Urban Planning and Landscape Selected works

ExValtrasismeno The purpose of the project for the former Valtrasimeno factory originates from the idea to give to the community of Castiglione del Lago a new place, a new landmark, that would re-establish the spirit and cultural core of the whole Trasimeno Lake area. The concept of Permaculture, as defined in the competition guidelines, becomes the main generating principle of the entire project. Different places are therefore re-developed and reelaborated based on the Permaculture criteria. The centre of activities will become the gate to the city, starting from the renovation of the former factory. Urban gardens are turned into areas dedicated to farming serving the entire community; a more external cultivated area will be destined to an extensive production; and further, the natural area, is to preserve biodiversity. The architectural design follows a step-by-step process, starting from

operations of demolition, recovering and increasing the existing, to working with the soil and generating new visuals. The project aims to create a new urban landscape, playing on different layers of land and has the final intention of guiding to a single focal point: the former factory. It will become a new reference location, a city gate, that gives users the advantage of freely moving and benefit from the entire area. The reconversion of the four blocks of the factory will provide the inside with large areas dedicated to culture by creating spaces for a library, study areas, a tourist info point and a conference room. A restaurant with a panoramic view over the lake and the city is also provided by adding a new volume on the top roof. In addition to the restoration of the existing buildings, there will be a guest house destined to accommodation

functions for visitors. The new intervention will take place behind the factory. The new buildings are generated as raising from the ground and point out to the former Valtrasimeno factory. They will present a walkable green roof, with a shape opposite to the vault of the existing factory. Greenhouses and glass platform roofs are designed to increase the function on the area. The complete accomplishment of the entire project has been imagined to be carried out in following stages over the years. The goal is to have a type of model that can be implemented gradually, starting from the former redevelopment of the factory following with the addition of the new buildings.

Sewing The City, Schiedam In Sewing the City a network of future pedestrian routes form the basis for the site infill. Koemarkt, the VROM site and the river Schie are interconnected by means of new passageways in the existing Rotterdamsedijk. These lead to two striking public buildings above an underground car park that can accommodate a range of public functions such as a jenever museum, conference facilities and a ‘food corner’. Co-protagonists will be two polarities of the area, the V-ROM site, where will born our new buildings just from the line of the context, and Koemarkt that from place of result dominates by infrastructure, will become the start point of the new configuration. We trust in the interactive participation of citizens in the urban transformations so we invite them to play with the context and enjoy it. The program require to build an area equivalent to half of the area on the

V-ROM site plus parking area with a rate of 1 to 100m of building built. Rather than doing a building with parking next to it or in it, we decided to merge the two functions in to a symbiotic relationship. The parking area wants to connect the streets for cars. The building wants to connect pedestrian to the riverside without car. The V-ROM site became an extension of the square in Koemarkt generating new spaces, flexible spaces. The market will become the core of the connection and the link to other function as shops (mainly with local products), restaurants and bar. In the bigger mass will be located also the “Distillery Gin Museum” an interactive place to learn this heritage of the city. The street on Koemarkt will be reduced in size according to the city programs for the future with and implement of the public mobility in order to reduce pollution and the environmental impact generated by the traffic. That will give

the occasion to generate a “30 zone” in the whole Koemarkt area with permeable passages for pedestrian and bike that will have a vital role in the future. The proximity to the underground and railway stations, the presence of a trams and bus routes with frequent stops ensure the full and effective coverage of the area by public transport, also in a supralocal scale.

We, Bergen The 13th Europan site has a unique location on the south side of Lungegårdsvannet by the Møllendal River outlet. Located just outside the old town center, the Europan site has a long history as an industrial area, including milling back to the Middle Ages, and storage for the city’s technical department in recent times. Much of the Møllendal area has for decades been inaccessible and unsuited for public use. Now, however, a transformation is on its way. The site represents an important part of the potential for residential infill and new urban development in the immediate surroundings of the city center. Through a radical transformation the area will be developed as a high quality urban area both for visitors and new residents. Transformative projects in the neighborhood are completed or under development, including the new Art Academy of Bergen, 720 student flats on the neighboring site and

residential buildings east of the river. We is a community project, when we first started looking at the program we had this image. The image of a social project that maximize the interaction and sharing principles at various living and activities levels where each space can be shared and has a higher sense of belonging from the inhabitants, users and citizens. From the ground which is the first common platform for all possible outdoor activities and interaction to the urban structure where the green infrastructure over taking the place and arrives to the lake. The new dialogue is the dynamic feature of water when it rises and enters the landscape filling up pools day and night, summer and winter within a leisure featured by outdoor activating elements that brings different interests on the same ground while all the indoor public facilities shares the same ground with located in protected pools. The form followed the feeling and

been adjusted by the context. In, out and with where the most used while discussing how can we develop the idea - one community, one unique form, one courtyard on one common ground - a defined form with maximum possibilities of adjustments where each space inside can start from being shared by everyone to a private space. we proposed the possibility of densification and grows within a defined limits. We is a shared time and place. That’s way we call we .

Residential Park Sofia The Developer owns a Land Property in Sofia, of 164,179 square meters, zoned for multi-purpose (commercial and residential) development. The project stems from a careful reading of the urban context and the territory in which the development’s area is lo- cated. The existing infrastructure and in particular the “Ring Road”, along which several important “events” are located, allow easy access to the site from the city center and the airport. The nearby metro stations, in part still under construction, the proximity of two of the most renowned developments in Sofia, the Business Park Sofia and a residential neighborhood. The approach for the design of this important site was characterised by carefully analysing the urban context and the existing traffic flows, highlighting the need to provide two main entrances to the project area. The two important traffic cornerstones,

equally balanced and complementary to each other, will be organised by two roundabouts. We therefore propose the construction of these roundabouts at the North-East and North-West end of the site. A secondary road will be located along the entire perimeter of the site. The masterplan and the whole project has been generated by two fundamental elements; on one hand the advantage of the natural slope of the land which gradually sloping from South-West to North-East, creating a drop of about 21 m diagonally to the plot and on other hand the definition and the positioning of the urban space as a reference (phase 0), generating so all the subsequent stages of the development. The land’s natural slope is used to create artificial terraces, becoming important elements of the landscape, on which all the designed buildings and public spaces will be located.

The “Piazza” of phase 0 becomes an important key element. The architecture is built around this big void, like if the project idea originates from a single solid block from which pieces have been removed. The buildings will be clustered around this public urban space, which will relate to others successive urbanisations within the site. The development phases of the whole project have been studied in such manner to balance the ratio between the local retail, residential and office activities. The phasing could be carried out independently and unrelated to future phasing of other parts of the project, due to this particular urban approach.

Olympic Cities. Netherlands The study established that existing bids, including the current Dutch proposals, are based on the paradigm of the Olympic Games as a megaevent. As XML shows, however, the Olympics are not a neutral autonomous, immutable event. Olympic history points to cycles of twenty years, in which the Games are closely linked to political, economic and social developments. Each period has a specific paradigm that defines the meaning of the Games and their significance for the times. The study also shows that it is highly probable that the 2028 Games will coincide with the start of a new cycle. Under the heading ‘The Netherlands as Game Changer,’ XML proposes, therefore, that a Dutch bid should not focus on what the Games mean today, but should incorporate long-term global developments and their future ramifications for the Netherlands. In line with these conclusions, XML

has developed three spatial models that show how the Netherlands can host the 2028 Games by effectively responding to these long-term global developments. In the ‘Deltapolis’ model, the two Randstad areas, North Wing and South Wing, are integrated into a single, internationally competitive urban region: the Deltapolis. The ‘Virtual Games’ model is a response to technological developments and the rapid digitalization of society. In ‘Global Games,’ finally, XML proposes a new organizational model for the Games that reinforces international networks and exchange between cities. These visions for the Games, each with a specific narrative, are atuned to long-term global trends (instead of the limitations of current IOC requisites) and show how the Dutch bid can become an effective response to these trends. The visions may be viewed as a design postscript to the comparative study of Olympic candidatures.

Beirut Waterfront Park The new water park in front of Beirut wants to be a park in the truest sense of the word, a park that knows how to moderate between the interior and exterior, between the built and the unbuilt, between the noise and silence, between earth and sky, between nature and culture. This was the starting point that led the whole creative process up to the Final drawing. Wanting to meet the challenge of rehabilitation and re-conquering the land from the sea, the park plan cannot fail to consider two issues: the third dimension, namely the vertical, the emergence of horizontal soil from the sea; the beautiful Lebanese landscape that provides inspiration for the park which is consciously moving away from purely ornamental velleity. First the rock that forms a Mount Lebanon but also its coast without equal, then, the look expands out to the water which belongs to the city and

the roughness of the soil covered in varied vegetation types. All this wrapped in a frame articulated at three levels: – a promenade capable of capturing the needs of the built sorroundings – pools of water-like shards of a diamond to remind us , albeit symbolically, the coolness of the sea – a Rocaille inspired by the shoreline erosion and full of suggestions The heart of the park consists of a series of themed gardens, which in turn differ in height, function and morphology. We intend to propose a park as far away as possible from the stereotypes of the over-constructed parks . We think that Beirut needs a park that knows how to grow with the city itself, with its traditions, rhythm, time and its people. In this regard it is strongly anchored in the tradition of those who can cultivate the land with wisdom and patience. On the other hand a park a child of

his times obliged to sustainability, fully functioning day and night throughout the year. The energy tower on the main axis of the site and in the open sea becomes a symbol of this zero energy park that takes all its energy from the nature of which it is pure expression.

The Put Valley Park, Lumezzate The Put valley is like a rock sculpture with land and vegetation. A space with a strong vertical component, where the slopes that connect the sub-lying areas became a vertical green canvas, the lush walls, covered with natural vegetation, characterizing the site, they mark their identity, incorporate and lull him. - PARK VERTICAL The project starts from the desire to put in value the special topography of the site: its strong verticality, becomes founding factor of the park. The project wants to work with the vertical in its different facets in order to create an urban park open to the public, welcoming and dynamic. - PARK OPEN TO THE CITY ‘ The site it is a real green oasis, a place of peace and nature. Despite the proximity of the Put valley to the urban center, it remains highly uneven and

unknown to the city and its people. The project emphasizes the need to reconnect the site to the city and to open it to its inhabitants as an indispensable condition for the long-term survival of the park and for the success of the process of appropriation by the population. The project work with the routes: these are not imagined simply as the connecting lines between two points, but rather as the genuine own prom, that accompany the visitor to the discovery of the park, its spaces and magnificent scenery Alpine foothills around them.
