Dear Friends, I’m sure you will all agree that this fall has certainly been a challenge. Superstorm Sandy followed by a nor’easter put New Jersey’s resolve to the test. The devastation caused by these storms was unlike anything many of us have ever seen, and many are still dealing with these challenges many weeks after the storms. While the New Jersey Metro Chapter was closed for a week due to the storm and power outages that gripped our state, we were still active in ensuring that we were responsive to inquiries. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our Information Resource Center, which was able to field our calls while we were closed and help those in need of assistance. Many of the local staff continued to work and assist those we serve while the office was closed, even while they were dealing with their own stormrelated challenges. I thank them for their commitment. Sandy forced us to postpone our Women on the Move event, which was held on November 30. Approximately 300 people came out to honor Board Member Kelly Waters. They also enjoyed a fashion show and a designer handbag silent auction in addition to a gourmet luncheon. Despite the storm we were able to hold our Annual Meeting as scheduled on November 15 in Woodbridge. Attendees elected the slate of nominees for the board of directors, heard the chapter recap of 2012, honored award-winning volunteers and enjoyed a presentation about the latest research initiatives by Dr. Nicholas LaRocca. Congratulations to all of our recently-elected board members and to our award-winning volunteers! I have been asked by many about the impact Sandy will have on fundraising efforts. Certainly, it is anticipated that there will be funds diverted from organizations like the National MS Society to recovery efforts. However, the storm did not lessen the needs of those living with MS. If anything, it heightened them, and we need to continue to raise these all-important funds so that the chapter can continue to provide the best programs and services, advocate on behalf of those impacted by MS, and, of course, continue to fund research that will lead to a cure. As the last days of 2012 wind down, I ask you to keep the National MS Society in mind as you consider your year-end giving. Please accept my best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season! Jim

Change Happens New jersey State Through MS MS Task Force Activism

information, contact Stephanie Hunsinger at stephanie.hunsinger@nmss.org. g

Join the Chapter for MS Awareness Month in March to Support Change For many people living with MS, the disease is just one challenge. We must work together to break down barriers to care, improve access to quality health services, and make MS therapies more affordable. We must pursue funding for more MS research and fight for disability rights. Through activism, we can help fund MS research, improve access to health care, develop accessible housing and gain curb cuts to make our communities more accessible. You can help shape the policies and programs that impact people living with multiple sclerosis. In our state and community, grassroots MS activists pursue local policies and programs to meet the needs of people living with MS. Join them today by lending your voice to the cause. If you are interested in meeting with your elected officials to spread awareness of the issues that are important to you and the thousands of people living with MS in New Jersey, and across the country, contact us. We will support your efforts so your voice can be heard. One voice can make a difference. Let it be yours! We want to hear from you now so we can plan for MS Awareness Month in March! For more

In October, Governor Chris Christie filed direct appointments for the New Jersey Multiple Sclerosis Task Force. The Task Force, created by a law passed by the State Legislature and signed this past January by the Governor, is charged with responsibilities that include identifying the unmet needs of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and working toward providing greater access to treatments and other therapeutic options that might be available. The 14 member task force will meet over a 12 month period at which time they will provide a report of findings and recommendations to the Governor’s office. Eight individuals were appointed by the Governor, including the following friends, volunteers and supporters of the NJ Metro Chapter: Dr. Stuart Cook of UMDNJ, Dr. Krupa Pandey of Barnabas Health Care, Caroline Bogart, RN, Lee Kushner, Charlotte Vandervalk, Tim Barnes and Chapter staff member Stephanie Hunsinger. All nominations are subject to the advice and consent of the State Senate. Congratulations to all those appointed and thank you for your support on this important opportunity for the MS community. For more information on the MS Task Force, please contact Stephanie Hunsinger, Advocacy Manager, at stephanie.hunsinger@nmss.org. g

6 Working Out Never Felt So Good! I am amazed at how good I feel after my daily work outs at Kessler Rehabilitation in Saddle Brook! I love it; I look forward to going every day! Joe Neary, a person with MS for the last 35 years recently proclaimed the importance of his new daily routine and how it has enriched his life, both physically and socially! Joe took a chance last year and enrolled in the Kessler Cognitive Wellness program in Saddle Brook. Skeptical at first, he soon realized the value of this program as he learned new cognition activities while other more familiar activities were reinforced to help him with memory and understanding. While at the facility one day, he took a tour of the gym. He was surprised to see so many “people like him” working out and working out hard! “People like him” refers to people who use wheelchairs, people who appeared to be less mobile than him, people who appeared to need more help than him. Joe came to understand that these “people like him” were getting the attention of the rehabilitation professionals at Kessler; they received very specific clinical instruction on how to use the gym equipment to best suit their needs and abilities. He realized

MS connection: winter 2012 that these people were doing something about their inactivity, trying to make the most of the body that still worked. He then registered himself for these same classes and hasn’t looked back! Joe enjoys the camaraderie with the other gym participants; he says that getting out of the house and meeting people add to the pleasure of the gym experience. He indicates that social wellness is just as important as physical wellness! To learn more about exercise and MS, be sure to visit the Wellness page of the Chapter website: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/chapters/ njm/programs--services/wellness/index.aspx.g

New Doctor at the MS Comprehensive Care Center at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center

Accessible Housing Makes A Difference!

The Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Krupa Pandey to the medical staff at it MS Comprehensive Care Center. Dr. Pandey recently relocated to New Jersey from Albany, NY, where she was an assistant professor of Neurology and Director of the MS Clinic at Albany Medical College for the last 3 years. She completed her fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City and her residency in Neurology at Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Pandey will be available to see patients five days a week at the Multiple Sclerosis Center. Feel free to contact the Center at 973-322-7484 with any questions or to make an appointment with Dr. Pandey. g

The NJ Metro Chapter advocates on behalf of all people who are affected by a diagnosis of MS. We listen to people that live with MS, we learn about their needs and we look to help find resources and solutions. With that in mind, a Chapter wide survey was launched in 2009 to learn more about the housing needs of people with MS. The survey responses indicated a need for accessible and affordable housing. Since then the Chapter has been engaged with several initiatives that resulted in helping people with MS find suitable housing.

Kershaw Commons in Freehold has been open for more than year. The resident experiences have been profiled in the past on the Chapter website and in MS Connections. The Chapter and Regan Development (the developer of this project) continue to bring the best environment to the residents making sure that the residents’ needs are being met. Another initiative that the Chapter supported is one that led to housing for several residents in Lyndhurst, where one resident proclaimed, “Affordable and accessible housing can make such an improvement in the quality of life for someone living with MS.” Those are the words of William Milligan, a resident of The

nationalmssociety.org | 1-800-344-4867

Heritage apartment complex in Lyndhurst. Recently William reflected on his move to his apartment in this complex a year ago in September and shares his story with us: “I was diagnosed with MS 17 years ago; before moving to The Heritage, I lived on the third floor of an apartment house; going up and down those stairs was quite burdensome, especially with laundry! I can tell you that my emotional and physical health has improved greatly because of the convenience and accessibility at The Heritage.”

Resident William Milligan enjoying a meeting at the Heritage in Lyndhurst The building management is very sensitive to the needs of its residents. Laura McCabe,

11 Senior Property Manager of The Heritage said that they recently redesigned the community room with a hospitality kitchen, a movie theatre for group viewing and a cyber café with computers and a gaming table; the updated courtyard is perfect for family and friends to gather, especially on a nice day –it is even lit up at night and has a multi-colored illuminated fountain! The building is home to several stores and even a state of the art fitness center. William goes on to say that the services offered by the National MS Society, NJ Metro Chapter help make life at The Heritage much more interesting for people with MS. The Chapter provides regular programming at the building including yoga, self-help group meetings and special presentations for building residents and neighbors who have MS in the surrounding communities. The Housing Authority of Bergen County has made vouchers (rental subsidy) available for qualified applicants. The vouchers make the apartments affordable; the building management ensures that the apartments meet the standards of accessibility (per ADA requirements). The NJ Metro Chapter offers specific services to these residents regarding their MS. Charlotte Vandervalk, Director of Development, Housing Authority of Bergen County said, “I am thrilled that the partnership between these entities resulted in helping people with MS find affordable and accessible housing. This collaboration is applauded!” g

women on the move luncheon The New Jersey Metro Chapter held its 9th annual Women on the Move Luncheon and Fashion Show on Friday, November 30, 2012 at the Westmount Country Club in Woodland Park, NJ. The MS Women on the Move Luncheon is a unique fundraising experience that creates an inspiring, motivational and empowering environment. The event creates a social environment for like-minded people to gather, learn about multiple sclerosis, and raise funds for local programs and services, as well as accelerate the national research effort. This year’s honoree was Kelly Waters, a lawyer and partner with Coughlin Duffy LLP, a Municipal Court Judge for the Township of Union and a member of the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Metro Chapter. Kelly was honored for her continued support and advocacy on behalf of the MS Community, as well as her hands-on involvement with fundraising activities. Ashley Kumlien, the Founder of MS Run the US, Inc., presented an inspirational keynote. Ashley’s appearance was sponsored by Acorda Therapeutics. Chris Wragge, of CBS 2 News, is the event Ambassador and was the emcee for the event. Event partners who have joined our mission and are committed to the success of the luncheon were Adora Bella Salon and Capri Institute. Guests were treated to a gourmet lunch and fashion show with fashions provided by the LOFT, Paramus Park Mall. One of the highlights of the afternoon was the Designer Handbag Auction. The Women on the Move Luncheon series in

15 northern NJ has been attended by approximately 300-400 women each year. These women are business professionals and executives who work for major New Jersey companies, law offices, and self-owned businesses, as well as clients with MS or caregivers to those that have MS. These women are community leaders who want to share and give back to the region where they live. The MS Women on the Move Luncheon creates an opportunity to empower each other to create a better future for those living with MS. A primary goal of the luncheon is to reach out to active business professionals and community leaders to educate and motivate them to make MS one of the charities they support on an on-going basis. The Women on the Move Luncheon event offers a unique and targeted avenue to reach a group of well-connected professionals and community leaders. It provides a way for individuals and corporations to be involved in a nationally branded, highly visible campaign, while allowing clients and employees an opportunity for social interaction and networking. g
