Cyber Security Alert – Spoofing & Phishing Email impersonation, known as spoofing or phishing, is where the sender is acting as if the email is coming from someone it is not. It could be to send spam, install viruses onto the receiver’s system, or worse, gain access to financial systems...

Have you ever received an email from a bank claiming to need you to submit personal details, yet you don’t actually have an account with that bank? If so, you have then received a phishing email. Another kind of impersonation is where your email address is used in a subtly changed format, e.g. john.smith@gmail.com changed to john_smith@gmail.com – an underscore instead of a dot. RECOMMENDATIONS Here are a few recommendations you should seriously consider if you haven’t already implemented them: • Identity theft is big business. You may get an email from a friend or superior asking you to transfer money, or you may be the one impersonated and sending emails to clients with fake invoices. To avoid this, ask your IT provider to turn on Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM), which are email authentication methods. This way you preserve your reputation and your business. • Apply ALL the latest patches and updates to your operating system software. By itself this won’t prevent all attacks, but it will make it that much more difficult for hackers to take control of your PCs. • Implement and insist on strong passwords. These are the locks and bolts that secure your operation. Make sure they’re strong enough. • Have an enforceable frequent (30 days maximum) password change policy. • Anyone who isn’t a regular user should be restricted to only those areas they need to use. Your IT provider can arrange special accounts for casual users.

CYBER INSURANCE Even with all the latest protection and diligent procedures, you may still find yourself a victim of cyber-crime. A cyber-attack on your business could end up costing you hundreds of thousands of dollars. Cyber-crime is not an IT issue – it is a real risk to the viability of your business. A cyber insurance policy will help cover the costs of removing the threat, paying a ransom, forensic IT investigation, legal advice, informing your clients and business interruption.

Here we are once again at the end of the year and the final magazine for 2015. Firstly I would like to thank Liz, Jean, Jackie who have worked with me on the sub editing and proofing of the magazine and also Ayla the Communications Officer and the office for their support throughout the year. There have been some great articles in the magazine over the year from the State Committees (Coaching, Umpires and Match) as well as from club publicity officers. Many thanks from all involved in the production of the magazine, without your efforts we would not have this great magazine. Carrying on with the tradition of great articles the Umpires have an article on maintenance of your bowls and umpires equipment and a neutral person. The Coaching Panel’s article is “Calling all Coaches” past and present. State Match Committee covers a number of topics including Mixed Pairs, Pennant Playoffs and State Carnival. The Governance Report covers Natural Justice. In General News there is the report on the State Championships. Congratulations to all State Championship winners and runners up. This issue includes the Club History of Chester Hill RSL, while District Association News covers many district events from championship results to Veteran's Day. 20 Clubs have submitted articles for the Nov/Dec issue with two Members 90th Birthdays and a 100th Birthday as well as Leichardt’s (One of the first 5 clubs) 90th Birthday.

The Magazine Committee, Liz, Jean and myself wish all members a very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year and look forward to hearing from you in 2016. Yours in Bowling Wendy Steyer Editor

President’s Message \\ ROBYN PROCTER \\ STATE PRESIDENT

“Change, like healing, takes time” – Veronica Roth

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Perfect conditions allowed for a great start for the State Championships at Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club, this year played over 9 days from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November. The first two days provided excellent bowling resulting in two very closely fought finals. The Senior Fours winners - Jan Rolph, Betty Herbertson, Vaana Ohmsen and Cheryl Gillard (Merrylands), runners up Merrill O’Sullivan, Kay McKenzie, Laurace Lawson and Annette McMillan from Dubbo City. The Open Fours winners - Beth Quinlan, Sharyn Renshaw, Jan Agar and Sarah Rumble (St Johns Park), runners up Judy Brady, Karen McFarlane, Barbara Barrett and Debbie Amor (Port City). Monday and Tuesday, sixteen teams bravely faced the inclement weather, not wet enough to be called from the green, although play was stopped when dark clouds, thunder and lightning appeared. A fascinating Triples final with Margaret Barnett, Kelly Richards and Natasha Scott (Raymond Terrace) winning by one shot over another very strong team with Ellen Ryan, Claire Turley and Karen Murphy (Cabramatta). With the championships almost half way completed the Pairs got off to a flying start, again overcast weather, players unperturbed by the conditions were displaying great talent in their quest to make the final. A second final for Natasha Scott and Kelly Richards again emerging as winners, Sharon Gilmore and Cheryl Douglas from Kahibah showing impressive ability as runners up. Natasha Scott, now in her third State Championship final and Annette McMillan from Dubbo City provided the spectators with fine bowling. Although off to a slow start, Annette did put in a mighty effort but not enough to catch up to the winner. Congratulations Natasha on winning the State Singles and your third 2015 State Championship title! Mixed Pairs - a first for WBNSW and the final event of the Championships saw Claire Turley & Ray Pearse (Cabramatta) and Denise Huender & Craig Townsend (Majellan) contest this inaugural event. A thrilling contest, each player showing great skills in a fast moving, shortened version of the game - 2 games, 5 ends each with a tie breaker if required. Our heartiest congratulations to the Majellan pair! No doubt much celebration on their return home!

BOWLS AUSTRALIA CONFERENCE AND PRESENTATION DINNER Due to meeting commitments in Queensland, I had to leave Tuncurry Beach and head for the Gold Coast. The two day conference also included the Bowls Australia Annual Presentation Dinner, a night dedicated to recognising past and present players and volunteers. The Female Bowler of the Year Award went to Natasha Scott. Due to Natasha’s commitments at the State Championships, a prerecorded video of her accepting the award was loudly applauded following the announcement on the night. Natasha has had astounding success this year and is on track to repeat her 2015 achievements during 2016. The Female Junior Award went to Jamie-Lee Worsnop, a most deserving recipient. Jamie-Lee has enjoyed an incredible rise to prominence on the back of both national and international arenas. Both Natasha and Jamie-Lee are from NSW clubs Raymond Terrace and St Johns Park respectively. Volunteer of the Year Award went to John Smith from the Hunter Zone, Sydney’s Regional Bowls Manager Chris Wallace was awarded the Regional Bowls Manager of the Year, and our own Dorothy (Dot) Roche was inducted into the BA Hall of Fame. Dot’s many achievements included representing Australia in the Commonwealth Games, winning a statelevel game every year during her illustrious career as well as being captain of the gold-medal winning team at the Melbourne World Championships. Check the BA website for details and photos of all recipients.

GRADES 1, 2 AND 3 STATE FLAGS UNFURLED Players and club members gathered on three special occasions to celebrate the unfurling of the State Pennant Flags won by Cabramatta (Grade 1), Merrylands (Grade 2) and St Johns Park (Grade 3). Each club, very proud of their respective grade winners, celebrated their wins accordingly, and what a privilege for me to be at each club to again meet and congratulate each player and their fellow members. At the time of printing Bowls Matters, I will be visiting Grade 4 Winners - Tura Beach for their unfurling and look forward to joining with them in their festivities.

PRESIDENT’S DAY AND 30TH BIRTHDAY AT KEW A beautiful day and a warm welcome from Kew’s President Chrystine Bouffler, her members and the many representatives from the many clubs in and around the District provided a great start for the combined celebrations. To be present alongside District President Diana, Presidents and representatives from other clubs, Patron Fay and fellow Foundation Members Fay and Margaret to celebrate a Birthday as well as thank a well-respected and loved President on her achievements and contributions over time, was indeed a privilege. My thanks to everyone on and off the green (I did enjoy the game of bowls) and to all those involved in organising the magnificent hospitality. Best wishes to each of you and I look forward to catching up again during the 2016 State Carnival!

BOARD MATTERS Currently the Board has seven Directors Beryl Watson, Nanette Jemmeson, Eunice (Topsy) Roberts, Sue O’Keefe, Robyn Procter (President) and two appointed Directors Pam Hockings and newly appointed Finance Director Barbara Holden. Following a decision by Bowls Australia to introduce fixed fees for 2016/17, WBNSW has decided to stay in line with the fee structure recently emailed to each Club Secretary, District Secretary and Regional Representative. Further to the presentation given at the AGM in September, WBNSW has set up a committee to investigate fully all the effects of introducing a club fixed fee for 2017/18. The committee will prepare and present a report based on its recommendations to the Board and once the report has been considered, WBNSW will notify each club of its decision.

NAME CHANGES NEW TITLES!! As from Monday 9 November 2015, “The Constitution Revision Board” will be known as “The Governance Committee” and “The Journal Committee” will be known as “The Magazine Committee”

Best wishes for the festive season and a happy and healthy 2016!

Executive Officer \\ MELANIE CANTWELL

Our new Executive Officer Melanie Cantwell In my first article for Bowls Matters, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your warm welcome to WBNSW and for the kindness extended over the last few weeks with the passing of my dad. Whilst I may never have played Bowls previously I am certainly on a fast track to understanding the game and very much enjoyed watching the singles final at the State Championships at Tuncurry. I have spent the last 20 years involved in organised sport, starting out as a Club Secretary and moving onto the State Board as Club Secretary and President for 9.5 years before accepting the role as Chief Operations Officer for 7.5 years. In addition I have served as Director on the National Board for 9 years and recently appointed onto the International Board. Between Club right through to International level there isn’t much I haven’t seen or heard about the trials and tribulations of organised sport. I recently completed my degree in Sports Business Administration to add to my Certificate IV in Governance and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. I am looking forward to working with all the clubs and hopefully through my experience will be able to assist clubs as needed. There is lots happening in the office, Kylie Hartley's hours have changed to Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and will be responsible for coordinating all the special days requests and all travel requests for the association (Kate will still look after the State team). WBNSW Board being fiscally responsible will be reducing the Bowls Matters to quarterly instead of bi-monthly from January 2016, and pages such as Around the Greens, District and Association News (competition results) and Club Spotlight will be included in the e-news which is produced fortnightly, the bonus

www.womensbowlsnsw.org

for the members is you won’t have to wait months now to see your name and photo in print for results and hot news, members will be able to read it as soon as it happens. If you don’t have an email address now is the time to get one. Seek help from family and friends if required, it’s easy! Email opens a whole new world of communication. WBNSW is moving with the times and stepping into the social media world and will be utilising Facebook, website, YouTube, live streaming more and more, sadly, gone are the days of hard copies for magazines and information. The Office is about to have our new server installed which the office staff are thrilled about, as our current server is on its last legs and causing lots of frustration. In addition the WIFI is being upgraded which now means the Boardroom and Committee rooms at the other end of the floor will now have WIFI access. Recently I attended the Bowls Australia National conference on the Gold Coast. Hot topics of discussion included moving to ‘fixed fees’ which we know everyone isn’t going to agree with, however for future sustainability and budgeting it was deemed the best way forward. Victoria are introducing a ‘20,000 campaign’ whereby they are hoping to have 20,000 valid email addresses on their database in the next 12 months. From the Census report, it was embarrassing to hear NSW

had the poorest response rate, a challenge we will definitely be aiming to fix for next year. The Regional Bowl Managers program was widely discussed by all the CEO’s and Presidents. The Australian Sports Commission gave a presentation on the ‘Sporting Schools Program’ and the benefits to Bowls. For those who are unaware of the program, Schools can apply to the Australian Sports Commission for funding to run specific sporting programs at their schools. Thus far around Australia 35 bowls programs with 800 participants have been delivered (there are over 4245 schools registered in the program). Victoria is leading the way with the number of programs and accredited coaches involved in the program. I challenge all the clubs to consider becoming involved in the Schools Program as it might be a way of earning some money for your club and recruiting new members. The 2 day conference was capped off with the Bowls Australia Sports Awards - John Smith from RBNSW won the Volunteer of the Year, Chris Wallace won the Regional Bowls Manage of the Year, Jamie-Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park) won the U18 Female Bowler of the Year, Jono Davis won the U18 Male Bowler of the Year, Dorothy Roche and Robert King were inducted into the Hall of Fame, Natasha Scott won the female bowler of the year – My congratulations to all.

DISPUTE

Keeping club camaraderie It is hard to believe that Christmas is almost here and clubs are busy planning their break up parties in an atmosphere of harmony and friendship. Unfortunately this atmosphere changes once the new bowling year starts and previous tensions and power games re-emerge.

Why does this happen? Let us consider some of the issues that can arise and disrupt a camaraderie within a Club. If these issues are handled correctly the outcomes will be positive.

NATURAL JUSTICE This is the way of insuring that all members involved in a dispute are given the opportunity to put their “side of the story” in a just and fair manner. When a complaint is first received by the Secretary concerning a club member, make sure of the following: •• The complaint must be in writing and signed and dated by the complainant. Verbal complaints should never be accepted and dealt with as they could be a vexatious complaint or simply gossip. •• After the complaint has been received by the Secretary/President of the Club or District she must decide if the complaint falls within the Secretary's jurisdiction [e.g. Assault or Fraud are Police matters] or if the complaint is vexatious or just gossip. •• Once the nature of the complaint is valid the Secretary/President MUST give the subject of the complaint a written copy and request that she/they attend a meeting to respond to the complaint. •• This meeting is normally held [14] fourteen days after receipt of the of the complaint.

Page 8

•• Both parties must be available to attend on this date. This gives the recipient of the complaint time to prepare for the meeting and gather all relevant information relevant to the complaint. •• The subject of the complaint must be advised that she can bring a support person/advocate or witnesses to the meeting. •• A panel of no more than three members is convened by the Secretary. These members must not be involved with either party or have a vested interest in the outcome of the complaint. The panel is usually comprised of members of the Management Committee but can be members from another Club or District. •• The panel must be given all the relevant written information about the complaint and MUST maintain confidentiality at all times. On no account should the complaint be discussed or read out in public, e.g. Club or District meeting, nor should members ever take a vote for disciplinary action to be taken. The Disciplinary Panel of no more than three members of the Management Committee including the Secretary, makes that decision after they have investigated the matter.

Once the panel has been convened the following people may address them: •• •• •• ••

The complainant Witnesses for the complainant Subject of the complaint Witnesses for the subject of the complaint.

Once all the interested parties have addressed the panel, they must consider only the evidence supplied that is relevant to the complaint and decide on the validity of the complaint, and if any action needs to be taken against the subject of the complaint. A full record of the meeting is recorded and kept by the Secretary and retained in a safe secure place. The following must be considered before any decision on the action to be taken is made: •• Should the panel have considered this complaint? •• Has there been a previous complaint about this member? •• Has the complaint been proven without a doubt? •• How severe is the complaint? •• Was the member named in the complaint knowingly or deliberately breaking a rule/ regulation or policy? •• Within the guidelines of natural justice what would be a reasonable outcome, e.g. the penalty cannot outweigh the crime? •• Is any action necessary? •• Could mediation resolve the conflict?

Bowls Matters November – December 2015

W W

Complaint! CLUB Once the decision has been made the complainant and the subject of the complaint are informed of the panel’s decision in writing. Both parties must be given a reasonable time (normally 14 days) to lodge an appeal. If an appeal is lodged the whole process starts again with a new panel. The same people cannot rehear the complaint.

VEXATIOUS COMPLAINTS These complaints are usually made by members with the intent of making trouble and unrest in the club. They are often a verbal complaint made in a public forum. Vexatious complaints should never be tolerated as they can be damaging to the club/district and take away the opportunity for goodwill and sportsmanship. Lawn Bowls is about playing a game of bowls and it should not be a forum for members to air their petty grievances and create chaos. You are fortunate that you only have to wonder about your game of bowls.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Q. What should be done if a District/Club receives an unsigned letter of complaint? A. Nothing, even if the writer of the letter is known no action can be taken. The writer of the letter must sign and date the letter before it can be dealt with. Q. What happens if the Management Committee suspends a member from the ladies bowling club? A. After being advised of her suspension the member has two weeks to lodge an appeal. If there is no appeal the Club Secretary informs the Club Ltd, WBNSW and the District of the suspension. If the member appeals against her suspension another panel is convened to hear the case again. Q. What is the effect of a member’s suspension from: A. (i) The Women’s Bowling Club? The suspended player cannot play any bowls in any club in NSW, she cannot Transfer her membership or enter any competitions if the closing date is during the period of her suspension. (ii) The Club Ltd.? The player cannot play any bowls at the club but can play bowls at any other club during the period of her suspension. Q. Can a player be a member of more than one bowling club? A. Yes, a bowler can be a member of as many bowling clubs as they wish but can only be affiliated with WBNSW through one of these clubs. This is the club where the member nominates to play all State Championships including pennants. Q. Can a Bowling Club continue to function if it does not have a President or a Management Committee? A. Yes, provided there is a Secretary to receive all the communications from WBNSW and a member to arrange the bowling activities the club can continue to be affiliated with WBNSW. Q. Can a District WBA elect a Life Member? A. No. There is no provision in a District Constitution for a Life Member. If a Life Member has been elected by a District their Life Membership will not be recognised by WBNSW and the presentation will not be published in Bowls Matters. Robyn and I wish all our members and their families a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year.

Match Report // PAM HOCKINGS, JENNIFER PALMER, JOAN THOMAS // MATCH@WOMENSBOWLSNSW.ORG

2016 Mixed Pairs We direct all District Match Committees to either run the Mixed Pairs event in 2016 themselves or find a proactive Club in your District to run it on your behalf. The option chosen in each District will affect when the event is scheduled in your Calendar and Regional playoffs programmes. As was the case in this inaugural year, the format and criteria remain the same. Sets play with 2 x 5 end sets and a one end tie break if required. 3 bowls pairs and either player can play skip. The entry is taken from the Club of the affiliated female player and the male player can be from any affiliated Club in NSW. We recommend sectional play (four to a section depending on entry numbers) and with the quick game format it is possible to play out a section in just over half a day. Play is to be scheduled for either twilight/ evenings or weekends to allow players not available during the usual playing times to still participate at a competitive level. Regional playoffs then need to be coordinated between participating Districts and the Regional winner advised to State Match Committee on the appropriate form available on the website before the closing date for the State Championships as listed on the State Program.

2016 PENNANTS PLAYOFFS With the advice of the change in the start dates for the Pennant Playoffs from the 8th to the 15th August, as advised by email, we also advise that the format will be slightly altered for 2016 and the event will be finalised in four days. This will obviously only affect those teams that win through Regional playoffs, and the schedule for the Grades will be forwarded to participating Clubs after the closing date.

www.womensbowlsnsw.org

2016 STATE CARNIVAL The 2016 State Carnival entry numbers have been increased for next year to allow 280 teams to participate instead of 224 as in 2015. With the new initiative of sending the entry form to all Club Secretaries on the same day, it is hoped that this will be viewed as a fairer method of entry form distribution. Good luck to all successful entrants and we look forward to seeing you all in Port Macquarie and attending the Opening Dinner which will be held at Panthers Club on the Sunday, May 22. While it is gratifying to be sent emails and asked questions, so that issues and queries can be resolved, we also find it frustrating that many of the answers provided are already documented in either the Law Book, Conditions of Play, existing Policies or have been addressed in recent magazine articles and the answers readily available to all members with little effort on their part. Although I suppose it takes even less effort to make a phone call or type an email and have somebody else find the reference. Again frustrating when we are asked to provide a written reply to back up a response, when the answer is already in print in current documentation. It is always difficult to prevent incorrect information or interpretation of rules being voiced in Clubs, but sometimes a little bit of thought or discussion with Management Committee before challenging a fellow player, could prevent unpleasant situations from arising. For instance, some time ago we had a member contact the office for a ruling as she had been told by an opponent in her Club that “she couldn’t wear her rain jacket if it wasn’t raining”. The member who

made the call was quite distressed, because she didn’t want to do the wrong thing, but felt what she had been told could not be correct. The weather was cold and windy and she was wanting to wear the jacket for protection. The rain jacket was navy blue and purchased from a Bowls Shop, so why would anyone think there was restrictions on when the garment could be worn. It was pre compulsory BA logo, so that was not the issue, but the player who made the complaint thought she was correct and without discussion with anyone else, voiced her thoughts and caused distress and confusion to a member who was doing no wrong. My advice to players these days when confronted with seemingly unreasonable directives is that they should ask politely to see the ruling in writing, in current documentation for their future reference. This should hopefully prevent incorrect and outdated rules and past practices being kept alive to further complicate what is in effect a very simple game.

"...many of the answers provided are already documented in either the Law Book, Conditions of Play, existing Policies or have been addressed in recent magazine articles... Page 11

Umpire’s Report // LESLEY SWALES, BARBARA STONHAM, BEVERLEY MITCHELL // UMPIRES@WOMENSBOWLSNSW.ORG

MAINTENANCE TIME! It’s that time of the year again for maintenance on your bowls and umpire equipment. Bowls: If your bowls need paint renewed, it is a good time to paint them before the Club Championships or Pennants start. Umpire’s Equipment: Now is the time to take a look at your gear. It should be maintained in top condition. Make sure all equipment is clean and rust free. Clear out all unnecessary or broken items from your kits and replace ready for the new year. A BASIC KIT SHOULD CONTAIN:•• A current copy of the Laws of the Sport of Bowls, Crystal Mark 3rd Edition •• A copy of the current year’s WBNSW Conditions of Play [i.e. for 2016] •• A tape measure at least 30 metres long •• A long flexible measure i.e. box string measure or a long string measure •• Callipers [varying sizes], Feeler Gauges, Wedges [chocks]. •• Trammels, Orbital Measure, Telescopic Measure. •• Liner Siter and/or Boundary Scope •• Square with levelling bubble •• Spike or knitting needle – fat bright coloured for obstructed measure •• Plastic cards [i.e. garden tags, thick cardboard]

ARE YOU AWARE? •• A Neutral person is one who is not a player on the rink of play. This includes the Marker and the Umpire. C23.1 •• A Neutral object is: •• A jack, bowl or other object not belonging to any player on the rink of play C23.2.1 •• A line jack or a line bowl belonging to a player on a neighbouring rink C23.2.2 •• A dead bowl that is at rest and has not been removed from the rink of play C23.2.3

Page 12

•• A jack in its original course is from its delivery until it comes to rest. C.15 •• A bowl in its original course is from its delivery until it comes to rest, no matter how many times it comes into contact with the jack or other bowls before it comes to rest or becomes dead. C.15 •• A jack or bowl in motion is one which is moving during play after it has been at rest as part of the head. C.16

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE 1. During a match a player had a drive which hit the jack and breaks it in two pieces. What would happen? 2. Team A’s third is requested to do an upshot which misses the head and is heading for the ditch. Skip B stops the bowl just before it enters the ditch. Skip A objects saying she should have let the bowl fall into the ditch. The umpire is called. What decision would be given? 3. Can a skip stand in front of the head and direct the bowler to put a bowl where the skip is standing? 4. Judy delivered her bowl before her opponents bowl has come to rest. She was given a warning by the umpire [Law 11.2.2.1]. However several ends later Judy again delivered her bowl before her opponents bowl had come to rest. This bowl disturbed the head. What would happen? 5. Player A’s delivered bowl comes to rest and then falls over and touches the jack after Player B’s bowl has been delivered. Skip A moves forward to mark it as a toucher to which Skip B objects. Is Player A’s bowl a toucher? 6. The jack is right against the boundary line. The last bowl of the end comes to rest on its own rink very close to the jack. Before the thirds start to measure the bowl falls and pushes the jack over the boundary line. Third A wishes to replace the bowl and jack to their former position whilst Third B calls the end dead. Who is correct? 7. Third B delivers her bowl fairly wide. As it re-enters its own rink it contacts a bowl from Team A which had been declared dead but left lying just outside the boundary line. As a result of the collision both bowls came to rest in their own rink. What is the position regarding the bowls? 8. The marker in a singles game has been asked by one of the players to measure all shots during the game. At the conclusion of one end, before the players have reached the head, the marker has kicked the bowls out of the head and recorded the score on the card. Is she correct? 9. Player A inadvertently delivered another players bowl which touches the jack. What should happen? 10. A jack in the ditch is moved by a non-toucher played by Team A entering the ditch. Team A skip says ‘we have to agree on the replacement of the jack or the end is dead’. Skip B disagrees saying ‘it is my duty to re-position the jack’. Who is correct? Bowls Matters November – December 2015

Lesley, Barbara and Bev wish all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

ANSWERS 1. The Umpire would ask for a replacement jack. [Law 30.1.] The end would be declared dead and Law 20 will apply. [Law 30.2.] 2. Skip A was correct. Skip B should not have stopped the bowl. [Law 37.1.1.3] As the bowl in course was displaced by an opponent [Skip B], the skip of the team that played the bowl [Skip A] must choose whether to: have the bowl replayed; Law 37.1.1.3.3, place the bowl where the skip believes it would have come to rest; or leave the bowl where it came to rest 37.1.1.3.2 and 37.1.1.3.3. 3. Yes she can indicate where she would like the bowl to finish, but as soon as a bowl is delivered she must take her position behind the jack as described in Law 12.1.2. [Law 12.1.3] 4. Judy’s bowl would be declared dead and removed [Law 11.2.2.2]. The opposing skip would choose to replace the head [Law 11.2.2.2.1], leave the head as altered [Law 11.2.2.2.2] or declare the end dead. [Law 11.2.2.2.3] 5. No. For a bowl to be a toucher it must touch the jack before the next bowl is delivered. [Law 14.2.1] 6. Third B. The bowl and jack shall remain in the new position. [Law 23.6.3] The jack is dead as it is wholly beyond the boundary of the rink of play. [Law 19.1.2] 7. The dead bowl belonging to Team A would be removed. [Law 17.1.4] The bowl belonging to Third B would be replayed [Law 37.3.1.3] as the dead bowl became a neutral object. [C.23.2.3] 8. No. No bowl shall be moved until both players have agreed to each shot. [Law 22.2] 9. The other players bowl must be replaced by Player A’s bowl. [Law 29.2.1] and Player A’s bowl must be marked as a toucher. [Law 29.2.2] 10. Skip B. If a jack at rest in the ditch is displaced by a non-toucher entering the ditch, an opponent or the marker must put it back to its former position. [Law 38.5.3]

Coaching Report // KATHRYN CHATILLON, DEBY BRIEN, RUTH WOOD // COACHES@WOMENSBOWLSNSW.ORG

Calling all coaches - present and future The NSW Coaching Panel had the pleasure recently of presenting a Pennant Skills Coaching Clinic in the Southern part of NSW. At the completion of a clinic we distribute a “feedback form” for the club members to fill in to assess our clinics; comment on what we do, and if there is some way to make improvements or perhaps a more club specific area to concentrate on. We love this feedback. The most remarkable thing about the feedback from this clinic, was that they would have liked to have a more ‘oneon-one’ approach. There are only three coaches on the State Panel and usually any club coaches in the participating Club or District are invited to assist in the clinic, however unfortunately there were no coaches in this district. To divide three between thirty participants makes for a big job with not a lot of one on one. We discussed with the club the solution to this problem was for some of their members to attend an accredited Club Coach course, enabling them to have someone there to help all the time.

Page 14

Details regarding Coaching is available on the WBNSW website under Development. Forms can also be located under Members Resources > Forms. Information and education is beneficial to all. The Presenters and Assessors are only too willing to come to your club (within NSW) to educate and help create a stronger and more competitive Club and District. We will only make our sport stronger by being involved and taking responsibility for the positive direction of our own clubs. Coaching Courses are gender neutral and all that is required are five registered members to participate in a Coaching Course. The duration of the course is dependent on the type of course undertaken. Intro Coach is a four hour course and Club Coach is a two day course, with some on green training. It is not necessary to complete the Intro course prior to the Club Coach course, as they are both stand-alone programmes.

Bowls is a sport that can adapt to most disabilities and health problems whether recovering from a heart attack or a stroke or getting over surgery. Coaches are able to assist you and to adapt the skills of the game to suit you and to help keep you mobile, active and stronger. The game keeps you active on a social level as well because we can never have too many friends. The bowlers arm is another area that the State panel are being instructed in so that we can pass on the knowledge to you and your club coaches. To all the accredited coaches out there – the process of reaccreditation has never been easier; stay on top of your accreditation, check the due date on your Coaches ID card, take the initiative and get reaccreditation done early. The reaccreditation form can be found on our website. “Don’t Limit Your Challenges – Challenge Your Limits” Jerry Dunn

Club History

Chester Hill R.S.L

WEST PENNANT HILLS MARGARET WIGHTON Margaret joined West Pennant Hills in July 1993 and since that time has rendered significant personal service. Shortly after becoming a member she joined the Social Committee, served on that Committee for three years and then progressed to Selection for two terms. She has been the President; Vice President twice; Honorary Treasurer; has held the position of Club District Delegate for eleven years and has been the Publicity Officer and you might as well say the Historian as well, for many years keeping the beautifully organised photo albums denoting Championship and “special events” held. Margaret is currently Chair of the Operational Committee, a member of the Mixed Bowls Committee, is very much involved with the Sunday social bowls and still a very keen bowler. Her bowling skills have been very significant over the years, having won the Minor Singles, Pairs twice, Fours five times and was a member of the winning No. 3 Pennant team in 2002, the No. 4 Pennant team in 2004 and was a sub for the winning No. 4 Pennant team in 2011. She is a respected and indeed a very endearing friend to all and in the past had been a mentor for the newer bowlers. She is very knowledgeable as far as club responsibilities are concerned, consequently quite often you will hear someone saying “ask Margaret, she will know” and of course many have been reminded of her “eye for detail” on many occasions. Margaret had been honoured as a Patron of the club in 2010 and during the Club’s Annual General Meeting on July 14, 2015 was awarded a Club Life Membership. Congratulations Margaret, well deserved.

On Tuesday July 24, 1962 ladies met with Ike Denley, Foundation President of the Men’s Chester Hill Bowling Club, to discuss forming the Chester Hill Women’s Bowling Club. After talks with President Ike, the ladies went ahead and nominated their first Committee and Edie Denley was elected as foundation President. Until such time as the Club became affiliated in November 1962 the Club could not vote for Bowls Secretary or Selectors. Members of the ladies auxiliary provided and prepared afternoon tea for the Men’s Club in a shed. They worked very hard in their fundraising and with proceeds from this and other projects going into Club funds they were instrumental in purchasing the first lot of tables and chairs for the Club. These ladies formed the strong foundation that paved the way for the formation of the ladies Club. The Chester Hill Women’s Bowling Club was affiliated in November 1962 when 34 ladies, after being nominated and seconded became Foundation Members. Two of these ladies, Joy Davidson and Lil Holloway, are still active members today. At this time there is one remaining Life Member Dawn Miell. Over the years, membership grew to over 100, but unfortunately today is reduced to 29 affiliated members and 5 social members. In 2006 the Club was taken over by the Chester Hill RSL and is now known as the Chester Hill RSL Women’s Bowling Club. Chester Hill has always been known as the friendly club and this still applies today. The spirit of friendship and generosity that Foundation Members instilled into the ladies Club so many years ago is today as strong as ever. They would all be proud of what they achieved and to know their hard work is remembered and appreciated by Members in 2015. Thanks to Joy Davidson for this brief history.

MACLEAN SPRINGTIME TRIPLES On Thursday September 10, ninety-six bowlers from all clubs in the Clarence River District and beyond enjoyed the inaugural Gwen Ford Springtime Triples at Maclean Women’s Bowling Club. Gwen Ford was a very talented bowler who won the Major Singles twenty times as well as many other championships at club and district level. The highlight of her career in bowls was when she skipped the number 3 pennant team to victory at the state finals in 1995. A table was set up in the auditorium with a photo of Gwen, the new perpetual trophy and a list of her achievements and awards. Her two daughters, Christine Porter and Robyn Clarke, other relatives and close friends were special guests on the day. Two games of eighteen ends were played after which everyone repaired to the auditorium for the presentation of prizes. Life member, Lorraine Eggins, introduced the special guests and spoke about Gwen Ford’s achievements. Patron, Marie Burnes, who was a close friend and bowling colleague of Gwen reminisced about their bowling friendship. The head of the social committee, Leonie Bodycote, presented flowers to Christine and Robyn on behalf of the Maclean Women’s Bowling Club.

2015 NSW CHAMPS

// General News - 2015 State Championships Report

2015 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT Another great 9 days at Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club enjoying the hospitality of President Deirdre and her ladies and the hardworking group of volunteer men, led by Rex who put out chairs, signs on scoreboards, mats, jacks and providing the BBQ for spectators and also clear it away at the end of each day. Tremendous work goes into ensuring all players have an enjoyable time during this event and we sincerely thank the sponsors, St Johns Park BC and Tuncurry Beach for their support. This year has seen BCiB attend as an Association supporter and provide some giveaways for players and spectators during the week. Our thanks for their ongoing support. The Championships commenced with the Senior and Open Fours with eager competitors from across the State. Some very close games in both disciplines gave the numerous spectators and supporters plenty of good play to appreciate. Open Fours was contested by Inverell, Bomaderry, Rylstone, Boolaroo, Raymond Terrace, Wisemans Park Wollongong City, St Johns Park, Taren Point, Asquith, Port Macquarie City, Alstonville, Springwood, Pittwater Memorial, Henty, The Rules and Merimbula Imlay. Semi finals between the teams from Boolaroo and St Johns Park and Port City and Henty saw some very excited players participating. The final game between St Johns Park and Port City was a well contested final with Sarah Rumble, Jan Agar, Sharyn Renshaw and Beth Quinlan SJP 29 defeat Judy Brady, Karen McFarlane, Barbara Barrett and Debbie Amor from Port City 10. In the Senior Fours the clubs represented were Dubbo City, Alder Park, Tumut, Malua Bay, Double Bay, Milton Ulladulla, Warilla, Cudgen Leagues, Glenbrook Panthers, Northmead, South West Rocks, Harbord, Charlestown, Merrylands, Young, and Inverell. Again several games with a score difference of only one deciding the winner and the final was contested between Merrill O’Sullivan, Kay McKenzie, Laurace Lawson and Annette McMillan, Dubbo City who were defeated by Cheryl Gillard, Vaana Ohmsen, Betty Herbertson and Jan Rolph from Merrylands. This Merrylands team was a winner in 2013 and again raised the trophy in 2015. The State Triples was plagued by bad weather and the afternoon game on Monday was only completed on three rinks, with the fourth having to return Tuesday morning to play the last four ends. A short, sharp storm with some spectacular lightning and heavy rain slowed the greens considerably for the Semi Final and Final games on Tuesday which were played in very damp conditions and the players were in and out of their rain coats all day. The spectators proved keen and a sea of umbrellas surrounded the green to witness some exciting games in the Semi Final between Raymond Terrace and Double Bay and Cabramatta and Charlestown. Margaret Barnett, Kelly Richards and Natasha Scott, Raymond Terrace defeated Iris Kampel, Pam Stein and Barbara Shotland, Double Bay by one shot to progress to the final. Ellen Ryan, Claire Turley and Karen Murphy, Cabramatta defeated Rosemary Wayland, Julie Garry and Kay Shuttlewood, Charlestown. The final between Raymond Terrace and Cabramatta was a well-played and closely contested game, resulting in an extra end needing to be played when the set 18 ends saw a 16 all draw. Natasha played a third running shot to remove the shot bowl on the extra end to secure the State Triples title for the second year in a row. For the Pairs event, teams were from Warilla, Maclean, Narrabri, Cooma, Cabramatta, North Ryde RSL, Bomaderry, Raymond Terrace, West Wyalong, Austral, Tuncurry Beach, Kahibah, Gulgong, Taren Point, Holbrook and

Page 22

Turramurra. The weather had improved overnight and the two days of the Pairs was played in conditions that players have come to expect during visits to Tuncurry. Once again a number of games in the early rounds were closely contested and other scores did not always reflect the calibre of bowls being played. One semi final saw Leone Barnett and Julea Morgan, Warilla against Kelly Richards and Natasha Scott, Raymond Terrace, with the Raymond Terrace team progressing to the final. The other semi final between Sharon Gilmore and Cheryl Douglas, Kahibah against Joan Thomas and Claire Kelly, Taren Point provided a high class game for the attending spectators and supporters of both teams. The final in the State Pairs was a classic example of the score being no indication of the standard of the game and a very appreciative crowd were once again in attendance to see Kelly Richards and Natasha Scott emerge victorious. The presentation at the end of the Pairs event was an emotional one for the Raymond Terrace girls, with Kelly announcing her ‘retirement’ from representative and competitive bowls for an indefinite period to concentrate on saving for her future home and wedding. It was gratifying to see the friendship and camaraderie that has developed between Kelly and Natasha over the past few years while they have enjoyed great success as team mates. Best wishes to Kelly for the future and look forward to seeing her back on the greens one day. More sunny skies greeted the players in the State Singles event from North Ryde RSL, Dee Why, Commercial Albury, Raymond Terrace, Tuncurry Beach, Bomaderry, Adaminaby, South Grafton, Inverell, Charlestown, Cootamundra Country, Goulburn Railway, Double Bay, Ashfield, Dubbo City and St Marys RSL. Players progressing through to the semi final stage were Natasha Scott, Raymond Terrace, Deborah Wilson, Bomaderry, Halina Wuro, Charlestown and Annette McMillan, Dubbo City. In a see-saw game Natasha won the game 25 - 21 against Deb Wilson and Annette McMillan defeated Halina Wuro 25 - 24 in a thrilling game that had all spectators on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately in the final the windy conditions continued and there seemed to be a lot of very small gaps through which Annettes’ bowls slipped. Despite lady luck not being on her side, Annette acquitted herself admirably and the end score of 25 - 18 to Natasha provided a worthy final. The inaugural Mixed Pairs event commenced during the playing of the singles semi and final and all competitors seemed to enjoy the format and the three sectional rounds were played before lunch. The Match Committee thanks the players involved in the State Singles event, Natasha at Tuncurry and Ray Pearse at Ettalong who made themselves available at the earliest opportunity to allow the Mixed Pairs to conclude on Sunday as scheduled. Congratulations to Natasha and Ray on winning their Singles titles - well done. Section winners in the Pairs were Denise Huender and Craig Townsend, Majellan, Neville and Bev Ryan, Narrabri, Claire Turley and Ray Pearse, Cabramatta and Sharyn and Don Ryman, Oak Flats. The semi final between Huender/Townsend and the Ryans came down to the one end tie break and Denise and Craig progressed to the final against Claire and Ray who defeated Sharyn and Don Ryman in straight sets. The final was also decided by a tie break and the title goes to Denise and Craig as the inaugural Mixed Pairs winners for 2015. After 9 days of intense competition and all games played in the spirit of good sportsmanship we again thank Tuncurry for hosting another successful State Championships. Also to the Umpires and Markers who gave their time and the supporters of the participants who travelled with them to Tuncurry and the local spectators who all contributed to a great atmosphere.

Special Days WESTERN SUBURBS (CROYDON) UNDER 5 PAIRS On August 2, Western Suburbs (Croydon) hosted an Under 5 Pairs Tournament. There were 18 entries from various clubs from different parts of Sydney. A trading table and morning tea started the day well, followed by 3 timed games of pairs of 9 ends each, filling two greens. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day. A raffle with some great prizes, many donated by generous friends was held. This year, the winning team was Lynelle Bevis, Helen Larsen from the host club.

WESTERN SUBURBS (CROYDON) PRESIDENT’S DAY & 4TH BIRTHDAY On August 8 the club’s 4th birthday and President’s Day were celebrated. Director, Sue O’Keefe was the very welcome guest from WBNSW. Together with President of 4 years, Jean Wisby, Sue presented merit badges to Honorary Treasurer, Marina Deluchi and Honorary Secretary, Jennifer Wisby. To cap off the celebrations Sue O’Keefe presented President Jean with a merit badge, too. These women have worked tirelessly to make the club both successful and happy. The members were delighted to host a happy celebration with representatives from the City West District, the clubs within the district and the men’s club. Prior to lunch there was a spider followed by 15 ends of 3 bowl triples with a different rule for each end. Much fun was had by all.

TURA BEACH MEMORIAL SHIELD DAY

NARRANDERA 60TH BIRTHDAY

On Tuesday, September 8 Tura Beach held their Memorial Shield Day with 56 players taking part. This day was in memory of two club members, Dorothy Campbell and Francis Coff, who passed away during the past year.

Narrandera celebrated their 60th Birthday on August 6, 2015. All clubs from the Murrumbidgee District were represented as well as Hillston and Lockhart. They enjoyed morning tea before they went out to the greens for a spider and two games of bowls.

Lyn Jacobsen spoke about Dorothy’s achievements, with Dorothy winning many Club Championship events and skipped in two winning State Pennant Flag teams. Teresa Hamer presented a piece about Francis that had been written by Joy Clarke. Fourteen teams of fours played two games of 11 ends, these teams were made up of four teams from Eden, one from Merimbula, one from Tathra and the remainder from Tura Beach. The winning team with 26 points was the Merimbula ladies Chris Keens, Jan Hammond, Norma McCone, Barbara Ditchfield (skip). The runners up with 20 points on a count back was the Tura Beach team of Mary Murray, Helen Kay, Helen Elliott, Teresa Hamer (skip).

A hot lunch was served in the dining room which was gaily decorated in the clubs colours with red and green balloons. President Jan Bock welcomed District President, Estelle Errey and her team, Club and District President Terry Roach, visiting clubs and past members. Estelle and Terry responded and congratulated Narrandera on achieving 60 years of bowling, despite falling membership when so many clubs are closing. Terry especially thanked the women for all the support they give to the Club Limited particularly in the running of the Rum Cup. A highlight of the day was the presentation of Achievement Certificates to the four longest serving members of the club. Sisters, Doris Davies and Ethel Winnel have been members for 44 years. During that time they have both been successful bowlers at club and District level. Doris has been President, Vice- President several times and served on most committees. Ethel has won the club Singles 10 times and has also been on most committees over the years.

Unfortunately, due to ill health, she no longer bowls but is a keen supporter of the club. Myrtle Clark, a member for 41 years, has served as club President, District President, club Secretary and as a member of most committees as well as being a competent bowler. Myrtle’s health now prevents her from taking an active part in bowls. Gloria Lemon has been an active member for 36 years. During that time she has served on Match and Selection Committees and has been a driving force when catering needed to be done. Gloria is presently on the board of the Club Limited and works hard selling raffle tickets. She is also a successful bowler. The birthday cake, made by Pam Ashcroft and iced by Gloria Clark, was then cut by Ethel and Doris while everyone sang Happy Birthday. The winners of the games of bowls were then presented with their prizes. First prize went to M Pete, K Marks, E Sullivan, P Wakeman from Leeton and District while R/ups were J McNaughton, K Sproston, L McInerney, D Angove from Narrandera. Lockhart’s team of K Egan, P Winnel, R Edgerton, B Doherty took home the consolation prize. Everyone enjoyed the progressive raffle before heading home.

GOSFORD CITY CHARITY DAY Gosford City held a Charity Day on September 2, 2015 where they raised $1,500. What a great day the bowlers had. This year members from the men’s bowling club were invited and this proved to be a huge success. There were tombolas, cake raffles, a variety of stalls and of course as always, the friendly spider in addition to playing turn-around-triples.

GOSFORD CITY VETERAN’S DAY Central Coast District recently hosted a Veteran’s Day at Gosford City, where 82 veteran bowlers attended from all over the District for a wonderful day of bowling, fun and friendship. The photograph shows, Irene McIntyre of Mingara and Dot Rothery of Gosford City. Both ladies are 95 and still very active bowlers and they do like to win. A point in fact as Dot won second prize on the day.

GOULBURN RAILWAY ELIZABETH SMITH’S 100TH BIRTHDAY Goulburn Railway recently held a special afternoon tea to celebrate Elizabeth Smith’s 100th birthday. Elizabeth is Patron and Life Member of the club who has had a long association with bowls over many years. She first joined the Railway Women’s Club in 1974 when it was known as Lilac City Women’s Bowling Club. The following year no member would volunteer to be the club’s secretary so Elizabeth took on the task, which then continued for 19 years. Before coming to Goulburn she had been a Foundation Member of the Eden Women’s in 1965. She also spent time at Merimbula and Cootamundra Bowling Clubs. A cause close to Elizabeth was ‘Bowl for Others’, a charity that is supported by all women bowlers in New South Wales. For her work with this charity she was made a Life Governor of Sydney Hospital in 1985.

SUTHERLAND CHARITY DAY Over the past four years the members of Sutherland have raised funds for the Kookaburra Kids Foundation, based in the Sutherland Shire. Each year a cheque has been donated to the Foundation which supports children living in families affected by mental illness. The club’s Annual Charity Day kicks off their year of fundraising for the Foundation. This event is always a wonderful success and is well attended, not only by its own members, but by neighbouring clubs in the Shire as well. This is the main fundraiser, but is well supported by funds raised from holding stalls at Caringbah Markets, garage sales, as well as the ladies baking cakes and slices and the everpopular making of homemade jams. The club acknowledges the wonderful work the ladies have done, in particular, a big thank you to Julie Stewart, Lorna Newnham and Noelene Wood, who have worked tirelessly over this time. At a ‘special’ morning tea, Club President Sandra Jowett, presented the Foundation’s CEO, Pam Brown, with a cheque for $6,000 and thanked her for taking the time out of her busy day to be with the members. Ms Brown expressed her gratitude and spoke at length of the work the Foundation is doing and the rewards they are seeing. This inspirational work has spurred the members on for another year of fundraising for such a wonderful cause.

Club President S. Leisemann, M. Dougherty, E. Wellard, G. Dent, (Newcastle Calvary Mater Hospital Auxiliary), and Club Secretary V. Rankin.

TEA GARDENS ONCOLOGY DAY The Tea Gardens Annual Oncology Day was once again very well attended by both men and women on September 25, 2015. Over 80 members and guests turned out to take part in a fun filled day. Sadly the bowls had to be cancelled. Guess why? The weather again. The main aim was to collect money for the Oncology Unit at the Newcastle Calvary Mater Hospital. The President of the Ladies Auxiliary, Elaine Wellard attended with two of her committee members, Margaret Dougherty and Glad Dent. They enjoyed lunch and were more than delighted to receive a cheque for $6,000 for the Oncology Unit. This day could not have happened without the donations from so many businesses and clubs in two little towns, their generosity amazes year after year. The Women’s Bowling Club Committee also do a mighty job of organising and arranging all the tombola prizes. Not forgetting the Social Committee who delighted members with a beautiful lunch. The day would not be complete without Auctioneer Max Stephens getting more money by putting all sorts of items under the hammer, for instance 5 dozen oysters, wheel alignments, and more. A very successful day all round!!

The total amount of money raised for the Kookaburra Kids Foundation now stands at $21,500 – a truly wonderful effort. Well done ladies.

YOUNG 85TH BIRTHDAY

Elizabeth was a long time Group Representative for E and F group and regularly attended meetings in Sydney and arranged the matches between the two groups and against the Metropolitan. Past and present bowling club members were welcomed to this very special event by President, Joyce Wade. A great time was then had chatting about past and present bowling occasions. Elizabeth’s hard work and dedication was acknowledged and she was thanked for it. At the conclusion, the birthday cake was cut by Elizabeth together with life member, Barbara Edwards. Congratulations Elizabeth.

TAREN POINT CHARITY DAY Taren Point recently held its annual Charity Day with its chosen charity being Motor Neurone disease. Some members have experienced loss from this insidious disease and it was, therefore, no surprise with the impact of this disease on club members that there was a concerted effort by all, especially those on club and management committees. The club is appreciative of the effort of a wide range of people on their charity day. The continued support of Century 21 as charity day sponsor is valued. The club is also indebted to local businesses who generously donated raffle prizes. Also acknowledged are the club foot soldiers who over preceding weeks, had walked from business to business to gain many valuable raffle prizes and silent auction items. Club committee members manned a variety of stalls from tombola (lucky dip), plants,

cakes, a miscellaneous stall of treasures and of course sellers for the mega raffle. The club is indebted to all club and committee members for their unity of purpose shown by their energetic and committed approach to the day. They were the ones who led to this being a resounding success. In addition, the club was grateful to the ladies who came from approximately 20 clubs spread across three main districts, Sutherland Shire, Eastern Suburbs and Georges River. Their presence contributed to this successful day. Winners on the day were the Earlwood Bardwell Park Team and runners up were a composite Taren Point / Engadine Team The club is proud to report on this great charity day of fun, friendship and good bowling. It led to a most successful day and the amount of $5,400.00 raised is the best charity day result ever.

THE 2015 DRAKES PRIDE NSW CHAMPIONS (l-r) State President R. Procter, Leichhardt President R Rodwell, City West District President M. McGlinn

LEICHHARDT 90TH ANNIVERSARY AND PRESIDENT’S DAY Sunday August 30 was a very proud day for the members of Leichhardt when they welcomed guests to a double celebration, the 90th Anniversary of the club and President Rona Rodwell’s President’s Day. President Rona and her committee greeted her State guests, President Robyn Procter and Regional Representative Margaret Wicks, District guests, City West President Michelle McGlinn and Vice President Norelle Lingard, Executives of the Registered Club and the Men’s Bowling Club and Life Members of both clubs. Leichhardt Ladies Club was formed on November 9, 1925 and was one of five pioneer clubs which formed the basis of the NSWWBA. Leichhardt is the only club which has been in continual operation for all these 90 years and has always retained Leichhardt Ladies Club as its official title. A precis of the club’s history and photos of its bowling achievements were printed in the beautiful programme, the cover of which displayed the A-State Pennant winners of 1931-32. The club cake, made and decorated by Mrs M. Threlfo of City West District club Lidcombe, also featured this team photo. The 90th anniversary toast was a tribute of gratitude to the countless women who, over this long time had through their dedicated work, enabled the club to survive even in most difficult times. In the toast to President Rona, her magnificent record of service to the club was detailed. For 22 consecutive years President Rona has been Secretary 16 years and President for two terms of 3 years. During this time Rona has also been City West District President and is beginning her 7th year as Vice President. It must have been women of such dedication, who along the years saved Leichhardt.

The 2015 Drakes Pride NSW Champions League commenced on September 19 with 7 weeks of games before the final round was played and concluded on November 15 at Warilla Recreational and Bowling Club. The NSW Champions League is an elite lawn bowls competition consisting of 10 sides, it is an open event with the best male and female bowlers competing side-by-side in a teams set play format. Each side has three teams of four who play two nine-end sets and if the sets are shared, a one-end shoot out to decide the winner. 2014 marked the first year the Women’s Bowls NSW side competed in the NSW Champions League. As they finished 9th on the ladder, the WBNSW side had their sights set on not only finishing higher up the ladder, but also utilising the tournament to prepare the state team for the 2016 season. The 2015 Squad comprised of: Anne Johns, Kelsey Cottrell, Beth Quinlan, JamieLee Worsnop, Dawn Hayman, Claire Turley, Ellen Ryan, Kay Moran, Karen Murphy, Natasha Scott, Kelly Richards, Molly Wilton, Samantha Noronha, Natalie Noronha, Samantha Shannahan, Katrina Wright and Sarah Boddington. After 9 rounds of games played over 7 weeks, the WBNSW squad finished 8th on the competition ladder with 3 wins and a total of 51 points. Congratulations to Taren Point Tower who were the 2015 NSW Champions League winners after defeating the Warilla Gorillas in a tie breaker in the grand final. WBNSW wish to thank their Champions League squad for their hard work and fantastic effort throughout this season!

The day ended with the presentation by State President Robyn of a Merit Pin to a very deserving Secretary, Patricia Harvey, who is also Secretary of City West. In her closing remarks, President Rona thanked all in attendance, the State and District guests, the Executives of the Registered Club and the Men’s Bowling Club, sponsors, City West District Clubs and former members. As is customary at Leichhardt, this memorable day concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and We’ll Meet Again. www.womensbowlsnsw.org

Winners of the Northern Beaches Shield, Seaforth Bowling Club

NORTHERN BEACHES SHIELD It was blowing a gale, raining intermittently but the annual Northern Beaches Shield held by Newport Beach still went ahead. The sun did emerge from behind a cloud occasionally but most of the time it was cloudy and chilly with the brisk wind that was blowing. Despite all this, the sides from the 9 clubs that participated had an enjoyable day due to the wonderful camaraderie and the attitude that “we’re all in this together, so we might as well have fun”. At the end of the afternoon, players returned to the clubhouse to enjoy a much needed drink and the “gripping” draw of the raffle and the tombola while the result cards were being collated. The winning side of the Northern Beaches Shield for 2015 was Seaforth.

INCLUSIVE COMPETITION NORTH SHORE DISTRICT SATURDAY TRIPLES CHALLENGE North Shore District is committed to promoting competitive opportunities for women who can’t bowl during the week. This year a Saturday Triples Challenge ran parallel to our district pennant competition. It was restricted however to players who were not involved in pennants. More recently, and riding on the back of the successful Triples Challenge, a second Saturday competition was held. This event was a Saturday Pairs Challenge. The goal of the Saturday Pairs Challenge was to provide a rigorous competition that catered particularly (but not exclusively) for women who work during the week or who have commitments that prevent them from week day competition. This event differed from the earlier triples competition in that both pennant and non-pennant players could participate. We felt it was important that the women who can’t play during the week could mix it with the pennant players. The competition was open to all clubs in Region 15.

2015 AUSTRALIAN MULTIDISABILITY CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2015 Australian Multi-Disability Championships were held at Musgrave Hill Bowling Club on October 11 – 16. Australian Jackaroos and Bowls Australia staff Mark Casey and Brett Wilkie were in attendance and remarked on the high standard of games played. The NSW Lizards team, selected by Wheelchair Sports NSW, consisted of: Gilbert Hicks, Geoff Seton, Doug Lambert, Eddie Gollan, Ryan Wood, Brad Gilbert and were joined with Jo Hunter and Cheryl Benbow. Despite a slow start to the week, the week end had a golden tinge with Jo Hunter (Gymea) picking up the Women’s Singles title (combined B5/6 B7/8) and also the Women’s Pairs title, alongside partner Cheryl Benbow (Raymond Terrace). Beating off strong competition from a favoured Queensland contingent, the pair performed admirably, taking on all comers and showcasing the abilities which had seen them earn their place within the NSW squad. Congratulations to both Jo and Cheryl on their fantastic performances! Page 32

We anticipated that one of the biggest challenges would be securing green space on a Saturday at a time that is traditionally set aside for men’s bowling. A number of clubs have mixed bowling on Saturdays and others were very welcoming of a female presence on the green. Our experience in this regard was generally positive. Where green space was not available in the afternoon games were scheduled for Saturday morning. Fourteen sides entered the competition. Two pairs formed a side. The Conditions of Play limited each pair to one player who had played grades 1 or 2 pennant in 2015. Each pair played one set of 9 ends against each of the opposing pairs. The home team changed rinks at the end of 9 ends. The scoring worked much like a pennant match with one point awarded for each set won and 3 points for the side with the highest aggregate shots. The competition ran for five Saturdays. On the sixth Saturday the four sides with the highest scores needed a full day to play off in a semi-final and final. They were joined in the afternoon by the other sides who enjoyed a carnival type afternoon. The competition concluded with refreshments beautifully hosted by Lane Cove and the presentation of the inaugural trophy to Neutral Bay. Feedback from the players was very positive and with some ‘tweaking’ to take on board players’ feedback it is hoped that this event will become a regular feature of Region 15’s bowling calendar. All bowlers are seniors, over the age of 60! The Lynn Smith Over 60’s Ladies Pairs Classic was in its 9th year. Lynn Smith, now an incomplete paraplegic, is the convenor of the Classic with Lesley Coombes as Secretary. Elizabeth McFarland (Bankstown Sports) organised the compilation of results and Mark Galvin (Lantern Club) was the Tournament Director. Margaret Wicks, 13 and 14 Region Representative and George Bousamra from Lakemba Bowling Club Benevolent Foundation presented prizes to the winners. One of Dural Country Club’s popular bowlers, Joan Brennan was recently interviewed at the club by Channel 7’s medical director, Dr Andrew Rochford, after her successful radical cataract surgery where her affected lenses were replaced with magnifying lenses. Dr Rochford came to the Dural Country Club to see her playing bowls with her improved vision. The programme was shown and illustrated well the results of the procedure. It is a promising new process to maximise the remaining sight of people with Macular Degeneration and Joan is delighted that she can read again, see the jack on the bowling green and carry on with her charity work. She will be forever grateful to Dr Chiandra Bala for his research and the surgery and glad that she has been able to publicise his pioneering work.

REGION 1 INTER DISTRICT SHIELD CHALLENGE The annual Inter District Challenge between Clarence River, Mid North Coast, Northern Rivers and Tweed Byron Districts was scheduled to be conducted at Cabarita Beach Bowling Club, September 17-18. In a tournament formulated on 3 games of 15 ends, with 8 teams of 4 players from each District, the competition is quite fierce on the greens. Back in the club house, however, the friendship and camaraderie was a sight to behold as the contestants greeted old friends and made new ones. Round One, Thursday pm, had the ladies contending with cold winds under overcast skies and the odd shower just to make sure all were uncomfortable. Not at all the “beautiful one day, perfect the next” conditions that were hoped for. Nevertheless, the battle began. Very close scoring ensued across the 16 rinks of play with CRD and TBD being the most successful in this round. Scoring at the end of day one was MNC 3–1: CRD 5+1; NRD 2.5-20; and TBD 5.5+20. A good early result for the Tweed Byron and Clarence River girls. Round Two, Friday am and the players were greeted with blue skies and brilliant sunshine (Hoorah!) as they descended onto the greens. Unfortunately with only 3-4 ends to complete the round, old Huey came along dumping continuous loads of H20 which resulted in flooding the greens. With no relief from the drenching conditions apparent, the agonising decision to abandon the tournament was made. In a light hearted moment, Chair of Match suggested that, perhaps, the challenge could be converted to a swimming comp; e.g. a 40 metre breaststroke dash up the greens, in age groups, of course - a suggestion that was graciously declined! With a no result declared, Tweed Byron District, the previous winners of this comp, will retain the shield, but it will not be engraved. So, let us now all look forward to the 2016 Challenge.

CENTENARIANS TROPHY & GALA DAY With 16 bowling clubs in Sydney that are 99 years or older, Mosman Bowling Club initiated and hosted the inaugural event, Centenarians Trophy and Gala Day which took place on October 25. 14 of these clubs were in attendance: Balmain (1880), Manly (1883), North Sydney (1888), Ashfield (1889), Waverley (1893), Randwick (1894), Neutral Bay (1898), Chatswood (1900), Hunters Hill (1901), Mosman (1902), Warringah (1903), Warrawee (1907), Beecroft (1913), Killara (1916). Centenarians unable to participate were Pratten Park (1914) and Gladstone Park (1898). The opening ceremony included a parade of participants – some of whom were dressed in period costume – lead by a piper, official welcome by President of Mosman BC Steven Lewis, a large display of memorabilia, lunch and games of three bowl, mixed triples were played. 15 Club Presidents were also in attendance as well as representatives from the Boards of Bowls NSW (Bob Moran) and Women’s Bowls NSW (Sue O’Keefe). The trophy was won by Waverley, beating Beecroft by 1 point. The 2016 Centenarians Trophy and Gala Day will be hosted at Killara, which also coincides with their 100th anniversary. A great day was had by all, with anticipation that the event will grow as more clubs reach their 100th anniversary milestone.

However, a special winning foursome did emerge from the crowd and an impromptu presentation was made to a wonderful team from Mid North Coast who, in Round 1, scored an elusive “8” in their game against a Clarence River team. Rhonda Riley, Lee North and Denise Hargreaves came in as reserves at the last minute in a team skipped by Judy Monks and pulled off this fantastic feat. Thanks to the overnight manufacturing skills of a Tweed Byron member, the ladies were presented with “8” Pins in a ceremony conducted by Region One Representative, Judy Padgen. Congratulations girls, on a great achievement. Page 34

NSW EDUCATION BOWLERS V THE QUEENSLAND TEACHERS This year marked the 58th annual test series between NSW Education Bowlers and the Queensland Teachers. At the end of September, thirty Queenslanders ventured south of the border, bringing the trophies they won last year. Day one, held at Dural Country Club was a social day. It was the day to check out the opposition’s strengths. The first test day, held at West Pennant Hills BC, ended with a comfortable win to NSW. On the second day, held at Pennant Hills BC, NSW again carried the day. On the third day, held at Carlingford BC, Sydney turned on a picture perfect day that inspired NSW to win again. NSW Education Bowling Club President, Wendy Herbert gladly accepted the Pizzey Rose Bowl and Mackie Pennant, the Don Ross Shield and the Past President’s Trophy – a clean sweep to NSW. The four days of fun, friendship and good bowling ended with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and promises to travel to Queensland next year for the 59th test series - and then bring the trophies back to NSW.

STRECKBEIN BAYLISS TROPHY BETWEEN CITY WEST AND LANSDOWNE DISTRICTS Congratulations to Lansdowne District on winning the 2015 Streckbein Bayliss Trophy. City West DWBA Vice President, Rona Rodwell presented the trophy to Lansdowne DWBA President, Barbara Munro. Each year since 2001, City West and Lansdowne Districts have played the Streckbein Bayliss tournament which was established by two friends, Betty Streckbein and Vana Bayliss (now Ohmsen). Betty and Vana commenced bowling in City West clubs before they moved to the Lansdowne District. They identified a need for a tournament to build connections between the two districts. Their goal was to have a tournament for the up and coming players. Therefore, there are no State or Grade 1 pennant players and each team must have an under five years player. Betty is no longer playing and Vana plays for Merrylands WBC. This year the tournament was played on a Sunday to allow working women to participate.

// District & Association News BEGA-IMLAY DISTRICT – FAYE SPROATES SHIELD Bega-Imlay District Women’s Bowling Association’s annual event for novice bowlers, the Faye Sproates Shield, was decided in August 2015. The final was played in perfect conditions with Kristine Martin from Merimbula taking out the title. The runner-up was Dianne Smith from Tura Beach. Both girls kept a good standard of play throughout the match. Quite often Dianne held more than one shot, only to have Kristine come in with her last bowl to claim the end. After 26 ends, Dianne made a comeback to be 3 down to Kristine’s 23. Dianne then added 3 more shots to be 23 to Kristine’s 24, when Kristine nailed the jack to win 25-23. The Faye Sproates Shield is open to District members who have been playing less than three years, although they cannot have won any singles event in that time. It has been contested since 1977 and has become a very friendly introduction for new bowlers to compete in District women’s bowling events. // District & Association News

REGIONAL NEWS REGION 13 V REGION 14 Players and supporters from Regions 13 and 14 gathered at Moorefield Bowls Club in Kogarah on September 21, 2015 for this annual contest. The day commenced with morning tea and a gathering for photographs. It was obvious at this early stage that there was a very friendly atmosphere about the green and that the actual game of bowls might be secondary to fun and friendship. Scores progressed slowly as players adjusted to the playing conditions. By the time the lunch break was taken Region 13 had opened a big lead on the scoreboard. Region 13: 108 shots to Region 14: 63 shorts

After a short break players returned to the green with renewed enthusiasm and whilst the laughter grew louder the games got closer with Region 13 at the end of this session holding 80 shots to the 68 shots of Region 14.

1

During the closing activities for the day it was agreed that the game of bowls had been the winner with good sportsmanship and friendship being the real winners. Regional Representative Margaret Wicks then had the task of presenting the trophy to Region 13 – the first time they had won the trophy in five years. Players and visitors were exhorted to travel home safely and to unite again in 2016 in Region 14 for the next battle.

// District & Association News REGIONS 13 & 14 V REGIONS 15 & 16 Representatives of Regions 13, 14, 15, and 16 gathered at Bankstown Sports Bowling Club on July 24, 2015, to contest this biannual competition. The mother club – Bankstown Sports Club assisted in many ways with particular emphasis on parking positions and the transportation of players between the two clubs. After a great morning tea the players moved to the green for team photographs and then to commence play. Even at this early stage a high level of good friendship was being displayed and there was much laughter as old friends shared news and new friendships were made. It seemed that playing bowls was not the main purpose of the day. Eventually bowls become important and some very interesting games developed with little separating the sides at the lunch break. Regions 13 and 14 were leading 95 to 84 shots.

As is often the case after an enjoyable luncheon, there was a very slow start to the afternoon play. However, success became a serious aim of the players from Regions 15 and 16 with players exhorting each other to produce a greater effort. At the close of play Regions 15 and 16 were the overall winners of the day with 172 shots to 164 shots.

1

Regional Representative Margaret Brady accepted the trophy along with strict instructions to forward the result to Regional Representative Barbara Hazeltine who was still away on the other side of the world. Whilst this contest only occurs every second year it is a keenly sought after trophy and all players look forward to the next event.
