If you are in the middle of preparation for taking the First Certificate in English exam, you ought to know that these words are your personal Bruce Willis from “Armageddon” – they are destined to save you, when the Speaking part comes! If you are only planning to start the course, you’ll have a great 8 months ahead of you to fall in love with this line . Having learnt all the ins and outs of getting ready to pass FCE myself, I would like to point out some factors, which, I think, were significant in achieving my goal and might be useful to you as well. 1) First of all, knowing that I would be struggling with writing, I bought the Longman Exams Dictionary, which was certainly a good investment, as it has a Writing Handbook, a Topic and an Essay Activators inside that were extremely helpful in my FCE preparation. Plus I can use the dictionary in my further studies. 2) I did my homework, and despite the fact that my friends jokingly called me a nerd sometimes, I

knew that I was increasing and improving my vocabulary, filling the grammar gaps and getting better with my exam skills.

ing on my wall, and the precious memories warm my heart, I know that I’ve got much more ‘A’s than I should have ended up with even before the exam.

3) I did my best to overcome the stage fright and used every opportunity to speak even when I wasn’t asked to . Believe me, “one way or another”*, the speaking test “is gonna get ya”* and you’ll have to become tough just like Bruce Willis to accomplish the mission. So don’t skip it – practice!

I’m sure you’ll create your own recipe of what’s good for you, but I sincerely hope that you will have a really great and memorable time during preparation.

4) I enjoyed reading books from the LSE library. Here I have to confess that I avoided those thick scary ones with small letters and chose thinner brighter ones, most of which turned out to be page-turners. 5) I had fun! And this is my favorite part. I was very lucky to get a great teacher and to meet wonderful people, who turned those 8 months of exam preparation into a truly amazing and enjoyable time. And now, when I look at that shiny Cambridge certificate hang-

Sometimes the journey is better than the destination! *“One Way or Another” (1978) is a song by American New Wave band Blondie. You might have heard different cover versions of it. If you haven’t, now’s the time to fill the gap. Contributed by Toma Panchenko

Meet our great Montessori Staff…. Lilia Lillia, who has worked at LSE for about a year says ‘Working with little ones is successful and pleasant if you can see an independent Universe in every child, an Individual who has never been before and who will never again exist. And that’s not difficult to do – it’s difficult not to like kids! ‘

Oksana Oksana, who has been working at LSE for several months now says ‘I like working in the Montessori system so much, because I share many opinions and principles of Maria Montessori – incredible Italian teacher and creator of this approach. Every person is unique and everyone has his or her own life. I’m sure that you should remember that every day working with kids, teaching them, bringing up your own kids. Maria Montessori found the way to do it more than a century ago. And I’m very happy to realize it with our kids!’

The Montessori philosophy of teaching was created by Maria Montessori (1870-1952), an Italian physician whose inquiries extended into philosophy, psychology, and anthropology. Montessori developed a radical new approach to educating children, inventing teaching materials tuned precisely to the key stages of child development. Those children who have experienced the Montessori education system become life-long learners with a strong sense of integrity, who demonstrate a concern for others and leadership skills. They are creative in problem solving, honest and authentic, careful with their social and ecological environment and are behavioral models for others.

Meet our Administration Staff Anya K

My name’s Anna and I’m the person who’s always ready to help our students with all their problems and questions about the school. This is my 5th winter at LSE. I started to work here as a part-time Admin Assistant in Autumn 2007. The funny thing about it is that being a student I had decided to start improving my English and had already chosen LSE to study at when I saw the job advertisement in my institute. So, I assumed it was destiny for me to be here. Now, my job combines two things I adore: English and communication. So, I guess, I’m the lucky one. Also, one of the things I like about my job is our lovely director Paul Moyes. I’m sure, many of you know him quite well and are familiar with his sense of humor and professionalism. Even though, he can be strict sometimes, to work with him is a real pleasure.

I wish everyone had such a friendly environment in their offices, because my colleagues are just stars .

I’ve been working here for almost 2 years. My job’s very demanding, but it’s interesting, creative and it is never boring. The first thing I like about my job is communicating with people. I’m always glad to help our students with questions. I really like my colleagues and my boss Paul. They are the best of the best— friendly and helpful. I’m very glad that I work here with them. Also, I want to add that our social events for students and staff are lots of fun. Most of all I like our annual Pub Quiz, where students can learn a lot of new things, communicate with teachers in an informal setting and get to know each other better.

Vika

I’ve been working at LSE for just over a year. I remember it was a lovely sunny day when I started. It was August, 2010. I work with all the books you can see at our school and what's interesting is that I’ve been a bookworm since early childhood. My job makes me really happy. I'm responsible for the library and selling books. Additionally, I prepare some ads for our beloved LSE, e.g. different posters and leaflets. My working days is always packed with lots of interesting tasks. I DO like working here and the thing that I like most about LSE is the people. All of them are so nice! Believe me, seeing their warm smiles is such a big pleasure for me every day :) My favourite teacher? Hm... I like all of them. Sincerely :) What I like about Paul is that he is SO English, even living here, in Ukraine. He is a real gentleman.

Celebrating St. Valentine’s Day in Ukraine 14 of February in Ukraine as in many other countries is St. Valentine’s day and all beloved on this day are supposed to present gifts and cards in the shape of hearts to the people you love. This holiday came to Ukraine recently, and became very popular among young people. According to the latest public polls, about 63% of the population of Ukraine celebrate this holiday. The legend of celebrating of the St. Valentine’s Day has its roots deep in the Middle Ages. There is almost nothing known about the life of the real Christian Valentine

(born in 3 century A.D. in the in Roman Empire). They say that he was a bishop, who helped young lovers to write love letters, made peace for those who quarrelled etc. Then he was arrested on the order of Emperor Julius Claudius II, who did not allow his soldiers to get married, however, Valentine married the legionaries secretly.

He was sent to prison. There it is said he fell in love with the blind daughter of his executioner. The other version says, the prison guard asked Valentine to cure his daughter and she fell in love with him. Before being led to his end, Valentine left a love letter for her and signed it: “Yours Valentine!” That’s why letters on this day are called Valentinki (in Russian) and the very holiday is St. Valentine’s Day. How did you celebrate it this year?
