In 1982 a military coup took the president out of power and construction in Guatemala came to a stop. Instead of a car for graduation, I asked my dad to find me a place to stay in the United States. They found me a sponsor through a church in San Antonio. I was only seventeen, but I was determined to enter America the right way, work hard, and succeed. Once I got my residence papers, I went back to construction, landscaping, and plumbing. With every choice I made, I considered whether or not it would make my parents proud. I was fortunate to have so many opportunities, and I always wanted to open my
