NORTH LEEDS LIFE MAGAZINE | CONTENTS

Dear Readers,

NORTH LEEDS Life FREE AUGUST 2012

Recently I’ve heard of people drawing up plans for arks and making lists of who and what they intend to take with them! But wait ‘til you see – September will be glorious!

C O N N E C T I N G YO U TO T H E C O M M U N I T Y

We’re lucky that we have The Olympics and Paralympics to carry us through – especially as we have such a fantastic group of athletes from Leeds to cheer for. We talk to some of our medal hopefuls, a number of whom are already world champions in their fields. It’s unfortunate that many local events have had to be postponed or cancelled because of the weather, but people are battling on regardless. The North York Moors National Park is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a variety of events, including a dance performance in a giant bubble. They may need to supply bubbles for the audience too!

LEEDS OLYMPIC ATHLETES GO FOR GOLD!

Also in this issue, Rawdon Billing Action Group holds its first public meeting, designed to garner support for its campaign against development of this treasured piece of Green Belt. Ilkley Brewery wins a prestigious business award; and it’s time once again for the Leeds International Piano Competition. Its founder, Dame Fanny Waterman, tells us the entrants this year are ‘outstanding’.

Rawdon Billing is under critical threat from development to meet Leeds City Council’s housing and employment targets. It is currently on the open market as a potential development site and, despite being designated Green Belt, its status is now threatened. The potential loss of such a significant and well utilised green asset would be a huge loss to the local community. The Billing is used by schools, churches hold services here, fishermen use both lakes, and there is a model boat club. People fly kites, sledge, make dens, picnic and pick blackberries. It is cherished by bird watchers, dog walkers, artists, photographers, writers, and people who simply enjoy the views, peace and open space, and the farmland provides a living for local farmers. It defines Rawdon as a village and serves its critical purpose as Green Belt land of preventing urban sprawl and the merging of neighbouring settlements. The views of local residents must be heard, particularly in view of the move towards localism and community engagement in planning process. With this in mind, RBAG will be embarking on a variety of activities, including liaising with Leeds City Council Planning Officers, building up technical expertise, establishing a website, publicity, and fundraising. 06 August 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

Feedback from the meeting will be incorporated into a report being compiled by the RBAG committee on the social, economic and ecological impact of any development, which will be presented to Leeds City Council. The report is part of the strategy to prevent the status of this land being revised in the forthcoming green belt review, thereby preserving use of the land for agriculture, leisure, exercise and enjoyment of the countryside. To get involved and for further information, visit www.rbag.co.uk or ‘Rawdon Billing Action Group’ on Facebook, or email info@rbag.co.uk. All volunteers welcome!

We train on Rawdon Billing all the time! It’s not only a wonderful open upland oasis surrounded by suburbia which is a pleasure to run around, but it’s a genuine land mark that can be seen from miles around. It’s development would be disastrous for the local community

Over 100 residents attended the first ever public meeting of Rawdon Billing Action Group (RBAG) on Monday 9th July at St Peter’s School, Rawdon. The Group, which aims to oppose development on Rawdon Billing and associated land, and to protect its Green Belt status, updated the community on recent changes and presented the findings of research undertaken by the group since its inception in March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

NEWS FROM YOUR COUNCILLORS Councillor Clive Fox Adel & Wharfedale Ward Here’s one for your holiday quiz. What do Queen Victoria, the boundary walls on Grosvenor Mount in Headingley and Mike’s Carpets in Armley have in common? Following the stunned silence it’s only fair to tell you that the reference here is to the statue of the Queen Empress on Woodhouse Moor, not the lady herself, and to Mike’s building rather than his carpets. No need to turn the page upside down to find the answer. They are all listed buildings in Leeds, perhaps more listing than listed, because they are all on the Leeds Buildings at Risk register. That list includes a total of 92 structures at risk from neglect or decay – ranging from Adel Reformatory on Tile Lane to sundry fords, weirs, lodges, mills and coach houses dotted around the city not to mention the splendidly named Clumpcliffe Gazebo in Methley. As councillors we get to learn an awful lot via council reports. Yes some of us actually read them. Better not let it be known that

Dr Barrie Hopson Chairman The Adel Association

One of the advantages of coming to our meetings is that you get to hear of major Leeds City Council initiatives in our community in advance. At our June meeting, we learnt from Highways staff that the Boddington Hall development is almost certainly going ahead, as the Council is worried about the cost of defending an appeal from the developers (with their record you can understand why!). One upshot of this will be what happens to the increased traffic on Adel Lane. Highways are considering putting in speed tables and even the dreaded speed bumps. It would be interesting to know just when we would have been informed about this. The meeting raised many issues about Adel Lane traffic, with the usual differences of opinion – but at least they are our differences of opinion. At the same meeting, Cllr. Barry Anderson gave an update on a recent briefing he had received in respect of the Eastmoor 10 August 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

the city council is the proud owner of no less than 18 of the buildings at risk. Reassuringly though, it says it is doing something about conserving many of these and encouraging the owners of privately owned buildings to come up with viable schemes to ensure their preservation. Arguably people are more important than buildings and yet another report tells us that, in addition to 58,000 homes managed by the council and housing associations, there are around 250,000 private homes in Leeds. Forty two thousand of these are in the private rental sector, more than half of them built before1919, with most failing modern decent homes standards. It’s estimated it will take £250m to bring them up to standard, and more to provide simple energy saving measures. It’s more a case of people being at risk than the buildings themselves, given the acknowledged link between fuel poverty, poor housing and ill health. But, back for a moment to Clumpcliffe Gazebo – the council’s report solemnly declares there are ongoing discussions with its new owners about ‘emergency repairs and re-sue’. Re-sue? You’d think their legal department would have enough on its plate already. clive.fox@leeds.gov.uk

Secure Unit – a new secure unit is to be built on the site. He explained that the last time the Adel Association made its views known on this proposal most residents present were in favour of the new unit. Barry advised that he felt that Council officers should bring forward plans and proposals for the whole of the Eastmoor site, so residents could see how the various parts of the plan come together. A public exhibition in respect of the new secure unit was held on 5th July in Adel Primary School. Cllr. Anderson requested that this be a pubic meeting where people could raise concerns but this was refused. However, he agreed with officers that the next meeting of the Adel Association would be given over to this subject. Residents will be able to raise issues and debate what might happen to the rest of the site. He felt it unfair to discuss solely the new Eastmoor Unit, when there was a lot more to be taken into account. By the time you read this the meeting will have taken place but please stay alert for updates. We do not meet in August so our next meeting will be 20th September. barriehopson@ashlingpartnership.com

Councillor Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward

I recently met with the Highways Department again about the problems with the Dyneley Arms crossroads, particularly with regard to the lack of a right filter for turning down Pool Bank. They informed me of the following: Consideration for an additional filter stage had been requested. Prior to recent improvements, the signals operated as a simple two stage junction for many years. In 2009 Dyneley Arms ranked No 22 in the ‘sites for concern’ list of junctions having 25 personal injury accidents recorded over five years. Accident records revealed that a significant number were associated with the right turn from the airport. Because the amount of green time available at a junction is limited, it was considered that only one filter light could be accommodated. A second filter would reduce the green times for all other legs, resulting in increased delays for other directions. It was agreed that fresh traffic counts would be done after the junction had settled down. The junction now handles all movements with acceptable small delays at peak periods, except for the A660 right turn to Pool. Whilst variable, traffic can queue here for three or four light cycles. As it stands, the options are to a) do nothing and accept that the existing scheme is the best achievable within current resources; b) Add the right filter arrow as requested; c) carry out major junction improvement, which would entail provision of a roundabout or double signal scheme. Adding a right filter could lead to other problems. Its detrimental impact is likely to be greater than any benefit. Major junction improvement is very costly and not likely to be deliverable. So, the current situation is considered to be the best compromise. The new scheme has brought benefits to most users. Evidence to-date suggests that the main cause of road injuries appears to have been dealt with. It is recognised that at peak times there is a significant queue for the right turn to Pool. However, detailed analysis of the site suggests that there is no practical way of accommodating an extra filter without significantly increasing waiting times for other users – in particular for the high volumes of traffic passing through on the A660.There were five slight injuries and one serious accident in 2011 and the right turn to Pool Bank does not seem to have featured in the injury accidents recorded. If you would like a copy of the full report, please contact me at barry.anderson@leeds.gov.uk

Going For Gold

Let’s Support our local Olympic and Paralympic Athletes

The Olympics are about to start and there are more reasons than ever to get excited about it. Not only is it right here in the UK – but we also have a fabulous team of Olympic and Paralympic athletes 14 12 July 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk from Leeds taking part.

Women’s Boxing finally an Olympic Sport

Lizzie Armitstead

For boxer Nicola Adams from Burmantofts it is a truly momentous opportunity as she will be one of the first women to box at the Olympic Games. Women’s boxing first appeared in the Olympic Games as a demonstration sport in 1904 but was banned in most countries for most of the 20th century. The ban was lifted in the UK in 1996. The first European Cup for Women was held in 1999 and the first World Championship in 2001 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Since then the sport’s popularity has soared. But It was not until 2009 that it was finally announced that it would be included in the 2012 Olympics.

I always wanted to be part of the Olympics. It is so exciting and such an amazing feeling

“When I heard Women’s Boxing was in the 2012 Olympics I was overwhelmed”, said Nicola. “I always wanted to be part of the Olympics. It is so exciting and such an amazing feeling.” Nicola started boxing when she was 12 and had her first bout at 13! One of her problems was finding other girls to fight. At 17 her talent was recognised and she was asked if she would be interested in taking part in national championships – she hasn’t looked back.

Fighting as a flyweight, she has been amazingly successful in the last couple of years and has a definite chance of a medal in London. “Normally I’m boxing abroad. What makes this even better is that my family and friends will have the opportunity to see me box here at home.”

And what does the future hold? Whatever she does it will always involve boxing. “I cannot imagine not boxing – I just love it with a passion.”

UK cyclists set to take medals

Britain has been doing fantastically well in cycling for some time. Now Lizzie Armitstead from Otley is joining the Olympic team. It seems just the other day that she was spotted by a cycling scout when she was at Prince Henry’s Grammar School. Shortly afterwards North Leeds Life featured a little piece about her search for sponsors to help her progress in her sport – well here she is! Today Lizzie is a world champion track and road racing Nicola Adams (left), photo: Kyte Photography

cyclist and a favourite for Women’s Road Race at London 2012 “I am delighted to have been officially selected for the Olympics for the women’s road race team” Lizzie told us. “I was really hoping for selection with the results I’ve been producing this year but I was surprised by my reaction after I was told – it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders and all the hard work had been worth it. I’m so excited and proud to be pulling on the Team GB jersey and can’t wait until 29th July!” Cyclist David Stone is almost a veteran – this will be his third Paralympics! David, who suffers from cerebral palsy, describes cycling as a source of freedom and enjoyment. He has raced all over the world and has already won Gold at Paralympic and World Championship level, taking Gold in both Road Race and Time Trials in Beijing. After the Sydney Games in 2000, he took a few years out and went travelling, coming back to the sport with renewed focus and determination. “When it comes down to it this is just another race that I’m going out there to win”, he said. “Recently, I went to Brands Hatch to look at the course for London. I had seen it before but not ridden around it. I was surprised at how rolling and technical it was. This type of course is suited to my riding style and I hope it will be an amazing event.” northleedslife.co.uk | August 2012 15

Leeds Swimmers will make a splash!

Leeds will have five divers at the Games - these are City of Leeds stars Rebecca Gallantree, Sarah Barrow, Jack Laugher, Hannah Starling and Alicia Blagg. Such is the success of the City of Leeds squad, based at the John Charles Centre, that the club accounts for five of the 12-strong Team GB Olympic squad. Harrogate’s Jack Laugher (17) broke his own British record on the way to winning the men’s 3m individual event to seal his place in London.

Anyone thinking of aiming for the Olympics should go for it and just keep working hard, It’s never easy. You just have to keep at it. But it’s worth it!

Hannah Cockroft, Claire Cashmore Nicola Adams David Stone

Hannah and Alicia are the first homegrown Leeds divers ever to compete at an Olympic Games and, together with Jack, are youngest members of the squad. Like David Stone, swimmer Claire Cashmore will also be taking part in her third Paralympics. Claire, who has just graduated from Leeds University with a degree in Linguistics and Phonetics, has been swimming competitively for 11 years. She won Bronze in 2008. “This will be so very different to Beijing”, she told us. “It will be a home crowd cheering for us and that support means so much.” Claire trains mainly at the John Charles Centre, which she describes as ‘a great facility’. In the run up to the Games she has had the opportunity to meet members of both the Dutch and Chinese teams, who have also been training there. She was keen to thank the City of Leeds Swimming Club, and everyone around Yorkshire for their support – including The Queen’s Hotel who were quick to step in and offer her accommodation when she had to leave her student house. “Anyone thinking of aiming for the Olympics should go for it and just keep working hard”, she said. “It’s never easy. You just have to keep at it. But it’s worth it!”

UK leading the world in Triathlon

Claire Cashmore 16 August 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

Of course, we’ve been watching Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee eating up triathlon titles for some time now. Just recently Alistair returned to competition at Kitzbuhel, having been out of commission for months with an Achilles injury. The brothers attacked the course with Alistair

Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee, Photo: Delly Car ITU

coming in first with a time of 1:50:13 and Jonathan only 45 seconds behind him. Maybe they could try and cross the finish line together in London! Seeing the two of them race is tremendously exciting. They have plenty of competition from around the world, but at the moment the UK is leading the world in the sport of triathlon with Alistair and Jonny for the men and Helen Jenkins for the women.

Suddenly The Olympics and Paralympics are much more real. The journey of the Olympic Torch almost whipped people into a frenzy! It was fantastic to be able to recognise the contributions and achievements of so many people as they carried the torch around the country. Now it’s over to our athletes and WOW! We have some great local athletes to support, don’t we?

Breaking records even before the Games!

There’s nothing like breaking records even before the Olympics begin – and Wheelchair Racer Hannah Cockroft did just that in June! Competing in the brand new stadium, and having missed her call and warm up due to an accident with the bus that was meant to get her there, Hannah went straight onto the course and broke a world record! She tried swimming, discus and wheelchair basketball before discovered wheelchair racing just four years ago (she’s 19 now) and she loves it. She seems to be bubbling over with equal measures of excitement.and terror! “The stadium was empty when I broke that record. It’s going to be so different when it’s full of people”, she told us. “The biggest crowd I’ve ever raced in front of before was 5,000 – this will be 80,000! These games are going to be massive. There’s lots of pressure but also loads of support.” Hannah is a currently a Double World Champion. She recently returned from competing in Indianapolis where she won both her races. After the games she may finally get the time to take up her place on the Sports Development Course at Leeds Met.

Rowing to victory!

The GB Rowing Teams are also strong contenders, with a number of rowers from Yorkshire. Debbie Flood, from Guiseley, will be rowing in the Women’s Quadruple Skulls. Having worked her way back from injury she joins her 2004 and 2008 crew-mate Frances Houghton in the equivalent women’s boat in which she won Olympic silver in 2004 and 2008.

THEY LIVED IN LEEDS

(Colonel) John Thomas North (1842-1896) Millionaire Adventurer – Donor of Kirkstall Abbey

Ruthless opportunist, lovable rogue, heartless swindler, generous benefactor – just some of the views of John Thomas North, who made his fortune thousands of miles away in Chile, but never forgot his home town of Leeds. North was born on 30 January 1842 at 7 Bywater Street, Hunslet, a narrow street of back-to-backs in an area of railway sidings, coal staithes, and huge foundries belching out smoke. His father, a coal dealer, died when he was 14 and his widowed mother took over a pub in Grape Street, where the family lived, among huddled terraces overshadowed by the vast Airedale Foundry (all swept away since in slum clearance). Nearby in Hunslet Road was John Fowler’s Steam Plough Works, where, after an apprenticeship, North found a job as a millwright, a machine engineer. He married in 1866 and began a family. Then, around 1869, Fowlers offered him the chance to go to Chile, an important export market for their booming business. He seized the opportunity for a new life. He stayed there thirteen years, soon leaving Fowlers and working for himself. He finished up a millionaire, mainly from the processing of nitrates which were then in increasing demand as a fertilizer. His multiple schemes included supplying fresh water for the arid desert area of the nitrate fields, building railways for transport, and setting up a bank to provide financial backing. A bold opportunist and gambler, he profited from the war between Peru and Chile over possession of the nitrate region by buying up concessions at a knockdown price which subsequently made him a fortune. North returned to Britain in 1882 to promote his business interests and with his brash persona, lavish 18 August 2012 northleedslife.co.uk

spending and gift for publicity set off a nitrate boom. People queued up to invest in the numerous companies he launched, following the dream of a quick profit. He was set on making his mark in high society, hobnobbing with royalty and the rich and famous. Known everywhere as ‘The Nitrate King’, he added ‘Colonel’ to his title by joining the local Volunteers. He bought a mansion at Avery Hill near London and spent huge sums extending and refurbishing it in spectacular style – his opulent lifestyle, fabulous parties and expensive sporting interests made him the media celebrity of his day. But he never forgot his Leeds roots and family and was always ready to back worthy causes, making substantial donations to the Infirmary and the Yorkshire College. His most spectacular gift came about in 1889, when he heard by chance that Kirkstall

Abbey and its grounds were up for auction and were at risk of being bought by a group of Manchester businessmen as an amusement park. He promptly promised to buy the Abbey himself, with extra land, and hand it all over to the citizens of Leeds. The purchase cost him £10,000. In return he was honoured as the first Freeman of the city. When he arrived in Leeds for the ceremony he was mobbed and cheered. His huge popularity led him to stand as Tory candidate for West Leeds in 1895, a campaign he fought with supreme showmanship but not the slightest concern for political issues. He lost by only a few votes. Colonel North returned to Chile in 1889, when British nitrate concessions were under threat from the nationalist president of the time. How far he was involved in exploiting the political tensions in Chile remains an open question. In any case he saw that the future for nitrates, particularly with the development of artificial fertilizers, was looking bleak. He quietly got rid of most of his nitrate interests and diversified his investments into a wide range of businesses at home and abroad. Suspicions and accusations of financial misconduct were beginning to beset him when in 1896 he suddenly died of a heart attack at a business meeting in London, after a lunch of oysters and porter. His death made headlines across the world. Today he is mostly forgotten (though he is the subject of a recent book) but his gift of the Abbey and its grounds – where he told people he had fun as a child, playing ‘kiss-inthe-ring’! – is there for everyone to enjoy.

HAND FASTING AT HOPE PASTURES In June, Hope Pastures Horse and Donkey Sanctuary on Weetwood Lane hosted its first marriage ceremony in the form of a ‘Hand Fasting’. A Hand Fasting is a marriage ritual based on an ancient Celtic tradition. It was seen as a rite of betrothal, lasting a year and a day. If all went well, after a year and a day the two lovers would hold a second Hand Fasting ceremony that would bind together hearts, minds, bodies and spirits for as long as love was shared between the two. Most often a Hand Fasting is held outside in as natural a setting as possible. The chosen space is decorated with flowers and foliage of the season, lit with candles and perfumed with incense, and the couple is invited into the Sacred Circle to exchange their vows. They gaze deeply into each other’s eyes and whisper promises as the officiator, priest or priestess gently binds their wrists together with a cord, signifying the tender bondage of their mutual commitment – hence the saying ‘tying the knot’. When the ceremony is over, the happy couple ‘jump’ the broomstick, the symbol of the joining together of

man with woman, to ensure love and happiness for their future. Food and wine are then shared with the guests to celebrate the wonderful occasion. Hope Pastures was a lovely setting for

ILKLEY BREWERY WINS LOCAL BUSINESS ACCELERATORS AWARD

Ilkley Brewery was recently announced as the winner of the Local Business Accelerators (LBA) scheme at a ceremony in London. Organised by the Newspaper Society (NS), the initiative is fronted by national ambassador and Dragons’ Den star, Deborah Meaden, and backed by Prime Minister David Cameron, Business Secretary Vince Cable, and CBI Director General John Cridland. “This excellent initiative shows how local papers can support and energise some of the brilliant new British businesses in their area and really help them flourish”, said David Cameron. “By fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, these papers are not only nurturing local talent, but also playing a key part in encouraging economic growth from a local level upwards”. Over 3,000 local businesses were judged on a series of criteria including the originality of the business idea, their ability to fend off competition, their finances and future prospects, their communication skills, their positive impact on the local community, and the potential benefit to the businesses of local newspaper advertising.

Ilkley Brewery directors Christopher Ives (l) and Stewart Ross (r), pictured with Deborah Meaden As winners, Ilkley Brewery will receive an ad campaign created by a top London ad agency as well as a year’s business mentoring from Deborah Meaden. “We’re hugely excited to be working with Deborah and gleaning as much knowledge and expertise as we can”, said Chris Ives, one of the brewery’s directors.

Also on the national judging panel headed by Deborah Meaden were: Helen Loveless, Mail on Sunday business editor; Stephen Welton, Business Growth Fund chief executive; Graham Goodkind, Frank PR founder; Al Young, St Luke’s creative director; and Lynne Anderson, NS communications and marketing director.

“The Local Business Accelerators scheme has been a real success in linking up new entrepreneurial talent with business mentors from the local community”, said Vince Cable: “Business mentoring is a vital part of starting and growing your enterprise as the advice comes from someone who has been there and done it before. Regional media can play an important role in forging great business relationships.”

Newspaper Society president Geraldine Allinson said: “LBA has clearly demonstrated that local newspapers have the ability to deliver a powerful boost to local businesses, encourage entrepreneurship, and energise the economy.”

“The top prize will

be named the Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Gold Medal in recognition of her inspiration, courage and hope for humanity

“The Leeds International Piano Competition is one of the great classical music competitions in the world” he said. “It’s a tremendous advert for Leeds and for Britain as a whole. Aung San Suu Kyi’s appreciation of piano playing is well known. So it is fantastic that the competition has made this tribute to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. And it is a fitting way to end her brilliant and historic visit to Britain.”

this special Golden Anniversary Year this is the greatest honour our piano competition has ever received”, she commented.

It tells the story of a doomed romance between a beautiful mermaid and handsome nobleman, Brand. Despite being raised by humans, Ondine retains the mysticism of her kind. When she falls deeply in love with a mortal, she is transformed from a water nymph into a woman. In time Brand grows fearful of the otherworldly creature he has married and finds himself drawn to a previous love, but he knows that should he break their bond a watery grave will seek him out. The production features the original music of Hans Werner Henze. The stunning sets and costumes are created by Jérôme Kaplan.

MOVING TO THE RHYTHM OF THE MOORS

This summer something quite breathtaking will be popping up in stunning locations across the North York Moors National Park including Rievaulx Terrace, Wykeham Abbey and The Moors National Park Centre, Danby. Terrarium is a new dance performance created by Leeds-based choreographer Simon Birch and is one of the highlights of the National Park’s 60th anniversary celebrations. It runs from 1st – 12th August with a mix of afternoon and evening performances. The performance takes place in a giant bubble, four and a half metres in diameter, enabling the audience to view the dance in relation to the surrounding landscape. Performed by two dancers, Terrarium is inspired by the beauty and wildness of the moors and coast and the changes that take place with the passing of time and seasons. 26 August 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

Composer Jon Hughes has created an extraordinary musical soundtrack, played through an ambi-sonic surround-sound system designed to give the listener an almost 3D sound experience. The music is based on a series of recordings made in locations around the National Park. “Our aim is to capture the audiences imagination by placing high quality live dance performance in unusual and inspiring rural location”, said Simon Birch. “We are grateful to the North York Moors National Park for providing us with this amazing opportunity to perform in the stunning locations and to be part of their 60th anniversary celebrations.” Tickets for Terrarium (Adults £10, Children (5 – 16) £5, Family ticket Family ticket (2 adults & 2 children age 5-16) £25, available from Yorkshire

MAJOR NEW PRIZE ADDED TO LEEDS INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION

A major new prize – The Terence JuddHallé Award – has been added to the Leeds International Piano Competition 2012, which runs from 29th August – 16th September.

Dame Fanny Waterman

The prize is in memory of a brilliant young pianist and past pupil of Dame Fanny Waterman who was 3rd prizewinner in the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in 1978 and who died tragically young, on the verge of a brilliant musical career. Members of the Hallé and their music director, Sir Mark Elder, will choose one of the six Leeds finalists to receive the award, which will consist of a cash prize of £5,000, at least three paid engagements, and the possibility of a recording on the Hallé label. More than 270 entries were submitted for the 2012 Competition, from which 80 pianists from over 20 countries have been selected to compete in front of an international jury.

Sir Mark Elder

“The applications this year have been outstanding, some of the finest talent the Audition Panel has ever seen and heard”, said Dame Fanny Waterman, who, together with Marion Thorpe, founded the Competition in 1961. “This will be a remarkable year as we will celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympic Games and the 50th anniversary of the world’s greatest International Piano Competition. We hope to continue to help aspiring young pianists at the start of their careers and the prize winners will be offered a number of prestigious national and international engagements.” The Competition is held every three years and the two finals in Leeds Town Hall are televised by BBC 4 and broadcast by BBC Radio 3. Six finalists will perform with the Hallé, conducted by Sir Mark Elder, at Leeds Town Hall on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th September. Dame Janet Baker, the Competition’s Patron, will present the prizes. The winner will also receive an £18,000 cash prize donated by the Liz and Terry Bramall Charitable Trust and a range of prestigious engagements with leading UK and international orchestras.

28 August 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

Over the last fifty years, The Leeds International Piano Competition has helped to launch the successful careers of some of the world’s finest and most eminent pianists, including Murray Perahia, Radu Lupu, Andras Schiff, Mitsuko Uchida, Lars Vogt, Louis Lortie and Artur Pizarro.

The semi-final and winners’ Gala Recital takes place in the Great Hall at the University of Leeds. HOME & GARDEN

GARDENROUND-UP By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural

...............................................

As this is traditionally the holiday month, the garden needs tending to so that you will not have too much hard work when you return! Providing there is no rain, cut and edge lawns a couple of days before going away and enlist a friend or neighbour to come in and water baskets, pots etc. Most plants will have set seed and now is the time to collect them and store them in paper bags or envelopes. Some plants need to have their seeds sown at the time of ripening to do well, hellebores are one of these. Fortunately there will be less weeding to be done as germination slows down. Give hedges a final cut no later than September. Prune rambling roses, give lavender a trim after collecting the flowers for drying, but make sure you don’t cut into hard wood. Layer rhododendrons, pinks and clematis to provide new plants for next year, and take soft wood cuttings from pelargonium and fuchsias. Sort and divide perennials towards the end of the month, taking out any dead, old sections, and re-planting the newer pieces, maybe placing some in bare patches.

JHG Gardening And Landscaping Services • Weekly, monthly general maintenance • One-off clear outs • Mowing and lawn restoration • Hedges trimmed, reduced or removed • Trees felled, shaped and pruned • Fences erected and repaired • Brickwork and decking • Pressure washing - patio & conservatory Gardens designed and landscaped All worked considered

Lift and dry onions, cut and dry herbs for the winter, water and feed tomatoes regularly removing yellowed leaves. This is also the last chance to plant colanchiums for autumn flowering. The planting of spring bulbs, especially daffodils, crocus, tulips etc. is best left until November. Wet summer slug damage has to be controlled by either beer traps or pellets, some may be lucky to have frogs, toads or hedgehogs around, which do their bit to keep them down plus provide a tasty meal! Hostas in particular attract slugs. I have found that watering them with Provado tends to deter them. Cut back perennials that have collapsed or spread over other plants – this encourages new growth and possibly more flowers. Keep ponds topped up with water and remove any fading flowers and leaves from surrounding plants. Thin out oxygenating weeds and remove all blanket weed. Carry on harvesting crops whilst they are still young. Vegetables in particular have a better flavour picked young. If you have a glut of vegetables, prepare and freeze them for winter use. A gardener’s work is never done!

Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon

Best known for its far-carrying, mechanical, churring song at dusk or dawn, the nightjar is a strange nocturnal bird.

It is medium-sized with long wings and tail, grey-brown in colour, subtly barred and mottled. Invisible by day through its superb camouflage, it is most often seen in flight at dusk, when it hawks for flying insects in buoyant and agile manoeuvres. Even in near-darkness white spots on the wings and tail corners of the male can be seen. In display flight he will clap his wings and give a nasal “krruit” call. Nightjars are scarce summer visitors from Africa, south of the Sahara, from May to September. They prefer forest glades and clearings and lowland heathlands. In Yorkshire they are most numerous in forests such as Langdale in the North York Moors and at Hatfield and Thorne Moors, lowland heaths near Doncaster. Preferring low undergrowth, nightjars desert forest clearings as vegetation grows over a few years and shift elsewhere to freshly cleared woodland. As a result, populations are difficult to assess but numbers are holding up well in northeast Yorkshire.

MARIE CURIE 10K AT BOLTON ABBEY

Marie Curie Cancer Care has once again organised its series of Walk Ten events at beautiful locations around the country this summer. The 10k walk and celebration at Bolton Abbey is on Saturday 18th August and will help to raise much needed funds to provide more free nursing care for people with terminal illnesses. Bolton Abbey is beautiful at any time of year, but particularly when the sun is setting on a summer’s evening. With exclusive after hours access, the walk will take you along the River Wharfe, through woodland and gorges, over scenic moorland paths and past the ruins of the old Priory. The walk starts at 6pm and afterwards there will be live music, picnics and fireworks to celebrate the work of Marie Curie Nurses. Registration is just £10 per person (children free) and you are encouraged to raise as much as possible to support the charity.

“Walk Ten is a wonderful occasion, giving people the chance not only to walk 10k in stunning surroundings, but also to recognise the dedication of Marie Curie Nurses”, said Kate Gaynor, Events Manager for the North at Marie Curie Cancer Care. “There’s a festival atmosphere, making it a really fun evening to spend with friends, family or colleagues. Last year, Walk Ten participants helped to raise over £400,000, enabling our nurses to provide 20,000 hours of free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes and in Marie Curie Hospices.” For further information and to register, call 08700 340 040 or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/

DRAGONS RUNNERS ‘BOWLED OVER’ WITH NEW MOVE! Dragons Running Club has moved to a new home at Yeadon Cricket Club. The move comes after a 10 year link to a local gym. “Our club was created by gym members who shared an interest in running outdoors and has grown to a membership in excess of 90”, said Joanne Wood, Chair of Dragons RC. “Our ties with the gym had become prohibitive, so it was time to become independent, enabling us to offer membership without the obligation to pay expensive gym fees as well. The Cricket Club was keen to accommodate us and we were delighted to join them.” Yeadon Cricket Club, located behind the Swan Pub on Yeadon High Street, is ideally based to offer members a variety of runs, such as a leisurely jog around the Tarn, road running through Horsforth and Guiseley or challenging off-road runs over The Billings and The Chevin. There is also ample parking on site, and members also

benefit from a 10% discount at the bar, with the option to sit outside on long summer evenings watching cricket to help aid recovery! Dragons Running Club prides itself on being relaxed, friendly and sociable. It welcomes all abilities, shapes and sizes and has several UKA Coaches within its membership offering guidance to everyone from complete beginner to seasoned marathon runners. They meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm and Saturdays at 9.30am. For further details, or to become a member, visit www.dragonsrunning.co.uk

REVIEW: ENCORE!! AT HEART, HEADINGLEY, 28TH JUNE.

To call yourselves Encore! could be a hostage to fortune, but not when the duo in question are Maggi Stratford and Daniel Bowater. The evening’s performance concluded to rapturous applause and the encore given was Piaf’s ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’. And indeed, the only regret I felt was that I had not caught an Encore! performance earlier.

Maggi Stratford

Brel and Piaf were the mainstays of the programme, which also

included songs by Georges Moustaki, Léo Ferré and Charles Trenet, as well as the lovely ‘Au temp des cerises’. Maggi’s voice effortlessly conveyed the passion, intensity and integrity of the material. Her voice is warm, beautifully pitched and full of verve when needed, as it was in Brel’s ‘Amsterdam’. She was equally affecting in the quieter songs such as Brel’s ‘Les Vieux’, a meditation on old age. Maggi was accompanied by the exceptional Daniel Bowater, who played keyboard, accordion and guitar, reacting with great sensitivity to every nuance of the performance. Sung in French, the songs were put in their historical and biographical contexts by Maggi, who gave a short, informative and chatty introduction to each one. True to their name, Encore! are a duo to see again and again. Stuart Fortey For further information on Encore! email maggistratford@gmail.com

SOUND & VISION Ansel and his trailer trash wife, Sharla. In order to achieve their nefarious ends, Chris and Ansel call in the help of Joe Cooper, a Dallas detective who runs a lucrative sideline as a contract killer. Joe requires payment for his services in advance but as Chris and Ansel are unable to pay until after the insurance settlement, he agrees to work on retainer and, in the first of the films many unsettling plot developments, Chris offers up Dottie as collateral.

KILLER JOE DIRECTED BY: WILLIAM FRIEDKIN STARRING: : : MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY, JUNO TEMPLE, THOMAS HADEN CHURCH, GINA GERSHON, EMILE HIRSCH CERT: 18 LENGTH: 103 MINS William Friedkin, best known for The French Connection and The Excorsist, has served up a gleefully nasty slice of southern-fried Neo-Noir with Killer Joe, with a screenplay adapted by Tracy Letts from his own stage play. In a dustbowl town in the Deep South, Chris finds himself in hot water, owing

a considerable sum to local drug dealers. Following another bust up with his alcoholic mother, he visits his dad, Ansel, and explains that he has learnt of his mother’s $50,000 life insurance policy. This, in the event of her death, would go to his younger sister, the Lolita-like jailbait Dottie (played by Brit ingénue, Juno Temple) who lives with

Bringing to mind the small town set modern noir-ish crime thrillers of John Dahl such as Red Rock West and The Last Seduction, Killer Joe is replete with all the twisting betrayals, backstabbing and questionable morality of the genre and is shot through with pitch black humour. It is dark stuff indeed. While never seeming too stagey, the film’s theatre origins are evidenced in good use of a strong ensemble cast. Relative newcomer Juno Temple has fun with the archetypal southern belle temptress role and Thomas Haden Church once again makes a convincing halfwit. Emile Hirsch’s Chris could almost elicit a little sympathy were it not for the trifling matter of pimping out his own sister and the ever-watchable Gina Gershon plays Sharla as a white trash harridan straight from the set of The Jerry Springer Show.

ROLL END CLEARANCE Over 1,000 ROOM SIZE roll ends must be cleared

Up tO Much has been made of Matthew McConaughey’s revelatory turn as Joe. Obviously keen to put his romcom leading man frivolity behind him and be taken more seriously, McConaughey turns in a surprisingly controlled and focussed performance displaying a range and depth hitherto unseen. His Joe is possessed of the courteousness of the southern gentleman but tinged with the ever present threat of violence. The film has something of a claustrophobic, humid feel and the edgy mood is sustained throughout, punctuated by moments of toe-curling discomfort (if you’ve ever wished to see Gina Gershon fellating a deep-fried chicken leg, here’s your chance), and the inevitable brutality is handled with restraint until the final act when all hell breaks loose.

They had the opportunity to practice braking distances, operate a driver simulator, and also heard from an A & E Consultant about operations that have been performed due to road traffic accidents.

The students learnt some very valuable lessons. They were shocked and moved by the testimonies of the visitors and it was an eye opening experience for many.

The event focussed on driver and road safety, aiming to create a greater awareness of the risks to drivers and passengers on the roads, as well as the effects and dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Students were given a talk by a parent who lost a son in a road accident and also observed a vehicle extrication demonstration by the Fire Service. There were further talks about the risks of drink driving and a Seatbelt Sledge demonstration illustrating the four stages of impact and the injuries that may be sustained as a result of driving without a seatbelt.

of football. The under 6s have played a few friendly matches this season. The picture shows one of the Under 6 squads celebrating after playing Pudsey Juniors.

www.pitchero.com/clubs/ horsforthstmargarets/

Boys and girls aged three to six (Reception to Year 1) are all welcome. The Dribblers meet Sunday mornings, 10 – 11am at Clariant Playing Fields, Calverley Lane, LS13 1NP. Just turn up and introduce yourselves. Children should wear trainers or football boots, shin-pads and, depending on the weather, they may need hat/gloves/rain jacket etc. (or sun cream if we get any sunny weather!). They will also need a cold drink. The emphasis is on fun, making new friends, learning new skills, as well as an introduction to the beautiful game

FEELING THE PAIN FOR THE SMILE TRAIN!

Earlier this year, Horsforth School students Matthew Kay and Daniele Palombo were the willing victims of a professional leg-waxing for the charity ‘Smile Train’. This is a train equipped with operating theatres and staffed by volunteer doctors and medics. It crosses parts of Asia and Africa, stopping at towns and villages so that children with cleft palates can undergo relatively straightforward operations which cost around £150. Repairing this fault can improve the children’s quality of life hugely. Rory James Hair and Beauty Salon of Long Row provided the expertise and equipment needed absolutely free, and Gazi’s Indian Restaurant in Hall Park rewarded the students with a complimentary meal and donated the cost of one operation. Over £760 was raised – which will allow Smile Train to provide five children with new smiles and a whole new life.

Holy Name Catholic Primary School brought a deputation of pupils to a meeting of full Council in March to request that the speed limit on the street where they live and play be reduced. The Council’s Executive Board agreed that a scheme should be introduced to cover the Silk Mill area and Tinshill Pupil Referral Unit and that Haven Chase should be included in that new 20mph zone. “This is an excellent example of young people having a say in their locality and actually achieving a result”, said Councillor Sue Bentley. I hope this will encourage more young people to contact their local councillors to bring about changes in their area.”

He gave a series of highly informative and entertaining talks, and held writing workshops for Year 7 and 8 students. SUPER SLEUTHS CRACK THE CASE! The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) became CSI Alwoodley for a day when the school opened its doors to four crack teams of super sleuths from local primary schools.

Holly Sugarman, Richmond House, learns fingerprinting techniques

The budding forensic detectives were called in following the discovery that the treasured Rose Cup was missing from the trophy cabinet. The visitors set to work without delay, using the appliance of science to try and work out whodunit. The young investigators sifted through the clues, conducting scientific analyses of fibres and powders and learning fingerprinting techniques. “This was a fun learning opportunity for the pupils”, said Biology teacher Amy Yuasa. “They learnt team working, observational skills and lab safety, and used equipment like Bunsen burners and microscopes for the first time.” The four primary schools involved were Primrose Lane in Boston Spa, Adel Primary, Wigton Moor and Richmond House.
