From The

NJMEA President Welcome to the 2024 NJMEA State Conference! On behalf of our Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for joining us for our 2024 New Jersey Music Educators Association State Conference here in Atlantic City! I’m excited with and proud of the number and scope of headliner clinicians who made our convention a stop on their schedules this year. There truly is something for everyone throughout this three-day event. I applaud you for taking the time to be here and taking advantage of these worthwhile, life-long learning experiences. In an ever-evolving landscape, embracing new methodologies and technologies is essential to nurturing the next generation of musicians. We consider professional development a key offering for our members. My sincere wish is that through your participation in the sessions, performances, exhibits, and networking opportunities, you leave here feeling enthusiastic, rejuvenated, invigorated, and refocused when you return to school next week. As you look through the schedule, please note the additions to our conference. On Thursday, our Student Tech Festival joins us for the first time. Shawna Longo and her team did an incredible job integrating this event into our conference and making it available to our members. On Thursday afternoon, NJMEA’s Honors Modern Band will take the stage under the direction of Dr. Bryan Powell. Zach Gates, our Emerging Ensembles chairperson has done remarkable work in making this goal a reality for us. Our Friday evening concert will feature ensembles from right here in New Jersey! Join us at 7:30pm as we enjoy performances by the Ramsey High School “Ram Jams” and Atlantic Brass Band. On Friday morning, our All-State Treble Choir and Bands will once again perform here in Atlantic City before their performances at the prestigious NJPAC the next day. The concert will also be an opportunity for us to recognize our Master Music Teacher and other award recipients. I hope you will be able to join us for one or both of these performances. I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to Marie Malara, our Conference Chairperson, and her team for dedicating their time and effort in organizing this year’s event. Marie begins her work almost as soon as the current conference ends and has the behemoth task of fitting all these puzzle pieces together. Know that the finished product was the result of countless hours, emails, conversations, and texts over the span of many months. I’d also like to thank to our Executive Director, Bill McDevitt, for his invaluable contributions and support in registration and planning. His wisdom and institutional knowledge are tremendous assets to the Board of Directors. As we celebrate NJMEA’s 100th anniversary, we look fondly on its past while creating, inspiring, and innovating for the future. Use this time to think about and reflect on “what’s next?” for your own teaching and learning. Find the inspiration here that will help propel you forward and that will support our association for another 100 years. I look forward to meeting you during the conference!

Victoria Mozitis

Miss New Jersey 2023 Victoria Mozitis, a 22-year-old resident of Northfield, NJ, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Rider University in 2023, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre, and a minor in Arts and Entertainment Industries Management. She is a Baccalaureate Honors Program Scholar, Rider University Presidential Scholarship Recipient, and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. Victoria’s Community Service Initiative is entitled, “LEAP: Literacy Enhancement, Artistry and Performance”. Literacy is a vital skill needed to communicate effectively, and is imperative to combat poverty, unemployment and more. It is Victoria’s mission to improve literacy worldwide through her partnership with The African Library Project, her school program, and by advocating for arts education. By bringing stories from the page to the stage, we are taking one giant LEAP towards sculpting an intellectual, creative, and united future. During the 2023 Miss New Jersey Competition, Victoria had the honor of receiving the Overall Talent Preliminary Scholarship for her musical theatre vocal performance. Victoria’s professional musical theatre career began at the age of 13 performing in Mary Poppins at The Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. Since then, she has performed the National Anthem at the 2015 US Open Tennis Championship, as Beth in Little Women at The Eagle Theatre, the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, in numerous productions at the Broadway Theatre of Pitman, and soon on The Miss America stage! Throughout her time with Miss America, Victoria has earned a total of $22,450 in scholarships. When not performing, you can find Victoria spending time with family, knitting a new sweater, creating recipes, training for a 5k, or hanging out with her cat, Holly Jolly.

A GUIDE TO VISITING THE EXHIBITS The exhibit area is one of the many highlights of the New Jersey Music Educators Association State Conference. Make sure you save ample time to browse through the exhibit hall. A vast array of products and services of companies from across the United States have gathered for your preview and business. These guidelines may be helpful, particularly to the new music educator: 1. Take note of exhibit hours. Examine the exhibit listings in the program. 2. Note those exhibits of particular interest for your work. 3. There is an abundance of free material. Take only what you deem significant, making sure it is a free sample. 4. Handle display products carefully and return them to their original location. 5. Be sure to register for the mailing lists of companies which carry products in which you are interested. 6. Get to know the sales persons with the companies whose products are a vital part of your work. 7. Enjoy the marvelous panorama of music education products in one location! EXHIBITS
