Americans are affected by

Movement

Disorders

ovement disorders are caused by neurological conditions that interrupt communications between a patient’s brain and his or her muscles and nerves,” says Dr. Toby Yaltho of Methodist Sugar Land Neurology Associates. “The alteration of these signals impacts the strength, speed, coordination and balance that are needed for even the simplest motion or activity – which we take for granted until there is a problem.” Dr. Yaltho, who joined Methodist Sugar Land Neurology Associates in October, brings a comprehensive approach to the treatment of movement disorders for patients in Fort Bend and surrounding areas. With over six years of experience treating movement disorders, now patients no longer have to travel to the Medical Center for experienced, knowledgeable care. “Movement disorders are serious, often progressive conditions that greatly impact a patient’s ability to perform even routine functions,” says Dr. Yaltho, who is board certified in neurology and sleep medicine and fellowship trained in movement disorders and neurophysiology. “Fortunately, we have a number of treatment options today that can help relieve symptoms and improve a patient’s quality of life.” “Some movement disorders respond well to medications,” says Dr. Yaltho. For example, antiepileptic medications, beta-blockers and benzodiazepine medications help many patients. In addition, injection therapy using botulinum toxin (also known as Botox) can be effective in blocking the release of neurotransmitters that cause muscle contraction. Many patients receive these injections quarterly to help limit unwanted movements. In some patients, surgery is required. Deep brain stimulation involves the implantation of electrodes into the brain and a small device similar to a pacemaker that delivers an electrical charge to alter nerve signals in the brain that trigger abnormal movement.

Movement disorders: A closer look Movement disorders can make it difficult for sufferers to perform even the most basic daily tasks. Dr. Toby Yaltho of Methodist Sugar Land Neurology Associates treats the full range of movement disorders, including:

“The proper treatment of movement disorders requires a great deal of coordination and communication between physician and patient,” says Dr. Yaltho. “I work directly with my patients to develop a treatment plan that is appropriate for their unique condition and situation. We begin with the least invasive approach possible. I follow my patients closely and make adjustments as necessary.” Dr. Yaltho says that despite recent advancements, some patients still aren’t aware of the progress that has been made in treating movement disorders. “It’s important to remember that we can help most patients,” he says. “Seeing an experienced specialist who understands available treatment options can make all the difference.” Methodist Sugar Land Neurology Associates is located on the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus, in Medical Office Building Two. Dr. Yaltho and his associates Dr. Larry Tran, Dr. Carisa Liew and Dr. Eddie Patton Jr. offer diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of neurological disorders including migraines, sleep disorders, epilepsy, dementia, complex spine and peripheral neurological disorders, neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders and more. ®

Ataxia – A neurological condition that affects the part of the brain that controls coordinated movement (cerebellum). Dystonia – A neurological condition in which muscles contract involuntarily and may cause twisting and repetitive movements. Essential Tremor – A neurological condition that causes involuntary shaking; hands are often affected, but other parts of the body also may be affected. Huntington’s Disease – An inherited progressive, neurodegenerative disorder that causes certain nerve cells in the brain to deteriorate. This condition may cause uncontrolled movements, decreased thinking abilities and emotional and mental health disturbances. Multiple System Atrophy – An uncommon, progressive neurological disorder that affects many areas of the brain and nervous system and frequently impairs body systems that modulate blood pressure, heart rate and bladder function. Myoclonus – A condition that causes sudden, jerky movements, twitching, or intermittent spasms of a muscle or group of muscles. Parkinson’s Disease – A progressive neurological disorder that affects movement and may cause shaking (tremor), muscle stiffness (rigidity), slowing of movement, impaired balance or other symptoms. Progressive Supranuclear Palsy – A rare neurological disorder that causes problems with walking, balance and eye movements. It resembles Parkinson’s disease but is a distinct condition. Restless Legs Syndrome – Unpleasant, abnormal feelings in the legs while relaxing or lying down. Symptoms are often relieved by movement. Tardive Dyskinesia – A neurological condition caused by long-term use of certain drugs used to treat psychiatric or other medical conditions. Tardive dyskinesia causes repetitive and involuntary movements such as grimacing, eye blinking and other movements. Tourette Syndrome – A neurological condition that starts between childhood and teenage years and is associated with repetitive movements and vocal sounds (tics). Wilson’s Disease – An inherited (genetic) disorder that causes excessive amounts of copper to build up in the body, causing neurological problems.

Safe Travels! by Sarah Warburton

After two surgeries on her foot and a flight from New York to Los Angeles, tennis star Serena Williams was rushed to the hospital after a DVT in 2011. Early diagnosis and treatment led to a full recovery...and she was ranked number one in the world in 2013.

re you gearing up for holiday travel? Whether you’re traveling by plane, train, or automobile, take care to avoid a hidden danger that affects thousands of people each year. Local Vascular Surgeon, Ulises Baltazar MD, RVT, FACS says, “No matter how you travel, sitting motionless for long periods may put you at an increased risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot in a vein deep within your muscles. If a blood clot breaks free from your deep veins, it can travel through the bloodstream and become fatal.” Maybe you’ve heard DVT called “economy class syndrome,” but sitting cramped in the backseat of a car or even driving for hours without stopping can increase your risk. Dr. Baltazar explains, “Poor blood flow in the veins of your legs increases the risk for DVT...and pushing a gas pedal isn’t enough to help. When you walk around an airport terminal or highway rest stop or do leg and foot exercises while sitting, the muscles in your legs squeeze the veins and move blood to the heart. Be sure to drink plenty of fluid and limit coffee and alcohol. Studies also show that wearing compression stockings may help minimize the risk of developing DVT. In addition to extended traveling, your risk of DVT may be elevated if you have had surgery,

a heart attack, stroke or congestive heart failure, a broken hip or leg, inherited blood clotting abnormalities or cancer. You also have a greater chance of developing DVT if you are obese, are pregnant, nursing or taking birth control pills, or have inflammatory bowel disease.” After two surgeries on her foot and a flight from New York to Los Angeles, tennis star Serena Williams was rushed to the hospital after a DVT in 2011. Early diagnosis and treatment led to a full recovery...and she was ranked number one in the world in 2013. “Unfortunately,” says Dr. Baltazar, “DVT is often unrecognized because it often doesn’t happen until after you have traveled. The clots that form in the veins of your leg typically start coming off in little pieces a few days later...so it appears you are having a heart attack.” According to USA Today, in 2003 journalist and “Today” show co-anchor David Bloom was covering the war in Iraq, traveling for long periods of time in very cramped conditions. Although he complained of pain and cramping in his leg behind the knee, he didn’t seek treatment. Three days later he collapsed and died from a blood clot from his DVT at just age 39. That’s the worst case scenario...the kind of tragedy Dr. Baltazar is dedicating to preventing. He says, “If you are concerned that you may suffer from Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT), come see me. After a physical exam, I may order a duplex ultrasound test or a venogram test to confirm diagnosis. Since one of the warning signs of DVT is varicose veins, I’m always careful to examine all my patients to make sure their circulatory system is working as it should.”

any people don’t realize they have absolute discretion over which pharmacist to use,” says Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm. D., R.Ph. of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy. “Texas law guarantees you that choice. When one patient, one physician, and one pharmacist work together to keep you in peak running condition, that is an unbeatable triad. The ‘three Ps’ is what I call it. Whether your goal is to look younger, feel better, or keep your family healthy over the holidays, by working together, we can help you accomplish those goals.” Just recently, keeping his own family well has become even more of an exciting challenge. Dr. Campbell and his wife welcomed the addition of baby Claire, who with her sisters Chloe and Caitlyn and brother Cole, bring their own joy to the holidays. “That’s yet another benefit to compounded pharmaceuticals,” says Dr. Campbell. “All 8 ~ UPCLOSE ~ November 2014

too often, children are prescribed smaller “guesstimated” dosages of adult medications, which may or may not be height/weight appropropriate for them. The operative word in compounding is custom design. We can “edit out” fillers or dyes, change the flavor, or create a gel, a cream, a pill, a gummie, or even a lollipop form of medication. Compounded medications aren’t mass-produced approximations. They’re specific to your family’s needs.” Think about how careful you are in choosing the right vitamins or shoes or even juice boxes for your kids. You and your family deserve that same care from your pharmacist. Next Stop...St. Michael’s!

Saving You from Holiday Stress

W

hen you’re celebrating the holidays with family, friends, feasting, and fun...are you also battling stress? Medical professionals have noticed a sharp uptick in incidents of heart attack and stroke every November, December, and January. We asked Dr. Shannon Orsak of St. Michael’s Emergency Rooms for the best ways to protect yourself and your family from holiday stress. He says, “In addition to eating and drinking in moderation (not to excess), maintaining your exercise routine, and getting enough sleep, the most important thing you can do is to know the symptoms for heart attack and stroke. We have many effective treatments...but they all depend on seeking prompt medical attention.” When you feel shortness of breath, dizziness, or nausea, how do you know whether you are having a panic attack, feeling indigestion from too much feasting, or suffering from something more serious? Dr. Orsak says, “Heart attack may be signaled by minor chest discomfort that comes and goes with symptoms more like an upset stomach or anxiety...or with excruciating pain. If you even suspect you or a loved one is having a heart attack, come to St. Michael’s immediately. We have our own X-ray, Ultrasound and CT, and on-site diagnostic lab, and agreements with the best nearby hospitals and specialists to get you priority care...without a wait!” Let’s put our holiday schedules into perspective. Roasting the Thanksgiving turkey, hosting a Cookie Exchange, and finding the perfect item for everyone on your list are enjoyable...and optional. Getting medical help for yourself or a loved one suffering a stroke is a real emergency! Dr. Orsak says, “Be alert to common symptoms of stroke such as numbness or weakness in your face, arms, or legs, confusion and trouble speaking, vision problems, dizziness and loss of balance, and sudden severe headaches. Look for signs of stroke in someone else using the FAST test. Does the FACE droop when the person smiles? When

both ARMS are raised, does one arm drift downward? When the person repeats a sentence, does the SPEECH sound slurred or strange? If you notice these signs in the Face, Arms, or Speech, it’s TIME to seek emergency care...FAST!” You deserve to spend as much time in your home and with your family as possible….and no one gets better sitting in the waiting room of an ER. By law your insurance must pay in-network benefits at the ER of YOUR CHOICE whether the emergency room you choose is “in-network” or “out-of-network,” so when seconds count...the smart choice is St. Michael’s. Dr. Orsak says, “St. Michael’s is one of the only fully-accredited ER facilities with JCAHO, ACR, and CLIA certifications. We are innetwork with AETNA and also accept more than 200 insurance plans, including Cigna, Blue Cross, United, and Humana. St. Michael’s treats everything from allergic reactions and broken bones to high fevers and chest pain. Whenever you and your family need us this holiday season, we’ll be ready... twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week!”

At this time St Michael’s is currently not participating with Medicare, Medicaid, or Tricare.

ou’ve tried every diet out there--Atkin’s, Mediterranean, Eat For Your Blood Type, Low-Fat, No-Fat, Paleo. Did they work? Maybe for a while. But most people don’t realize that willpower is a finite resource. You only have so much before the carb-starved chocoholic in you goes berserk and starts pawing through your kids’ leftover Halloween candy. Study after study shows that we have a certain allotment of self-discipline, and once that’s gone, it’s gone. “If you’re having trouble losing weight,” says Dr. Jeffery Alford of Sugar Land Wellness and Weight Loss, “it’s not because of a lack of self-discipline. Mostly, we get sidetracked by having to think about, shop for, cook, and portion out food all day. But there isn’t just one single way to lose weight that works for everyone. That’s why I offer different types of support for patients with different concerns. If you’re too busy to think about meal-planning and calorie counting, consider Medi-Health...a full meal replacement program that actually tastes great! If you already have a plan, but you need help sticking to it, I offer a supplement, NeuroAssist, to control your appetite and boost your energy. You may use them separately...or together to create an unbeatable combination.” Developed by physicians at the University of Minnesota, NeuroAssist works with your brain chemistry to suppress appetite. It significantly curtails how much you want to eat...without making you feel hungry, cranky, jittery or stressed out. Dr. Alford says, “NeuroAssist doesn’t make the decisions for you, but it makes it easier to overcome obstacles to weight loss. You’ll still have to portion your food and keep your food journal, but NeuroAssist makes it easier to stick to your weight loss plan without giving into hunger or irritability. Essentially, NeuroAssist gives you the edge you need to stick to your healthy goals and see success!” Retrain yourself to maintain healthy eating habits with Medi-Health. Dr. Alford says, “You’ll keep your metabolism burning all day long with three Medi-Health meals of your choosing and three Medi-Health snacks. Not only do my patients find them delicious and satisfying, they love not having to count calories, points, carbs, or protein. This is the easy, no-planning approach that fits a busy lifestyle. The meals are grab-and-go, so you’ll lose weight without disrupting your routine one bit!” “Don’t wait until after you’ve gained the ‘Holiday 10’ to be the best, healthiest version of you. ould you rent a beachfront condo in a tropical place and never go there? Would you rent a car and leave it in the driveway or garage to collect dust? Would you fill your fridge with food and let it all expire? Silly questions, right? So, why do so many people pay for dental care all year they never end up using? “Many insurance policies run on a calendar year instead of a fiscal one,” says Dr. Thomas Lomonte, D.D.S. of Stafford. “That means the slate gets wiped clean on January 1st. On that day, three very important things may happen: 1) Your “yearly maximum” benefits reset--the $200-$1000 or more to which you have access will probably NOT roll over. That is money you will never see again. 2) Your deductible will reset. If you

have paid this deductible this year, you’re in the clear until New Year’s day! 3) January 1st is a popular day for fee increases. Today’s $50 co-pay may be next year’s $60-75. The point is, you should be benefiting from the services for which you are already paying a monthly premium.” Even if you set aside the financial reasons for a moment, it’s just smart thinking to go to the dentist before the end of the year. A basic cleaning and checkup can alert your dentist to any problems before they get out of hand. Filling today’s minor cavity can avoid needing an expensive root canal six months or a year from now. Thank goodness your neighborhood dentist, Dr. Lomonte is ready to take your end-of-the-year appointment calls. A proud

native Texan, Dr. Lomonte grew up in Beaumont, TX; got his undergraduate degree from Lamar University and his D.D.S. from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. Generations of Fort Bend families have been trusting Dr.Lomonte with their smiles--from kids to moms and dads to grandparents--since 1982. Worried about finding the time to see him? “Ask yourself,” says Dr. Lomonte, “if you can really afford to throw that money away? Take advantage of your benefits and protect your smile!”

A Weight Loss Plan that Really Works “I’ve lost 95 lbs. thus far,” says high school chemistry teacher Rachel Sims. “People stop me all the time and ask me how I did it!”

by Amy Sharp

“I

’ve lost 95 lbs. thus far,” says high school chemistry teacher Rachel Sims. “People stop me all the time and ask me how I did it!” Last August, Rachel’s mother (a local business owner) heard about Dr. Chary Tamirisa M.D–aka “Dr. T” at Sugar Land Medical and Aesthetics--from one of her customers. Rachel says, “My mother said her customer highly recommended Dr. T because he really got to the bottom of why weight loss was difficult for some people. I had a lot of weight to lose and hadn’t had much success, so I gave it a shot and scheduled the appointment.” Through a series of tests, Dr. T. discovered that Rachel’s hormones were out of balance. “We started slow,” says Rachel. “We got the hormones in balance and a nutritional plan in place. I’ve found the plan very easy to follow. I purchase shakes from Dr. T’s office, and the rest of my food I get from my neighborhood grocery store. I’m always satisfied...actually, I’m usually filled up! Once the hormones and nutrition were in check, the weight started to come off. Dr. T. then added an exercise plan...which I also found very easy and reasonable. It’s a simple 30 minutes a day a few times a week.” Rachel is still working with Dr. T’s office to lose her last

few pounds. She says, “The office staff is wonderful and extremely helpful. At first I was in the office once every other week...now I’ve dropped to once every month or two. I’ve found the appointments very easy to fit in my schedule, as the office is always on time. Most of the time I’m there less than 30 minutes!” In addition to comprehensive weight loss at Sugar Land Medical & Aesthetics, you’ll also enjoy traditional medical services like treatment of disease and management of health issues from Dr. T, his wife board-certified Internist Dr. Tamirisa Renu, M.D., and their daughter Dr. Aparna Tamirisa, M.D. Dr. T. says, “For an improved sex life, we offer both the O-Shot for women and the P-Shot for men. Alan Burkhalter, his brother Chris Burkhalter, Alan’s sons Luke and Beau, and fellow-plumber Zach shared some tips on reducing holiday plumbing stress. There is a lot of food preparation going on this time of year, but your garbage disposal is not a magic hole where every scrap and peel will just disappear. You are better off tossing the waste and excess in the garbage or finally starting that compost pile...as disposals are just not designed to handle large volumes of food. And of course, grease, bones, potato peels, onion skins and eggshells are always a no, no...no matter the time of year! Extra friends and family in the house means extra traffic through your bathroom...and an extra burden for your toilet.

Be sure to have wastebaskets close to the toilet to remind guests that not all garbage should be flushed. No one wants a clogged toilet during the party! The hot water heater...extra people in the home means extra demand. You can turn your hot water heater up before guests arrive to increase its capacity (but not above 120 degrees!) And don’t forget to turn it back down after everyone leaves. If you’re lucky enough to be the guest instead of the host this holiday season, take a few steps to protect your plumbing while you’re out of town. Remember to set your water heater to “vacation mode” to conserve energy...but don’t turn off the water to your house. If you do that you could get junk in your pipes and have to call Alan’s team to unclog your ballcock and flapper. Remember to give your neighbor your spare key and the number for Alan’s Plumbing 281-261-1064...just in case a plumbing emergency arises. The family at Alan’s Plumbing wishes your family a very happy, relaxing Thanksgiving. Enjoy! Alan’s Plumbing

Tradition

Where

Meets

Transformation S ome traditions are worth passing down from generation to generation...Grandma’s recipe for Turkey and stuffing, Mom’s Pecan Pie, and Dad’s Pumpkin-Spiced Pancakes. But don’t confuse “old” with “traditional.” When your scuffed and dingy kitchen counters are sporting an outdated color-scheme...it’s time for a change. Jonee and Paul Barnett of Miracle Method Surface Refinishing say, “With our help, you can celebrate a traditional holiday with family and friends...in a kitchen that looks brand new!” Don’t you want your kitchen to make a good impression? After all, it’s the busiest part of the house. In addition to all the baking, roasting, and simmering, kids may be making turkey “hand art” or caramel apples, and friends and neighbors gather around the table for a cup of coffee and a chat. Scorch marks, nicks, and discolored rings on your counter aren’t charming mementos of holidays past. Miracle Method transforms tile, cultured marble, Corian®, Formica®, Wilsonart® and other laminate countertops.…without ripping them out! Jonee says, “Before we put on our miracle finish, we start with a professional cleaning and surface restoration. Then our Natural Accents™ finish offers a multi-color stone look that’s seamless, non-porous, heat resistant and scratch resistant and easily repaired.” If your family’s favorite competition is the big Thanksgiving football game or the Black Friday skirmish, you may think success means big stress and a race to the finish line. Jonee says, “We believe life should be stress-free, especially around the holidays. Even a big change can be easy! Most of our jobs take less than a week...and you won’t have the hassle, dust, or extreme expense of a major remodel.” The Macy’s Day Parade has been an American tradition since 1924… but would you want your countertops to look that old? Paul says, “At Miracle Method, we believe in changing your style to suit the times, while keeping traditional values like hard work, value, and honesty. We’re proud to be accredited members of the BBB, have an A rating on Angie’s List and have won the Angie’s List Super Service Award six year in a row. Call us today and we’ll get you a gorgeous home in time for the holidays.”

Classic Culture

n the spirit of “Cultural Pride’, the Fort Bend Hispanic Heritage Forum embraces all Hispanos by instilling pride and respect for the rights of people everywhere. President Joe Vera says, “We’re a Rosenbergbased, county wide, 501(c)(3), non-profit/non-partisan corporation founded in 2005. Everyone on our team--including our treasurer Lupe A. Uresti (a former mayor) and our secretary Janie G. Warstler (a former City Councilwoman)--works hard to help area students receive scholarships. Over the last seven years we’re proud to say we’ve raised $65,000 for over 60 college-bound recipients...and Classic Chevy Sugar Land has made a huge difference to our efforts!” “Ray Aguilar invited me to meet with the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce...and he raved about Classic Chevy Sugar Land and its owner, Don Kerstetter. When I met with Don to talk about the scholarships, he spoke very frankly about his own experience growing up and the passion and commitment it took for him to get an education. Then he looked me in the eye and asked, “How many scholarships did you award last year?” “We had 35 applicants,” I told him, “but we only had enough money for 20 scholarships.” What about the other 15?” he asked. “Well,” I said, “we weren’t able to give them anything.” Then Don leaned forward and said, “From now on, you go ahead and award scholarships to everyone who deserves one...and we’ll make sure you have enough money to fund them all.” “With the help of Classic Chevy Sugar Land, last year we awarded 30 scholarships to students from FBISD, Lamar Consolidated ISD, and part of Wharton.

Don and his team have been wonderful sponsors of our two major annual events: Cinco de Mayo and Fiesta Patrias, both held in Rosenberg with mariachi music, food, arts and crafts for sale, and family fun!” “Since we’re a non-profit staffed only by volunteers, we can always use more help from community sponsors like Classic Chevy Sugar Land. Visit us at www.hispanicheritageforum.org or on Facebook for information about sponsoring a scholarship or contributing to our established scholarship fund, attending or helping with our upcoming events, or applying for a scholarship (the deadline is the 2nd Saturday in May). “Around the beginning of October, Don offered me a position in the service department of Classic Chevy Sugar Land. He and David Alexander, the Service Director, wanted to have someone to welcome people, find out their needs, and escort them to an available service adviser. I’m always walking around with a smile and I love getting to know people...so this is the perfect job to get me out of retirement!” Don Kerstetter, owner of Classic Chevy Sugar Land says, “Whether Joe’s greeting you in our service department or encouraging young people to pursue their educational dreams... he exemplifies the friendly community spirit of Classic Chevy Sugar Land. Come to see us for sales or service...and enjoy the difference!”

ou know that terrible feeling when your foot “goes to sleep?” Now imagine having your entire leg go numb...for years. That’s what Tom Matthews, a local sales representative for Microsoft, experienced as a result of a herniated disk. He says, “A few years ago after I had finished a marathon, I started having persistent back problems and pain that resulted in complete numbness down my left leg. An MRI revealed that I had a herniated, bulging disk protruding from my spine...the kind of problem that usually requires surgery. I’m really uncomfortable with the idea of surgery, so I started doing my research...and I learned that decompression would probably be the most effective non-surgical option for me. I visited several chiropractors in the Sugar Land area, looking for the right one for me.” “When I realized that Dr. Steve Harris and I attend the same church, I called him for an appointment and showed him my MRI. Dr. Harris didn’t make any promises about how long the process would take or how effective it would be in my case. He offered me spinal disk decompression (at a price much lower than the other chiropractors I had considered), chiropractic adjustments, and laser treatment.” Dr. Harris may use Triton DTS decompression tables to relieve the pressure on your spine. In fact, he’s even taught courses to help other chiropractors use these tables in the best way to relieve a patient’s pain. Dr. Harris also practices soft tissue techniques (used by only 150 people anywhere in the world) and uses an oscillator and a laser to restore circulation, break down scar tissue, and improve range of movement. These varied, advanced techniques made a difference for Tom. He says, “Throughout my experience Dr. Harris was very honest and approachable. I highly recommend him! My response to treatment was slower and took longer and Dr. Harris considered stopping it, but I said, ‘Don’t give up on me. I don’t want spinal surgery.’ Dr. Harris listened and in just three more weeks, I turned the corner with rapid and full recovery. Three months later, I lost 25 pounds and discovered that I had adult onset dia-

hen Elaine Dennis found a picture of the “bathroom of her dreams,” the first thing she did was show it to her husband, Mark. Then she started looking for a local designer who could make her dream a reality. She says, “Grand Windows and Interiors was recommended to us by friends. You really want someone you trust to come into your home, and from the minute I stepped into the showroom, the designer Caron Lopez put me at ease.” “I showed her the inspirational photo of a designer bathroom that I liked (although it was bigger than mine) and right away she said, ‘No problem, we can make it happen!’ She worked very hard to get the job rolling. Caron worked with the photo to find the materials and figure out exactly what we needed...and by golly she gave me the bathroom of my dreams!”

“We had a very good working relationship and I loved my bathroom, so I asked her what she thought I could do with my master bedroom. Never at any point did she push me or try to persuade me of anything. She’s an amazing listener, so when she did make a suggestion, it was usually spot on! I had seen tile that looked like distressed wood and she found it for my bedroom. I’ve had so many compliments on it! She selected the right automatic shades for the bedroom and found the perfect creamy color for the walls, so the bathroom and bedroom really flow together. I’m enjoying them so much!” “The person who referred Grand Windows and Interiors to me told me she’d absolutely be using them again... and I know I’ll do the same!”

ce Mary Joy ’s Cranford story

Only the Best Could Help Her

O

ver the course of three years Mary Joyce Cranford had been to three different dentists in North Carolina and Georgia. After she and her husband moved out here to the Houston Area, she had some work done by another dentist in Houston. Joyce says, “When that dental work failed, I didn’t know where to turn. I actually found Dr. Cook in the phone book, but I was skeptical when she told me before she could fix my smile. After $75,000, bone grafts, failed implants, a life-threatening infection, and repeated failures by dentist after dentist… I didn’t know how to trust her. Dr Cook was very gentle and understanding. Dr. Cook reassured me that we didn’t have to take any drastic measures and that we would always work within my comfort level. She was honest about the difficulties… and that convinced me she was a dentist I could trust!” The challenges Dr. Cook faced weren’t as simple as taking out Joyce’s old work and replacing it with new. Joyce had one bridge on top to replace her upper arch, anchored to implants that were failing on one side. Unfortunately, her previous dentist provided the wrong information about what kind of implants had been used. Dr. Cook says, “We started by removing the failed implants. Then we decided to use as much of her existing work as possible. I knew that emotionally and physically, Joyce needed the least invasive solution possible. After grafting the sites of the failed implants, I fabricated a special denture that attaches to Joyce’s existing implants. After her procedure I gave her a mirror to see the final results, but she was still groggy from the sedation. She said, “I’m soo preetttty!” and I knew that was a good first impression!” Joyce says, “I love that my new teeth are light, strong, and easy to clean. My favorite part was getting the exact shade I wanted...a “Chicklet White” One of my previous dentists wouldn’t let me pick my own shade and insisted on a dingy yellowed color for a permanent partial. When I told him I didn’t like it, he said, “Well, you’re stuck with it.” Dr. Cook respected my opinion. In fact, she agreed that with my fair coloring a white smile looks natural and beautiful!” “Not only that, but when Dr Cook was building up my lower teeth, she gave me my “perfect bite.” Now I don’t have neck pain...and the shape of my face has filled out so that I even look younger!” Dr. Cook explains, “During the years of her pre-

after

vious dental treatment, Joyce had “lost” her ideal bite. I determined her ideal neuromuscular bite, and restored Joyce’s bite with new crowns.” When you find the right dentist, you want the world to know! Joyce says, “Dr. Cook has so many awards, certifications, and specialized memberships and she does every kind of dentistry from TMD, to implants, to braces, to total mouth reconstructions. If you could have the best like Dr. Cook, why would you go anywhere else? My husband has great teeth, but I’ve brought him to her for a checkup. Finding Dr. Cook was truly divine intervention. She helped me when no one else could!” Zahra Cook, DMD Advanced Cosmetic Dentist 281-342-8481 1536 FM 359 Rd Richmond, TX 77406 www.cookdental.com

COUTURE for the CAUSE a night in VERSAILLE A Magical Night that Made a Difference! fashion show photography by UpClose Photos - J. Thomas “Jay” Ford Please join us in thanking all who supported the 2014 American Cancer Society Couture for the Cause. $255,000 was raised to help in the fight against cancer. The money raised will make a real difference to thousands of people in our community, and even more in the greater Houston area and the nation. The money raised over the past five years helps the American Cancer Society fund programs and services for cancer patients and their families, as well as cancer research. Our fervent hope is that research will ultimately help scientists understand and eliminate this terrible disease that is taking so much from so many people we love. The American Cancer Society Couture for the Cause, A Night in Versailles, Masquerade, was held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the home of KK and S. Scott West. Planned events included a poolside fashion show produced by Lenny Matuszewski that featured couture models, many of whom are cancer patients or survivors, seizing their own opportunity to give back. ise Letendre says, “We had a really dated master bathroom, mismatched tiles, and an old sink...but we weren’t going to start on a huge project without someone we trusted to do the work. I had asked a few different companies to submit bids, but I wasn’t happy. Then I saw an ad–probably in UpClose–for Teri Gilberg, the Re-modelista. When I met with her I was immediately impressed with her quick response and excellent communication. We decided to use Teri as a project manager, and Mark from the Kitchen and Bath Showroom as our designer.” “Having a project manager to coordinate the renovation made everything so much easier! We decided to change the flooring and put new, wide beam wooden flooring through the master bath, the closet, and the master bedroom. Teri was spot-on through every step of the project, always ahead of the planning. She was the driving force to make sure everything happened on schedule. Even when I knew she must be going in fifteen different directions at once, she always texted me right back, even in the evenings.” “We absolutely gutted the bathroom, tore out the tub and replaced it with a dual, walk-in shower for my husband and me. Then we made the old shower into a closet with a mirrored door for additional storage. The whole look is so serene...I love it! Throughout the process, Teri was timely and when there was an unexpected issue like a product on backorder that caused a delay, she handled our frustrations and the frustration of the designer. She was as thrilled as we were when things went well...like the moment our gorgeous new wallpaper was hung in the bathroom.” “People think the most frustrating part of a renovation is the mess and dust, but it’s really when you can’t reach the people in charge of the work 30 ~ UPCLOSE ~ November 2014

Project! and you don’t know where to go for answers. Thanks to Teri, we never had that experience. She always responded to me and told me the truth. She’d say, “I don’t know that answer, but I will find out”...and she did! “Now we’re down to the last few details in the guest bathroom. I am completely confident that Teri will stay with us to the end...until every “i” is dotted and every “t” is crossed. Every renovation comes with labor pains, but Teri brought the project to completion!”

ne local Mom told us, “We’d just bought our home, so when UpClose magazine came each month, I kept an eye out for different contractors like All Out A/C for future reference. Well, my husband was out of town when the air conditioner went out. We have three units, but when that one died, my kids were saying, “Mom, it’s hot up here!” and I didn’t want to wait. I remembered the UpClose article last month about the way All Out A/C helped an Event Manager and got her A/C replaced in less than 24 hours on a weekend...so I called All Out A/C, too!” “Bryan returned my call within fifteen minutes. I knew one unit had to be replaced, and he was very willing to work with me on the price. There was absolutely no pressure. He told me to think it over and call him when I was ready. I called him the next day!” “Right away I liked the way the team from All Out A/C carefully spread out a drop cloth over my new carpet, took off their shoes, and were respectful of my home. The four guys did excellent work and the service manager, John, gave me updates so I always knew how things were going.” “When they were replacing the unit, they noticed the one next to it was leaking. John said, “I’m sorry to say it, but it’s probably the condenser coil. Judging by the age of the unit, it’s probably still under warranty. Do you want us to take care of it?” I wasn’t thrilled to have another expense (the labor), but I was glad that All Out noticed the problem...and then handled all the work of calling the manufacturer to confirm the war-

ranty and registration, exchanging the part, and all the other hassle.” “Bryan let me know someone from the city would make sure everything was up to code. I’m glad they told me that was necessary and I felt confident knowing they welcomed an inspection...because they do their work correctly.” “I had a very good experience. I knew I could call Bryan anytime and get a quick response. All Out A/C is the company we chose and the only one we’d call in the future!” Bryan Bellamy aka “Mr. A/C” and Chance Kamp say, “Through seasonal maintenance, repairs, and our speciality-full system replacement–we always aim to exceed your expectations. If you know your air conditioner will need replacing, call us today for end-of-the-year rebates and offseason discounts. We offer 100% financing with approved credit...so you won’t have to wait until the temperature (and the prices) start to go up again!”
