Editor’s Note \\ WENDY STEYER \\ EDITOR

Welcome to the October Issue of Bowls Matters! We have many interesting items in this issue of the magazine, including a new section, also sections started in the last issue. The new section is from the Constitution Revision Board while we have a continuation of Club History and Poets Corner. So Publicity Officers please send in your History and any poems that may be of interest to members. There is a Club History from Manly Vale and a poem from Oak Flats. The Constitution Revision Board will have a feature included in each magazine. The Sept/Oct feature covers the Annual General Meeting and is a very interesting read. The Coaching Report gives ideas on how to be prepared for next year’s Pennant season. Take note we should already be practicing and playing together as a team. While the Umpires Report covers many different rules under the heading ARE YOU AWARE. The Magazine Committee are thinking of a new concept for Meet a Bowler. We would like the Publicity Officers to send in an article about someone in your club who has had an interesting life outside of bowls as well as with bowls. There will be no formal questions asked, just an informal story to tell. Please attach a photo as well. The State forum and AGM were held on September 16, and the Magazine Committee would like to congratulate all members who joined WBNSW and hope you enjoy your time with us. To all who didn’t re-join the State Body we wish you good luck in your future endeavours. There is also a write up on the AGM and Positions filled. There is a short story of Ballina’s trip to the grade 2 State Pennant Play-offs at Nowra. What a trip, it will make you shake your head in wonder. There are also articles on the Champion of Champion Singles and Pairs as well as the State Pennant finals, while Special days covers stories of ladies celebrating birthdays from 90 to 100 who are still playing bowls. Bowls Matters September – October 2015

President’s Message \\ ROBYN PROCTER \\ STATE PRESIDENT

"To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often" – Winston Churchill Join me in welcoming our new Executive Officer! Melanie Cantwell joined Women’s Bowls NSW Monday 28 September 2015 in the position of Executive Officer, having been the Chief Operations Officer for Dragon Boats NSW Inc. for the past 7 years. With 20 years’ experience leading a sports association, Melanie possesses a variety of skills and has extensive experience in many areas including administration and sport management, communication, governance, finance and strategic management. Melanie’s qualifications include a Degree in Sports Business Administration, Certificate IV in Training Assessment and a Certificate IV in Governance. State Selection Trials for Senior Side Together with State Coach Gary Willis, Chair of Match Pam Hockings and State Side Manager Joan Thomas, I was delighted to be present and involved in the Seniors Selection Camp held at Cabramatta Bowling Club 8-9 August. Sixteen very keen players arrived Saturday morning hoping for selection to represent New South Wales at the National Seniors Tournament to be held in Tasmania during October. The reduced squad of twelve were announced within a few days of the camp and congratulations go to Cheryl Gillard, Jan Rolph, Christine Gordon, Betty Herbertson (skip), Carol White, Jan Newell, Claire Kelly, Di Smith (skip), Keiko Kurohara, Trish Orgill, Carolyn Glen, Gayle Gannon (skip). Last year the Seniors won the Silver Medal at Tweed Heads, this year we’re heading south to Launceston, very keen, in good form and hoping to win Gold. State Pennants - Shoalhaven Region What a treat for everyone - players, spectators and officials - to be back in the Shoalhaven Region! Hosted by Bomaderry Bowling Club along with Berry Bowling Club, Culburra Beach Bowling Club and Nowra Bowling Club, exceptional hospitality and friendly venues for more than 400 players during 17-21 August were the order of the day. Another well managed event thanks to our Match Committee. Congratulations to Grade 1 Winners Cabramatta, Grade 2 Merrylands, Grade 3 St Johns Park and Grade 4 Tura Beach. Well done to all participants on reaching the State playoffs, my sincere thanks to the four participating clubs and their members for the wonderful support. (See photos and details in this issue).

2015 Commonwealth Youth Games Samoa The future of bowls is in good hands! Two wonderful young players - 14 year old Jono Davis from Dubbo and our own 18 year old Ellen Ryan from Cabramatta (and Goulburn) have brought home three gold medals and one silver medal. Jono’s two Gold won in the singles and mixed pairs with Ellen, Ellen winning a Silver in the singles, and of course the Gold with Jono in the mixed pairs. WBNSW congratulates both players and wishes them the very best for the future. Leichhardt’s 90th Birthday and President’s Day What a privilege for me to be invited to attend President Rona’s special day and the 90th Birthday of the legendary Leichhardt Women’s Bowling Club on August 30! Leichhardt WBC was among the five pioneer Women’s Clubs to open in New South Wales together with Torpey Place WBC - now disbanded, Balmain WBC - now disbanded, Rose Bay WBC - now disbanded and the original Western Suburbs Club. The special day included morning tea, bowls, a delightful lunch and a number of excellent toasts and reminiscing of days gone by led by a very proud President Rona Rodwell. The members at Leichhardt have been meticulous in carefully maintaining many valuable records and articles from their esteemed past, including of course beautiful photos and records of the many championship and Pennant wins accumulated over the years. One record I do have trouble in ‘accepting’ is that of “Tup” Honeybone! One of the greatest achievers, Tup won championships at all levels, including the State Singles, the Champion of Champions three times and the Club’s Major Singles an impressive thirty times. She was so skilled, the men asked that she play in their pennant side. I’m wondering if anyone can match Tup’s tally of wins? I had a wonderful day, learnt a great deal and I thank everyone for allowing me to be part of the celebrations.

Champion of Champion Club Singles Another great event - always exciting and full of surprises! Eighty one Club Champions from all over the State arrived at Oak Flats Bowling and Recreation Club on 26 July vying for the title and hoping to take home the silverware. Spectators were provided with many close and intriguing games over three days, the semifinals saw Natasha Scott defeat Angela Tindall 25-20 and Genevieve Delves claim victory over Sharon Farrell 25-14. The final game between Natasha Scott (Raymond Terrace) and newcomer Genevieve Delves (Mona Vale) was a fabulous game, the in-form and experienced Natasha winning the title 25-11. Congratulations Natasha on a wonderful win and my best wishes to Genevieve, I’m sure a great future in bowls awaits you. WBNSW sincerely thanks Oak Flats Chairman Kevin Granger and Board, Women’s President Adele Bartolo, her many helpful members and the Greenkeeper for their generous support. Since claiming the State Champion of Club Champion title, Natasha has continued on a successful path winning the much coveted Australian Champion of Champion Singles, Golden Nugget Singles as well as being named the 2014-15 Aero Bowls Female Bowler of the Year - and I’m sure there is even more success ahead! Well done Natasha, our best wishes at the World Champion of Champions to be held at Helensvale. Champion of Club Champion Pairs During the first week in September, the Illawarra Region turned on a warm welcome for the many Club Champions from all parts of our State. While the players settled in the weather became unpredictable - cold and wet, then on the final day, a warm, sunny day. Jan Agar and Arleen Jeffery from St Johns Park and Shirley de la Harpe and Fay Davison from The Hills all played wonderful bowls, the scores not telling the true story, with Jan and Arleen prevailing on the day. Congratulations Jan and Arleen on a great win! Its always a treat for us to be at Warilla - my thanks to Chairman Steve, President Christine, the many helpful and considerate Warilla members and umpires and staff. We’re looking forward to our return during 2016.

President’s Message \\ ROBYN PROCTER \\ STATE PRESIDENT

Inverell Women’s Bowling Club 60th Birthday A warm welcome, friendly faces and a sunny day, all the ingredients required for a special day. On Tuesday September 22, I was delighted be at Inverell East WBC to meet representatives from Tenterfield WBC (affiliated with Queensland!), Barraba WBC, an isolated club seeking to join the District, Moree WBC, Kootingal WBC, Narrabri WBC, Armidale WBC, Glen Innes WBC, Quirindi WBC and of course members from Inverell East WBC and Inverell RSM. My apologies if I have missed anyone! I was accompanied by fellow Director Nanette Jemmeson a member of Armidale City BC and welcomed by Regional Representative Elaine Radcliffe, Vice President and Chairman of the Registered Club, Anne Barry and Club Secretary Rhonda O’Neill. A thoroughly enjoyable day included a game of bowls, a delicious lunch, speeches and a brief history of the women’s club and how it began delivered by Jan Anderson. I was relieved to see that the countryside had greened a little since I was last in the region, and somewhat sad to leave having had a good look at the beautiful countryside travelling from Armidale to Inverell and back again to fly home to busy Sydney. Best wishes to everyone and many thanks for the renowned country hospitality.

Constitution Report // BERYL WATSON, ROBYN PROCTER // CONSTITUTION@WOMENSBOWLSNSW.ORG

Q&A:

The Annual General Meeting Although most Club/Districts will have held their 2015 Annual General Meetings, this is the first bi-monthly “page” on Constitutional Matters to be written for the magazine and will be a feature in each edition from now on. In this edition the correct procedure for an AGM will be discussed followed by a Question and Answer segment. Using a hypothetical AGM the procedures carried out at a District AGM are discussed: At a correctly convened District AGM there are (7) seven Delegates present plus (7) seven members of the Management Committee. The first position to be elected was the President, as there were two nominations a ballot was held and as President A had the most votes she was elected President. However when the count was requested and declared, President A had 10 votes and President B had 4 votes. This vote was not challenged at the time and President A took up her position as President. When the election of the Match Committee was held there were only two nominations and these officers were elected without the need for a vote. Nominations were then called for from the floor and three members put up their hands and were then elected to fill the vacancies on the Match Committee. The elected five members then decided who would be their Chairman, again no one challenged the elections from the floor. Were these elections held correctly? The answer is NO for the following reasons:

1. Only Club Delegates can vote at a District

Meeting. The Management Committee do not have a vote and the ballot for the President was invalid and should have been challenged as soon as the number of the votes were announced.

As the AGM was not carried out in the correct manner the AGM must be declared null and void and another AGM must be held correctly at the next Delegates Meeting. The current Management Committee remains in office until the new AGM is held. All members of Management Committees and Delegates must make sure that they know the correct procedures for running an AGM. If you have any concerns about the way that your Club/District holds their AGM’s please contact WBNSW to discuss the matter.

Questions and Answers 1. Q: HOW SHOULD NOMINATIONS BE PROCESSED? A: WBNSW recommends that all nominations should be placed in a locked or sealed box by the nominee.

2. Q: WHAT IS A CASUAL VACANCY AND HOW IS IT DEALT WITH? A: A casual vacancy is the way that any position not filled at the AGM or arises during the year as a result of a resignation.

At the end of the AGM the Secretary asks any member who may be interested in one of the vacancies to send in an Expression of Interest in the position giving a two week closing date.

The Management Committee considers all the applications and appoints the most suitable person to fill the position for the rest of the year.

2. Nominations for the Match Committee

should not have been taken from the floor but dealt with after the meeting as Casual Vacancies. (see Questions and answers on how to deal with a Casual Vacancy).

3. The two members who were elected

should have decided on who would be Chairman of the Committee and if they could not reach agreement within (14) fourteen days the Management Committee would appoint the most suitable person as Chairman.

Page 8

After the closing date the Secretary and President (or one other) open the box and list all the nominations in order. This is then displayed on the members’ notice board. If there is more than one nomination for a position a ballot must be held to determine the nominee’s position on the ballot paper.

The same procedure is used to fill any vacancy that occurs during the year.

3. Q: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS A TIED VOTE? A: If a ballot results in a tied vote a second vote should be taken. If this ballot is also tied (24.3 Elections in the Club Constitution) the position becomes null and void and is dealt with as a Casual Vacancy. 4. Q: CAN A MEMBER OF THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE HOLD MORE THAN ONE POSITION ON THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE? A: No. A person can only have one position on the Management Committee. If a position cannot be filled one of the members can be acting in the position while the Committee actively tries to fill the position.

The member who is in the acting position does not wear the badge and only has one vote.

5. Q: CAN A MOTION BE TAKEN FROM THE FLOOR AT THE AGM? A: No. Notices of Motion must be sent to the Secretary within the prescribed time as set out in the Club Constitution so they can be listed on the agenda.

Only matters listed under General Business on the Agenda can be discussed. Items cannot be raised from the floor.

6. Q: CAN A MEMBER OF A DISTRICT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE BE A CLUB DELEGATE? A: No. It is not advisable for a member of the District Management to be a Club Delegate as this would be a conflict of interest. A member of a District Committee can be a Club Delegate as there would not be a conflict of interest. 7. Q: CAN A MEMBER OF A DISTRICT COMMITTEE SPEAK AT A DELEGATES MEETING? A: No. Only the elected Club Delegate speaks for a club or a member of the District Management Committee can speak when answering a question.

Match Report // PAM HOCKINGS, JENNIFER PALMER, JOAN THOMAS // MATCH@WOMENSBOWLSNSW.ORG

2016

It will be here before you know it The 2016 State Carnival Entry form will be forwarded to all Club Secretaries on the same day for next year’s Carnival in the hope that this method of Entry Form distribution will get less complaints than other methods tried over the past years.

It will then be the responsibility of the Club Secretary to copy the form and give it to any players who wish to submit an entry in the Carnival in Port Macquarie from 23rd to 27th May 2016. Advance notice will be given via website/e-news and memo when the entry form is to be expected. As the finalising of the 2016 Calendar takes place we would encourage Clubs/ Districts to consider submitting an expression of interest to host and sponsor one of the State events on offer for 2017/18. Time will be upon us before we know it and to assist with forward planning the Association needs to have venues locked in as early as possible. Hosting a State event enables Clubs to showcase their facilities to bowlers from around the State and also brings a valued economic boost to the local area from players and their supporters.

EVENTS WHICH MAY BE HOSTED: State Carnival, (16 - 20 Greens) Champion of Club Champion Pairs and Singles, (2 -3 Greens) State Pennants, (4 Clubs x 3 greens each if possible) Metro v Country (1 Green) which alternates each year between a City and Country venue. All details of requirements to host/ sponsor any of these events is available on application to the State Office via the Expression of Interest form on the WBNSW Website.

"Hosting a State event enables Clubs to showcase their facilities to bowlers from around the State and also brings a valued economic boost to the local area..."

The Conditions of Play for Association Events, and Pennant Conditions of Play are reviewed towards the end of each year before taking effect at the beginning of the following year and we strongly advise all competitive players, club executive members and umpires to familiarise themselves with these documents when they become available in December 2015. Any significant changes are highlighted in red to indicate a change or addition to the existing document and a quick read through before the start of championships and Pennants in each Club could only be of benefit for all concerned. Once again we strongly recommend that the State Program of Events is used in conjunction with Club and District programming to prevent rescheduling of events further down the track when clashes occur. Clubs and Districts are encouraged to take into consideration the playing personnel in their Club or District and the likelihood that any players may be involved in selected or priority events listed in the State Calendar for which they are entitled to dispensation. Clubs and Districts should take pride in the achievements and representative honours that these players bring to their Clubs and not penalise them, or make them feel that their achievements cause an inconvenience that could have been avoided by more careful planning. Pam Hockings, Match Chairman.

A lot of clubs are already in training mode and have started playing as a team or playing in the position that they will play in during pennants and concentrating on just the two bowls making sure that the first one counts. Now is the time to introduce yourself to your Club Coach and set aside time to fine tune your game and to set in place your goals and planning to be prepared for next year’s 2016 competitions. Your club coaches are there to assist you in improving your game. 1. SET YOUR GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS DOWN ON PAPER. 2. DEFINE THE PARTS OF YOUR GAME THAT NEED TO BE FINE-TUNED. If you are dropping your bowl short or bowling too long – check with your club coach. Are you playing too narrow or too wide? Talk to your coaches! Are you getting your bowl away smoothly or have you developed a wobble in your delivery? Talk to your club coaches! Are your onshots not working as well as you would like, has rolling the jack become a problem? All these issues and more can be addressed by your club coaches and with mentoring and practice you can eliminate them from your game. Taking the time to correct any of these issues will only increase your

confidence and pleasure in your game. Don’t be shy about approaching your coaches. Get to know them as they have a job to do but can only do the job if they are aware that you are in need of assistance. The coaches complete their accreditation so that they are able to support and encourage club members to improve and strive for better results in their game. These people are an asset in your club and are there to help you with key points to help you improve the quality and the enjoyment of your game as well as bring a higher success rate to members who participate in all competitive aspects of lawn bowls. Coaches are able to help you develop bowling skills to a level that suits your own level of ability and competitiveness. Coaches want to be able to help you develop your skills in a happy and relaxed environment. The Australian and State players have access to coaches so why shouldn’t you make use of the people available to you. IF ITS NOT WORKING THEN CHANGE IT! Your club coach can introduce you to a P.S.R ie: a PRE SHOT ROUTINE that will help you have a more consistent and confident approach to every bowl you deliver. If your club doesn’t have a coach, check out another bowling club in your area to see if they are fortunate enough to have a club coach. If there doesn’t happen to be a coach available in your area WBNSW Coaching Panel would be happy to assist you and your club in this matter. The final event in the State Calendar will be the State Championships that will be held in Tuncurry in October. Congratulations to all Regional Winners who will be at Tuncurry Bowling Club to play and wishing you all good bowling and good preparation for the 2016 year.

Mistakes to Avoid on Club Websites In this day and age often the first contact a potential new member will have with your club is via your club website. It is important to ensure that this website is set out well and up to date in order to help the site visitor find all the information they are looking for. Current club members will also regularly use the website if they can quickly and easily access the information they need. When it comes to websites there are many mistakes that are very easy to make. Some of these mistakes include:

NOT PLANNING THE WEBSITE A common issue for club websites is that the content and layout is unplanned. This results in a ‘mishmash’ of information that is not easy for visitors to navigate. Often old information is mixed in with current information and can cause visitors to not bother to read anything at all. Before your club gets its website up and going or if you are not happy with the way your current website is performing, it is a great idea to sit down and think about what you would like it to look like and how you would like it to be laid out. Questions to help get you started could be; What do you want to tell your clubs different audiences about your club? Do you need an about page where they can learn about your club? A history page? A registration or contact page? A committee page or a page about the different teams at your club? Once you have decided on the pages you will need you can then plan out what you would like it to look like. Where would you like your club banner and logo to sit on your home page?

RARELY UPDATING THE CLUB WEBSITE This is very common among sports clubs due to a lack of time and volunteer resources. Volunteer time is a precious resource for clubs so often the most efficient way to update the club website is to find a member who has this skill set and ask them to volunteer their time. This may be a technically minded member of your club that may want to be more involved and is a job that may take five minutes for someone who is confident with websites. By updating the club website it ensures it doesn’t stay stagnant. This helps to encourage visitors to continue to come to the website to see what is new and exciting at the club. Clubs can also encourage members to help keep the club website up to date by sending photos, scores or content to the club’s ‘webmaster’. A webmaster is simply the volunteer who maintains the club’s website. This gives your club a constant stream of content you can use to put on the website to help keep it up to date.

Social Media SOCIAL MEDIA NOT LINKED TO THE CLUB WEBSITE Whether your club is on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or other social media sites it is important to ensure all social media used by your club has a visible presence on your webpage and links available for visitors to click. This allows visitors to connect with your club on more platforms and allows greater communication as well as supporting the growth of a sense of belonging to your club. Club websites are becoming more important when looking at achieving club objectives. Ensuring club websites are easy to navigate and up to date helps the website to work for your club and takes pressure of club administrators in the long run.

June Harper has been a member of Forster since February 1989. In June this year she was awarded Life Membership and in her words was 'thrilled to her back teeth'.

In August 2015 Forestville awarded Life Membership to Sheila Flaherty.

Enid Hall was presented with her Life Member’s badge by President Gillian Portener on the occasion of the clubs 60th anniversary on June 26, 2015.

Over the years June has served her club as - Publicity Officer, Chairman of Match, Committee Member, Vice President, President of Forster and President of the Past Presidents Assoc. With other Committee Members she worked for 13 years providing sandwiches for the Men’s Pennant Teams. Currently June holds the position of Vice President of the Past Presidents Assoc. June has won many bowls titles over the years. Although she does not bowl much these days she is always there to support the Ladies Club. Forster ladies applaud you on your Life Membership and thank you for all your work.

Sheila joined the club in February 2000 and has served on Committee for 15 years. Sheila has held the positions of President, Vice President, Management Committee and District Delegate. Her current position is Vice President. Sheila is a tireless worker, one duty in particular that she shines at and enjoys is organising the popular Friday twilight bowls evenings. Sheila arranges everything - team cards, raffles, barbeques etc. She has handled this huge commitment for many years. Another task which Sheila takes care of is beautifully wrapping the weekly raffle prizes and at the end of each year she arranges the awards for Championship winners. In 2012 Sheila was awarded the State Merit Pin. Sheila has won every Major Club Championship with the exception of the Major Singles. Her achievements have included winning the Pairs 2008, 2010, Triples 2009, 2012 and the Fours 2003, 2007, 2012. Also adding the Minor Singles in 2004.

Enid joined Berry Bowling club in 1992 and held the position of Vice-President for a number of years before being elected President in 2003, a position she held for three years. Enid has won many club championships including the major singles, major pairs (twice), major triples (three times) and major fours (five times). Enid has also represented the club in pennants in grades 2, 3 and 4 and was a member of the grade 4 winning pennants side in 2009. Last season Enid took on the task of nurturing new players into grade 4 pennants, playing third at the beginning of the season then moving to skip and bringing her ‘new girls’ in at a very respectable 4th place. As a much respected ‘elder’ of the club her willingness to impart her knowledge to new/younger players is appreciated by all the ladies at BWBC. Congratulations from all the ladies at Berry.

Sheila skipped one of the victorious Grade 4 Pennant sides in 2013 and she was a member of the team which won the U/5 District competition in 2002. Congratulations Sheila. PHOTO: President Valerie Mahn (left) presenting Sheila Flaherty (right)

The Women’s Bowling Club was affiliated on August 24, 1994, after a meeting held at the Manly Vale Bowling Club by Enid Walsh from the Manly Warringah District Committee. The foundation members numbered 14, and Pam Lees was appointed foundation President. Manly Vale has played pennants continually for the past twenty years, winning four pennant flags (1997-4, 2001-3, 2005-2 and 2008-2) over that time and making the State play-offs at least twice. Manly Vale won the District Shield in 2009 after being runners up in 2003.

JUDY BAILEY

STOCKTON

Judy Bailey is a Past President and current Vice President. She has also served on the Match Committee and has been Head of Match. Judy has participated in many successful Pennant games and is still a regular player.

Manly Vale is fortunate to have had a compatible playing group who all help with duties around the club. Many thanks go to President Janet Patison and Secretary Sue McMaster for their long service. Manly Vale Ladies have also had 4 members on the District Committee for many years as Treasurer and part of the Match, Selection and Social Committees. Sadly it is with great regret that Manly Vale closed at the end of May 2015. Some have gone to other clubs. During the life of the club, great times were had and many friendships made. Thank you.

Over the years Judy has always assisted with all social events, especially the organising of raffles and tombolas. PHOTO: Stockton Women’s Bowling Club President Joan Calman awarding life membership to Judy Bailey.

Jack Attack The majority of NSW bowling clubs that signed up to be host clubs for the national participation product Jack Attack, wrapped up their first season and yielded positive results. Jack Attack was a useful medium to be used in order for host clubs to see new faces walk through their doors and step out onto their greens. Avalon Beach Bowling Club is a favoured venue for the Avalon locals, who not only use the club for bowling purposes, but also functions. However, the issue of not being able to replace resigning members was still an issue that needed to be considered. Avalon found that there was no shortage of finding people who did not mind barefoot bowling – some of which showed great potential – but there was the issue of overcoming perceived ideas forming resistance. Avalon Beach found the first layer of resistance broken down into three points: it takes too long, it’s a bit too daggy and it’s too formal.

“We launched Jack Attack, but we think with an important extra rule. The triples teams would be formed with two full member bowlers combined with a non-bowler. We did this, because most non-bowlers thought the sole objective was to roll the bowl to the kitty. By having a knowledgeable bowler next to the novice, there was the opportunity to explain to the newcomer, the more intricate tactics and strategies to the game. This turned out to be key. The newcomer learnt how much more there was to the game of bowls – the game revealed itself as much more intriguing than simply rolling to a jack.”

Avalon Beach Bowling Club Bowls Secretary, Dave Humphries stated, “after watching the excitement of the Australian Premier League on Fox Sports, and the ingenious marketing idea from Bowls Australia, to hitch Jack Attack to it, we decided Jack Attack could be the answer. Chris Wallace from Bowls Australia was of tremendous help and Bowls Australia provides support at no charge. The very nature of the format goes straight to the heart of the simple problems above. Jack attack is fast (one hour), there’s no uniform, it’s informal and it’s fun.”

Avalon Beach launched their Jack Attack program in January simultaneously with their 5pm Friday Happy Hour with a local rock band playing by the green, and found it greatly contributed to the fun atmosphere. “Men and women were on the greens, getting exposed to the game and having a great time, all in one hour. The layer one problems of recruitment were simply overcome. Jack Attack was a success”, stated Dave Humphries, who also identified the second layer of resistance was the cost of becoming a member. The Club Committee came to the realisation that everyone needed to get involved and most of their members rose to the occasion by lending uniforms and bowls sets to ease the cost of becoming a bowls member.

Page 22

Bowls Matters September – October 2015

Avalon Beach found that by motivating existing membership, and combining it with a great marketing tool like Jack Attack, they were able to recruit 5 new members in their six week session, one of which has already been promoted to their top grade pennant team in his first season. After a successful first campaign, Avalon Beach have compiled a list of tips for Jack Attack:

After running their Jack Attack program, Club Mount Lewis found:

•• Get your club behind you – recruitment is everybody’s responsibility. •• Run the event with your bowlers, so they can explain the tactics and strategies beyond the dead draw. •• Be open, have a big smile on your face, mistakes here don’t matter. •• Don’t be hyper-competitive. You are there to recruit and teach – not win. •• Try and run it with happy hour – a few tipples makes for more fun. •• Have music playing – it’s unbelievable how much this contributes to the atmosphere. •• It’s a unisex event. •• Get Bowls Australia to help – their assistance is for free and they are eager to help! •• Have fun – that’s why we play bowls! •• Afterwards, don’t be pushy – show them the fun, and outside of Jack Attack, welcome people to have a roll.

•• 30% of entrants had never put a bowl down before.

Similarly, Club Mount Lewis found positive impacts of running the Jack Attack program at their club. Due to the demographics of its location, Club Mount Lewis always struggled to make their barefoot bowls program successful, however they found that 2014 – 2015 was their best year yet! “The Club knew that to attract new players that Jack Attack had to be fun and light hearted and with teams allowed to use substitute and power plays... The Club also initiated a Thursday evening meal deal to coincide with Jack Attack to showcase the bistro and other areas of the club” stated David Ellis, Bowls Coordinator of Club Mount Lewis. “Whilst the club did not sign up any new bowling members at that time, all those who were not members have signed up as social members to take advantage of our discounts and benefits and be able to be kept informed about upcoming Jack Attack events and a few of them have since approached the club to be more formally coached with an interest to start playing socially.” www.womensbowlsnsw.org

•• 58 people signed up with consistently 36 people playing each week. •• Individuals were placed into teams as well as teams of 3 nominating to participate. •• The Club charged each person $5 per week to play in a 6 week competition (a total of $30.00 for the 6 weeks). •• The competition was run under a point score system – with points for attendance, winning a set and winning a match. •• All entry fees were reimbursed as prize money with weekly prizes of Club money given to a winning and losing team each week. •• At the conclusion of the 6 weeks, the top 5 point scoring individuals were given prize money with the top 3 also receiving a small trophy. •• Each week the Bowls Coordinator would run through the rules and supply bowls to all those who needed them and music played across the green(s) in use.

Club Mount Lewis also had 3 Open Sundays during the winter months to entice people to get on the green and will have Jack Attack information leaflets handed out advising of the 20152016 spring/summer programs. This spring/summer, will see the Club embark on 3 six week competitions during the daylight savings period, including a Corporate Jack Attack competition. “It is anticipated that the club will again be able to attract a good percentage of participants who have never played the game before, and also believe we will be able to entice a few more to take on some more coaching to be able to play the game either at a social level or competition level.” Page 23

// General News Club Mount Lewis have also identified the importance of running varied promotions in order to entice participants to stay in the club and utilise the other areas of their newly refurbished and expanded club house. A considerable amount of effort and commitment was required by South Grafton Bowling Club and its members to effectively run their 6 week Jack Attack program, which started February 4, 2015. A total of 10 teams participated in the event (with 8 returning for an extra week.) South Grafton Bowling Club found that extra income was generated on the evenings Jack Attack was held through green fees, drinks and raffle sales. Although no new members have been signed at this stage, some participants did express interest in social club novelty bowls events. South Grafton BC feel as though it is a little too early to determine the full and long term impact Jack Attack may have on their club. Grandviews Bowling Club located at Peakhurst in Sydney’s St. George area, were one of the clubs in Sydney to quickly embrace the ‘Jack Attack’ concept and implement a program very quickly, which was a corporate/business version inviting local businesses to put in a side. “After watching the initial promotion of Jack Attack during the Foxtel coverage of the Australian Premier League event, we were very excited about the possibilities,” Bowls Manager Cameron Curtis said. “Our main aim was to target non-members or people that didn’t already play bowls at the club,” Curtis explained, “as the social bowls component at Grandviews is already very strong. We wanted to start tapping into a new market so to speak.” “The men’s bowls committee had started a new raffle and promotion on Thursday nights in the proceeding months called, ‘Turn the Joker’. We decided to run Jack Attack on Thursday nights in order to keep promoting that event and get new people in the club too,” Curtis added. Grandviews found that even after the conclusion of their Jack Attack program, a large number of participants returned to the club every Thursday for dinner, drinks and the ‘Turn to the Joker’ promotion.

“Entry fee for the seven-week tournament was $330 per side payable before the event begun by the business. This basically worked out at $15pp each week. That fee covered green fees, finger food, weekly prizes, overall tournament prizes plus presentation BBQ. All the participants were thrilled with the value for money and really thought it was quite cheap!” said Curtis. Bowls Manager Cameron Curtis also went onto say, “The flexibility of Jack Attack is the key. No one is locked in every week and as long as each team has three players each round, then all goes smoothly. Players can be subbed in or out if people turn up late or have to go early the flexibility is there.” Grandviews also adopted the strategy of pairing up an experienced bowler with each team in order to teach them tactics and playing the right hand or shot. Curtis concluded “Grandviews would like to acknowledge and thank, Bowls Australia Development Officer, Chris Wallace, for his help and support in getting Jack Attack off the ground at Grandviews. His knowledge and initial guidance was fantastic, so I recommend other clubs be pro-active and stay in regular contact with their local Development Officer.” Women’s Bowls NSW wish to thank Avalon Beach Bowling Club, Club Mount Lewis, South Grafton Bowling Club and Grandviews Bowling Club for their valued feedback on their Jack Attack Programs and their accompanying photographs.

For further information on Jack Attack please visit

jackattack.com.au

Grandviews stated that they had targeted club sponsors first and also many of the local businesses and companies in the area. Their six week program started mid-February on Thursdays at 6pm, with a coaching night a week before to familiarise all non-bowlers with the basics. “The businesses were thrilled with the concept and all have put their entry in for the next one, Season 2, starting mid-October. Because Grandviews does not have lights at present, they have to maximise the daylight saving period.”

CHAMPION OF CLUB CHAMPIONS SINGLES The State Champion of Club Champions Singles was once again held at and sponsored by Oak Flats Bowling and Recreation Club. The event took place over four days – July 27-30. With the same format as last year, this being 2 games per day with the Quarter Final being played on Wednesday July 29, and the Semi Final and Final on Thursday 30, morning and afternoon. 81 Club Champions took part in the event, with players coming from all over NSW. On Monday morning Oak Flats ladies President Adele Bartolo welcomed players and Officials and handed proceeding over to Jennifer Palmer (Member of State Match Committee). A SHORT HISTORY OF THE EVENT IS: “The State Champion of Club Champions commenced in the 1931-32 season and was won by Mrs S. Page of Sydney Ladies Club. A Perpetual Trophy for this event was presented in 1984 by Hunt and Hunt, the Association solicitors in memory of Mr Bob Hunt the first solicitor to the Association, and consists of two rose bowls, The larger Silver one is kept in the trophy cabinet at Headquarters and has the winners name engraved each year. The crystal bowl is retained by the winner. The first recipient of the Trophy was Mrs C. Philp (North Haven)”. The weather was beautiful throughout the week and a high standard of bowls was played during the tournament with some very close games being played, much to the delight of the many spectators and officials watching. WOMEN’S BOWLS NSW 2015

Champion of Club Champion Pairs During the first week of September, Club Pairs Champions from all over the State congregated at Warilla Bowling Club in the Illawarra to contest the title of Champion of Club Champion Pairs. There was beautiful spring sunshine for most of the week and there were many hard fought, but always friendly games. The competing ladies were all in good spirits and there were lots of new friendships formed and fun.

WINNERS: J. Agar, A. Jeffery (St Johns Park)

Thursday morning dawned bright and sunny for the quarter finals. The teams through to the quarter finals were, Jan Agar and Arleene Jeffery, St John’s Park (22), versus Masako Sato and Virginia Longfellow, Harbord (18); Jodie Marshall and Karen Marshall, Goulburn Railway (8) versus Lauren Williams and Tracy Osborne, Ettalong (27); Carol White and Lynne Thompson, Port City (8) versus Kathryn Clerke and Valentine Fullick, Charlestown (17) and Shirley de la Harpe and Faye Davison, The Hills (19) versus Kay Collison and Prue Harrington, Scone RSL (9). However, when the semi- finalists returned to the green after lunch, the weather had made a turn for the worse. The sun had gone into hibernation, big black clouds had rolled in and a blustery wind had blown up. The ladies were all very stoic and battled on regardless and the last game finished just as the rain started. The results of the semi-finals were, St John’s Park (22) Ettalong (8) and The Hills (20) Charlestown (10). The weather deteriorated during the night with howling winds and lashing rain which did not bode well for finals day. But, the weather gods smiled and Friday morning was back to being a beautiful sunny, calm day.

RUNNERS UP: S. de la Harpe, F. Davison (The Hills)

The four finalists, Jan Agar and Arleen Jeffery, St John’s Park and Shirley de la Harpe and Faye Davison, The Hills had a very tough game. Jan and Shirley both played a wonderful lead game and their yellow (Jan) and orange (Shirley) bowls were almost always within close proximity to the jack. Faye and Arleen too had excellent games putting down some terrific bowls, but with all due to respect to Jan and Arleen, it simply was not Faye and Shirley’s day. The final score, St Johns Park (20) The Hills (9) totally belied the game which had been played in a lovely friendly spirit. After presenting the prizes, President Robyn went on to present Warilla’s Chairman Steve with a gift on behalf of Women’s Bowls NSW. She then summed up the week by thanking Ladies President Christine and all her ladies for their extremely hard work, helpfulness and good humour throughout a very long week; the greenkeeper and his team and all the umpires. She went on to say that “coming to Warilla is like home from home”. Finally, President Robyn congratulated the finalists again, all the competitors from the week and Pam and Jenny of the State Match Committee for a great job.

ASHFIELD UNDER 5’S SINGLES Over 20 clubs were represented at the recent 2015 Ashfield Under 5 Singles held over the last weekend of July this year. The weather was near perfect, the greens were at their peak and the players stepped up and put on some great matches. This was the 6th year that Ashfield has hosted the Under 5s singles and was the first club to host an Under 5s initiative in the City West District. Although the players have only been playing the game for five years or less, the standard of the games has always been very high and it has been rewarding to see many of these bowlers go on to win championships and be recognised with selection. The final of this year’s event was between Warilla bowler Kate Davis and Castle Hill bowler Lynne Graham. City West District Singles Champion, Maelene Reynolds marked the final game which was won by Lynne. The game went shot for shot until the 8th end when Lynne won 5 ends in a row taking a lead of 9 shots that Kate was unable to claw back. Final score 17-5.

CONDONG MARGARET DOBIE 94TH BIRTHDAY Condong celebrated the 94th Birthday of Margaret Dobie on July 11 this year. Following on from her normal weekly game, a light lunch and huge cake was enjoyed by Margaret and fellow bowlers. President Jenny Glasby and members are very proud of this amazing lady and her resilience, as she continues to play on all club days and is still a formidable opponent on the greens. Happy 94th Birthday, Margaret and many more to come. Page 32

BATEAU BAY

50TH BIRTHDAY Bateau Bay were blessed with warm, sunny weather to celebrate their 50th Birthday in June with 123 members and guests in attendance. Official guests consisted of President Sue Ryan, WBNSW Director Sue O’Keefe - a lovely friendly lady; Region 6 Representative Robyn Cosgrove; Central Coast DWBA President Pat Frewin, Secretary Di Elsom and Patron Beryl Brown. Representatives from the Bateau Bay Men’s Bowling Club, President Barry Beavis, Secretary Paul Hannagan, the very popular greenkeeper of 26 years, Darren Vetter and Sports Club Representative Willie Clarke were also in attendance. The ceremonies began with members forming a guard of honour when the guests arrived, followed by a most enjoyable morning tea, especially prepared by Gillian Polovineo and her Social Group. Everyone was keen to then surround a number 50 on the green, made up with many coloured bowls. A ‘spider’ was organised in aid of Bowl for Others. Lunch followed the bowls in the beautifully decorated Palms Room. A special gift awaited everyone attending of a pen with pull out calendar and inscription “Bateau Bay WBC in friendship 1965 – 2015”. President Sue welcomed the presence of those treasured bowlers who are no longer able to play, then awarded Special Merit badges to Secretary Judy Alan and Welfare Officer Jeanette Rogers. Long serving member Val Allan was also acknowledged for her untiring 25 years as an umpire and generously giving of her time to coach.

BERRY

60TH BIRTHDAY Friday June 26, saw Berry Women’s Bowling Club celebrate their 60th anniversary. The day had a FUN theme and from start to finish the members and their guests were treated to a memorable day, both on and off the green. The day commenced with a morning tea for the 70 or so in attendance. President Gillian Portener welcomed members and their guests and declared the fun day open. No serious bowls were played, lots of novelty ends with non bowlers trolling the greens for name and shame to come later. Sledging was encouraged and there was much laughter and fun had by all. Lunch consisted of a delicious array of finger food, sweet delights and ice creams. Party games, whistles, streamers and poppers all contributed everyone having a ball. Those that were noted for misdemeanors were called up, shamed and made to do the chicken dance. In keeping with the informal format there were few speeches. District President Dorothy Sullivan congratulated the club on its 60th year and a beautiful commemorative cake was cut and packaged for all the ladies to take home. The club took the opportunity to make Enid Hall a Life Member for her contribution to the club during her 23 year membership.

The cake cutting ceremony followed with Director Sue, District President Pat and President Sue doing the honours. The men’s club President Barry then spoke about the ladies’ successes on and off the green during the past half century and generously presented the Ladies Club with a glass plaque in commemoration. Everyone had a very enjoyable day which will be remembered for a long time.

BRIBBAREE

BEECROFT

50TH BIRTHDAY

On June 23, 2015, the Beecroft Women’s Bowling Club celebrated June Hunter’s 90th Birthday with a surprise luncheon, attended by former and current members.

Bribbaree celebrated their 50th Birthday and Judy Baker’s President’s Day on August 15, with representatives from all the South Western District clubs attending. President Judy welcomed everyone for attending, especially Region 10 Representative, Joan Stair, S.W. President Rosemary Walters and ex-Bribbaree bowlers who all have returned to the day. A delightful morning tea was enjoyed before guests took to the green for a spider, then a game of triples. After bowls everyone proceeded to the club house for a very enjoyable lunch.

June is one of our longest serving members having joined the Club in 1978. In that time she has held various positions in the Club the most notable being a 3 year term as President and 22 years as Secretary, June is also a Life Member of the Beecroft Club. Though she no longer bowls because of poor eyesight, she still attends each week and is a source of great encouragement and information to all Bowlers. Happy Birthday June.

Carol Turner gave a brief history of the club, starting with a meeting of three ladies from Quandialla and eight from Bribbaree on November, 12, 1964. It was a struggle for a few years with their first cutlery set stolen before it was even out of the box, so the next one was engraved. Then in 1976 the club house was burnt down, so they had to start all over again. Bribbaree’s longest serving President and life member Mrs. Jean Spackman was present to share the day with Judy. A big thank you to the small band of dedicated members who made the day so happy and enjoyable. After cutting of the cake and many photos Judy thanked everyone for attending and wished all a safe trip home.

President Lorraine Park celebrated President and Officers’ Day on Thursday June 25, at Greenlees Park. After a lovely morning tea, the bowlers played for a “Spider”, with the proceeds in aid of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. A game was then played till 12.30pm, with much fun and laughter. Players from several clubs attended, also men bowlers from Ashfield, Burwood Diggers and Greenlees Park – everyone had an enjoyable day. Speeches and toasts were made during lunch and the chocolate cake was cut by President Lorraine, Vice-President Margaret Truesdale, and Margaret Simpson from Carlingford. President Lorraine thanked her Committee for their help and support in making the day so enjoyable and thanked all for attending as this would be her first and last President’s Day. Lorraine has moved to Umina and will eventually join Ettalong Bowling Club. Everyone was wished a safe journey home.

DUBBO CITY Edna McKnight reached the grand age of 100 on May 31 this year. Edna joined Dubbo City Women’s Bowling Club on February 19, 1993 the same day as her niece. Edna was a competitive tennis player before she decided to try her hand at bowls. A luncheon in her honour was celebrated by Edna and her many bowling friends at the Castlereagh Hotel on June 5. She was elated when President Judy O’Connor presented her with both a Certificate and letter from Women’s Bowls NSW. She also received flowers and chocolates. A beautiful cake made and decorated by member Nan Hazelton was cut by Edna. Edna does not bowl a lot these days but is looking forward to participating in the Mid West District Veteran’s Day in September.

Shirley (who is about to turn 90 years young) joined Woy Woy in September 1982 and has been a regular player on the greens right up until the last day of her membership even though at times it was difficult. Lately she could be heard saying to herself, “come on legs get moving”.

GLEN INNES FOSTERING JUNIOR BOWLER The Glen Innes Bowling Club with both the Women's and Men’s Sections are to be congratulated for what they have done to encourage, help and accommodate a Junior Girl bowler to be part of their club and start building for the future. (l-r): Edgeworth President Robyn Hogarth presenting the Rose Bowl to Cardiff President Brenda Ott.

CARDIFF ROSE BOWL Twenty of the Cardiff ladies went to Edgeworth bowling club to play for the Rose Bowl, which they won. This will be an annual event playing alternate years at Cardiff and at Edgeworth. The weather was very kind, remained sunny after such heavy rain through the night. The Cardiff ladies were most appreciative of the good company and delicious food the Edgeworth ladies provided and very much look forward to playing bowls against them next year.

An Adventurous trip to the State Pennant Play offs Ballina’s No2 Pennant team and supporters arrived at Ballina airport on August 16, at 7.30am to discover their 9am flight to Sydney had been cancelled. They were told the only way to reach Sydney that day was a flight to Melbourne and then on to Sydney. So this they did and had a three hour wait in Melbourne for the Sydney flight. They had booked Jervis Bay Coaches to take them from Sydney to Nowra and had to ring the company to confirm they would wait for them to arrive. The coach driver waited four hours for them to arrive and another three hours to get to Nowra. They arrived in Nowra at 9.30 that evening, tired but safe and had arrived on time. Speaking to some of the supporters at Nowra on Tuesday the ladies were saying they had arranged an early flight from Ballina so they could have a roll up Sunday afternoon to see what the greens were like. Needless to say NO ROLL UP. The ladies assured me they were having a wonderful time and enjoying the experience. Wendy Steyer (Editor)

Page 36

The young girl is 13 year old Brittany Camp who started playing bowls when she and her father Dave decided to take up playing mixed social bowls on Sunday mornings 18 months ago. Following this, Brittany was going to join the Men’s Club and paid her fees to the Men’s Club to become a full Junior Member. The Ladies play on Wednesday’s and have allowed her to nominate in Social bowls, Championships – Singles, Pairs, Triples and Mixed Fours. They have by arrangements and changing days to accommodate her and her school commitments so she can play in these events.

She was allowed to compete in the Glen Innes Rose Bowl Annual Tournament. The club has also lent her new small size bowls to play with as long as she needs them before she gets her own set. The whole Women's club is really behind Brittany with them giving her a $200.00 donation and then running a fund raising raffle which raised a further $200.00 to help cover some of her and her families cost’s for the trip to Warilla Bowling Club to represent Zone 3 and the Glen Innes Bowling Club at the NSW State Junior Championships. Well done to Glen Innes for their great effort and achievements. John Rodis.

(l-r) Life Member UBWBC Nancy Griffith, President CCDWBA Pat Frewin, President UBWBC Sue Craske, Life Member UBWBC Elaine Mannin.

UMINA PRESIDENT FAREWELL Umina Beach said farewell to club President Sue Craske on Tuesday, June 30. Sue was welcomed by a town crier and the Ladies Committee before entering the club with about 120 members forming a guard of honour. The group enjoyed morning tea before taking part in a game of bowls with the town crier continuing throughout the day announcing events.

Guests on the day included representatives from all over the Central Coast women’s bowls community such as Presidents, Vice Presidents and Secretaries. The event was also attended by the President of Umina Men’s Bowling Club and the CEO of Merrylands RSL. Pat Fewin from the Central Coast District Women’s Bowling Association attended the event and awarded Pat Neal, Carol Hawkesworth, Judy Pilgrim and Glenda Beecham with friendship pins.

UMINA YVONNE WINS MAJOR SINGLES Yvonne Gordon won the Umina Women’s Major Singles bowls championship. The morning of Friday, May 8, started in Yvonne Gordon’s favour with the green running fast, just as she liked it.

LAKE CARGELLIGO TOUGH COUNTRY DUCKS The Lake Cargelligo team of Kerry Turner, Narelle Hayward, Jean Hall and Del Hattwell braved arctic and wet weather conditions to play their two games at West Wyalong in the fours championship playoffs at West Wyalong in July. On the first morning they played Grenfell and with 23 ml of rain all day during the match and a top temperature of 9 degrees, conditions were far from ideal. Lake Cargelligo scored a good win against Grenfell. On the second day they played the defending champions Wagga Rules club team. Once again it rained all match and the temperature reached a maximum of 4 degrees so players were very cold and wet by the end of play. Lake Cargelligo started well in the match and led most of the game but the Rules club team finished strongly to win the game by 3 shots. Skip Kerry Turner explained she has played more bowls in the rain than any of her other sports. As there was no thunder or lightening and the green was playable then the matches could not be called off. State representative Joan Stair was in attendance to offer support to all players. The Lake team enjoyed a heart-warming medicinal drink after playing both games in the cold and wet conditions. Good luck to the Wagga Rules club team who now go on to compete at NSW state level.

When her opponent Carol Boyd did touch the jack, luck was not on her side as it went on several occasions to Yvonne’s bowl. Carol never gave up, even to the final rounds, and for the last four ends stopped Yvonne from getting her last shot. It has been 10 years since Yvonne last won the Singles, so let's hope it’s not another 10 years until her next win. Y. Gordon

Lynda thanked all present for supporting the Charity Day in aid of Breast Cancer. The Shield was won by Jill Young (Denistone), Kerry Byrne (Concord R.S.L.), Sandra Keegan (Matraville R.S.L.) and Margaret Simpson (Carlingford), with 14 ends. A pink bowl was also handed to the winners to be displayed with the trophy at their respective clubs from time to time. The runners-up were Maureen Randell, Mary Bridges, Julie Rothery and Val Smith (Merrylands), with 13 ends. Raffle prizes of bottles of wine, a sandwich maker, a camera and many others were donated by the Osborne Family and their friends, also wine from Billie Klein. $650 was the total amount raised. Another Remembrance Day will be held next year with proceeds again going to Breast Cancer. Over the years many regular supporters have attended in support of a good cause. As a way of giving something back to the sport she loves, NTC squad member Sarah Boddington invited a novice player from each of the three smallest clubs in her District to join her in a local Open Fours tournament. Bulahdelah, Pacific Palms and Lansdowne Women’s Bowling Clubs were each asked to nominate a worthy player with the criteria being they must be new to the game, be a keen club member willing to learn and improve their game. Subsequently, Kylie Tosh, Pam Coleman and Ann Clark joined the twenty three year old on the greens of Forster Bowling Club in their annual Hibiscus Fours event on August 17. Boddington, a dual State Singles Champion and seventy two game representative for NSW, said she wanted to give the bowlers something that she had never experienced when she was learning the game; an opportunity to play alongside an accomplished and well-known player. “When I started playing, it was at a small club with no known players and I certainly never was given the opportunity to play with any of the top players from other clubs in our District,” she said. “That only came later when I was forced to join a larger club as the only way to improve my game and gain quality experience. “So I decided that one of the best ways I can give something back was to give some new players from the smaller clubs in our District the opportunity I never had when I was a learner bowler.” Taylor Bowls, who have supported Boddington right through her career, generously supplied playing shirts for the foursome which she said made her three teammates ‘really feel like a team’. “I’m sure having all of us dressed the same helped with the girls’ nerves as they all put in pretty solid performances,” Boddington said. “But most importantly, they all enjoyed the experience and went away feeling what a great game lawn bowls really is.” “That was the true point of the exercise,” she said. CITY WEST DISTRICT – PRESIDENT’S DAY After weeks of freezing weather, the sun shone warmly upon City West District President’s Day, held at Alexandria/Erskineville on Tuesday July 21. Pam Mercer celebrated the day with her special friend, Delsie Fardell (WBNSW Social Committee), members of the District Committee and representatives from the six clubs in the District. Pam has been at the helm whilst the City West District implemented play arrangements to be more inclusive of working women. Pennant games are played on Tuesdays and Saturdays and this year the State Pairs, Triples and Open Fours were played on the weekend, playing two games per day. The beautiful cake was made by Maureen Threlfo from Lidcombe WBC. City West District may be small in number, but big in heart. Congratulations Pam on your successful presidency. PHOTO: (l-r) R.
