RECREATION SPOTLIGHT

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE WINS AND LOSES, BUT THE EXPERIENCE By David Minihan, USPTA Master Professional Director of Tennis, Westwood Tennis Center 405-366-8859 www.westwoodtennis.com Eight years ago I authored a book, Coaching Your Tennis Champion. I had the privilege in interviewing parents of former and current ATP professionals. Some parents had the reputation as “difficult” parents, while others were the example of what a tennis-parent should be. As you can imagine, the difficult parents had the mind set win-at-all-cost. Unfortunately, they would go to whatever measures needed to win and anything less would be unacceptable within their household. While winning is fun and makes going out to dinner even more enjoyable with a trophy in hand, the experience of playing the sport out weighs the hardware. Parents have an opportunity to teach life lessons to their children through sports. Unfortunately the trend in today’s culture has navigated to focusing on wins. We need to change this mindset or we are at risk in running our youth out of sports resulting in more TV watching or iPad usage and less physical activity.

8

WHAT CAN WE TEACH THEM? • When they are tired and don’t feel like going to practice. In life, you’re not always going to feel 100%, but we still have to go to work and do our part for the company we are employed with. • Our youth will learn through sports discipline, focus and dedication. • We have the chance to teach our child you are not always going to win and how we handle defeat speaks on the character of who we are as an individual. • Understanding what a “goal” means and that setting goals will be something that you will carry with you the rest of your life. • In tennis, players have to call their own lines. We don’t have the luxury to have umpires on every court. What a great opportunity to teach your child sportsmanship and fairness. In addition, how to handle situations when they are getting cheated. • Teaching your children to respect officials and give them the respect they deserve as an adult even if you don’t agree with their decisions. As a parent you can set this example by how you treat the officials during and after a game. I encourage parents to have their kids exposed to as many sports as possible. While I want tennis as one of those sports, it is important that kids play both team and individual sports as there are learning experiences for both. The City of Norman has an exceptional parks and recreational system in place that exposes children to many different sports. Get involved!
