MS CONNECTION: SPRING 2013

LETTER FROM BOARD CHAIR

MIKE GIBNEY Friends,

Spring has arrived and this means a significant part of the New Jersey Chapters annual fundraising is about to get under way! First up is MS Walk on Sunday, April 14, which takes place at 12 different locations around the Garden State. As usual, we expect thousands of participants to either walk, volunteer, or provide services to make this a very special day. This is our largest fundraiser, so we need you to lace up those sneakers, polish those walking shoes, and/or lend a hand to make the day a success.

CONNECT WITH US ONLINE:

The Chapter will host its annual MS Spring Golf Classic at beautiful Ridgewood Country Club on May 6. As one of our longest running events, this is a sell-out every year.

New Jersey Metro Chapter www.nationalMSsociety.org/NJM Email: njminfo@nmss.org

Also in May, we have the Bike MS Coast the Coast Ride on the weekend of the 18th and 19th. This has proven a bit of a challenge (to say the least) as Super Storm Sandy has disrupted a number of roads and locations used during this event. But challenges are nothing new to those fighting MS, so this challenge is accepted! The routes for this ride range from 25 miles to a two-day, 170-mile trek!

In June, it is time to get down and dirty‌literally, when MuckFest MS takes place on June 15. Held for the second year in a row at the Essex County South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, Muckfest MS is a fun and challenging 5-mile course full of dirt and mud for participants to slosh, slip, and slide through an exciting obstacle course for the hardiest athletes and the most fun-loving teams. Whether you want to participate, form a team, donate, or simply learn more about any of these events, please visit our web site: www.nationalmssociety.org/chapters/NJM.

See you this spring! Mike Gibney Chairman of the Board

MS RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM TO TAKE PLACE SATURDAY, APRIL 20TH The New Jersey Metro Chapter will host a Research Symposium on Saturday, April 20th from 9:00am – 12:30pm at the Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel located in Iselin, NJ. This year’s program will highlight the latest advances in progressive MS that are underway at the National Institutes of Health. In addition, a researcher from the Kessler Foundation will be there to provide updates on National MS Society funded research in cognition taking place at Kessler. Please look for more detailed information and registration instructions via mail, e-mail and the Chapter website in the coming weeks. For more information or questions, please contact Stephanie Hunsinger at stephanie.hunsinger@ nmss.org or in the office at (201) 967-5599 ext. 43234. g

www.socialsecurity.gov/compassionateallowances The Social Security Administration has an obligation to provide benefits quickly to applicants whose medical conditions are so serious that their conditions obviously meet disability standards. Compassionate Allowances (CAL) are a way of quickly identifying diseases and other medical conditions that invariably qualify under the Listing of Impairments based on minimal objective medical information. Compassionate Allowances allow Social Security to target the most obviously disabled individuals for allowances based on objective medical information that we can obtain quickly. Compassionate Allowances is not a separate program from the Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income programs. CAL conditions are selected using information received at public outreach hearings, comments received from the Social Security and Disability Determination Services communities, counsel of medical and scientific experts, and our research with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). For more information about Compassionate Allowances, including a full list of qualifying conditions, please visit www.socialsecurity.gov/ compassionateallowances/ (please note that MS is included in the list, indicated as malignant multiple sclerosis). g

CHAPTER SELF HELP GROUPS ANIMATED CONVERSATIONS AND MORE! The Chapter has more than 30 self-help groups in its service area. The groups offer individuals opportunities to meet others who have similar life experiences; to share ideas; to learn from each other and from invited speakers. Everyone is welcome. A longtime member of the Chapter, Joe Revello recently indicated this, “The people that attend are very involved and friendships have formed.” The group ranges from people with invisible signs to people in wheelchairs. There are people in their 20’s to people in their 70’s. There are always very animated conversations. The atmosphere enables the people to open up and feel safe. Joe Neary, another Chapter member who is active with many programs and facilitates 2 groups agrees with Joe Revello and goes on to say, “I enjoy meeting new people and encouraging them to stay as active as possible.”

COMMUNITY EFFORT IN ALLENDALE LEADS TO NEW HOUSING! Allendale Housing Inc. in collaboration with Bergen County’s United Way and the Madeline Corporation welcomed the new residents of Crescent Commons in January. The 24 men and women who make their home there are individuals with disabilities who want nothing more than to live active and independent lives in safe affordable homes with the supportive services they need to succeed in doing so. Mayor Vince Barra says “Allendale Housing Inc. is proud to provide that opportunity and believes that our community is enhanced when all neighbors, including those with disabilities, live in an atmosphere of belonging, warmth and support.” The NJ Metro Chapter recognizes the need for affordable and accessible housing for people with disabilities and is proud to offer support to these residents. The Chapter’s MS Spring Golf Committee graciously donated a new television for the activity room. The residents of Crescent Commons expressed their gratitude to the Golf Committee by indicating, “The television will add much needed entertainment value in our community room and we look forward to many gatherings around it!” g

A HOME OF MY OWN THAT FITS MY WORLD IN A WHEEL CHAIR! The following is a personal story shared and written by Liana Kraenzlin, one of the newest residents of Allendale, NJ Growing up in Morris County, I had a wonderful childhood, filled with hopes and dreams! My plan was to become the best nurse ever and like most twenty-something year olds, I expected to live independently from my mom and dad. I was diagnosed with MS while I was in college however I was determined to continue my studies and move forward with my life. I graduated in May, 2000 with my BSN and quickly began working at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson; I had moved in to my own apartment! After several years, my life changed dramatically; I experienced some MS setbacks and I realized that I could no longer be employed, I had to move back home with mom and dad. I had my own first floor space, LIANA’S NEW HOME AT CRESCENT COMMONS IN lovingly dubbed ‘Apartment B’ but ALLENDALE, NEW JERSEY no handicap accessible bathroom or living space. I was just surviving, really, not living. Then I received a mass email from the National MS Society: “Housing Opportunity in Allendale!” I was intrigued to say the least. My OWN space? A home I could call my own and feel safe? The answer was yes-my dream of having my own space to feel safe and DO something could come true. Working my way through the application process seemed to last forever, but in the end, ‘forever’ was worth waiting for! I now have a home of my own that fits my world in a wheel chair! I truly appreciate the efforts of the NJ Metro Chapter for advocating for affordable and accessible housing for people with disabilities; I thank the United Way of Bergen County and the town of Allendale for their progressive approach to helping all citizens live independently by providing this very special housing opportunity called Crescent Commons. You can read more about Liana from her blog: www.crescentcommons.blogspot.com. You can read more about housing programs from the United Way of Bergen County: www. bergenunitedway.org/. g
