State President – Robyn Procter It is with great pleasure that I present the Annual Report of Women's Bowls NSW for 2014-2015. Throughout the year the Association has continued to work for the benefit of its members and the sport of bowls - again, a year of many changes. It is the duty of the WBNSW Board to plan for the future and to initiate change in order for women's bowls to improve, as well as provide benefits that will strengthen our players and their respective clubs. The Board has continued to address the many challenges that have arisen as well as adhering to the principles of good governance. A new State event - Mixed Pairs - yet to be played and won, has been introduced. Recognised as a State Championship, the winners at Region level will contest the final to be played during October 2015 at Tuncurry. As a further initiative to generate additional interest in competitive bowls, WBNSW announced the introduction of a Senior Pairs Championship for 2016 to run parallel with the Open State Pairs at the State Championships. Our new-look magazine Bowls Matters continues to impress our many readers including those interstate. The regular E-News, the Association's commitment to meet with our members at Forums in a number of special areas, and where major State events have been held, have all contributed to providing the necessary information and successful interaction required by our members. During this year forums have been held in Sydney, Armidale, Merimbula, Alstonville and Port Macquarie. At our Annual General Meeting last year, the Board welcomed new Director Eunice ‘Topsy’ Roberts, a member of Kew Women's Bowling Club. It is most satisfying to now have three country Directors, all from very different areas with equally different backgrounds. The Board is indeed extremely thankful to have Finance Director - Anne Emms! Her professionalism and knowledge in the financial area have proved to be invaluable and her fellow Directors are indebted to her for her contribution as Finance Director. In this Annual Report you will find detailed accounts and a report from Finance Director Anne. Throughout the year the Committees have worked closely with the Board and their dedication to WBNSW must be recognised. Without the passion and commitment of everyone involved, the women's bowling community would be a very different one and while our numbers have grown recently, our organisation continues to require the valuable time and expertise of many of our members as volunteers in special areas such as umpiring, selection and constitution. Our State squads continue to give outstanding performances whenever they have been asked to represent New South Wales. The Senior Side (Over 60s) excelled at the National Tournament at Tweed Heads earning the Silver Medal, the New South Wales Open Side made a clean sweep at the Australian Sides Championship and etched their name into the history books as the first State or Territory to record four consecutive Marj Morris Trophy wins in the 26 year event history. The Association sincerely thanks Coach/Selector Gary Willis and State Side Manager Joan Thomas for their dedication and support. After a break of two years the most anticipated event on our calendar, the State Carnival, returned to the beautiful Port Macquarie-Hastings region during May. Once again it was a great success with almost 900 players, some from interstate, and countless spectators expecting to play and watch the best bowls on the east coast. The Carnival cannot be staged without the support of the District and Clubs, my sincere thanks to District President Diana Upcroft and District Secretary Carole Graham for their marvellous assistance and co-operation in ensuring the success of a most important event. To each of the participating clubs in the region, your involvement in welcoming the players, officials and spectators played a huge part in the Carnival's success. A sincere thank you to all the club members for WBNSW Annual Report 2014-2015

their commitment and time given during the Carnival week, and congratulations to our Match Committee - Pam Hockings (Chair), Robyn Lewis, Jenny Palmer and Joan Thomas for organising a most successful event. Membership continues to decline, unfortunately this is the case Australia-wide, although participation generally is increasing. The Association is currently looking at options to increase participation in the social bowls area. As the Association Delegate on the Bowls Australia Council, I have attended and benefitted greatly from meetings held in Enoggera, Queensland, Sydney and Perth and reported back to the Board and members. I continue to be a member of the National Brand Working Party and look forward to contributing further to this group as well as working closely with our members to improve local and district challenges. As a Patron of Bowl for Others, I attended the annual luncheon in September held to recognise and present funds given by members to worthy organisations such as the Air Ambulance Service, Kidney Health and the Alzheimer's Association. Valuable funds totalling $20,000 were presented to a number of organisations, all attending on the day. WBNSW recognises the dedication and work of this hardworking group. Sponsors are a vital part of our Association and we are indeed very fortunate to have a number who are continuously dedicated and generous with their support. Our thanks to Bowls Australia, our major events sponsors Domina/BCiB, St Johns Park Bowling Club, Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club, Oak Flats Sporting and Recreation Club, Port City Bowling Club, Bomaderry Bowling Club, Cabramatta Bowling Club, Club Sapphire, Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club, Stockland Retirement Living, Port Stephens Council, Port Macquarie Hastings Council, Merrylands Bowling Club, Hunter Bowls, and Uplift Travel. Each year invitations are received by myself and fellow Directors to attend special occasions at Districts and Clubs. These visits are always an absolute pleasure for us providing an opportunity to meet our many members, join with them in the celebrations and learn about their individual achievements and sometimes the problems they are experiencing. Your invitations are always welcome and we look forward to meeting with you during the next year. The support given to me by the Board, CEO Nicky, committee members and staff has been most gratifying. My thanks to everyone for their time and commitment and in particular their individual contributions over the past twelve months, combined, the Association has benefitted greatly.

CEO’s Report – Nicky Bethwaite As years go, the most recent financial year was certainly a successful one for Women’s Bowls NSW. By any measure, the Association held its own, whether it is judged against other sporting associations, or in its own right as far as financial management or performance on the field by its elite athletes. And yet, the most important judgements are those given out by the members, the clubs, and the players who are the members of those clubs. Let us look at those perspectives before indulging ourselves in the other more obvious measures. The purpose of the association is to provide a structure within which the game is played – this is promulgated by providing coaching and umpires that apply a consistent level of education across the state, and also by providing top notch events by which our elite players can progress through the ranks. By ensuring a high standard of organised competition, clubs are similarly obliged to follow suit, giving all players the benefit of playing in expectation of fairness and true sportsmanship. After experiencing years of dwindling numbers interested in umpiring, measuring and marking, the most recent year has seen an extraordinary surge in volunteers taking up this challenge. Bowls Australia has introduced a streamlined and shorter training course and the interest shown across the state has been gratifying. Yet to be resolved is the philosophical difference between the different ways the men and women each run their courses, but I am sure that with leadership and compromise on both sides, men will shortly be able to accredit women and vice versa. A huge pat on the back must be given to Lesley Swales, Chair of the Umpires Committee, and Bev Mitchell and Barbara Stonham for managing the sheer volume of applications and organising the accreditation courses. Most of you know Kathy Chatillon, Chair of Coaching, and her ebullient personality spreading the joy of the game. As with the interest in umpiring, the Coaching Panel has been very busy accrediting a satisfying number of new coaches right across the state, particularly at the Intro level. New bowlers are often intimidated by the very basics – what to wear, what to do and when to do it. By accrediting club staff and members at the Intro to Coaching level, subjects such as risk management and etiquette immediately put new bowlers at their ease and enhance their initial experiences at the most vulnerable point of their introduction to the game, setting them up for long term enjoyment and commitment, without doubt the best thing for the sport as a whole. From the events perspective, the calendar is always full and a high standard is expected of our events and has been delivered. The Match Committee – Robyn Lewis, Jenny Palmer, Joan Thomas and Chair, Pam Hockings – have been diligent in continuing the process. New events struggle to find a place in the traditional calendar, so other formats are being trialled. Mixed Pairs will make its debut at this year’s State Championships and interest for the first year has been high. A brief look at other highlights for the year include the launch of our new logo to go with the name change from the previous year. The new state team uniform, generously sponsored by Hunter Bowls, is the envy of the other states and it was also pleasing to renew our partnership with Domina/ BCiB as our naming rights sponsor for the Senior State Team, State Carnival and State Pennant Playoffs. St Johns Park has also renewed its support for the State Championships, and Cabramatta Bowling Club has shown its commitment by offering training facilities for the state teams, both senior and junior. New sponsor Stockland Retirement Village assisted with the State Carnival Welcome dinner at Port Macquarie City Bowling Club and much fun was had at Bellevue Gardens Retirement Village as Kathy Chatillon took them through an abbreviated Intro to Bowling course during the State Carnival this year. From a competitive perspective, winning silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games was a highlight shared by Kelsey Cottrell (St Johns Park), Karen Murphy (Cabramatta) and Lynsey Clarke (QLD). This set the bar for a very high standard that was met by Jamie Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park) by winning the National Australian Indoors WBNSW Annual Report 2014-2015

Page 7

Championship, Kelly Richards (Raymond Terrace) by winning the State Singles Championship and the Champions League having a female team included for the first time. The NSW women’s team made history by winning the Marj Morris Trophy at the Australian Sides Championship in Perth for the fourth time. Carolyn Nelson performed well at the International Bowls for the Disabled World Championships by claiming a gold medal in the B6 Mixed Pairs and bronze in the B6 Women’s Singles. Back to making things easier at club level, several of the By-Laws have been relaxed by the Board, including the position of Patrons no longer needing to be non-bowlers, and that Match and Selection Committees may be combined, no matter what size the membership of the club. The language of the By-Laws and policies has been relaxed slightly so as to make them less difficult to understand, and this is an ongoing process that will enable club executives to follow their obligations with less stress. The historic merger of Mid North Shore and Lower North Shore was completed in December and by all accounts, they are reaping the benefits of increased membership and better competition. The biggest asset of the association is its staff. Many of you will have had contact with Selam Woldemichael with regards to the annual membership process and it is hard to believe that she is coming up for her 10 years with the association in October 2015. Selam is an absolute whiz with anything to do with numbers and her statistical mastery of the database has made her an invaluable source of information. Janine Kerr is also coming up to a milestone of 7 years with the association and has embraced all the auditor’s recommendations for managing the finances of WBNSW in a way that makes the accounts easy to understand and to follow. I have found Janine an invaluable source of advice on all matters in the office and I am sure she will continue to provide this strength to the other staff members. The Umpires and Coaching Committees rely heavily on Kate Wingrove to manage the paperwork and liaise with Bowls NSW to undertake the accreditation process for all aspiring coaches and umpires. She manages this with great humour and efficiency, sometimes under great duress! I’m sure you are aware that Kate is also the one who keeps us honest in the office with her extensive knowledge of the game and the office staff are always right behind her whenever she is competing, whether it is club pairs or at the Australian Open. Kate is also responsible for the respectful recording and management of the history of the association, a task that she loves. Remember that if your club or District doesn’t quite know what to do with any old records, they can be sent to the office care of Kate. The voice that most of you will hear from the office is Kylie Hartley. Kylie is not only our receptionist, she is also connected to bowls through her mother, Toni, and also by her employment at Moorefield Bowling Club, a very recent addition to the WBNSW membership. Kylie is getting to know quite a number of the members who call in with queries and is unfailingly helpful. If she can’t solve your problem herself, she will immediately find someone who can, as her philosophy is to get answers fast. Another success this year has been not only the employment of Ayla Karabulut in the communications role but also the continuing improvement to the magazine Bowls Matters. Ayla, along with the Journal Committee under the new editorship of Wendy Steyer, and team of Liz Whelan, Jackie Lewis and Jean Clowes, have made improvements with every issue, to the point where we are in the embarrassing position of having too much advertising. That is indeed the measure of success but the magazine will continue to devote the majority of its space to the members, as it should. Financially, the association has continued prudent management, with the majority of its income having been reinvested back into the sport as is required for a not-for-profit entity. Finally, I have decided to pursue different endeavours and have resigned as CEO from WBNSW as at the end of June after 3 years in the position. I would like to thank everyone for their help and friendship and will certainly miss many of you. I am sure the sport will continue to provide many hours of happiness for all the individuals involved. WBNSW Annual Report 2014-2015

Match Committee Pam Hockings (Chair), Robyn Lewis, Jennifer Palmer, Joan Thomas The last 12 months have been a busy, satisfying and enjoyable time for the State Match Committee. All events have gone well and we have been extremely fortunate that the weather was favourable for State events in the last year. Our sincere thanks to all venues who made their greens, club and volunteers available to us, which were a major contributing factor to the success. To all the local markers, umpires and others involved in each and every event, and the greenkeepers who assist us to deliver each one of the State championships our gratitude and you should all feel proud of your contributions. The winners of the 2014 State Championships, Pennants and other events conducted during the past year are listed later in the Annual Report and congratulations go to all players and teams and their Clubs, that enjoyed success at this level. The National Champion of Club Champions was held in NSW towards the end of 2014 at Taren Point and our entrants were extremely successful with Katrina Wright - Taren Point winning the National Singles title and Kay Moran and Karen Murphy - Cabramatta runners up in the Pairs event, being denied by the last bowl of the game by the Queensland entrant. Katrina will now proceed to NZ later in 2015 for the World Champion of Champions event and we wish her continued success. We have introduced a new State Mixed Pairs Championship to this year’s event and we are still to gauge the success of this event. The objective was to give players still involved in the workforce and limited with time and availability the opportunity to compete either at night or on weekends and their efforts to culminate in a possible State Title at the end of October at the Championships. Another initiative approved recently by the Board for introduction in 2016 is a Senior Pairs event, similar to the Senior Fours and we encourage all eligible players to investigate this event in your District. We aim to give as many opportunities as possible for players to be competitive and enjoy their bowls at whatever level they wish. We could not have enjoyed the success we have in the past year without the unending co-operation, support and assistance of the Office Staff, and we thank Nicky, Kate, Selam, Janine, Kylie and Ayla for their efforts. Thanks also to all Committee members who made themselves available this year for the 2015 State Carnival in Port Macquarie, allowing us to once again have Section Managers rather than Venue Managers which creates a friendly and personal atmosphere for all players involved. The time, effort and diligence by the members of the State Match Committee is not realised by the majority of the membership and at this time I personally thank Robyn, Jenny and Joan for their commitment to their work, and for making my position as Chair an easy one to fill. Pam Hockings Chair – Match Committee

Umpires Board Lesley Swales (Chair), Barbara Stonham, Beverley Mitchell This year saw the change in the way Umpires are accredited. We now have three modules, Markers, Measurers and Umpires. The Markers and Measurers modules can be done individually but all three components must be completed to become a National Umpire. To facilitate this new system we have seen the introduction of Umpire Educators in each Region. At the end of June we have 35 ladies who are now qualified as Umpire Educators. My thanks to Denise Huender for giving up her time to train and assess these ladies. The response to these new courses has been really great. The office has been inundated with applications, over 420 at the time of writing this report. Our Umpire Educators have certainly been kept busy. It shows that updating the system has certainly been accepted by most members. To our previous District Umpires Sub-committees, we thank you for all your efforts in the past. To the clubs who have made their premises and greens available so that we could train New Umpire Educators and also for the holding of courses, we thank you. To the local Umpires who have helped with the numerous State events throughout the year, a big thank you. Your services are very much appreciated. To all in the office, CEO Nicky, Kate, Selam, Kylie, Ayla and Janine. We couldn’t do without you. A special thanks to Kate who handles all the Umpire applications and paperwork. My thanks to the two ‘new members’ of the Umpires Committee, Barbara and Bev who have been a great help. Lesley Swales Chair – Umpires Committee

Coaching Panel Kathryn Chatillon (Chair), Deby Brien, Ruth Wood An interesting element with Coaching is it’s never dull or tedious, always another encounter and challenge, and this year is no different. I hope you, our coaches are happy with the way we have handled any situations that you have presented to us. Throughout the year we have travelled and met many new and experienced coaches. Many thanks to our club coaches male or female, who have assisted us at clinics. You all have that passion for the game. Continue to work with your members for success, and strive to do what is best for your club. Our Coaching Panel goes from strength to strength and it would not be possible without the continued support of WBNSW Directors lead by President Robyn, as well as Beryl Watson, who holds the portfolio for Coaching. Thank you ladies. I welcome Ruth Wood (Penrith) – who was appointed in January 2015. Ruth has the responsibility of looking after the articles for Bowls Matters. We hope you are enjoying them as we try to coordinate our articles with the WBNSW calendar to maintain relevance. Deby Brien, coordinates our Coaching Clinics and coaches. Our Coaching Panel is now at full capacity. I must mention Norma Barry, who travels with the panel for our country trips. Norma is well versed in all coaching principles, and she has been a great asset for our new panel members. I personally appreciate her loyalty to WBNSW Coaching Panel and giving her time to help. Our coaching numbers are on the rise and from June 2014 to April 2015, we have grown from 299 to 335 coaches, which is wonderful to see. The coaching discussion groups are working well, helping new coaches to refine their skills – we have a number of these groups that are gender neutral. They are working together which is a wonderful step forward for our game. The Panel is happy to meet your group at any time to help out in any way. The Panel has conducted a number of clinics throughout NSW - Double Bay, St Marys, Glenbrook Forbes and Forster and later this year we look forward to working with North Manly, Kew and Pennant Hills. Congratulations to St Marys, Forbes and Forster on making the Regional Play Offs for Pennants, hopefully our clinics gave the structure for their success. We have been doing clinics with Double Bay for three years and they are now reaping the benefits with their two grades making the State Pennants, and Clovelly also have made the State Pennants. One club invested in five new coaches, (2 women and 3 men). They have just successfully applied for a Sporting Government Grant to set up an Under 18 programme, one of the factors being they had accredited coaches. Congratulations to all involved. Resigned CEO Nicky continued encouragement for WBNSW Coaching, we are grateful and wish Nicky all the best for her future endeavours. The WBNSW office staff members always make themselves accessible to assist us on any occasion. Ayla, for Bowls Matters and web items, thus keeping our coaching members up to date. Selam and Kylie who are ready assist at any time required and Janine in finance, her co-operation for all our travel arrangements that make our trips to the country safe and comfortable. Kate has the responsibilities for the Editing of ‘Coach to Coach’, liaising with B.A., Bowls NSW and the combined Coaching Committee for the dissemination of information for our ladies prior to Club Coach Courses, Selection and Competition Modules. Our sincere thanks ladies. If your club is interested in holding a 2 day Club Coach Course – we can hold a course with five personnel, we do weekends or Sunday - Mondays, so as to reach working members and not to disturb the members playing commitments – please ring WBNSW for all information. This is open to all members male or female.

The WBNSW Coaching Panel strives to keep up to date with all the latest coaching programmes, so if you wish to have a coaching clinic, please check the web for all information or ring WBNSW and they will help you with your requests. Working with such a strong team only helps us to be positive for the development of coaching in our State. Many changes occurred during this year and I am sure more to come. Without our Club Coaches embracing the new format that has been presented to us by Australian Sport Commission and B.A., your WBNSW Coaching would not be as strong as it is. Please accept our sincere gratitude and with this type of continued fervour, 2016 will continue to see WBNSW Coaching being at the forefront of coaching. Kathryn Chatillon Chair – Coaching Panel

Selection Committee Gary Willis (Chair) Another very strong year for the NSW Women’s representatives both domestically and internationally. Far too many highlights to pick a favourite, however, victories by Ellen Ryan in the Australian Open Singles, JamieLee Worsnop in the Australian Indoor Championship and ultimately the Australian Sides Championship for the 4th year running winning 18.5 of the 21 games played, were all simply amazing and truly inspiring. Personally I would like to thank everybody involved in contributing to making our representative teams and players to be the best they can be. There are far too many to name on all levels including the WBNSW Board, Office staff, stakeholders, sponsors, clubs, families and friends as well as many people who have guided and assisted me behind the scenes throughout this most successful season. Most of all to our wonderful athletes who work tirelessly on and off the greens representing the state of NSW, their families, Clubs and Association with the utmost respect and professionalism, LETS DO IT ALL, BIGGER and BETTER, AGAIN IN 2016!!! Constitution Revision Board Beryl Watson (Chair), Robyn Procter During the last twelve months, time has been spent assisting clubs to finalise their Constitutions and By-Laws. There are still more than twenty clubs which still have not had the current Constitution and By-Laws approved even though emails have been sent out advising the clubs that they need to have their Constitution and By-Laws approved before the Annual General Meeting. Many emails, phone calls and letters have been made by members to the CRB for advice or assistance with constitutional or personnel matters. Some of these are member protection issues, the majority of which are easily resolved but some take careful negotiation to reach a satisfactory outcome. Many of these incidences often arise because of poor communications within a club, although some arise because of clashes of personality and are not so easily resolved. It is essential that all our bowling members are treated with fairness and respect and should be aware of their legal and ethical rights and responsibilities as set out in the Member Protection Policy. All Management Committees must be aware of the correct procedure that must be taken to resolve conflict set out in the Member Protection Policy. The Constitution Revision Board acknowledges CEO Nicky and office staff Janine, Selam, Kate, Ayla and Kylie for your continued support and dedication to the CRB and the Association during the last twelve months, it is much appreciated. To all the members who have contacted the CRB with concerns and questions thank you for allowing the CRB to be of help to you. Beryl Watson Chair – Constitution

Magazine Committee Wendy Steyer (Chair), Jean Clowes, Jackie Lewis, Elizabeth Whelan My first 12 months as chair of the Bowls Matters Magazine have been very rewarding and with the help of Liz, Jackie and Jean we have seen the magazine become the great read it is today. The feedback on the magazine has been overwhelmingly positive and that is great to hear. The Magazine Committee still sub-edit and then proof read the magazine. A magazine of this size needs a number of people with different talents to produce a quality magazine and my thanks go to Liz, Jackie and Jean for their invaluable help. A number of other people are involved with the magazine. Thanks go to President Robyn, Directors and Committees of Match, Umpires, Coaching and Social. The magazine would not be published without the help of the office staff, first and foremost Ayla who took over from Nicola and works tirelessly co-ordinating between Publicity Officers, Magazine Committee, Inscope Media and Ligare to make sure everything is right before going to print. Also to Nicky, Janine, Kate, Selam and Kylie. Bowls Matters would not be the same without the input of the members and Publicity Officers. Your club does not have to be a large one to send in an article and all stories are welcome. Remember your articles and efforts make up a substantial part of the magazine and it’s up to you to carry on the good work. A special thank you to everyone who have provided an article or photo to be published over the past 12 months. Also to the ladies who agreed to be ‘Meet a Bowler’, thank you for your efforts in letting other members know your story. Wendy Steyer Chair – Magazine Committee WBNSW Annual Report 2014-2015

Regional Representative Committee Eunice J Roberts This year Regional Representatives met in November 2014 and February 2015 and it was a pleasure at the February meeting to welcome Margaret Garvan to the fold as the Regional Representative for Region 13. Margaret is Secretary of Ramsgate RSL and has been involved in bowls since 2000. Lesley Swales, Chair of the Umpire Committee addressed the February meeting on the new form of Umpire accreditation, which is now aimed at competency, i.e. what you can do rather than what you know. It has become obvious of late that there appears to be some confusion as to the exact role of Regional Representatives. Administratively, the state is split up into clubs, districts and regions. The numbers (in 2014/2015) in each are – 472 clubs, 45 districts and 16 regions. Regional Representatives are appointed annually with the prime purpose to ensure that the communication from head office to the regions and districts is consistent with the Board’s policies and decisions. The Regional Representative should be a positive conduit for two-way information between State and Districts. Responsibilities of the Regional Representative include liaising with the Districts within their region and reporting on District matters at the Regional Representatives’ meetings held at least twice a year at head office in Sydney. A Regional Representative assists the host District, if necessary, in preparing and co-ordinating the programme for regional matches and play-offs and, if so desired, may be asked to present the awards. The responsibility for running these events lies with the District Match Committee, not the Regional Representative. WBNSW Annual Report 2014-2015

Page 16

Regional Representatives do not have an automatic right to attend District Meetings. Regional Representatives should meet/correspond with District Representatives regularly (at least three times per year) and, accordingly, Districts may invite her to a District meeting within these timelines, to report on relevant matters. Regional Representatives are not to get involved in District affairs and, where possible, it is preferable for Regional Representatives to not hold a position on the District executive as a conflict of interest may be perceived. At no time should any Club approach a Regional Representative with any complaint or problem: it is not the Regional Representative’s responsibility to get involved with individual clubs. If Clubs have any problems, questions or queries, they should contact Head Office, in writing, so that the matter can be resolved by the correct channels in a timely manner. Clubs should not feel that they are obligated to invite their Regional Representative to any function or event – it is not a requirement that they must be invited. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Regional Representatives for their interaction and look forward to further positive communication in the coming year. Eunice J Roberts Regional Representative Committee

Junior Bowls Sharyn Renshaw, Chris Green, Neil Bayo and John Rodis NSW Juniors have again had an impressive year with outstanding results and representative performances from many of our Juniors. There have been changes on and off the green in the areas of events, development, policies, high performance and participation levels throughout the state. The NSW versus QLD test at Toombul Bowling Club Queensland was the first representative match for the year. NSW retained their respective shields; the girls winning the series 2 ½ tests to ½ test and the boys series coming down to the last bowl giving them the win by ‘shot difference’ with both states on 1 ½ test. Following the Interstate series, the NSW Drakes Pride Junior Carnival took place at Windang Bowling Club. This new concept event was a great success taking the place of the NSW Girls Singles and Pairs event. Players had the opportunity to compete in age division singles for boys and girls, open pairs and turn around triples on the final day. Following the event, an award was given to the best performed player and to a player who displays attributes that NSW selectors feel represents the spirit of bowls (results below). The NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) Exchange series at Port City Bowling Club, was the next fixture for the NSW State Side. With a number of players having been selected for the CHS side, other members of the NSW Under 18 squad were given an opportunity to represent at State level. The CHS side continued their winning streak taking out the 2014 encounter. Nightcliff Bowls Club in Darwin, Northern Territory hosted the 2014 Australian Under 18 Championships. The humid climate and synthetic greens made it a real challenge for all players but they were very well looked after by the club with anything they needed at our disposal. After a mixed start, the girls powered away to take four medals from four events and won the best overall state. The boys fought hard taking two medals home and coming in as third overall state. NSW again had the honour of winning combined overall state (results/players below).

Page 17

The Annual City v Country fixture was held at Cabramatta in November. The girls this year were selected into two sides (blue and gold) allowing for more evenly contested sides. The event came down to the wire with the City/Blue side taking the series over the Country/Gold side in a count back of shots. Following the series the 2015 NSW State Squads were announced. A major change took place this year with the reconstruction of the NSW Under 18 Squad for 2015. Two tiers have been introduced; a top tier and a silver tier which will see more players being rewarded for results and commitment to the squad goals and values we have put in place. Taren Point Bowling Club hosted the first State Squad training camp in January 2015. Players in the top tier received on green coaching plus information on goal setting, etiquette, measuring performance and healthy eating patterns. The players also worked together on a direction for the coming year, setting squad values. The interstate clash against ACT was replaced by a NSW Development Series named after NSW Hall of Fame legend Brett Duprez. The series was contested between NSW Boys, NSW Girls, a NSW NTC side and a side from the Hunter academy. The event provided a great opportunity for our juniors to compete against some of the best upcoming players in NSW. The 2015 State Squad training program followed on from the new look 2014 program with Regional Training Camps replacing the Easter Camp. The regional camps are based in the North, South, East and West of NSW, target state squad members plus hidden local talent. The development and success of junior bowls at both participation and elite levels throughout NSW is only possible due to the continued support and contributions from all the event sponsors, hosts and squad sponsors. A very special thank you goes out to all individuals and clubs who put in tireless hours into making NSW such a successful state in junior bowls.

History was to be made with Jono being the youngest player ever to take the title. Had Ellen won she would have been the first girl to win a Junior State Singles title. Brilliant bowls were displayed throughout the finals with Luke Jones (Ballina) and Jay Bruest (Narooma) being defeated in the semi-finals.

Pairs The Zone 10 pairing of Sam Hatch-Caccoma and Mason Lewis claimed the 2014 NSW Junior Pairs Championship over Zone 16’s Jayden Gebbie and Dylan Skinner with a 24 – 14 victory in the final to claim the title. Semi-finalists were Ethan Mills and Ellen Ryan (Zone 12) and Luke Helson and Isaac Rayner (Zone 8). Fours The State Junior Fours Champions for 2014 were the Zone 16 team of Jayden Gebbie, Danyon Christie, Jordan Taylor and Dylan Skinner. They fought their way back from 9 shots behind to take the title 27 to 16 defeating the Zone 10 team of Jordan Piesley, Kyle Breese, Sam hatch-Caccamo and Mason Lewis. MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS Many of our State Juniors have taken part in tournaments throughout NSW and interstate with great results. Congratulations to all our NSW Juniors on their success throughout the year. A special mention should be made of the NSW players selected following the Under 18 National Championships Darwin into the Australian Under 18 Squad – Dawn Hayman (St Johns Park), Ellen Ryan (Cabramatta), Jono Davis (Dubbo Railway) and Dylan Skinner (Wisemans Park Wollongong City). Players selected must be age eligible for the following years Trans-Tasman event. Ellen Ryan, Dawn Hayman and Jono Davis gained selection into the development team to represent Australia in the 2015 Trans-Tasman. Another great achievement was that of Jamie-Lee Worsnop who won the Australian Ladies Open Indoor Singles at 17 years of age, being the youngest player to ever win the event. Jamie-Lee then went on to represent Australia in the World Cup at Warilla in March 2015, winning the Bronze medal. Sharyn Renshaw NSW Junior Coach

Over 60s The team travelled to Tweed Heads for this event where as expected competition was fierce and all matches hard fought. Game 1: vs Western Australia was a very difficult match. The games were neck and neck until the last 4 ends when a big surge by WA saw them pull away to win on 2 rinks and by 11 shots overall. Score: NSW 52 - WA 63 Game 2: vs Queensland saw a very different result. NSW played strongly throughout to win on all rinks by a comfortable margin. Score: NSW 80 - QLD 42 Game 3: vs Tasmania. Despite sunny skies, a very strong wind made for a difficult game for all teams, and at times the bowls seemed to have a mind of their own. Wins on two rinks by NSW ensured the win for us after a slow start. Score: NSW 69 - TAS 50 A bye in the afternoon allowed the team to take time out for themselves and to recommence the next day refreshed. Game 5: vs South Australia. This was a real battle against a very determined SA, however NSW was equal to the task and responded well. After an absorbing tussle we eventually pulled away to win by a margin of 19. NSW 63 - SA 44 Game 6: vs ACT. Our opponents got off to a flying start, adapting well to the gusty conditions, while NSW struggled to find any momentum. Games were very close but again in the last couple of ends ACT managed to collect some multiple scores and went ahead to win by 7 shots. Score: NSW 50 - ACT 57 Game 7: vs Victoria. A perfect day, no wind but very hot. This was always likely to be a hard game and so it proved. NSW struggled on 2 rinks but managed to stay close to eventually lose by a margin of 8 overall. Score: NSW 50 - VIC 58 With that loss we were sure we had lost our second placing to Queensland, however they also had a loss in their final game which ensured we retained second place by a narrow margin of one and a half rinks - an improvement on last year. Congratulations must go to Western Australia who were a powerful and well prepared team that proved too strong for everyone, finishing the series undefeated. A big thank you as well to the management and organisers at Tweed Heads Bowling for their efficient handling of the event. NSW Team: C. Gillard – Merrylands C. Kelly – Taren Point C. Bowl for Others Edna Arnold (President), Gladys Barnes (Secretary), Edna Arnold (Treasurer) We thank all the New South Wales women bowlers for their ongoing support for Bowl for Others with the $1.00 voluntary subscription paid each year. We also appreciate the extra funds received from clubs and districts, raised from charity days, spiders, wrong bias, in lieu of Christmas cards, and also donations from individual members. These extra funds assist in the yearly donation cheques given out at the Annual Presentation of Cheques Luncheon, to various Medical Research Units and the Air Ambulance Service of New South Wales. This Luncheon will be held at the Masonic Club of Friday, September 25, when a representative from each of the recipients attends and speaks on their current research, which is always very interesting. Many thanks go to our Country Vice-Presidents who collect the Annual subscriptions, also donations, from the Clubs in their District on our behalf. When country bowlers are hospitalised in Sydney areas we endeavour to visit them, if possible, and also speak to them by telephone. The Air Ambulance Service transports many of these patients. To those members whose clubs have closed we wish you a happy relocation in your new club. We thank State President Robyn Procter and the Directors of Women’s Bowls NSW for the use of a room for our Meetings, also, Chief Executive Officer Nicky Bethwaite and her staff for their courteous assistance at all times. Our best wishes go to Nicky who has left Women’s Bowls NSW, and our thanks go to the staff for printing the 2013/2014 Annual Report and brochure, on our behalf. These were sent to all clubs in New South Wales and not only to Districts, and we feel many more members are now aware of Bowl for Others activities. Happy bowling to all members. Finance Portfolio It gives me pleasure to report that the financial year ended with a satisfactory result with a deficit of $51,471. This was close to our budget forecast of a small profit in the order of $51k, the increased expenditure incurred related to staffing costs. It has been another challenging year on the financial front with low interest rates for invested funds and a continual slow drop in memberships, with a resulting reduction in overall income. We have continued to pursue avenues for investing funds this year, but given the uncertain financial climate we have decided to continue to maintain a conservative approach to investment of Association funds. We are continually evaluating that situation with review of our investments each board meeting and special Board planning sessions undertaken to formulate future plans. Revenue received to budget forecast for our events remains steady. This represents the results of a great deal of effort by our match and events committees to stage successful event around the state. The continuation of successful events planning helps to increase the profile of the sport and it is something that the Association wishes to remain focussed on into the future. The financial constraints on economic activity are still unpredictable and we must maintain tight control of the Association’s funds to meet budget expectations and keep the sport viable. Alongside prudent financial management, the focus still remains on increasing membership. We have increased diligence on financial control by putting in place a policy framework, including financial control policies and risk management criteria around financial activities. This will ensure that the governance of our finances meets all regulatory requirements, that financial control is rigorous and that there is a succession plan for future directors who are tasked with the financial management of the Association. I wish to acknowledge the continued good work of Janine Kerr, our Finance Manager, for her effective management of the Association’s operational finances. Janine is always willing and able to meet the challenges in keeping our books in order; she has responded with enthusiasm to any suggestions for change that the Board continue to make and has put forward ideas for improvement of our financial control systems. I also wish to acknowledge Nicky’s work in monitoring and revising the budget and her involvement in providing suggestions for investing and managing our funds. I would also like to thank all our other staff members for their cheery reception each time I come into the office and their willingness to help out wherever possible. In conclusion I would like to also thank our auditors, Pringle Moriarty & Co, for their help and support throughout the year. We present the audited financial statements to the Association for the year ended 30 June 2015. Anne Emms Finance Director

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2015 The financial statements cover the New South Wales Women’s Bowling Association Inc. as an individual entity. New South Wales Women’s Bowling Association Inc. is an Association incorporated in New South Wales under the Associations Incorporation Act 2009. The financial statements were authorised for issue on 26th August 2015 by members of the Board. NOTE 1 – STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of Preparation The financial statements are general purpose financial statements that have been prepared in accordance with Accounting Standards (including Australian Accounting Interpretations) and the Associations Incorporation Act 2009. The Association is a not-for-profit entity for financial reporting purposes under Australian Accounting Standards. Australian Accounting Standards set out accounting policies that the AASB has concluded would result in financial statements containing relevant and reliable information about transactions, events and conditions to which they apply. Material accounting policies adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are presented below and have been consistently applied unless stated otherwise. The financial statements, except for the cash flow information, have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historical costs, modified, where applicable, by the measurement at fair value of selected non-current assets, financial assets and financial liabilities. The amounts presented in the financial statements have been rounded to the nearest dollar.

Accounting Policies a. Income Tax The income of the Association is exempt from income tax in terms of Section 50-45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.

b. Inventories Inventories consist of publications, badges and assorted mementos and are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on an average cost basis and include direct costs and appropriate overheads, if any.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2015 NOTE 1 – STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONT’D)

c. Property, Plant and Equipment Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Property Strata title land and buildings are shown at their fair value (being the amount for which an asset could be exchanged between knowledgeable willing parties in an arm’s length transaction), based on periodic, but at least triennial, valuations by external independent valuers, less subsequent depreciation for buildings. Increases in the carrying amount arising on revaluation of land and buildings are credited to a revaluation surplus in equity. Decreases that offset previous increases of the same asset are charged against fair value reserves directly in equity; all other decreases are recognised in profit or loss. Any accumulated depreciation at the date of revaluation is eliminated against the gross carrying amount of the asset and the net amount is restated to the revalued amount of the asset. Plant and equipment Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis and are therefore carried at cost less depreciation and impairment losses. In the event the carrying amount of plant and equipment is greater than the estimated recoverable amount, the carrying amount is written down immediately to the estimated recoverable amount. A formal assessment of recoverable amount is made when impairment indicators are present. No impairment loss has been recorded in the current financial year.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2015 NOTE 1 – STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONT’D)

Depreciation The depreciable amount of all fixed assets, including building, is depreciated on a straight line basis over the asset’s useful life commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable asset are: Class of Fixed Asset

Depreciation Rate

Building

3%

Office furniture and equipment

20% - 33%

The assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed and adjusted, if appropriate, at each reporting period. Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains and losses are included in the statement of comprehensive income. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluation relating to that asset are transferred to retained earnings.

d. Financial Instruments Initial Recognition and Measurement Financial assets and financial liabilities are recognised when the Association becomes a party to the contractual provisions to the instrument. For financial assets, this is equivalent to the date that the Association commits itself to either purchase or sell the asset (ie trade date accounting is adopted). Financial instruments are initially measured at fair value plus transactions costs where the instrument is not classified ‘at fair value through profit or loss’, in which case transaction costs are expensed to profit or loss immediately.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2015 NOTE 1 – STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONT’D) d. Financial Instruments (Cont’d) Classification and Subsequent Measurement Financial instruments are subsequently measured at either fair value or cost. (i) Financial assets at fair value through profit or loss Financial assets are classified at ‘fair value through profit or loss’ when they are held for trading for the purpose of short term profit taking. Such assets are subsequently measured at fair value with changes in fair value (ie gains or losses) being recognised in profit or loss. The Association has not held any financial asset at fair value through profit or loss in the current or comparative year. (ii) Held-to-maturity investments Held-to-maturity investments are non-derivative financial assets that have fixed maturities and fixed or determinable payments, and it is the Association’s intention to hold these investments to maturity. They are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method. (iii) Available-for-sale financial assets Available-for-sale financial assets are non-derivative financial assets that are either not capable of being classified into other categories of financial assets due to their nature, or are designated as such by management. They comprise investments in the equity of other entities where there is neither a fixed maturity nor fixed or determinable payments. (iv) Financial Liabilities Non-derivative financial liabilities (excluding financial guarantees) are subsequently measured at amortised cost.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2015 NOTE 1 – STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONT’D) d. Financial Instruments (Cont’d) Impairment At the end of each reporting period, the Association assesses whether there is objective evidence that a financial instrument has been impaired. In the case of available-for-sale financial instruments, a prolonged decline in the value of the instrument is considered to determine whether impairment has arisen. Impairment losses are immediately recognised in profit or loss. Also, any cumulative decline in fair value previously recognised in other comprehensive income is reclassified to profit or loss at this point. Derecognition Financial assets are derecognised where the contractual rights to receipt of cash flows expires or the asset is transferred to another party, whereby the Association no longer has any significant continuing involvement in the risks and benefits associated with the asset. Financial liabilities are derecognised where the related obligations are either discharged, cancelled or expire. The difference between the carrying value of the financial liability extinguished or transferred to another party and the fair value of consideration paid, including the transfer of noncash assets or liabilities assumed, is recognised in profit of loss. e. Employee Benefits Provision is made for the Association’s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee benefits expected to be settled within one year have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled. Employee benefits payable later than one year have been measured at the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made for those benefits. These cash flows are discounted using market yields on national government bonds with terms to maturity that match the expected timing of cash flows. f.

Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at-call with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2015 NOTE 1 – STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONT’D) g. Revenue and Other Income Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised at the point of delivery as this corresponds to the transfer of significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods and the cessation of all involvement in those goods. Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest rate method, which, for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established. Revenue from the provision of membership subscriptions is recognised on a receipts basis for the financial year to which it relates. All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST). h. Goods and Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST receivable or payable. The net amount of GST receivable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or payables in the statement of financial position. Cash flows are presented in the cash flow statement on a gross basis. The GST components of cash flows arising from investing or financing activities, which are recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO are presented as operating cash flows included in receipts from customers or payments to suppliers. i.

Comparative Figures

When required by Accounting Standards, comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in presentation for the current financial year. j.

Accounts Payable and Other Payables

Accounts payable and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the company during the reporting period which remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability. k. Key Estimates Impairment The Association assesses impairment at the end of each reporting period by evaluation of conditions and events specific to the Association that may be indicative of impairment triggers. Recoverable amounts of relevant assets are reassessed using value-in-use calculations which incorporate various key assumptions. WBNSW Annual Report 2014-2015

Financial Risk Management Policies The Association's finance director is responsible for, amongst other issues, monitoring and managing financial risk exposures of the Association. The finance director's overall risk management strategy seeks to ensure the Association meets its financial targets, whilst minimising potential adverse effects of cash flow shortfalls. (a) Credit Risk The maximum exposure to credit risk, excluding the value of any collateral or other security, at balance date to recognised financial assets is the carrying amount, net of any provisions for doubtful debts, as disclosed in the statement of financial position and notes to the financial statements. The Association does not have any material credit risk exposure to any single debtor or group of debtors under financial instruments entered into by the Association. (b)

Net Fair Values

Methods and assumptions used in determining net fair value. The net fair values of assets and liabilities approximates their carrying value. No financial assets and financial liabilities are readily traded on organised markets in standardised form. Financial assets where carrying amount exceeds net fair values have been written down to the net fair value. The aggregate net fair values and carrying amounts of financial assets and liabilities are disclosed in the statement of financial position and in these notes. WBNSW Annual Report 2014-2015
