ZOMBIE ESCAPE

How do you describe an event that gets the adrenaline pumping, involves people of all ages, and gets you running from and dodging zombies? Two words: Zombie Escape! The Zombie Escape, which is in its second year, is an event where participants are challenged to complete a course while avoiding zombies. The course is approximately one mile long consisting of trails winding through trees, hills, and open spaces. It is open to youth and adults of all ages and is held at the Griffin Park Disc Golf Course in September. When registering, participants choose a “wave” to be a part of. Each wave will consist of no more than 25 participants and will be sent out into the zombie infested course every 7 minutes. Prior to being released each participant is given a flag football belt with two flags attached. Zombies attempt to “infect” participants by snatching their flags. Those who finish the course with one or both flags still attached are given a “Survivor” medal. Those who finish the course with both flags missing are given an “Infected” medal. Like most events hosted by the City of Norman Parks and Recreation department, the Zombie Escape is an event that provides an opportunity for people in our community to connect. With that being said, there is one unique quality of this particular event that is different from most of the others: To increase chances of “surviving”, participants must keep moving” with “With that being said, there is one unique quality of this particular event that differs from most other community events we host: the Zombie Escape motivates individuals to constantly move, thus promoting physical fitness. To achieve the level of quality and success we strive for in this event, we rely heavily on the wonderful volunteers from our community. There are several ways people in our community can assist with the event, but the biggest need is in the form of zombies. People of all ages are welcome to volunteer as zombies, but we do require that zombies under 16 years of age be accompanied by an adult. Because this is a familyfriendly event we are proactive in letting our volunteers know that we are not looking for “Walking Dead” quality zombies, however we do expect our volunteer zombies to make every effort to “look and act the part.”
