DEAR READERS, Things seem so up-in-the-air still. Who is allowed to open and who isn’t? People are desperate to get back to work and some kind of normality – but that damn virus is still out there waiting to pounce. One thing is obvious – we really must support all our local businesses and help people wherever we can. And, we are looking forward to being able to attend music and theatre performances again – but who knows when? This month we bring you news of a new literature project bringing Quarry Hill to life; LJWB opening a new pop-up shop in Oakwood; the achievements of Forward Leeds; and exciting changes at Allerton Grange Sixth Form.

Give a Little Back to Parks & Green Spaces Love Leeds Parks’ latest campaign is ‘Give a Little Back to Parks and Green Spaces’. Parks have been a real lifeline for so many people during lockdown – now they are invited people to give a little back for the many benefits enjoyed in recent months. It will take place mainly online and in some of the bigger parks over the Summer, culminating in a Love Leeds Parks Festival of free events and activities from 8th – 16th August.
“The past few months have made us appreciate our green space even more”, said Lynda Kitching, a founding member of Love Leeds Parks. “Life during lockdown would have been much more difficult without them. They are crucial for our health and wellbeing as they provide space in which to relax and exercise, spend time with loved ones and connect with nature.”
The campaign urges people to support the Council’s small grants programme, which will be distributed later this year to community groups passionate about improving their local parks. Last year over £23,000 was distributed in small grants, funding a diverse range of activity, including a wildflower meadow to attract bees and other pollinators; planting trees to protect a playground from pollution; and organising nature walks for people who are socially isolated.
Businesses, especially those close to parks, are also invited to support the campaign by holding fundraising activities over the summer or sponsoring the grants programme. More information can be found at http:// loveleedsparks.org.uk/give/businesses/

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford JOHN BARRAN (1821 -1905) PIONEER INDUSTRIALIST AND LEEDS BENEFACTOR Thousands of people visit Roundhay Park every year, enjoying its acres of green space, its lakes, woods and waterfalls – one of the great urban parks of Europe. It was John Barran who led the hard-fought, wounding campaign in 1872 for its purchase as a public space for the people of Leeds. He made his mark on the city in other ways too: as the pioneer of the ready-made clothing trade, which brought great prosperity to Leeds, and as the patron of some fine buildings which remain landmarks in the city today.
John Barran was a Londoner in origin, the son of a gunmaker. At 21 he left home, sailed to Hull, and boarded the new railway to Leeds, looking for an opening in this booming industrial town. Times were hard. His first job was with a pawnbroker and clothes dealer, but he soon managed to set up his own business as a men’s outfitter, with a shop at No.1 Briggate, popular with farmers and labourers coming to market. He married, and the family lived over the shop. Energetic and dedicated – ‘like a spinning jenny, in constant motion’ – he transformed his shop into an ‘Emporium of Fashion’, with a range from dress coats and satin waistcoats to moleskin trousers for ‘mechanics’ and sailor suits for boys. Alongside bespoke garments he offered affordable readymade clothes from his own small factory. Here his interest in innovation and technology came into its own: in 1851 he was the first to use the new American Singer sewing machines, making production faster and cheaper, and in 1858 he introduced the band-saw, which could cut through multiple layers of cloth. He had seen the saw operating with wood and grasped its potential. It revolutionised the clothing business. As his business expanded, he moved his home to Chapel Allerton Hall and his factory to Park Row, with his sons now as partners. In 1869 he took advantage of the scheme to improve and widen the narrow Boar Lane
by buying land on the new south side and commissioning the architect Thomas Ambler to design a handsome range of buildings including a splendid new shop for his firm: ‘Number One’ Boar Lane. He employed Ambler again in 1877 to design a new factory and warehouse in Park Square. Eye-catching, fantastical, with minarets and parapet, it is still there, an echo of Moorish Spain in the middle of Leeds. This imaginative building was planned with care for his employees – good sanitation and lighting, a dining room. Barran’s had a reputation for good conditions and fair pay, unlike many of the wretched, sweated clothing workshops elsewhere in the city. His business prospered, with a branch in London and new overseas markets, but he found time for public service: President of the Working Men’s Institute and of the Chamber of Commerce, a JP, a Liberal Councillor from 1865, and Mayor in 1870 and 71. In that year the huge Roundhay Park estate came up for auction. Many, including Barran, saw this private paradise as the ideal, much-needed public park for dirty, smoky Leeds, but there was bitter resistance on grounds of the massive cost and the distance from town (no public transport then), and Roundhay residents objected to the prospect
of mass invasion. Under Barran’s leadership the Council determined to buy over 770 acres of the estate, subject to parliamentary consent. Barran successfully led the bidding at the auction, risking his own money, even re-mortgaging his house. For a time he had to suffer insult and abuse over this expensive ‘white elephant’, but he foresaw that ‘future generations will remember us with gratitude as they stroll along the pleasant walks.’ His personal gift was a magnificent drinking fountain, recently restored.
Otley. When he lost his seat in 1895 his loyal service was rewarded with a baronetcy. The firm of Barran & Sons flourished and moved yet again in 1904 to a massive new factory in Chorley Lane, employing over 3,000 people (now Jacob’s Well). John Barran himself died in 1905, aged 83. Thousands lined the streets and followed the funeral cortege for this much-loved ‘Grand Old Man of Leeds’.
A life-long Baptist, he supported many good causes. He was a founder governor of the Yorkshire College (Leeds University) – technical education was close to his heart. So was the temperance cause. From the 1850s he and his family supported ‘British Workman’ pubs, offering tea and coffee instead of alcohol: by 1871 there were 16 in Leeds and the movement spread nationally. His kindness and generosity were wellknown, and his modesty too – when money was collected for a statue to him, he politely rejected the idea! In 1876 he was elected Liberal MP for Leeds, and later represented

Reopen, Recover and Rebuild Standing up for thousands of tourism related businesses, Welcome to Yorkshire, has released details of a collaborative recovery plan to ‘Reopen, Recover and Rebuild’ Yorkshire’s £9bn tourism economy ("http://www.yorkshire.com/ recoveryplan" www.yorkshire.com/recoveryplan) Working with local authorities, national parks, LEPs, businesses and tourism representatives, the aim is to preserve much-loved attractions, locations and businesses whilst keeping interest high in Yorkshire as a visitor destination. The reopening process is well underway for some organisations, whereas for others there is still uncertainty. The sector employs almost 225,000 people, with many more in supply chain businesses. Financial losses as a result of COVID-19 are expected to be well into the billions of pounds and Welcome to Yorkshire has written to central government on behalf of many small businesses such as B&Bs and hospitality providers.
“The team has worked hard to keep Yorkshire at the forefront of everyone’s minds”, said James Mason, Chief Executive, Welcome to Yorkshire. “Our recovery document has been created with short-term, midterm and long-term objectives to reflect the ever-changing times we are experiencing. “We will continue to take an organic approach to the situation and have held regular webinars offering up-to-date practical advice. We are working with public and private sector partners to ensure that the best possible guidance and support is available. We must also strive to support communities within the county to make sure their offer is attractive to new audiences with continual product development to encourage repeat visitors. “We are looking forward to gradually ‘Welcoming visitors BACK to Yorkshire’ when the time is right.”

Pubs A new grassroots campaign for pubs was launched recently. It aims to promote, support and protect pubs, and to be a real voice for all who love and value them.

Jamie’s Ministry of Food Leeds, based in Kirkgate Market, is celebrating ten years of teaching people to cook, alongside providing shopping and budgeting tips and healthy eating advice. Operated by the charity Zest Leeds, it is funded by Leeds City Council and forms the Cook Well element of the city’s One You Leeds project managed by Reed Wellbeing. Recently evaluated by the University of Leeds, the project shows that people attending the eight-week course gain the skills and confidence to cook from scratch more often, use less unhealthy food and increase healthy eating behaviours. “We see people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to cook and eat, overcome difficulties and find the confidence to make other changes in their lives”, said Matthew Newsome, Service Manager. “We offer something for everyone whether they are a complete beginner or just looking for some new ideas to feed the family.”
“A key public health priority for the Council is to help people lead a healthy lifestyle”, said Cllr Rebecca Charlwood. “Funding Ministry of Food Leeds helps to make this a reality. With dedicated and highly trained staff in an attractive city centre site, we have been able to showcase how easy it is to eat healthily on a budget - with the fantastic variety of produce that is available at Leeds Kirkgate Market.” Zest addresses health inequalities and social isolation through activities which improve physical, mental, social, emotional and economic wellbeing. The Campaign for Pubs unites publicans, pub campaigners, customers and suppliers. It exists to promote a fairer, more sustainable sector and hopes to see more pubs in the hands of people who genuinely care about them, better placed to serve local communities and with better protection against closure and predatory property development. The Campaign was formed in response to the need for a powerful voice for thousands of pubs facing the threat of closure as a result of the pandemic. It is also supported by the UK’s dynamic small brewers, keen to see a more open, thriving, sustainable sector offering them more direct access. A member of the British Pub Confederation, the Campaign will administer and support the work of the Confederation to further strengthen representation for pubs and publicans. The Campaign for Pubs costs £25 a year to join, or £40 for a couple. The Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield has commissioned three UK dance companies to create site-specific works for camera. Available to watch online, ticketholders will be able to enjoy two contemporary solos and a short ballet. Featuring choreography by Jordan James Bridge (Studio Wayne McGregor), Daniel de Andrade (Northern Ballet) and Gary Clarke (Gary Clarke Company) the works will be created in isolation, using video calling software, and exploring the theme of isolation caused by the international lockdown. They will be performed around the Lawrence Batley theatre building and captured for broadcast. “This commission gives us a great opportunity to create dance whilst we wait for theatres to reopen, and to reach new audiences for dance online during these unprecedented times”, said David Nixon, Artistic Director, Northern Ballet. "I am utterly delighted that we are finding ways to animate the Lawrence Batley Theatre while our doors remain closed by bringing together three exceptional,

While Leeds University Library Galleries are working on plans to safely re-open to everyone, you can enjoy the freshest talent from Leeds’ budding art scene from home – the annual FUAM Graduate Art Prize is going virtual! In its eighth year, the prize and exhibition, supported by the Friends of University Art & Music (FUAM), rewards the artistic excellence of students completing BA studies in Art and Design and Fine Art at the University of Leeds. Less than a year after graduating, Minhaz Abedin, who attended Sixth Form at The Grammar School at Leeds, has landed the top job at Future Talent, a charity that supports young musicians from low-income backgrounds. It was co-founded in 2004 by HRH The Duchess of Kent and Nicholas Robinson, both of whom remain closely involved as trustees. Minhaz is the youngest CEO of any of the hundreds of charities associated with the Royal Family. He studied at Lancaster University and has always been a passionate advocate for young people. He first lobbied his MP at the age of ten, spoke in the House of Commons three times as a Member of the UK Youth Parliament and addressed the United Nations General Assembly as the UK’s Youth Delegate.
HRH The Duchess of Kent, who taught music at a primary school in Hull for 13 years, said: “Minhaz has the energy, ideas and experience to lead on our exciting plans for growth, to ensure that we can give vital support to young musicians and give them a future with exceptional possibilities.” Now based in London, Minhaz is starting by opening a new office in the North of England and working closely with arts organisations and schools in the region. Literature Project to Bring Quarry Hill to Life A street literature project is promising to bring Quarry Hill to life through the written word this Summer. Led by Leeds literary collective Found Fiction, Street Stories celebrates Quarry Hill voices past, present and future. A team of writers will write ‘micro-fiction’ to display in public spaces, abandoned areas and prominent venues around Quarry Hill. The stories (created by Chris Nickson, Taiwo Ogunyinka, Sarah Whitehouse, and Mark E. Johnson) will take many forms, including vinyl stickers, wraparound banners and chalk paint murals. They will be inspiring, reflective and attention-grabbing, combining fact
and fiction and revealing a hidden truth about this historic neighbourhood. “The purpose of Street Stories is to pique the interest of passers-by, empowering and inspiring people through the written word”, said Steve Clarkson, founder of Found Fiction and leader of the project. “We want to bring Quarry Hill to life and encourage people to look closer to discover stories in everyday places – both literally and symbolically. Mikron Launches Fundraising Appeal for Fiftieth Anniversary The canal based Mikron Theatre is launching a fundraising appeal to help it reach its fiftieth year of touring. Having had to cancel its entire 2020 season, it aims to be back in 2021 with help from its supporters and the general public. Since having to make the decision not to tour, Mikron has been helping the community in its home village of Marsden and has repurposed its office and van to help the village COVID-19 mutual aid group, delivering hundreds of food parcels and prescriptions to self-isolating and vulnerable families. Mikron usually tours for most of the year on board a vintage narrowboat, putting on shows in unusual places like allotments, fish and chips restaurant, and Lifeboat stations. 2021 will, with the help of this appeal, see Mikron tour two brand new shows; Amanda Wainwright's ‘Atalanta Forever’ which tells the story of women's football in the 1920s, and Polly Hollman’s canine comedy ‘A Dog’s Tale’.

NCM Museum Restores Historic Winding Wheel In almost every pit village in England you are welcomed by a giant pit wheel, symbolic of its mining heritage. Recently the National Coal Mining Museum reinstalled a newly restored winding wheel in preparation for welcoming visitors back. The Museum’s 100-year-old headstock is believed to be one of the last remaining timber headstocks in Europe. Thanks to funding from the Department of Culture Media and Sport it has been able to repair it, including the newly restored winding wheel.
“The timber headgear dates from between 1905 and 1911 and used to be a vital component in running the mine shaft leading 140 meters from the surface to the coal seam. The headstock structure, which resembles a tower, houses the winding wheels which contains a rope attached to a cage which used to transport men and materials into the mine. By restoring it we have not only prevented further degradation of a historically important structure, we have also opened up new ways to tell the story of mining.” The new winding wheel can be seen from the main road, but the best views are from within the Museum. Leeds Playhouse Welcomes Government Support
Leeds Playhouse was extremely grateful for the recent Arts Council England’s support to cover its losses whilst the building was closed over the last few months. The Emergency Response funding will help the Playhouse keep afloat short term in this particularly challenging environment for arts and culture. It hopes to continue to provide high quality theatre and community engagement in the decades ahead, but without the means to self-generate the 75% of income to cover the costs, its existence is under threat. The Playhouse also welcomed the government’s announcement about the larger investment for arts and cultural organisations and is looking forward to further details to see if that can help Leeds Playhouse and other organisations in the city.

Meanwood Festival Goes Online Undaunted by having to cancel the annual Meanwood Festival, the team at Meanwood Valley Partnership has taken it online for 2020 with its own YouTube channel and Facebook page. Search for Meanwood Valley Partnership on YouTube and you will find songs and music, poetry (for young and old), photography and even a twopart story, ‘Barbie Goes Camping’, from a six-yearold. The videos, most recorded specially for the Festival, come from Meanwood and beyond and include a ‘lockdown special’ from North Leads Community Singers and a photographic exhibition entitled ‘Social Distancing’ by Lizzie Combes. Lizzie’s portraits are her response to the ‘lockdown’. She photographed friends she encountered during her daily exercise, or who had come to say a ‘physically’ distanced hi, giving her and those she photographed an opportunity to connect outside of the online worlds that had become the norm. She ran or cycled to capture some, and drove to others, once ‘lockdown’ restrictions had been eased. The portraits alter to reflect this and include people meeting in parks or sitting in friends’ gardens. A Breath of Fresh Air There have not been many upsides from the impact of COVID over the last few months, but one benefit for Headingley has been a big improvement in air quality. The absence of the usual traffic congestion has resulted in less pollution as well as a cut in carbon emissions. The transport survey Zero Carbon Headingley carried out in May showed that many – if not most - residents would like an end to traffic congestion permanently. The survey, completed by nearly 300 people, showed strong support for action to improve facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as improving public transport. The idea of a 20mph speed limit on all residential roads in the area was popular, for example, as was a continuous cycle lane along the A660. Zero Carbon Headingley are now campaigning for the popular proposals to be made a reality. Meetings have been held with Headingley councillors and local MP, Alex Sobel, where thorny issues such as a park-and-ride at or near Lawnswood and extending bus lanes have been discussed. A presentation was recently made to the Clean Air Alliance (which includes council officials, elected councillors and academics) who were impressed by the positive support for action shown by the transport survey.
The government has awarded funding for ‘active travel’ to local authorities as part of the response to the COVID crisis and money has been provided for a dedicated cycle lane along the A660, which should be constructed this summer. More funding is being made available and Zero Carbon Headingley are pressing for funds to be allocated to simple improvements, such as making main thoroughfares more pedestrian and cycle friendly.

Older People Take Action to Reduce Lockdown Loneliness

Older people in North West Leeds are leading a new campaign to reduce lockdown loneliness. Thirty members of OWLS (Older Wiser Local Seniors) are volunteering to make a regular phone call to an older person they haven’t met before, in an effort to tackle the loneliness caused by the lockdown. This ‘Phone a New Friend’ project sprung up in response to COVID-19, as many older people find themselves isolated with just the TV and radio for company. OWLS are asking 60+ year olds in the area to take action to reduce lockdown loneliness by joining ‘the project. Participants are matched by staff at OWLS, an independent charity based at HEART in Headingley, and one of 35 Neighbourhood Network Schemes operating in Leeds. By making a weekly call to someone they’ve not met before, older people are solving the problem of rising loneliness themselves. The calls are already making a difference and it is hoped that participants will meet face to face when it’s safe to do so.
According to the 2011 Census, there are 1,500 older people (65+) living alone in the Kirkstall, Headingley and Hyde Park areas (159,000 in Leeds). Whilst some are well supported, many live alone with limited contact to others. “This is one of the best things I’ve ever done”, said Alice Whip (89) who has found lockdown hard. “I imagine lockdown is much harder for those who don’t have anyone to speak to. I get a lot of satisfaction from the calls; both of us enjoy it.” “We’re asking anyone aged 60+ in North West Leeds to join the campaign by calling OWLS on 0113 369 7077”, said Joanne McManus, Community Builder, OWLS. “If you live in Burley, Headingley, Hyde Park, Little Woodhouse and Kirkstall, help make lockdown less lonely.” OWLS hopes the campaign will encourage others to reach out to anyone experiencing lockdown loneliness.
Bin It or Take it Home! Many of us have been dumbfounded at the state parks and beaches have been left in as restrictions have been loosened up. What are they thinking?! It can’t be that difficult to take your rubbish away with you. If everyone just did that and picked up litter where they live and work, there wouldn’t be a litter problem. If a bin is full, take it with you. don’t leave your litter next to it which encourages others to do the same. We can all do our bit to keep Leeds tidy. Litter picking is very popular, with Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh Award participants volunteering to clean up their communities. Young or old, it’s a great way to get out in the fresh air. It’s fun, sociable and helps to keep you fit and active. Community groups are springing up every week. They can provide you with litter grabbers, gloves and community litter bags. They work collaboratively with Leeds City Council who remove the all filled bags, and any fly-tipping is reported to them. It is also strongly supported by many Ward Councillors. Our Future Leeds Launches Video on How to ‘Rethink Leeds’ Our Future Leeds, a network of citizens taking action on the climate emergency, is one year old. It is marking its anniversary by releasing a video with ideas on how to rethink Leeds and #buildbackbetter. Formed to lobby Leeds City Council to declare a Climate Emergency, Our Future Leeds invited over 300 people from across Leeds into a packed venue to inspire them to tackle the Climate and Ecological Emergencies in a socially just way. There’s been much for Leeds climate campaigners to celebrate during the last year – from the Youth Strikes to the recommendations of the UK’s first Citizens’ Jury on Climate Change outside London, and the realisation of Councilled projects like the Leeds PIPES heating network, Big Leeds Climate Conversation and ambitious plans to promote active travel. However, Our Future Leeds believes bigger and faster changes are needed, and that community-led action is the key to tackling the climate emergency. “There’s so much energy and enthusiasm for change in Leeds and the expertise to achieve it”, said Stuart Strathdee, Sixth Form teacher and producer of Our Future Leeds’ video. “We can all help to make the city a better place to live and to make a living.”
COVID-19 has thrown these actions into sharper focus. What jobs will we do? How will we travel? What would lockdown be like in the middle of winter? How can we build on the community support networks seen during lockdown? “One of our aims is to show people what the future could look like, and that changing our mindset from consumer to citizen can lead to a fuller, more connected life”, said Helen Hart, self-employed businesswoman. Charities Benefit from Freemasons’ Emergency Fund Eight Leeds charities have benefited from a Covid-19 emergency fund set up by the Province of Yorkshire West Riding Freemasons. So far, it has distributed over £80,000 to 21 organisations, including Leeds Cares, St Vincent’s Support Centre, Homeless Street Angels, Zarach Leeds, and Leeds South and East Foodbank. In addition, a number of these charities have been ‘match funded’ to the tune of £13,500 by the Masonic Charitable Foundation, West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd has also committed £60,000 to Yorkshire Air Ambulance and given £2,500 to Prostate Cancer UK, to help raise awareness of the disease and encourage more men to have a test. “During this dreadful pandemic, which has sadly taken its toll on a number of our members and their dependents, we have been supporting our local communities wherever we can”, said David Pratt, Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Yorkshire West Riding. “As soon as the impact of Covid-19 on our region hit home, we set up an emergency fund to help charities that were doing amazing work, despite having lost much of their traditional funding streams. Song Portraits: A Slice of Life in Lockdown Writer and poet Peter Spafford really enjoys writing poems about people. He sees them as portrait words: Poem Portraits. He is also a songwriter and recently decided that he’d like to try writing songs about people: Song Portraits. The present crisis has been hard for everyone, but Peter felt it might be more difficult for older people, especially those not on the internet, or not confident with being online. He had the idea to tell their stories at this particular time through music and with funding from Leeds Inspired, Song Portraits was born. With help from three key organisations – Time to Shine, Headingley Methodists and Neighbourhood Action in Farnley – Peter contacted a number of participants. He then called them once or twice for a chat about the kind of things they liked doing or had done in the past; favourite places and people, and wrote a song based on these conversations. He then performed it down the phone, posted a CD, or cycled it over, and took on board any suggestions. Once agreed, he recorded it properly and copies were made for friends and family.

And the songs are great! Luckily Peter also works for East Leeds FM who are airing the songs. Time to Shine are publishing the lyrics in their regular Shine magazine, and BBC Radio Leeds is also featuring them. “It feels like a big responsibility to write a song about somebody”, said Peter. “But it’s been fascinating talking to everyone. York Gate Garden is Open! Gardeners’ 2020 Show Cancelled Unfortunately, Adel Gardeners’ (previously known as Adel & District Horticultural Society) Annual Flower & Produce Show 2020, scheduled for 5th September, has been cancelled. The Show Committee feels that, even with the proposed lifting of government restrictions, there are too many safety issues involved in running such a show this September.
The team at York Gate reopened the garden on 4th July. Since closing for the season last year, a brand new Mediterranean Sunken Garden has been built, ready to be planted up in the Autumn, and changes have been made to the intricate garden rooms. Sybil's Garden is now a tropical oasis and the Kitchen Garden has been planted with seasonal treats. The traditional Wildflower Meadow is open for families to enjoy the wilder areas of York Gate, with swathes of knapweed, vetches and achilliea. The garden unveiled its new café on 22nd July, serving brunch and light lunches using handpicked produce from the vegetable garden, homemade sandwiches, cakes and a selection of speciality teas and coffees. Sit and enjoy a cuppa on the wonderful new sun terrace overlooking the new garden.
They also opened the new gift shop, selling a beautiful range of gifts for the home and garden, and the new plant nursery sells plants propagated from the garden.
However, they have every intention of being back – bigger and better than ever! – next year on 4th September, when you will find all your old favourites and possibly something new!

RUNNING TIME: 124 MINUTES "I'm pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have, in fact, caught and killed a large predator that supposedly injured some bathers. But, as you see, it's a beautiful day, the beaches are open, and people are having a wonderful time…"
It defined the summer blockbuster in 1975, launching a 27-year-old Steven Spielberg to the top of Hollywood’s A-list. Only 'Star Wars' could trump its box office triumph, and today, 'JAWS' remains one of the mustsee films of the era. Yet, in this most strange summer of 2020, the man-eating shark creates fresh undercurrents in a new highdefinition restoration to celebrate its 45th anniversary. That's because 'JAWS' is not just a horror about a marauding Great White Shark that won’t go away. It explores the very human experience of a community terrorised by an unstoppable natural force, provoking social unrest and economic stagnation. Meanwhile, a police chief does his best to safeguard the lives of his public, whilst a scientific advisor’s warnings of imminent disaster go unheeded by a gunshot politician thirsty for tourist dollars. Sound familiar? Originally conceived as a B-movie cash in, Carl Gottlieb’s adaptation of Peter Benchley’s uneven novel sharpens a shaky paperback into a precise three act thriller; transitioning from small town politics to a fierce coastline battle and a swashbuckling, seafaring counterstrike.
Upcoming director Steven Spielberg exercises skill in both territories, framing the community of Amity island through detailed interactions and vignettes. A rich ensemble ranges from simple walk-on extras - “What is this bite radius crap?” – up to a bravura performance from Robert Shaw as manic shark hunter Quint. His unlikely alliance with wispy Richard Dreyfuss as privileged Oceanographer Matt Hooper, and Roy Scheider’s fish-out-of-water New York cop Martin Brody, establishes one of the most enduring three-hand dynamics captured on film. Spielberg’s insistence (or juvenile hubris) to shoot the action on the ocean with pioneering full-size effects also injects a tactile, real-world aesthetic to the action:
What you see in the panoramic frame of 'JAWS' is really there in the scene – something that even modern-day CGI effects and studio sets struggle to achieve flawlessly. Much has been said about how the mechanical sharks failed to perform on cue, forcing the young director to shoot around the prop and infer its presence with Hitchcockian suspense. That’s true, and the film is a better paced work for it. But there's plenty of toothy action in climatic 30 minutes, and the 25ft monster continues to scare, on demand, with a primal response. As thrilling, gripping and exciting as it is, 'JAWS' is also a very funny film. It pokes fun at small-minded islanders, competitive alpha males and prissy, gossiping townswomen. Between Quint’s lewd sea shanties and violent shark attacks, you’re taken on a finely-tuned rollercoaster ride of laughs and screams, escalating in a satisfying battle of man vs beast. One of the finest dramatic interludes comes as Robert Shaw delivers a monologue he helped compose. An accomplished author himself, Shaw redrafted dialogue where Quint recalls the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. His slurring, oily-eyed oration of how Quint became stranded in the water with savage sharks is mesmerising, and it’s a crime that Shaw wasn’t rewarded with an Oscar nomination. The final polish comes with John Williams' iconic soundtrack, underpinned by a
simple chromatic motif that reaches the piercing discord of Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring'. Next to the 'Psycho' shower theme, Williams’ vivid orchestral score re-established classical arrangements in modern movies for decades to come. So, does the tack sharp digital restoration make the mechanical shark look more real? Of course not, and if you're seeking an all-out effects showcase, 'JAWS' in any format is not that film. But for those longing for a perfectly paced two-hour adventure, this new transfer helps clarify the film’s outstanding dialogue, its timeless performances, ground-breaking cinematography and thundering symphonic soundtrack. 'JAWS' just might be the classiest popcorn movie of all time, with plenty going on beneath the surface. The 4k restoration is as good as it’s ever likely to be, and for a new generation, offers an enviable induction into one of Hollywood’s most entertaining and revolutionary films. Star Design Raises Funds for Brain Tumour Trust Artist Robbie Cook recently produced a design to raffle in aid The Brain Tumour Charity, in memory of his mother who died from a brain tumour just a year ago. “I wanted to make a difference to the way brain tumours are researched and tackled”, said Robbie. “I decided to create a design that would appeal to a wide range of people and settled on a piece based around star signs. I kept people engaged through my Instagram account and had a fantastic reaction to the black and white design with zodiac signs surrounded by stars like they were floating in space.” He now plans to produce a range of tote bags using the same star sign design and will donate 100% of the proceeds to The Brain Tumour Charity.
“Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of the under 40s and survival rates have not improved significantly over the last 40 years”, said Helen Rogers, community fundraiser. “We rely 100% on voluntary donations. It’s only through the efforts of people like Robbie and his family that we can change these shocking statistics in the future.” The Brain Tumour Charity is the UK’s largest dedicated brain tumour charity. It funds pioneering research to increase survival rates and improve treatment options, as well as raise awareness of the symptoms and effects of brain tumours to enable earlier diagnosis. Five Years of Achievement for Forward Leeds Over 6,000 people have achieved their treatment goals since Forward Leeds launched its service in July 2015. Last year the service, Britain’s second largest drug and alcohol agency, had its strongest ever performance when 1,543 people exited the service having achieved their goals, 145 more than any previous year. In all, 2,000 people were supported in 2019/20 for alcohol issues alone.
The first thing we did in lockdown was to individually call all 3,300 of our current clients to check on how they were doing”, said Lee Wilson, Humankind Operations Director for Leeds. “We’ve continued to work with clients throughout lockdown, over the phone and online and we’ve just started to have people back into our hubs again so we can see them face-to-face.”
The service is a partnership between Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, BARCALeeds and St Anne’s Community Services and led by Humankind.
Since it began in July 2015, 12,000 people have been referred into the service.
“Forward Leeds continues to make a massive positive impact on the lives of thousands of individuals and families affected by drug and alcohol use”, said Cllr Rebecca Charlwood, Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing & Adults at Leeds City Council. “Offering information, advice and support to anyone who needs it, the service has continued to improve. It quickly and effectively adapted, and continued to take referrals, during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of its staff.”

Light up Leeds for St Gemma’s! St Gemma’s Hospice is asking the community to join them for a special nighttime walk around North Leeds to help raise vital funds for the charity on 10th October. ‘Light up Leeds’ has a choice of five or tenmile routes, and everyone taking part will be given special lantern to help them ‘light
up Leeds’ – whether in memory of a loved one or just to brighten up the community. “Walking round the streets and seeing the line of bobbing lanterns was magical”, said Ruth, who took part last year. “Holding the lantern
in memory of my dad was painful but cathartic. It was a beautiful way for my friend and I to say goodbye. I would definitely do it again.” If you can’t join in with the main event on 10th October, St Gemma’s is also offering a virtual event where you can complete your own night-time walk anytime in October. Allerton Grange Sixth Form, which is close to Roundhay, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Oakwood and Meanwood, will be moving to the former NE City Learning Centre (CLC) building, located in the grounds of Allerton Grange School as of September. A £4.8 million redevelopment project will be undertaken in the school grounds, which will include the remodelling and refurbishment of the former CLC building. Allerton Grange Sixth Form students will benefit from a new, on-site Sixth Form centre, offering a range of facilities including social spaces, classrooms, workspaces and computer suites. There are 68 sixth form providers across Leeds and Allerton Grange is currently ranked first for Applied Level 3 subjects and ninth for A level
progress. With 240 students it is on the smaller side, offering a nurturing environment with dedicated teachers to help Post 16 learners reach their full potential. Whether students choose to study A levels or a vocational course, they benefit from smaller class sizes, high quality teaching, a supportive environment with a range of enrichment opportunities and careers guidance. Younger Life Basketball Courts Get Facelift for Summer Let’s Do More CIC (LDM), supported by Basketball England's Project Swish campaign and Leeds City Council, recently refurbished the Mandela Outdoor Basketball Courts in Chapeltown – part of their longerterm plan to improve basketball provision city wide. The courts will now have re-drawn lines, replacement hoops and replaced backboards. LDM raised some of the funds through a go fund me page, which raised £555. These minor refurbishments will go a long way towards improving the overall appearance of the court.
LDM plan to run an outdoor basketball project on the court during the Summer holidays. This will include giving away over 200 basketballs to young people in Chapeltown, Beeston and Seacroft as part of their #LetsBall campaign. Sixth Form GSAL Student Uses Scholarship Fund to Produce PPE Jake Howarth (17), a sixth form student at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), recently spent an engineering scholarship fund on a 3D printer so he could produce personal protective equipment (PPE) for NHS workers. He was already producing visors on a 3D printer but was able to invest in a newer, faster model with £600 awarded to him by the Arkwright Trust. The funds are intended to support students of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) to help with their A-level studies and fund activities to promote their understanding and experience of engineering. Jake teamed up with 3D Crowd UK, a group of over 8,000 volunteers around
the country who are using their manufacturing expertise and equipment to produce PPE. In just 12 weeks the group has produced 185,000 visors and raised £144,000 to pay for materials. “We don’t just need makers though”, said Jake. “We also need drivers to collect and deliver PPE, people willing to act as hubs, and donations via the 3Dcrowd website.” The design technology workshop at GSAL has also been busy as a PPE production centre. John Bagshaw, Head of Design Technology, coordinated the project, which has manufactured and despatched 4,000 visors since school closed at the end of March.
“In partnership with six other schools, we’ve provided PPE to 150 recipients including NHS services, GP surgeries, pharmacies, police, shops, care homes and dentists, even posting items to London, Wales and Scotland”, said John. “It’s been a magnificent effort by colleagues and students, who helped on the production line whenever they had time.”
