ThehottestplaceonEarthisDeathValley, California.OnJuly15,1972,thegroundsurface temperaturereached201degreesF.,just11 degreeslessthantheboilingpointofwater.
DeathValleyisalong,narrowdesertbasinwitha lowpointof282feetbelowsealevel(Badwater), walledinbyhigh,steepmountainranges.The clear,dryairandsparseplantcoverallowthesun toheatthedesertsurfaceintensely.Theupper limitofsafetyforhumansisabout95degreesF. (35degreesC.)at100%humidity.Abovethat,itis extremelydifficultforthehumanbodytocool itselfbyevaporatingsweattomaintainastable bodycoretemperature.

TheBadwater135,aroadultrainDeathValley, tookplacefromJuly4-6.Itbillsitselfas“The World’sToughestFootrace”andcovers135miles ofroadrunningnon-stop,startingfrom Badwater,thelowestelevationinNorthAmerica, andfinishingatWhitneyPortal(8300feet),the trailheadtotheMt.Whitneysummit,thehighest pointinthecontiguousUnitedStates.Thecourse coversthreemountainrangesforatotalof14,600 ft.ofcumulativeverticalascentand6,100ft.of
cumulativedescent.The100competitorseach year,eligiblebyinvitationonly,have48hoursto completethecourse.AmericanAshleyPaulson wastheoverallwinnerthisyearwithanew women’srecordof21hours,44minutes.
Ineverrantherace,butIhikedinDeathValley, includingpastthefamousBadwatersignpostin thedesert,duringthesummerof1971.Icanstill callupthefeelingoftheheatemanatingfromthe saltflats.Irememberthehotwindsblowingat ZabriskiePointinDeathValleyNationalPark,an elevatedvistaabovethebadlands,wheremy travelbuddyandIspentanightsleepingonthe groundbesidemycar.
Withaveragetemperaturesexpectedtoclimbfor theforeseeablefuture,whatwilllifebelikeinthe summerstocome?Canweprepareourselvesfor whatcouldbeextremeconditionsrelativetothe presentday?
InDeathValley,Julytemperaturesroutinelysoar above120degreesF.intheshade,andthecourse doesn’tevenhaveshade.Theasphaltgetseven hotter.Eggshavebeenfriedonthepavement. Feetcangetburnedwhenshoerubbermelts. ParticipantsintheBadwater135havetorunand walktheribbonofhighwayforuptotwodays.
Likely,noothergroupofultrarunnerspreparesas meticulouslyastheBadwaterathletesdo.The combinationofthesearingheat,themindnumbingmonotonyofthestraight-lineroad,the exclusivityofgettinganentryandthesheer expenseofparticipatingwiththemandatory crewcombinetomakethiseventaveryserious commitment.Inspiteofallthechallenges,the racehasahighfinishrateof85-90%.
Badwaterisoneofthegreatesthotenvironment performance-provinggroundsimaginable.The
eventputsamassivestrainonone’s thermoregulationand,thus,the gastrointestinalsystem.Youhavetobeable tosweatalot,whilesendingbloodtoyour skintocooloff,whilesendingbloodtoyour musclestokeepyoumoving,whilesending bloodtoyourguttoabsorbwaterand nutrients.

Hedrovetoworkwiththewindowsclosed andtheheatonmaximum.Aswellhespent longsessionsinahealthclubsauna.Others haverunonatreadmillwithadryervent blowingintheirfaceorwithportableheating elementsaroundthetreadmill.Somehave trainedonatreadmillinagreenhouseorina sauna.Somedoexercisesorcoreworkinthe
sauna.Someturnuptheheatintheirhousestoatleast 90degreesF.Fundamentally,suchheatacclimation strategiesworkbyinducingsystemsandcellular responsestohelpyourbodycopewiththeheat.
OneofthedifferentiatingfeaturesofBadwater comparedtootherultrasisthatyouhavegreataccessto yourcrewandsupplies.Food,water,pacers,medical suppliesandtheall-importantabsolutelycriticaliceare nevermorethanseveralminutesawayoncethefirst thirdoftheracehasbeencompleted.

Roylistened,whichissucharareandprecious gift.Hetalked,maybemorethananyoneI've evermet,buthetalkedtolearnaboutothers.He wasprobablythemostcuriousindividualI've everhadthepleasuretomeet.Throughhis listening,hehelpedothersintheverybestof ways.Royunderstoodthatoneofthemost valuablelifelessonsistoencourageandnurture otherstofindstrengthinthemselves.Hefostered self-sufficiencyandtrulyunderstoodtohonour thejourneyofothers.Royrecognizedthatwhen othersareattheirlowestandfacingchallenges, itisnotourroleto"facilitate"thembuttohelp themfindtheirstrengthsandresourceful attitudestogrowfromtheseexperiences.
WemetRoyandHeatherin1989andwillbe forevergratefulfortheirfriendshipasithas continuedovertheyears.WhileRoywashumble tothecore,hewasabeaconinourlivesduring someparticularlychallengingtimes.Tomy husbandespecially,Roywasinstrumentalinhis
guidance,enormouslyinfluencingandhelping himdiscoverstrengths,valuesandqualitiesto risestrongerandwiserforthejourney.Asour friendshipcontinued,Royinsistentlyand consistentlyremindedusofhowheadmired whathadbeenovercomeandhowwehad grown,yethewantedtohearnothingaboutour gratitudetowardshim.
Overtheyears,Royfarmed,wasatrucker,and cutroadsideditchesinmanydifferentcountiesin SouthernOntario.Throughoutitall,hemanaged toconnectandenrichthelivesofothers. Stoppingtoconnectwithothershehappened upononhisjourneysmadehislifesoveryrich buttouchedtheheartsofothersinawaythat oftenupliftedthemandmadethembetter, strongerpeoplefortherelationship.Roylovedto driveandlovedtoexplore.
Roywasfatherlybutnotpatronizingor condescending,guidingbutnotcontrolling.He wasanoldsoulbutveryimpishandyoungat heart,withamostengagingsmile,atwinklein hiseyesandaheartylaugh.Hehadthe "goodest"ofhearts,aloveforlife,peopleand dogs(anddesserts).Ourdogwasinseparable fromRoywheneverhewasaround.OnJune23, welostourdogtoanaggressivelymphoma.We takecomfortinknowing"his"Roywasthereto greethimat"RainbowBridge"andthatthey journeyontogether.

TheNorfolkCountyAgriculturalSocietyispleasedtoannouncethattheRCMPMusicalRidewillbe makingitswaytotheNorfolkCountyFairgroundsonTuesday,September12,2023,aspartofits cross-Canadatour.ACanadiansymboloftradition,honourandpride,theMusicalRideisrecognized internationally.Thisyearalsomarksthe150th anniversaryoftheRCMPinCanada.
TheMusicalRideconsistsofateamofupto32riders(allRCMPmembers)andhorsesdemonstrating theirspectacularequestrianskillthroughavarietyofformationsandcavalrydrillssettomusic.

Afewmonthsback,wewereatafamilygathering inMontreal,andthiscousinwastherewithhis family.Hiseleven-year-oldsonfoundoutthat wherewelived,wehadtrailsandariveronour property.Heaskedifhecouldcomeforavisitand ifIwouldteachhimtoswimandgofishing.Isaid sureandthatwecouldbuildatrail.Asatypical adult,Ifiguredhewaselevenandwouldforget andmoveontothenextthing.
Well,Icouldnothavebeenmorewrong.Afew weeksback,thefamilycametostaywithusfora fewdaysandtheyoungfellatotallyremembered. Infact,hisdadsaidhekeptbringingitup.He wantedtomakehisowntrail.
Tobefair,therearesomanybugsthistimeof yearthattheycouldhavepickedFélixupand carriedhimaway,buthewasgame.
Weheadedouttoscoutalocationforhistrailas soonastheyarrivedonSaturdayafternoon.We checkedoutsomereallybuggyonesandthen foundanareasomewhatclosetotheriverwitha verysteephillandalargesectionofgrass.
Helookedoverthelocationcarefullybefore decidingthatthiswouldbethespot.

Afterlunchthatday,hebegantowork onhistrailsigns.Hehadbeenthinking ofseveralnamesandaskedwhatI thought.Isaid,"It'syourdecision.You putinthework,youdecide."
Outcamethepaint,andafewhours later,thesignsweredone!Weletthe paintdryovernightandearlyMonday morning,putacoupleofcoatsof transparentstainon,andletthatdryfor abit.Thenwewereofftothewoods withhismom,dadandsisterintowfor theofficialunveilingofthelatesttrail namedLuckyHills(FélixinSpanish meansLucky)!
Itwasagreatweekend,andIwantto thankFélixforalltheworkhedidbringing histrailtolife!Hewascommittedand stuckwithit!Congratulations!!
