ou don’t have to be old to remember a world without VCRs...or people living way out in the country without a landline. Now we’re entering an age where your television accesses the internet, you watch movies and answer email on your phone, and you need everything to work together. Richard Machemehl and Scott Crain, owners of Home Theater Evolutions, say “Over the years, we’ve seen some amazing changes in the world of electronics...and we’re here to tell you, the future is now!” Remember when you had to walk across the room to change the channel and if you missed a show, you were out of luck? With the Savant Home Automation system you’ll use your iPhone, laptop, or the iPad controller and immediately control the channels, volume, or the Apple TV from anywhere. Richard says, “The Savant system has an easy-to-navigate controller. We can set you up to review your movies, channels, ondemand, music, and other options. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg!” Back when Disney first opened “Tomorrowland,” a Litton microwave was 1,000 bucks and people cried “Oh my

God” (not OMG) , “it cooks in only a minute!” Think how much times and prices have changed! The same thing is happening with home automation systems. Scott says, “Richard and I like the Savant system because it’s well-designed, user-friendly, and well-priced. Now it’s easy to control the lights, every television in your home or office, your shades or blinds, your music system (including internet radio), and more. There’s even a shortcut feature that allows you to do several things at once, like turning or dimming multiple lights while setting your alarm. You can use the security cameras to monitor your home or business remotely, open or close a garage door, and arm or disarm the alarm. Technology should make your life easier...and Savant does just that. This system speaks to the future of how we live and work today!” Ready to take the leap into tomorrow? Richard says, “Our knowledgeable staff is always current on the latest technologies, and provides affordable solutions to take full advantage of the technologies of today, while providing easy integration into the technologies of tomorrow.”

Take a peek into the locker room of the Rockets, and you’ll get an eyeful...of new age electronics! The entire out-ofthis-world experience was designed and installed by Home Theater Evolutions and uses the Savant Home Automation system. While the players are working out, they can change the music or adjust the volume of the JBL speakers with a touch of an iPhone. State-of-the-art theater chairs give them a well-deserved chance to kick back. iPads control everything, including a touch screen wall display of 9 televisions arranged like tile. Do you want to experience a Rockets game (or Texans, Astros or Dynamo...or even Nascar) like an all-star? Don’t worry about the tickets or the crowds. A comfortable, well-designed home theater makes every game a “home” game. Home Theater Evolutions will get you in the zone!

beautiful kitchen is the welcoming heart of a home. If you’ve been wondering how to choose counters, flooring and tiles that really express your style, All About Carpet and Floors is your one-stop-shop for thoughtful advice, quality products, and expert installation. They’ve been in business for over twenty years of kitchen styles...so we asked them to share the latest trends with us. Choosing a kitchen floor used to be as simple as deciding between tile and linoleum...but today those two choices are just the tip of the iceberg! Renee says, “The flooring in today’s kitchens might be brick, cork, concrete, or wood. In fact, we’re seeing lots of homeowners who love wood for its warm, traditional look and its seamless

flow for open floor plans. More than just oak or pine, we also love maple, cherry, Brazilian cherry and hickory. Today’s wood flooring is well-engineered and treated to be durable, easy-to-clean, and beautiful.” “Granite is one of our favorites for countertops,” says Renee. “Plenty of people go for the luminous, polished ‘granite look,’ but it’s actually granite’s heat-resistance and extreme durability that make it such a great choice for the kitchen. Real granite is still absolutely the best choice for kitchens...and people are often surprised to find it’s more affordable than they thought it would be. Soapstone is a smooth, matte natural stone that comes in a hues ranging from soft grey to charcoal. It isn’t affected by acids, so spilled coffee or orange juice won’t leave a

stain, and it is heat resistant. And Silestone Quartz countertops are not only beautiful... but they’re the only brand that contains a formula developed by Cosentino that uses the latest generation silver ions to prevent bacterial growth.” “At All About Carpet, we love the design possibilities of tile,” says Shaun. “The use of stone mosaics is a growing trend among today’s kitchen tile ideas, especially because mosaic tiles immediately draw the eye and enhance the entire design of your kitchen. You can have them installed over every wall of the kitchen or in a few specific areas like over the stove or around the sink. And floor tiles can vary from wood looks made from porcelain to clean looking cement or colorful stone looks. A popular trend today is the use of larger rectangular tiles on the floor. If you want to make a statement with tiles, we can custom-create a design for you, use brightly colored tiles to outline a window or accent a nook, or create a beautiful backsplash.” “We’ll design and install kitchens, bathrooms, and flooring in any room of your house,” say Renee, Shaun, and Steven McKelvey and Damian. “All About Carpet and Flooring is your one-stop-shop for tile, hardwood, laminate, countertops, and all the things that come together to make your house into a home. We promise personal attention, design advice, an easy-to-understand quote, and installation you can trust!” All About Carpet and Floors 281-265-3700 3145 Highway 6 South (next to Shipley’s) www.allaboutcarpet.com

HEALTHY VEINS Varicose Vein Treatment Changes Lives!

“F Amy Sharp

An Easy Choice

ifteen years ago, I had vein stripping surgery done on a varicose vein. It was large and ugly, started at my thigh, was really bad on my knee and worked its way down my leg,” says Houston resident, Kathleen Kruger. “The procedure was extremely painful, leaving me bedridden for a couple of days and unable to exercise at all for six weeks. And much to my dismay, the vein came back!” Though she wasn’t in physical pain, the vein was painfully unattractive for Kathleen. “I started to wear pants all the time,” says Kathleen. “Dresses and shorts were no longer part of my wardrobe.” But when Kathleen’s General Practitioner saw the vein, he thought it was much more than a cosmetic problem...and thought it needed treatment. This time Kathleen did her homework. “I know there are no guarantees, but I wanted something less invasive, less painful, and more likely to not fail. And I was looking for the procedure to be covered by insurance.” Kathleen’s case landed in the skilled hands of vascular surgeon, Dr. Ulises Baltazar, 4 ~ UPCLOSE ~ October 2013

MD. “Dr. Baltazar was great,” says Kathleen. “He was very straightforward and honest about what he could do, and took time to make sure I understood the problem and all my options.”

I literally took a walk down my street that same afternoon. There was no pain, just a mild twinge here and there reminding me that something had been done to my leg.

working properly, insurance covered the procedure!” Post procedure, Kathleen was shocked by how great she felt. “Unlike the first time I had the vein treated, this time was so easy! I literally took a walk down my street that same afternoon. There was no pain, just a mild twinge here and there reminding me that something had been done to my leg. And I was completely back to normal in a couple of days. The vein is now 90% smaller than it was when I stepped into Dr. Baltazar’s office. If I had known how easy it could be, I would have gotten the treatment done years ago!” Board-certified in Vascular Surgery with a reputation that is second to none, Dr. Baltazar has been treating diseases of the arteries and veins for more than a decade. “I would absolutely and without reservation recommend Dr. Baltazar to anyone,” says Kathleen, “He is wonderful!”

“Treating varicose veins has become less-invasive and much easier for patients,” says Dr. Baltazar. “Kathleen’s doctor was right to recommend repeat treatment on the vein. What may seem like a cosmetic problem is actually a vascular health problem. When the valves in your veins are unhealthy, blood can then flow backward and pool inside the vein, and then it swells... leading to venous diseases like spider veins, varicose veins and venous stasis ulcers. ince she works as a hairdresser, Leticia sees women of all shapes and sizes. She says, “I really wanted to get a tummy tuck, so I started talking to my clients who’d had one. I knew I wanted a slim, curvy look, not a boxy one, but I never saw a tummy tuck that made me want to go through the procedure! I kept waiting to see ‘the right one’...and then my husband’s cousin went to Dr. Ahmadi of Avante Plastic Surgery for a Lipotuck™. I knew her before the procedure, I saw her go through the recovery process, and I thought she looked so slim and beautiful afterwards. Finally, a procedure and a doctor I really liked!” “I recommended Dr. Ahmadi to several of my clients. Two of them got Lipotuck™ with him...and they were so happy. I knew he was the doctor I’d been trying so hard to find. Going through the initial consultation with Dr. Ahmadi filled me with confidence. I had gone through consultations with other doctors who dismissed my concerns and told me how easy everything would be. That just made me nervous. Dr. Ahmadi

answered all my questions directly and told me the real story. He treats his patients with respect and understanding. Knowing he was telling me the truth made all the difference. If you can’t even trust a doctor during the initial consultation, how can you trust him to do the surgery? Dr. Ahmadi is so honest and caring...I knew he had my best interests and my health at heart.” Experience makes all the difference and Dr. Ahmadi has done hundreds of Lipotuck™ procedures...a procedure he himself perfected. He believes in educating each patient and answering questions ahead of time. Dr. Ahmadi says, “I don’t get midnight phone calls from panicked patients, because I’ve already addressed their concerns. When patients know what to expect, they can better visualize their outcomes...and then we all sleep better at night!” Being prepared gave Leticia confidence. She says, “My husband’s cousin had a straightforward recovery...and so did I. Since then I’ve sent so many people to Dr. Ahmadi. I tell them, ‘Just meet with him for a consultation and you’ll see the kind of doctor he truly is.’ Now I have the body I always wanted to have...thanks to Dr. Ahmadi and his Lipotuck™!” If you want the best body, you need the best doctor. Dr. Ahmadi is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to provide all aspects of cosmetic surgery. He says, “We’ll do an evaluation, discuss your options, and get you all the information you need. My signature procedure, the Lipotuck™, delivers the combined benefits of both a tummy tuck and liposuction for a curvy, natural silhouette you’ll love!

“There are few restrictions on your life with asthma, as long as you take care of yourself.”

~Jackie Joyner-Kersee

D

id you know? In the United States, asthma affects almost 25 million Americans, sending over a million people to the emergency room and resulting in almost half a million hospitalizations and over three thousand asthma-related deaths. As a pulmonologist, board-certified in Pulmonary Medicine, Sleep Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine, Dr. J. Georges Youssef treats any diseases or conditions that might keep your body from accessing the air you need for a healthy life. “Some patients find their asthma is well controlled with medication,” he says, “but other patients need even more help. If you’ve been living with persistent asthma which isn’t well controlled by your inhaled corticosteroids or long-acting beta-agonists, there’s another option. Bronchial Thermoplasty is a FDAapproved, drug-free procedure that can reduce the frequency of asthma attacks...and get you

back to your life.” Wheezing, gasping, panic, and anxiety come with an asthma attack. Dr. Youssef says, “The underlying cause of severe asthma is an excess of smooth muscle tissue lining the airways. During an asthma attack, this muscle constricts the airways, making breathing difficult...and that’s a terrifying feeling. Bronchial Thermoplasty reduces the amount of excess muscle and helps minimize the narrowing of your airways during an asthma attack. If you are over eighteen, already on asthma medication, and are still missing work or school or ending up in the emergency room or hospital due to severe allergy attacks, Bronchial Thermoplasty can dramatically improve your quality of life.” “The treatment consists of three procedures performed over a nine week period. Most patients are released from the hospital the same day of the procedure. With the Bronchial Thermoplasty treatment, controlled thermal energy is applied to the smooth muscle in the airways. This thermal energy reduces excessive airway smooth muscle, so

you can breathe more easily. Each treatment session lasts about an hour and we’ll monitor you for the next two to four hours. The most common side effect is a temporary worsening of asthma symptoms. After the final treatment, we expect your asthma medications to be sufficient to control your asthma...so you can enjoy your normal activities without fear!” Asthma doesn’t have a cure, but it can be controlled! Dr. Youssef says, “In a clinical trial, almost 79% of patients treated with BT reported significant improvements in their asthma-related quality of life—including a reduction in asthma attacks, ER visits and hospitalizations for respiratory symptoms, and fewer days lost from work, school, and other daily activities due to asthma. I want all my patients to enjoy living their lives...without worrying about every single breath they take!” J. Georges Youssef, M.D. 713-781-4600 1429 Hwy. 6 South, Ste 303 Sugar Land, TX 77478

hether you have a little princess or a soccer star, children’s rooms have their own design challenges. Caron and Candelario Lopez, owners of Grand Windows and Interiors, say, “Creating rooms that reflect your child’s personality motivate a child to follow their dreams, hobbies, and sports...and we’ll show you that safety, learning, and style really can go hand-in-hand.” Caron was a science teacher and studied Museum Science Design in college...so she can come up with some very inspiring children’s rooms! Caron says “Even with my own children’s rooms, I wish I changed them more often - they grow up so fast!” Daughter Allyson, now 16, jazz musician and aspiring architect, is busy creating her new room with Caron, integrating lots of textures, metallics and color. For a child’s room, window treatments should have no loose or looped pull cords and wands should be out of your child’s reach. Caron says, “You don’t have to choose between style and safety. Hunter Douglas offers cordless manual and motorized operating systems, retractable lift cords for enhanced child and pet safety and easy operation. These systems are safer, and look more sleek and streamlined. In our spacious showroom, you can choose from the latest colors and styles in blinds, shades, shutters, and more with complete peace of mind.”

Your kids are full of energy, fun, and imagination...and their bedrooms should be, too! Caron says, “We can go with wild, vibrant colors, or keep it simple and classic. There are all kinds of options from chalkboard paint to magnetic wall coverings, ways to rethink study and sleep space, and things we can do to make a child’s room user-friendly and full of memories-in-the-making.” In addition to being the Leading Draper in our area, Grand Windows and Interiors can also create bedding or cushions to tie the look together. Caron and Joni team up to give expert advice for a change of color on the walls, hand painted murals and faux painting, and reupholster or even customcreate furniture and headboards. Caron says, “Whether you have an infant, a toddler, a tween or a teen, we want their room to express their personality. We’ll listen to you, offer our suggestions, and create a safe and stylish room. Classic Chevrolet Preowned Sales Managers Stuart McMillan and Emmett Waldron say, “That’s why Don Kerstetter came up with the ‘Drive Forever’ program. safety and quality of our pre-owned cars very seriously. We certify all the vehicles we can but each and every one of the vehicles we sell goes through our comprehensive inspection process. GM certified vehicles meet strict eligibility requirements, receive a comprehensive inspection, undergo a reconditioning process and come with a warranty…but Don thought we could offer our customers even more with the Classic Drive Forever Program.” Never satisfied with “good enough,” the team at Classic Chevy was determined to offer “the best”...and the “Classic Drive Forever” program was born. Emmett says, “Under this program when you buy a pre-owned car from Classic, we cover the engine and transmission for as long as you drive it. Almost every car on our lot qualifies for either our GM certified warranty or the Classic Drive Forever program. Don believes in taking care of people, making a positive impression, correcting mistakes as soon as they happen, and keeping the focus

on Classic culture, where it’s all about the customer. ‘Drive Forever’ isn’t a GM program...it’s a Classic program!” You’ve always been able to shop worryfree at Classic Chevy. Well-lighted driveways, open, inviting buildings, and lowpressure, friendly service inspire confidence. Emmett says, “Everyone on our sales team is knowledgeable, down-toearth, and a real character. Not only that, but we’re empowered to handle your whole transaction from start to finish …without any running back and forth to some hidden room. We have competitive financing available, and we’re here to help you find exactly what you’re looking for!” Now you can drive worry-free with the lifetime limited powertrain warranty from Classic Chevy. Don says,

“Drive Forever covers the engine and transmission on each of our eligible, thoroughly inspected pre-owned vehicles forever. Coverage begins immediately and runs as long as you own the vehicle. When we run our cars through rigorous inspections and provide warranty programs...it’s because we’re thinking of the families who’ll be driving them. Speak to Me.Hablemos.Parlons.Parunasim

Sarah Warburton n 2011 Fort Bend was ranked the fourth most racially-diverse county in the United States by USA Today. If you’re one of the hundreds of bilingual families here, you may have some questions for Jason and Dana Johnson, owners of Speech Therapy Unlimited. Dana says, “October is “Celebrating the Bilingual Child Month” and we talk to plenty of parents who aren’t sure how they’ll know if their bilingual children have speech or language issues. We hear plenty of myths and misinformation….but we’re here to give you answers and all the help you need!” What’s the number one question Dana and Jason hear? Is my bilingual child more likely to develop a speech disorder? “Nope,” says Jason. “According to the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA), bilingual children should generally hit language milestones at a rate that is on target for their age level. They may switch back and forth between languages in the same sentence or use the grammar of one language when speaking in another, but that’s normal. The most important thing for parents and other adults to do is to model correct speech in whichever language you are speaking with your child.” How do you know if your bilingual child does have a speech problem? Dana says, “If your child

I

does not reach language milestones, that’s a good time for an evaluation. Some children raised bilingual do take a little longer to start talking, but it’s not a general rule. Two and three-year-old children who have a very limited vocabulary in either language and don’t combine words into phrases and sentences should also

be evaluated. If a child cannot be understood at school, then come in for an evaluation.” Raising a bilingual child is a family effort. Dana says, “We also offer accent modification for adults. Jason and I have assembled an outstanding team of speech therapists, so we can find the perfect fit for you and your family. If you have any concerns or need any help...come and speak to us!”

Big corporate companies may try to lure you in with coupons or fancy promises...but the final price is often still twice as expensive as you might have paid elsewhere. If a big company shows you their “Price Book,” you should know that it only shows the prices that company charges, not a universally charged fair price. Some of those other companies even feature random happy families in their ads to make you think they’re a family-owned business. Take a good look at the photo for Alan’s Plumbing...because those are the faces you’ll see when they show up to fix your plumbing problems!

Ruben says, “I’ve always believed in giving people our honest opinion. If your roof doesn’t need any work done, we’d love to be the first to tell you. Keeping Your Countertops Current

Sarah Warburton our countertops make the biggest impact on the overall look of your kitchen. Maybe it’s time to ask yourself, “What do my countertops say about me?” After all, today’s trendy is tomorrow’s ugly and what looked like a magazine spread in 1988 makes you a little sick to your stomach in 2013. Jonee and Paul Barnett of Miracle Method Surface Refinishing say, “Getting gorgeous countertops takes only a day or two with our little miracle. We’re happy to say that the Miracle Method transforms tile, cultured marble, Corian®, Formica®, Wilsonart® and other laminate countertops…without ripping them out!” One local woman had been living with old white formica countertops. Miracle Method updated the look of her entire kitchen by giving those countertops rounded edges and the look of beige stone...thanks to Miracle Method’s Natural Accents™ finish. Natural Accents™ delivers the multi-colored appearance and texture of stone at a fraction of the cost. Paul says, “We can apply it to countertops and tiles for a seamless, non-porous, heat-resistant and scratch-resistant surface. Now our new Quartz Highlights finish can be applied after the

Natural Accents™ for the additional sparkle and depth of real stone. You can see the difference it makes in the “before and after” photos on our website!” After two decades of living with her “fake butcher block” countertops, another woman was ready for a change. Imagine her shock when she saw the sample countertop Jonee brought out. Half of it had been refinished using the Miracle Method... but the “before” was exactly the same as her actual countertops! In a single day the Miracle Method team transformed her old countertops using Natural Accents™ in the color “Landslide” with black, gray and white to pick up the floors and the black and white appliances. Her kitchen dropped twenty years in less than twenty hours! Even if you still love the color of your counters, they may be showing their age in other ways. Imagine the place where you dropped a mug and left a chip or crack–gone! The discoloration from a hot pan or a water ring on your counter–vanished! The Miracle Method doesn’t just change the look of your surface...it extends the life of your counters by ten to fifteen years. That’s an easy, effective miracle! Jonee says, “Paul and I live with Miracle Method in our home, so we really know the product inside and out. Call us for your free estimate, give us just a few days and we’ll give you a beautiful kitchen or bathroom that looks like new!”

o you have a Hollywood Smile or are you rockin’ Fifty Shades of Grey? Stained, discolored teeth add years to your face. Luckily, it’s an easy fix with a little professional help. Dr. Thomas Lomonte says, “Sometimes patients think their choices are to live with discolored teeth or get teeth so white they’d glow in the dark. Actually, a shade charts lets us choose the most naturally appealing shade for you. A change of just two or three shades makes a real difference. Whitening can lighten your smile nine or more shades, but most people achieve the look they want with a change of just two to seven shades. I recommend in-office Colgate Visible White to remove both surface and embedded stains from teeth...for a smile that’s several shades lighter in a single treatment!” If you want a dentist who’ll go the extra smile for you, Dr. Lomonte’s your

Whether you choose whitening, the affordable and effective Snap-On Smile, veneers or implants, his office is your one-stopshop for smile solutions. Dr. Lomonte says, “We believe in really getting to know our patients, taking our time to explain all the options, and helping your maximize your benefits so you get the best results for the best price.” Speaking of benefits, you paid for those insurance benefits, but did you use them? If you don’t use ‘em by December 31st, 2013, you’ll lose ‘em and there is no guarantee what next year’s benefits will be. Dr. Lomonte says, “Most insurance plans allow two free cleanings per year for your dental health. If you haven’t used your benefits or you need dental work, call now, before the busy holiday season

f you want a roof that will stand the test of time, you need a roofing company with knowledge and experience. “We’ll deal with installers, insurance companies, materials companies, mortgage firms, OSHA, state government, and of course Uncle Sam,” says Houston Restoration Services owner John Sanders. “I’ve been in the roofing business since 1984. Through experience, I learned how to find and use only the best, most reliable installers, roofing products and best installation methods. That’s the only definite recipe for success! We’d like you to know you can trust your roof to us!” After almost thirty continuous years of business later, HRS and John are still trusted and preferred by the people of South Texas. John says, “Our focus is protecting your home, your possessions, and your family from the rain, wind, sun, and dampness that are all part of our local Texas weather...plus you should always be hurricane ready! Your roof is your home’s first and most important line of defense… and it requires a Texas roofing company with the right skills and experience. Even a slightly damaged roof could cost you hundreds in energy and leave your home exposed. That’s why we offer free, no obligation roof inspections and evaluations.” Expect the best with HRS, BBB-accredited since 2007. They are one of only fifteen (out of 7,000!) GAF Master Elite certified roofing companies in the greater Houston area. ave you heard of the Tooth Fairy’s friend, the Halloween Fairy? Dr. Bianca Sanchez of Little People’s Dentistry says, “Some parents tell me that if you leave your bag of candy out for the Halloween Fairy, she’ll magically turn it into a toy! Since the Tooth Fairy knows that candy is not a good choice for strong and sparkly teeth, she’s thrilled with this plan...and parents who are concerned about nutrition and safety love it, too!” Scare away cavities and tooth decay by taking care to clean your teeth! At home kids can brush their teeth after eating. When they’re out and about, make sure they drink water after they finish eating. Adults can be trusted to choose sugar-free gum to chew after a meal, but kids can’t tell the difference between gum that’s okay and gum that’s full of sugar and hard as a rock. It’s just easier and healthier to choose water over gum. Ghosts and goblins, creepers and monsters...what scares Dr. Sanchez? She says, “The scariest thing to me is candy that’s hard or super-sticky! Jawbreakers and hard candies chip your teeth. Sticky, gummy candies like caramels, taffy, jellybeans, and licorice cling to teeth, are really hard to brush off, and can eat away at your enamel in the night.” “I don’t want your children to be scared of the dentist,” says Dr. Sanchez. “I want them to beg to come back again and again!” Anytime during the month of October bring your little monster (or princess or cowboy or alien) to Little People’s Dentistry for a checkup...and don’t forget that costume! Dr. Sanchez says, “We’ll take a picture and enter you in our Little Monsters Costume Contest. The winner will be announced at the end of the month! As an extra bonus, on Thursday, October 31st, my staff and I will dress up and let the kids vote for their favorite costume. We take Halloween fun very seriously!”

It’s Hard To Stop A Trane

Becca Bragg

What do the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Monument, and the St. Louis Arch have in common? You’ll find a Trane air conditioner in every single one of these American landmarks. “When you think about it, Trane is a classic American success story,” says Brian Jackson of Jackson Air. “In 1885, founder James Trane opened a plumbing shop and invented the Trane Vapor Heating System. His son Reuben, an engineer, worked with his father to create the Trane Company in 1913. Now 100 years later, Trane is trusted around the world to deliver reliable comfort. At Jackson Air, we’re the oldest Trane Comfort Specialists in Sugar Land. We’ve been here for thirty-one years and we plan to be around to celebrate a century of service to Fort Bend!”

24 ~ UPCLOSE ~ October 2013

As a teenager, Brian Jackson worked alongside his dad Johnny, who founded Jackson Air in 1982. He says, “We learned early on that there was a big difference in quality and reliability in air conditioners. We soon teamed up with Trane out of Tyler, TX. Trane has the quality, reliability and technology needed in the hot humid Texas summers, and that keeps our customers comfortable, safe and happy.” Times may change, but the important things stay the same! Brian says, “Whether it’s service, repair or replacement, we’ll always believe in treating the customer right and doing whatever it takes to make them happy. This is why most of our new customers are referred by existing customers.” “Our award-winning service comes with award-winning air conditioners,” adds Brian. “We’re EPA and NATE certified and repeat winners of the Angie’s List “Super Service” award and the BBB Award of Excellence. Over the last century Trane’s racked up innovations and

awards. Recently American women rated Trane as the best home air conditioning and heating brand. In back-to-back years, WomenCertified® awarded Trane the 2013 Women’s Choice Award® in the HVAC Systems Category. We know we can trust Trane to make our customers happy!” “At Jackson Air, Fort Bend is our home, we consider our customers to be our friends and neighbors, and Trane is our air conditioner of choice. f heel pain makes walking easier said than done, see what’s at the bottom of your symptoms and find relief with a specialist! Dr. Marco A Vargas is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and an expert in foot biomechanics, the study of the structure and function of the foot. Instead of just eliminating heel pain with medication, injections and store-bought shoe inserts (only part of the treatment), Dr. Vargas also focuses on improving foot function so that your relief is permanent! Do you need an alternative to orthotics? Dr. Vargas is one of only two doctors certified in the greater Houston area to offer the HyProCure foot stent procedure. Dr. Vargas says, “The HyProCure is a stent that is placed in the foot like an ‘implantable orthotic,’ to help improve foot biomechanics or function and eliminates the need for orthotics. It takes less than ten minutes to perform the procedure and has been performed on patients of all ages, from age three to ninety...and all activity levels including long distance runners, basketball players, ballerinas and more. Patients can

walk in a surgical shoe immediately and are back in regular shoes in about two weeks. This is a particularly effective solution for active patients, those who like to wear sandals or high heels, or those who simply don’t want to wear orthotics.” You don’t want to run all over town or keep going back to the doctor year after year for the same old heel pain. Dr. Vargas founded the heel pain center at Foot and Ankle Associates as a “one-stop-shop” to include all of the necessary tests and equipment needed to diagnose and treat heel pain. From digital X-ray, musculoskeletal ultrasound and physical therapy to Footmaxx, a computerized foot scanner used to analyze a patient’s walking pattern and foot function, patients don’t need to go anywhere else to get better... and stay that way! He says, “We also offer the K-Laser, which can eliminate heel pain symptoms in as few as 4 treatments. Whether you run all over town with your kids, work standing up, or are a professional athlete, I believe in banishing pain for good!”

oes your house actually fit the way you live? “Your family shouldn’t have to conform to someone else’s floor plan,” says Teri Gilberg, the Re-Modelista. “Your formal dining room could be a study, your patio have an outdoor kitchen, or your office could be changed into an extra bedroom. Think of me as your Get-It-Done Diva...with the contacts and the contractors to make remodeling easy and fun!” If your family doesn’t fit in your postage-stamp-sized formal dining room, it’s time for a change. Teri says, “Plenty of clients realize they need a home office or a study...and the formal dining room is the perfect space. If you have a room in your house that isn’t being used, then it isn’t working for you. Think about the last time you actually used your formal dining room as more than a storage space. How often would you use a study, a craft room, or an office? If you need to go in the other direction, we can take a study or office and transform it into an extra bedroom. During our consultation, just walk me around, tell me what you need, and I’ll help you reimagine your rooms!” What’s the best way to accommodate all your friends and family for 26 ~ UPCLOSE ~ October 2013

Every Family Needs a Friend Like This!

“A

bout thirteen years ago when I moved back to the Houston area,” says local mom Renata Codianne, “a friend recommended Dr. Anh Doan of Vision Source. She was always wonderful to me...and to my entire family. My husband Jason is a cyclist who’s always worn glasses. Dr. Doan helped him switch to contact lenses and really took the time to get him a good fit and take care of any issues with dry eyes.” “When our oldest daughter was in Kindergarten, we were told she needed glasses. Friends asked if we would take her to a pediatric optometrist, but I couldn’t imagine trusting anyone more than Dr. Doan. She was so gentle with Emma...and calmed me down, too! Now that Emma’s ten, she swims and rides horses competitively. Dr. Doan walked her through getting contacts lenses. One of my favorite things about Dr. Doan is that she’s a parent, too and always knows the right thing to say. I was very anxious, but Dr. Doan told me, “You cannot do this for Emma. All you need to do is step away and let us take care of her. It’s all going to be okay.” Emma came out later just beaming with pride. She’s also thrilled she learned to put her contact in more quickly than her dad did!”

“I see Dr. Doan for my glasses and for my yearly checkup. She’s got a gift for choosing frames that fit your personality. Her medical expertise is just as wonderful. About two years ago I had scary thing...an ulcer on my eye! Dr. Doan saw me right away, knew how to treat the problem, and now it’s just a tiny scar that doesn’t affect my vision.” “When my youngest started Kindergarten, I brought her to Dr. Doan...and found out she doesn’t need glasses. Whether we see Dr. Doan once a year or four times a year, she always knows exactly where we are in our lives. She remembers what the girls are doing and takes the time to ask questions and really listen. She’s always smiling, and knowing her makes all of us smile too. When you have a family optometrist like Dr. Doan, it’s like having a family friend!” Dr. Anh Doan, O.D. ~ Vision Source! 281-261-2647 4725 Highway 6 South www.visionsource-missouricity.com

An Experienced, Family-Owned Wheel Store

“B

ack in 1998, my father saw a prosperous business opportunity in Rosenberg and took advantage of it to build our company to what it is today,” says Ana Prado, daughter of Oscar at Oscar’s Tire Center. “With constant perseverance, he had a goal set to make a successful, friendly business that focused on getting drivers safely on the road.” Today, with a second location across from the Stafford Centre, the Prado family still serves the families of Fort Bend County, as well as travelers all across Texas, with top-of-the-line wheels, tires, accessories and wheel repair. Oscar and his family have you covered if you’re in the market for new, custom wheels. “From high-end, luxury wheels to off-road, we have a huge selection in inventory,” says Ana, “and if we don’t have it in stock, we can generally find what you are looking for on the same day.” When your wheels need a little improvement, just bring them by the store. Straightening, re-finishing, re-polishing, restoring, and repairing damaged wheels are part of the services available at Oscar’s. Oscar’s Tire Center can help every driver in your family. “We have over 2,400 square feet of inventory,” Ana says. “We sell passenger, off-road, and low profile tires in all of the brands you trust—including Toyo, Goodyear, Michelin, Bridgestone, Vogue, Nitto, and many more. Our shops are equipped to mount and balance tires and rims from 12 to 32 inches.” If you need a more affordable option, Ana says, “One of our more popular options is our used tires. It’s a great choice for drivers on a budget.”

The Prado family has kept their business successful mostly due to their friendly, personal service. Ana, a graduate of Terry High School, and her brother Oscar, a graduate of Lamar Consolidated, operate the store in Stafford. Dad—Oscar—still runs the original store in Rosenberg. “My family’s number one priority has always been customer service,” says Ana. “We’re successful because we treat all our customers like family.”

Getting the Best Confidence Builder “S

ince I’ve got a daughter in college and two grandbabies, I work double-shifts Monday through Friday at UPS,” says Leonard Andrews. “Every year they have a health fair out in the parking lot with all the different medical providers we could choose. EcoDental is always there. When I was ready to move up in the company, I needed a real confidence builder, a strong smile. I was sitting at home thinking about it and I just picked up the phone and called for a Saturday appointment.” “I told Dr. Nguyen what I wanted, they took x-rays, and he determined what I would need to get that winning smile. When he reviewed my x-rays he said we’d start by treating the cause of my bad breath. He gave me six extractions and a deep cleaning on my first visit. I came back two weeks later for him to check my healing. I also had a gold tooth I needed gone. He removed that and filed and prepped my teeth for veneers. The look was really coming together. He gave me false teeth so I could eat and get through my daily routine, while I waited for the

veneers to be made.” “When he put my new teeth on I looked one hundred and ten percent different! I’ve gotten lots of compliments from my family and friends and co-workers. I’ve been smiling ever since. The experience was so overwhelming that when I got out to my car, I cried a little. You live your whole life thinking this is just the way you’re going to look...but the change a strong smile can make is amazing!” “I would recommend anyone serious about getting a good smile to go to EcoDental. The whole office is state of the art. You can relax and listen to an iPod while the work’s being done. Dr. Nguyen’s assistants Adria and Natalie are so friendly and his wife is just wonderful. They really care about their profession. They also know how to work with insurance, so I didn’t have any hassle at all. Now I don’t take my smile for granted. EcoDental literally changed my life!” Dr. Danny Nguyen, D. D. S. ~ Ecodental 281-491-9494 15870 SW Freeway #500 (59@Hwy 6 next to Whole Foods) Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.ecodentalgroup.com
