Since it was built in 1963, the Playhouse has been home to an incredible array of talented people, who have made theatre in the heart of Nottingham to entertain audiences from the city, the region and beyond. Today, in celebrating this significant anniversary, we are proud to offer a season of work that we believe lives up to the traditions of the last five decades. Whether it is a world premiere exploring the compelling adventures of a 19th century master criminal, Ian Bartholomew returning to the Playhouse as Shakespeare’s royal ‘villain’ Richard III, one of the best loved novels of the last decade brought to the stage for the very first time in Europe, or the final stage appearances of one of the country’s most admired pantomime dames, every play this year reflects our ambition to offer you incredible experiences.

Our theatre-in-education company, which itself celebrates 40 years of touring theatre to schools and other venues this year, is presenting White Peacock, specially commissioned for young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties and autism.

THE NEW PLAYHOUSE The ‘new’ Playhouse, designed by Peter Moro, and considered an exceptional example of British modernist architecture, was designed to be a transparent and welcoming building, where theatre would be available to everyone.
In 1963, Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company moved into its new home in Wellington Circus, and on December 11th opened its doors with a new production of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus. Directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, it featured Ian McKellen, Michael Crawford, and, in the title role, Artistic Director John Neville. Shakespeare has continued to be an important strand of our work, as typified

Over the last five decades, an incredible array of actors have performed at the Playhouse, including such notable names as Judi Dench, Timothy West, Alan Rickman, Leonard Rossiter, James Bolam, Hugh Grant, Sarah Hadland, Imelda Staunton and Rosamund Pike. Today, the Playhouse continues to work with a diverse range of talented performers on our main stage and in the Neville Studio, with a particular commitment to offer opportunities to actors, writers and other

NEW PLAYS The Playhouse has commissioned and premiered many new plays over the last five decades. Writers who have written for the Playhouse include Helen Edmundson, Trevor Griffiths, David Hare, Howard Brenton, Adrian Mitchell, Ken Campbell, Barry Heath, Stephen Lowe, Michael Pinchbeck and William Ivory. Upcoming new plays include Charlie Peace (see page 18) by Michael Eaton (Autumn 2013), and My Judy Garland Life, by Amanda Whittington (Spring 2014). 9 Jimmy Jewel in Comedians (1975)
Throughout the Playhouse’s history, productions have toured across the UK and internationally. Steven Berkoff was an actor in the 1963-4 Season at Nottingham Playhouse and five decades on his production of Oedipus will play at the Spoleto Festival, USA. Our work is also enhanced by co-productions with other theatres and companies. In 2011, the Playhouse programmed Nottingham’s first European Arts and Theatre Festival, neat11, which saw work from all over the continent performed across the city; plans for neat14 are already well advanced.
SKY MIRROR The architecture of the theatre was enhanced with the sculpture Sky Mirror by Anish Kapoor, added to the forecourt in 2001. The sculpture overlooks Nottingham’s most popular food terrace and CAST restaurant, bar and deli.

THE MEMORY CHAIR
In 1984 Kenneth Alan Taylor introduced pantomime to the Playhouse. This year Kenneth writes and directs his 30th pantomine, and his last as a truly legendary Dame, in the same title with which he began, Jack and the Beanstalk (see page 22).
If you have a memory of the Playhouse from the last 50 years then we would love you to share it with us. We are seeking to gather together a rich portrait of the experiences the theatre and its people have offered over five decades. Whether your visit to the Playhouse is your first or your fiftieth, we hope you will stop for long enough to share your memories with us. FROM PAGE TO STAGE MAKING THEATRE AT NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE Five free lunchtime events offering a unique insight into what we do. Have you ever wondered what a theatre director does, how a play is rehearsed, or how a stage and its lighting and sound systems work? Have you ever just wanted to understand a bit more about what’s involved in making theatre? In celebration of the skills and work of Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company, we are offering five free sessions, during five Friday lunchtimes throughout 2013, which explore the art and craft of putting on a play, for and with you, our audience. In just an hour, a director will explore a scene from a play or short sketch and invite the audience to contribute to the creative process. From how the actors should use the text, to their positioning on stage, the costumes, props, lighting and sound, the five sessions will invite comment and opinions from the audience, as we explore the way in which professional theatre is made in Nottingham. These sessions will be fun, free and full of insight. You can even buy a delicious sandwich from the CAST deli and bring it into the auditorium with you. Please book by calling the Box Office.

THE LOST PLAYS REVUE
Join us for a series of very special performances in celebration of Nottingham Playhouse’s past, present and future. In 2011 a short sketch, written by Harold Pinter for a 1960 revue at the old Nottingham Playhouse called You, Me and the Gatepost, was discovered at the British Library. The forgotten sketch – entitled Umbrellas and performed only once – had been left unread, unperformed and unknown for half a century.
Umbrellas was not alone. Many more ‘Lost Plays’ from early 1960’s revues were discovered, including works by writers including N F Simpson, Shelagh Delaney, Emrys Bryson and John Mortimer. The Lost Plays Revue will unearth several of these brilliant short plays, presenting them alongside newly commissioned sketches and songs, written by outstanding Nottingham writers – Andy Barrett, Michael Eaton, Stephen Lowe, Mufaro Makubika, Michael Pinchbeck, Deborah Stephenson, Michelle Vacciana, Amanda Whittington and Nick Wood.
The winner of our public competition – The Neville Prize – held for writers, who have never had a play performed before, will also have their sketch produced as part of The Lost Plays Revue. The Lost Plays Revue will be a revelatory evening of entertainment. It will also mark the official naming of the Neville Studio, in memory of ex-Artistic Director, John Neville.

CRITICS’ CIRCLE
The Mouthy Poets are Nottingham Playhouse’s resident poetry collective, producing exciting and inspiring events. So if you’re 16 – 30 and have an interest in the spoken word, the Mouthy Poets will help you create and command your words, voice and career.
Critics’ Circle gives young people aged 14 and above the opportunity to attend Press Nights and review Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company productions.
