MyfriendJoeandIwantedtoparticipateinan eventcreatedbyLazarusLake,thebrilliant,devilish founderofsomeoftheworld’smostunique ultrarunningevents,includingthefamous Barkley Marathons.Wechose ARaceForTheAges.Thisrace endsatnoononLabourDay.Allrunnersage41and overareallottedthenumberofhoursequaltotheir ageinwhichtoaccumulateasmanymilesas possible.Allthose40andundercompeteoverthe finalfortyhoursoftherace.Thewinneriswhoever hasthemostmileswhentimerunsout.Duetoits uniqueformat,theraceisdominatedbythesuper veteransofthesport.Joewouldbestartingat1a.m. onFriday,andIwouldfollowat6a.m.Thecourseis ameanderingone-mileloop,allonpavement, throughaparkinManchester,Tennessee.Itfeatures along,unshaded,straightsectionbalancedbya sectionofpathwayalongsidealittleriver.Theloop designgivesyouopportunitiestoseetheother competitorsfrequently.
WeleftPortDovertheTuesdaybeforetheevent, givingourselvestwodaysforthedrive.Thatproved tobeagoodplanbecauseJoehadunknowingly selectedNoHighwaysonhisphoneGPS.Atone point,aswemotoredcarefullyalonganarrow, curvingroadinabarrenruralarea,anoldbeagle waswanderingslowlytowardus.Joesaid,“Well, lookatthat.”Ireplied,“He’sprobablyneverseena carbefore.”Wewereinnorushandthoroughly enjoyedtheoff-highwayroutedictatedtousbythe phoneaswetalkedandlaughedourwaysouth.The firstnight,westayedinanoldmotelbesidethe long-closed,dilapidatedKentuckyCountryMusic HallofFame.Wearrivedattheracesitelateonthe secondafternoon,thenwalkedpartoftherouteand
stakedoutaspaceforourselvesbyputtingup ourtable.
Wespentsometimechattingwithpeoplewe know,andItrackeddownmygoodfriend Doyle,whomIlastsawoverfouryearsago. Thenwecheckedinatourmotel,whichwasjust onekilometrefromtheparkentrance.The ownersturnedouttobeterrific,verywelcoming andhappytoseeus.Wemetacoupleofother runnerswhowerestayingthereandthen headedoutfordinner,drivingthefulllengthof themainthoroughfarebeforeselectinga restaurant.Havingenjoyedourdinner,we decidedwewouldreturnbeforeweheaded home.Thename,O’Charleys,wouldbeeasyto remember,givenmynameandthefactthatJoe isIrish.
Thenextday,wepickedupafewsuppliesand wentbacktotheparktosetupoursite.After wrestlingJoe’snew,never-before-erected canopyintoitsproperform,weputoutanantigravitychairforsleepingandtwometalfolding chairs.Ihadabagwithmyraceclothes,a secondpairofshoesandafewmedicalitems. Forourfoodsupplies,wehadtwocoolersfor drinksandsnacks,aswellasseverallarge bottlesofwater.Icecouldbepurchasedfrom theIceHouseintheparkatanytime.Therace itselfdidnothaveanaidstation,butprepackagedmealsfromCrackerBarrelwouldbe provideddailyat6a.m.,noonand6p.m.Most ofthemturnedouttobebarelyedible.I supplementedwhatIateofthemwithmygels, flatbread,afewcookies,bananas,andgrapes.

Wehadsomehowforgottentodoany realgroceryshoppingbeforetherace.
JoeandIwalkedtheentireroute, exploredalongtheriverandthenwent foraheartydinner.Backatthemotel,we bothhadshowersandacoupleofhours ofsleepbeforeitwastimetoheadover for1a.m.Ioptedtogowithhim,watch thestartofthe“Classof83”,andthen sleeponamatinthebackofourcar untilmyearlymorningbeginning.Islept okaybutwokeupabitafter4,soIwent foralittlewalk.Foronce,Iarrivedatthe startveryrelaxedandinplentyoftime. Therewasonlyoneothercompetitorin the“Classof78”,acharacternamed Harry,whospentmuchofhistime barkingout“Doittoit”,“Flauntitwhile you’vegotit”,andotherdirectives, indecipherabletome,tovarious participantsthroughthefollowingdays. Theweatherconditionsweregoodearly inthefirstday,withclearskiesand pleasanttemperatures.Iremained relaxed,walkingsteadilyandjogging occasionally.Asthedayprogressed,so didthetemperature.Oneveterantook thetemperaturedownneartheasphalt inthelateafternoon;itwas108degrees F.Someofthoserunningwereburning up,butwalkingreallyhelpstomitigate theeffectsofheatonthebody’score.I wasgettingmydreadedleantotheright asIfatigued,butIwasabletomanageit bygoingeasilyandneverpushing
myself.Also,ashashappenedinotherracesinhot conditions,myhandsbecameseverelyswollen.Iwasnow takingamagnesiumtableteveryfewhours,asthatis supposedtohelp.Itdidn’tworrymebecauseIknewitwas temporary.Istayedoutonthecourseallnight, appreciatingthelackofsunandthecoolertemperatures, althoughitwasstillwarmandmuggy.Aftereveryone-mile lap,Istoppedatourtableandhadanelectrolytedrinkand somewaterorgingerale.Mosttimes,Ihadasnack,and sometimesIhadtorefillmybottles.Thiswasthefirst multidayraceIhadeverdonewithoutacrew,andIwas comfortablelookingaftermyselfbecauseIwasn’tpushing hard.Ilikedthefrequentlittlebreaks,andluckily,Iwasn’t havinganyfootordigestionissues.Ihadn’tchanged clothesorshoesandhadn’tevenlookedatmyfeet.
IsurprisedmyselfwhenIfoundoutthatafter24hours,I wasinthirdplaceamongthe135entrants.Butthefaster youngrunnerswouldbegainingonme,andI’dbeenupfor overadaywithnosleep…

Morethanonce,Ilookedaroundatthesold-outcrowdwithitsagediversityfrom seventoseventyandsimplysmiledatwhatIwasseeing.Thepositiveenergyand releaseoflife'sworriesallowedfolkstobeinthemoment,somethingwemissed duringthepandemic.

Ikealwaystoldmethathewasjustdoinghisjob.Theenemywasjustdoingtheirs.Henever consideredhimselfahero.Hejustdidwhatheneededtosurvive,tostayaliveonemoreday…

Since2009,IcontinuedtopopinforteawithIke.Hisdoorwasalwaysopen,andourconservations werealwaysinteresting.
