Ignite Your Passion NJMEA State Music Conference 5

NJMEA President

Welcome to the 2023 NJMEA State Conference!

On behalf of our Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for joining us for our 2023 New Jersey Music Educators Association State Conference here in Atlantic City!

I want to commend you all for investing in your professional growth! I hope that this conference will impact the way you teach and give you the fuel to take your teaching to the next level! Professional development is a central component of what we offer our members and is my earnest hope that by taking advantage of the sessions, performances, exhibits, and opportunities to connect with colleagues, you return to school excited, renewed, refreshed, and refocused.

As you look through the conference schedule, please note that we have dedicated concert hours that feature several performance groups throughout the Northeast. Our General Sessions on Thursday and Friday will provide us a time to recognize our Master Music Teachers and other award recipients. This year we are having two keynote speakers, Dr. T. André Feagin and Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser—come be inspired and challenged by these two dynamic speakers! We also hope you enjoy the Friday evening special guest performance artists, Naturally 7.

One of the reasons we moved our conference to Atlantic City, was so that you could enjoy some of the evening and social life of the city. Please take some time to visit some of the area’s eateries and stores, they will be grateful for your business.

This year, the All-State ensembles, Treble Choir, Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Band, will render two performances! The first will be Saturday morning, right here in Atlantic City! The final performance will be Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Newark at the prestigious New Jersey Performance Arts Center. I hope you join us for one or both of these performances.

Finally, would like to thank Marie Malara, our Conference Chairperson, and her team for all of their time and hard work in putting together this year’s program. I would also like to thank our Executive Director, Bill McDevitt, for his efforts and aid in all aspects of registration and planning. His wisdom and institutional knowledge have been essential during this transitional time in our profession and our organization.

I firmly believe that this conference can be a moment for you to Ignite Your Passion! Do not miss this moment. Use the momentum from this weekend to propel you to the next level.

Yours, Wayne

2023 NJMEA State Conference

Friday Night Gala Concert

NATURALLY 7

Certain experiences burn themselves in your memory from the very first encounter. The jaw-dropping audio pyrotechnics that Naturally 7 put on display every night absolutely belong in that category. “A capella group” so vastly underplays what they create onstage that they had to coin a phrase – “Vocal Play” – to more accurately depict what they do. Naturally 7 is more than a tightly orchestrated collection of great singers. They transform their voices into actual human instruments, effortlessly producing music of any genre. Their vocal choreography is so perfectly interwoven that they compelled the musical maestro himself, Quincy Jones, to declare that “Naturally 7 is the future of vocal music!!” Their sonic mastery was on full display in a series of unforgettable performances on “The World’s Best” TV show, which premiered on CBS immediately following Super Bowl LIII. Hosted by comedian and “Car Karaoke” collaborator, James Corden, Naturally 7 reigned supreme as the world’s “Best Group”, and cemented their singular status among the planet’s musical elite.

This was only icing on the cake of a still-vibrant 20-year career, which includes 3 world tours – nearly 500 shows –with the incomparable Michael Bublé, shared billing with global phenomenon Coldplay – including a sold out show at the Barclays Center – and owned the spotlight in a pair of national Cheerios commercials. In addition to Bublé, Naturally 7 has shared the stage with numerous icons, including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Sarah Connor, Lionel Richie, Ludacris, The Roots, and more. Counted among their world-famous fans are President Barack Obama, Will.I.Am., Ellen DeGeneres, Craig Ferguson, Bill and Melinda Gates, Jay Leno, Allan Titchmarsh, Mo’Nique, Jools Holland, and Arsenio Hall, along with countless others.

With the release of their latest project, 20/20, Naturally 7 comes full circle, adding a fresh spin on 20 fan favorites, hand selected by fans the world over. This, their eleventh studio album, celebrates their 20th anniversary in the music industry, giving music lovers all they could hope for, and then some. For the members of Naturally 7 – “Ricky“ Lee Ricardo Cort, Rod Eldridge, Kelvin “Kelz“ Mitchell, Sean Simmonds, Dwight Stewart, Roger Thomas, and Warren Thomas – it’s a privilege to do what they love and bring so much joy to the hearts of their fans each and every night. It’s exactly what you would expect. When something is pure magic it’s destined to withstand the test of time. Naturally…

Naturally 7.

ARGINE SAFARI is the Director of Choirs at Pascack Valley High School in Hillsdale and the Director of Music/Organist at the Christ Lutheran Church in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. Under Mrs. Safari’s direction, Pascack Valley choirs earned numerous awards and accolades, traveling nationally from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles, CA, and internationally to Canada, Italy, and Ireland, where their renditions of Irish songs were played on the national radio. Mrs. Safari has been active as a vocal coach, clinician, conductor, a collaborative pianist, Director of Music (having conducted more than 30 musicals), and has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, or Zankel Hall, among others. She has conducted the Bergen County Choir, the Rockland County Choir, the All-State Opera Chorus, and has worked as a clinician with choirs nationally and internationally. Prior to Pascack Valley, Mrs. Safari was a conductor and pianist at the Grammy award-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus, the children chorus of choice for top orchestras and recording artists from Beyonce & Elton John to The NY Philharmonic & John Adams.

In 2013, Mrs. Safari co-founded a non-profit New Jersey youth theater arts company, Stage Scene and Song Performing Arts (3SPA), with the mission to transform and empower its participants through the arts, and was instrumental in the success of the program which received generous grants from The Winifred M. & George P. Pitkin Foundation and was nominated for several youth theater awards. From January-June 2017, Mrs. Safari served as an educational consultant at the NJ State Department of Education, contributing to the development of the Title I Arts Integration grants program and initiating the ECET2 conference in Princeton, which for the first time focused on the arts education.

Mrs. Safari was named the 2010 Princeton University’s Distinguished Scholar, the 2015-2016 Bergen County Teacher of the Year, the 2017 NJ State Teacher of the Year, the 2017 Evangelina Menendez Trailblazer, the 19th Congressional district inaugural Hometown Hero, the 2018 Lowell Milken Fellow, the 2018 NEA Foundation Awardee for Teaching Excellence, and the 2018 NJEA Art Teacher of the Year. In 2020, Mrs. Safari was featured in Dr. Bilha Fish’s book Invincible Women: Conversations with 21 Inspiring and Successful American Immigrants.

A winner of the US Fulbright Distinguished Teacher Award in 2019, Mrs. Safari taught and conducted music education research at the Sibelius Academy of Music in Helsinki, Finland. From January-July 2019, she presented masterclasses, clinics and seminars, conducted choirs, and facilitated round-table discussions in Finland (Espoo, Helsinki, Jyväskylä, Turku, Vantaa), Russia (Moscow and Sochi), France (Paris), and Germany (Karlsruhe, Erding, and Munich). Mrs. Safari’s most favorite thing in the world is providing her students with the keys —both major and minor—to find their own perfect pitch.
