ms Blee said. “Cambodia is a fragile country slowly repairing itself after many years of war. Land mines are still being cleared and, consequently, there are still a large number of explosion victims and the country’s health care system is either nonexistent or extremely expensive. “Volunteering our services to those less fortunate whilst practising our skills, experiencing a new culture and making a positive difference in someone’s life is an invaluable and amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience.” Graduate Diploma of Exercise Science student, Ryan Gaias, said the highlight of the Cambodia immersion was working with people who appreciated his time and knowledge. “My overall experience was amazing – a good mix of learning, self-development and pleasure. It is the best practicum placement I have done and could possibly do,” Mr Gaias said. “One of the main things I took from the trip to Cambodia was that we generally live above our means as part of a Western society. It made me appreciate the life I have in Australia, although at the same time, feeling like I could be living ‘simpler’ – slowing down, absorbing more information and enjoying life’s experiences on a greater level.” Ms Blee hopes to offer this one-of-a-kind practical opportunity to Health Sciences students each year. “Working with these types of patients is within our scope of practice as Exercise Physiologists. Given that these patients had very little or no exercise rehabilitation, it highlights how effective exercise rehabilitation can be,” Ms Blee said. “This experience has helped the students grow in so many ways. They have grown professionally in terms of their ability to think logically and adapt to situations where they have little or no equipment or facilities. “Each student has also grown personally, knowing that they have made such a positive difference in so many people’s lives. Above all, they have learnt empathy, patience, humility and gratitude.”

The quality of service is remarkable, the friendliness of the team is second to none and the reassurance given from them with a few choice words has made moving from place to place a joy. “The regular phone calls received from the team at PULSE during placement has been a great source of support. During placement it is evident that the team and their dedicated nurses at PULSE are highly respected by managers and nurses alike, which in itself speaks volumes.

During my employment with PULSE Staffing I have had nothing but positive experiences; from the coordination of shifts to the facilities in which I work, the staff at PULSE go over and above to accommodate my availability.

Our division specialises in:

2013 and have found the team at PULSE to be very approachable and particularly supportive during difficult moments that I have experienced. “They have also been very efficient at obtaining contracts for me when I have heard nurses with other agencies say that they are unable to obtain employment.” Sue, a Registered Nurse with PULSE Staffing also comments on the continuity of care provided by PULSE. “During my employment with PULSE Staffing I have had nothing but positive experiences; from the coordination of shifts to the facilities in which I work, the staff at PULSE go over and above to accommodate my availability. “I have also had continuity in the facilities I work at which enables me to foster good working relationships with the staff and residents at these facilities. “I would encourage nurses looking to join an agency for any level of work to look no further than PULSE Staffing.”

Senior staff from Central and North West Queensland Medicare Local’s Lower Gulf area.

Lower Gulf nursing – variety in the best part of the country Nursing opportunities are unique in the gulf country. The locals are friendly, the community is welcoming and the challenges attract some of the most enthusiastic and keen staff in Australia. The Central and North West Queensland Medicare Local is looking for a Child Health nurse based in Normanton, and according to Area Manager, Adrienne Whelan, the successful candidate can expect every day to be different. “These aren’t your run of the mill jobs,” Adrienne said. “It is a one-of-a-kind part of the country and our staff need to be prepared for some of the most interesting work of their career.” The difference in working in Australia’s Gulf of Carpentaria 10

includes all of the usual attributes in working in rural and remote locations, such as the comfort of living and working in small communities, exposure to a wide range of health experiences and the opportunity to spend time with people from a vast array of backgrounds and experiences. Genuine community wellbeing The lower gulf also provides a chance to work with aboriginal communities in Doomadgee and Mornington Island. “A key strategy in delivering health in these areas has been the establishment of wellbeing teams and local centres to support the social and emotional health of families and individuals by looking at their social circumstances,”

“We aim to work with community members and organisations to develop strength and resilience within the community.” There are two Wellbeing Centres established in Doomadgee and Mornington Island, providing places for all community members to access social, emotional and wellbeing services. The centres promote good health, treat conditions and provide an entry point for other services. The successful candidate for the Child Health Nurse position will visit the schools in both Doomadgee, Mornington Island and eventually in Burketown. The person will work in collaboration with service providers to provide child health checks, immunisations and health education/health promotion in the clinics, schools and community to ensure an integrated child health service.

I am always impressed by the daily examples I see of the bonds between our staff – from mentoring each other, to working proactively together, they have that real focus on what is best for our clients.

Adrienne said.

“Normanton is a terrific community to live and work in,” Adrienne said. “I am always impressed by the daily examples I see of the bonds between our staff – from mentoring each other, to working proactively together, they have that real focus on what is best for our clients.” The Normanton office provides support services and serves as the hub for provision of health services throughout the Lower Gulf area.

Be part of the vision for youth “Every day will be different for our Child Health Nurse. The position works with ages 5 to 18, advising on all aspects of young people’s health,” Adrienne said. “Our communities realise that their young people are their future, and you will play an integral role in that community vision. “We put a lot of emphasis on developing the cultural competencies of our staff, and this experience for cultural development is rarely available in other organisations.”

Adrienne moved to Normanton in 2011, after years of working the public health system in major centres. She oversees 52 staff who work across clinical, health promotion and allied health professions, and who cover and area almost the size of South Australia. Her teams are supported by the organisations’ network of approximately 130 employees, with an estimated 70 people providing front line, primary health care service. “It’s a great work atmosphere out here, and I may be biased, but the fishing is unsurpassed and the sunsets at Karumba are Australia’s best,” Adrienne said.

Employer of choice Central and North West Queensland Medicare Local is a not-for-profit company working to improve health services across a vast stretch of Queensland, incorporating regional centres, mining communities, small towns, pastoral stations, and remote Indigenous communities. Natural and environmental impacts such as floods and drought are part of the challenge of service delivery.

For those looking seriously at positions in rural and remote areas, the experience can be daunting. The Gulf Health team has put a lot of work into making sure new staff are well supported. 11

into this field. Salaries are also a factor in the shortage of candidate supply. While various other sectors across Australia use salary to attract staff, public sector employers are unable to do so. The exception has been for experienced Clinical/ Facility Managers and Directors of Nursing, where salaries have increased marginally across the metropolitan areas and higher in rural areas to attract quality candidates. Another challenge comes from an internal battle for staff within the sector itself. Private healthcare providers are starting to increase the salaries they offer and consequently are attracting top talent away from the public arena where salary is tied to awards. We expect the headhunting of government-employed aged care professionals to continue until wage parity is achieved. According to the 2013 Hays Salary Guide, a Registered Nurse (Division 1) typically earns between $50,00085,000 in Sydney, Canberra and Perth, $56,000-74,000 in Darwin, $60,000-85,000 in Melbourne, $55,00075,000 in Brisbane and $49,000-65,000 in Hobart ¹. to sell the full range of the benefits they offer employees when they are interviewing job candidates. Open and honest communication with existing and potential employees regarding salaries and benefits is also very important. While the local registration process required to bring in overseas medical professionals is difficult to navigate, it is helping alleviate the domestic shortage of skills in the aged care sector. We expect this trend of recruiting from overseas to continue. Widening the parameters of your search is another key point. At Hays Healthcare, we employ a broad range of attraction strategies in order to fill vacancies for our clients. These include local, national and international advertising (we are Australia’s largest corporate recruitment advertiser), internet advertising on our website (hays. com.au) and our international website (hays.com), and searching our candidate database. Our database coordinates with LinkedIn’s network to deliver the most up-to-date and productive connections. Using our Google technology, we search and review profiles from LinkedIn and our own database simultaneously, meaning we’re always in possession of the most recent and accurate member information. In addition, daily network updates tell us when individual’s statuses change to suggest they’re open to new opportunities. Real-time access means we see updates sooner, so we can respond faster with relevant jobs and helpful advice. ¹ All salaries exclude superannuation, bonuses, on-call or penalty rates If you’d like to see our 2013 Hays Salary Guide, visit www.hays.com.au/salary, download The Hays Salary Guide 2013 iPhone app from iTunes or contact your local Hays Healthcare office.

Extending the program ensures that our experienced locums continue to make it possible for health professionals in rural and remote areas of Australia to take leave with the confidence that the organisation and the wider community won’t suffer during their absence.

With one year remaining on the current contract, The Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) has extended the successful Nursing and Allied Health Rural Locum Scheme (NAHRLS) until 30 June 2015. This announcement recognises the vital strategic role played by NAHRLS in meeting the demand within the Australian rural and remote health sector for locum support.

allowed remote health centres using the NAHRLS locum service to save money and administration time, thereby allowing them to focus on providing quality patient care.

We are delighted that the Australian Government has extended the NAHRLS program. This shows that the program works and that the Aspen Medical team has delivered yet another results-driven solution to a healthcare challenge.

Mark Ellis, NAHRLS General Manager said, “Extending the program ensures that our experienced locums continue to make it possible for health professionals in rural and remote areas of Australia to take leave with the confidence that the organisation and the wider community won’t suffer during their absence. The value to the health centre lies in a proven model that allows the facility to continue providing an appropriate level of service without having to compromise on service delivery due to having to absorb third party costs such as transport, accommodation or agency fees and charges.” The NAHRLS program is administered on behalf of DoHA by Aspen Medical, the Australian-owned global healthcare solutions company who specialise in tailor-made solutions in remote, challenging and under-resourced environments. Glenn Keys, Managing Director of Aspen Medical Pty Ltd said, “We are delighted that the Australian Government has extended the NAHRLS program. This shows that the program works and that the Aspen Medical team has delivered yet another results-driven solution to a healthcare challenge.” NAHRLS was established by the Australian Government to support nurses, midwives and allied health professionals in rural and remote Australia to take leave from their work for up to 14 days. The service is focused on supporting health professionals by administering an uncomplicated start-to-finish locum placement service with no fees or charges.

is required to provide the name of the staff member requesting leave and the reason for that leave. The NAHRLS program was formally recognised as a locum support service for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) leave. DoHA since expanded the program to include all forms of leave after recognising difficulty that rural and remote health professionals face in accessing all forms of leave. Locum support was officially granted for sick leave, annual leave, parental leave, bereavement leave and other forms of short term leave. Eligible health services may request up to 14 days leave to cover any form of leave. NAHRLS do not fill vacant positions under any circumstance. NAHRLS was established by the Commonwealth Government to support rural and remote health services by providing locum support at a subsidised cost. The objective of the subsidised program is to help alleviate the pressures of staff shortages due to short term leave requests.
