Week seven of last year’s X Factor featured contestants paying tribute to the brilliant Whitney Houston. Controversial head judge, Simon Cowell, must be delighted that his 2008 winning contestant Alexandra Burke will be belting out Whitney’s hits throughout her yearlong tour of The Bodyguard; the musical. Last summer saw Burke replace Beverley Knight in the lead role of Rachel Marron in the West End musical The Bodyguard, which made its debut opening at Southampton’s Mayflower in February where it commenced its nationwide UK tour. UK Women caught up with Alexandra whilst she was packing up her seven suitcases in readiness to board a flight from her home in New York back to the UK to prepare for the tour. “Being in the West End made me the happiest girl alive” enthuses Burke “I thought I was happy before but soon realised that this was a whole new happy; I was just so humbled and grateful when I first got the role but I insisted that they audition me first”. Following in the footsteps of one of the world’s best-selling music artists was quite a daunting prospect and Alexandra initially turned the role down, as she explains: “I had no confidence to perform the role when I was first offered it a couple of years ago, but it was only when I sat in the audience and watched Heather Headley that I came to the realisation that yes I can do this.” The role requires Alexandra to remain on stage constantly, so she had to quickly perfect the art of extremely swift costume changes. “There are around 24 costume changes throughout the musical” says Alexandra “which requires me to wear layer upon layer of clothes. I get so hot wearing leggings under jeans, plus a dress over the jeans but I can now get changed in nine seconds flat”. During the 15 date tour, Ms Burke will also be releasing and touring her third studio album. “There’s no formal release date yet but I will be performing at smaller and more intimate venues across the UK. It will be along the lines of ‘an evening with’ and I’ll be accompanied by a three-piece band and talking about my songs; old and new” adds Alexandra. Of course, Alexandra Burke rose to fame after winning the fifth series of The X Factor, whereby her debut number one single ‘Hallelujah’ sold over one million copies in the UK, a first for a British female soloist. She went on to support Beyoncé in her ‘I Am’ tour. The Bodyguard features a whole host of classics including Queen of the Night, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, I’m Your Baby Tonight, Run to You, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and one of the biggest selling songs of all time – I Will Always Love You. “I never assume that I’ve got these songs covered” explains Ms Burke “in particular ‘I Will Always Love You’ is a constant challenge. I draw on my own emotions when I sing it, but

connect with it on every level as Whitney was taken too soon and I think of her when I’m performing it and just feel so honoured.” Alexandra ensures her throat is kept in tip top condition when preparing for a major role like this and she abstains from eating dairy and drinking alcohol and she steams several times a day. “I also find that minimal talking and lots of vitamin C works wonders” adds Alexandra. Ms Burke has been receiving standing ovations for her performance as Whitney and, after watching her perform in The Bodyguard recently, we can truly say that she was born for this role. 50 SHADES OF‌

Grey is tricky: Wear it well, and you could be stunningly unforgettable. But play it wrong, and you risk looking like your (great-) grandma

11

Your hair is very frizzy. Fly aways are more noticeable with grey (or blond) hair. So if you have trouble with frizz control, consider colouring to get a sleeker look. Many women look incredible with a sprinkling of silver. The key is to even out your colour and make your grey appear well blended, which can be difficult since it tends to grow in random clusters. Your goal: to turn these patches into chic streaks. The secret: strategic highlights. When you lighten the right strands, you end up with ribbons of gorgeous highlights instead of a patchy mess. So how do we handle this going grey decision if we have been dyeing our hair for years? If you've been colouring for as long as you can remember, one of the major benefits of stopping is that there'll be no more wrestling with roots. Make a gradual change. If you've been using permanent colour, switch to semi -permanent, which is more translucent. Use a lighter shade with each touch-up. If you're mostly grey, consider blond highlights. Always keep your grey locks looking healthy so invest in a great spray or serum to restore lustre. Counteract yellowing, if any, with a purple shampoo or conditioner (try L'Oréal Nature's Therapy Color Confidence Blonde Brightening Shampoo) and a monthly rinse with lemon water (the juice of one lemon for every two cups water) to help eliminate smoke- and pollution-induced discoloration.

UK Women looks at this now increasingly popular trend of ditching the hair dye and going grey while adopting a stunning and beautiful look. If it is good enough for celebrities... As we all already know, the wrong haircut or the wrong colour can add years to you whatever the colour or cut. There are two huge hurdles to overcome with the going grey process.

And finally if you are just starting to notice those grey hairs, don't pluck! While there's no truth to the old wives' tale (that pulling one hair will cause three to sprout), removing those bad boys will not help in the end. The follicle doesn't die when you pluck, so that hair will start growing again, and it will still be grey. But until it's long enough to blend with the rest of your hair, it will just stick out. So ladies, going grey can make you stand out from the crowd and you can leave the Grandma look behind. It takes courage but if you decide to take the plunge, it is nothing that can't be reversed with a bottle of hair dye.

The first is emotional - a coming-to-terms with the ageing process and how it makes you feel about yourself as a woman, as well as in relation to how others perceive you. Does grey equal old? The second is the practical hurdle of how to grow out your roots without looking like a bag lady, a scarecrow or worse again a grey badge stripe! Let’s first look at what causes colour loss in our hair. As you age, your hair's melanocytes — cells that produce pigment — lose steam and make less melanin. That's when your hair seems to 'turn grey,' but it's actually just losing its original colour, not acquiring a new one. Women end up with a head of grey, silver, or white just like you may have had chestnut, light brown, or dark brown hair it's just a shade variation. You may be alarmed because your first white strands have started to multiply or maybe you've covered up for so many years that you no longer know just how much white you've got. Wherever you are on the spectrum, you have a choice: Conceal with colour or let it go grey. If you decide on the chemical route, the plus side is obvious; the downside is the cost, in time and money. So maybe grey is your answer — unless you fall into one of these categories. Your skin is yellow- or olive-toned. Grey is a cool shade, so it doesn't always complement warm skin tones. Your locks are thinning or superfine. Unless you cut your hair very short, a light colour (whether blond or grey) can make it look even sparser than it is.

We would love to have your photos of fabulous grey. Send to enquiries@ukwomenmagazine.co.uk

THE BOTTOM LINE Inspired by the latest catwalk creatives, it’s time to discover alluring trends that flaunt, flatter and fabulously fulfil our soaring summer styles. SHORTS Exuding modernity, variation and forever fashion-forward, shorts are an easy and stylish staple that evoke many qualities; laidback luxe, stylishly sexy, effortlessly elegant, sophisticatedly smart and ravishingly retro - designs that are all prevailing now. Culottes are the most fashionable and flattering longer length short, offering the perfect balance with the practicality of a trouser yet the elegance of a skirt. Céline and Stella McCartney showcased voluminous, wearable culottes whilst Topshop and Zara have amazing alternatives. The laidback luxe of the Bermuda short is a great option when seeking a relaxed, longer length that all women, regardless of height and body type, can wear. Christian Dior, Emporio Armani and House of Fraser are all showcasing fabulous arrays. A host of provocative, thigh-rising shorts are on the style radar too, with Jean Paul Gaultier and Dolce and Gabbana supporting mini shorts; No.21 highlighting the high-waist; smart suits with shorts arrived via Emilio Pucci, and cuffed shorts with turn-ups were seen at Iceberg, French Connection, Ted Baker and many other high street stores love this classically sexy summer style.

The summer months are upon us, and what better way to parade our perfectly sun kissed pins then to dress them in this season’s most covetable collection of shorts and skirts? Says Katie Farley

The epitome of feminine elegance; skirts offer a deliciously demure aura. This season sees the midi rock the runways along with other options, perfect for evening occasions that require a sprinkling of serious modern flair. The midi, a reincarnated classic, is on trend this summer, delivering a timeless feel with stylish updates via suede’s and silks at Jill Stuart and Monique Lhuillier. Michael Kors’ creativity conceptualized the midi with his Fifties fantasy array of beautifully wearable numbers, splashed with florals, oversized gingham and pretty embellishments. Jigsaw’s silk, pleated printed midi is divine! Evening styles favoured a festoon of feathering at Erdem; tassels tantalized at Whistles; transparent styles were delivered at Toga, and fringe-tastic skirts sashayed at Alberta Ferretti.

It’s very easy to get ‘carried away’ this season with the exciting assortment of handbags that have been whittled down from the catwalks and are now landing on the high street: an amalgamation of styles bursting with an innovative approach to redesign and creativity. BUCKET BAGS Following on from last season, the trendy bucket bag returns for spring/summer ‘15, and this time with an injection of redesign via a creative collision of refreshed textures, materials, silhouettes and small details. The trend was witnessed with a holey pattern throughout at 3.1 Philip Lim; extraordinary colourful rubbers re-awakened the design at Kenzo; Victoria Beckham charmed with reptile accents on classic forms, whilst Marni and Moschino injected vibrant prints onto their buckets. Biba are on the case, whilst Zara are offering the bucket in alluring variations of fabrics, colours and textures. FRINGED FAVOURITES These fringed handbags are a match made in fashion heaven with the boho-chic trend, reflecting a tantalizing textured array of lavishly applied tassels and fringing. Designers from Emilio Pucci, Etro, Rebecca Minfoff and Salvatore Ferragamo showcased more than a fragment of frivolous fringe work in an army of sizes and colours that echoed an ethnic, hippie vibe. These bags were seen decorated in a ‘70s style scene, with motifs and studwork in an array of different silhouettes to opt for. Emulating the trend’s popularity, almost every high street chain has jumped on board this fringed trend frenzy, from Topshop and Mint Velvet, to Karen Millen and Phase Eight. GEOMETRIC BOX DESIGNS Seen more as an object of desire rather than a functional purpose to curry your whole world in, the geometric box bags are so chic and desirably demure that you won’t want to let them out of your stylish sights. Oozing with elegance and allure, they arrive in rectangular and square shapes, embezzled in embellishments and adorned in picturesque imagery. Dolce & Gabbana, Lanvin, Victoria Beckham and Chanel all carried these in the chicest forms, while River Island have a fabulous collection to choose from.

Every woman’s most beloved and loyal accessory is definitely having a fashion moment. Katy Farley takes a peep

HEALTH

Mr Michael Savvas, Consultant Gynaecologist, leads the menopause service at the Poundbury Clinic at King Edward VII’s Hospital in London. Mr Savvas has a special interest in early menopause and in the safe prescription of HRT. Mr Savvas also works at King’s College, London.

He talks to UK Women about the prevalence and treatment of premature menopause – something that can play havoc with a woman’s life, health and emotions WHAT IS THE PERCENTAGE OF WOMEN LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE A PREMATURE OR EARLY MENOPAUSE? Menopause occurring before the age of 45 is termed ‘early,’ occurring for one in 20 women in the UK. Reaching menopause before the age of 40 is termed ‘premature,’ which occurs for one in 100 women in the UK. ARE THERE ARE KNOWN CAUSES/TRIGGERS/RISK FACTORS FOR PREMATURE MENOPAUSE? Although in most cases there is no identifiable cause, there are several factors associated with premature menopause. Premature menopause can sometimes be linked to your family history. Research has shown that the age at which a woman reaches menopause is likely to be inherited from her mother, so finding out at what age your mother started menopause might provide an indication of when you’ll start your own. Smoking can also contribute to early menopause, with several studies indicating that long-term or regular smokers are more likely to experience menopause earlier than the average age. ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PREMATURE MENOPAUSE VASTLY DIFFERENT TO A 'NORMAL MENOPAUSE'? Generally, no. For women facing premature menopause or regular menopause, symptoms can include hot flushes, joint aches, night sweats, sleep disturbance, discomfort during sex, as well as mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression. However, it is important to remember that symptoms will vary from woman to woman, so individualised care is vital for proper diagnosis and treatment. HOW LONG ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A PREMATURE MENOPAUSE LIKELY TO LAST? The symptoms of the menopause can last for a variable length of time; for some women the symptoms may last for just a few months, but for many women the symptoms can persist for many years. A US study was released in March which found that the earlier women started experiencing menopausal symptoms, the longer these symptoms lasted – in some cases up to 14 years. WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PREMATURE MENOPAUSE? My goal is to provide individualised care for women tackling the symptoms of premature menopause. I believe that the best way to manage these symptoms is through the safe prescription of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). This replaces the hormones that the body loses during the menopause, including oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Falling levels of these hormones cause a

HEALTH

range of physical and emotional symptoms, including hot flushes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness. There are over 50 different types of HRT, which come in a variety of forms, including percutaneous gels, transdermal patches, or oral hormone therapy. I always encourage my patients to use what works best for them and their lifestyle, and to re-evaluate their dosage and method every six months to make sure they are receiving the best possible treatment. IS IT POSSIBLE FOR A WOMAN GOING THROUGH A PREMATURE MENOPAUSE TO BECOME PREGNANT? Yes, it is possible. In some cases, the woman’s ovaries continue to produce hormones from time to time, and their periods can return. Some women can fall pregnant even after being diagnosed with premature menopause. The longer a woman has been without a period the less likely that there will be some return of ovarian activity and the less likely that she can get pregnant. There is no treatment that can increase the possibility of ovarian activity returning in these cases. However, sadly many women who face premature menopause are unable to fall pregnant. There are few options other than egg donation for these women.

Research has shown that the age at which a woman reaches menopause is likely to be inherited from her mother, so finding out at what age your mother started menopause might provide an indication of when you’ll start your own.

WHAT ARE THE LONG TERM POTENTIAL HEALTH PROBLEMS FOR A WOMAN WHO HAS GONE THROUGH A PREMATURE MENOPAUSE? The onset of menopause can have a long-term effect on the female body, largely caused by oestrogen deficiency. As oestrogen has a protective effect on bones, menopause can lead to bone thinning (osteoporosis). It can also cause cardiovascular disease, and an increased risk of dementia down the line, so it is very important that young women who reach menopause are offered HRT. WHAT HAPPENS IN A PREMATURE MENOPAUSE THAT IS CAUSED BY SURGERY (E.G. WOMB REMOVAL)? When a woman elects to have her ovaries removed, as Angelina Jolie famously did recently, her body will begin to experience the symptoms of menopause almost immediately. This is because the ovaries are the body’s main producer of the hormone oestrogen, so when these are surgically removed the body suddenly faces a major oestrogen deficiency. The plummeting hormone levels can King Edward VII’s cause quite severe menopausal Hospital symptoms straight away. I strongly recommend hormone replacement therapy for women facing surgical menopause, as it is an effective way to counteract the supply of oestrogen that the body has lost.

King Edward VII’s Hospital is an independent, acute private Hospital located in Marylebone, central London. King Edward VII’s Hospital is open to all. For more information: www.kingedwardvii.co.uk

Hair (if we have it…) is often described as our crowning glory. Everyone has good hair days and bad hair days and let’s be honest, bad hair days can make you feel truly awful. We’re all blessed or cursed (!) with different hair texture, colour, tone and degrees of straight, wavy or curly and being human we often wish we’d been born with something different. Whatever hair colour or style you have there is no doubt that it will make you feel great if it looks shiny and glows with health. Keeping hair in tip top condition doesn’t require a huge amount of effort but it does require a little ingenuity. Hair, like everything else, is a reflector of our general health and the bottom line is if you aren’t looking after your stress and nutrition levels no amount of conditioning products are going to permanently disguise unhealthy hair. However, there are some tricks that you can employ to make your hair look its super shiny best, if you’re having a blip. Deep conditioning treatments can be created from products that you may find in your store cupboard. These wonderful natural resources can be used to literally feed hair with soothing nourishment. To treat your hair to a super deep conditioning treatment: 1) Choose your product – egg yolk, natural plain yogurt (definitely not the sugar variety!), olive oil, coconut oil or similar. 2) After washing your hair, towel dry it and then liberally coat your scalp and hair with the oil, egg yolk or yogurt. 3) Next wrap your hair in a shower cap, cling film or a clean towel which you don’t mind getting the product on. 4) Sit back and relax with a cuppa or a good magazine and allow the oil, egg yolk or yoghurt to penetrate your hair shaft. It’s good if you can do this for at least 15 minutes but anything up to 40 minutes for optimum conditioning is desirable. 5) Afterwards rinse your hair in cool water (as this helps to close the hair follicles, leaving the hair looking shiny) until it runs clear. 6) Resist brushing your hair whilst wet, instead opt to use a widetoothed comb to gently untangle your hair and wait until it is dry before you put a brush through it otherwise you can tear your hair and cause split ends to form. If you do this treatment once a week ideally or even once a month - if that’s all you can manage, you will see an improvement in the condition of your hair and the great thing is because you are using store cupboard products it won’t cost a lot of money.

SUPER SHINY HAIR – NATURALLY!

Fab looking hair has got to be top of the list when it comes to making ourselves look and feel a million dollars

Prescription

ADDICTION Addiction to prescription drugs is so rife that more Britons die from taking painkillers and tranquillisers than heroin and cocaine

One helpline has calculated there are at least 32,000 painkiller addicts in Britain, but even that is likely to be an underestimate. Painkillers are the most common addiction prescribed medication. Addiction to` drugs prescribed by your GP is now a real problem within the UK. Dependency is characterised by a feeling of not being able to do without a drug and a desperate need to obtain and consume the drug to alleviate feelings that arise from not having it. Symptoms can include one or more of the following: • Needing to take more of the drug to get the desired effect. • Asking for repeat prescriptions early. • Difficulty in trying to cut down or stop drug use. • Feeling guilty about the drug use.

“Half of women and 43 per cent of men in England are now regularly taking prescription drugs,” BBC News reports. The figures have come to light as part of a new survey into drug prescribing patterns. This survey also found that women (11 per cent) were more likely than men (six per cent) to be taking antidepressants. Women also demonstrated a significant variation by income class. Seven per cent of women in the highest two brackets of income were taking antidepressants, which rose to 17 per cent in the lowest brackets.

• Problems with work, finances or legal issues. • Being secretive about the drug use. • Arguments or disagreements with significant others about the drug use. • Taking other medications to alleviate side effects of prescription drugs. • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when stopping/reducing the drug or between doses. • Continuing to take the drug despite actual or likely negative consequences.

27

There are many dangers and risks with prolonged addiction to medication. These are varied and depend on the type and dose of the drug and can include symptoms such as sedation, lack of coordination, gastrointestinal complaints, depressed respiration, changes in appetite, changes in blood pressure and heart rate, anxiety and depression.

Codeine, if taken regularly over a period of time can produce physical dependence that will result in withdrawal symptoms if ceased. In addition it is possible to create a psychological dependence, for example; when the drug is seen as a coping strategy to lower anxiety. A characteristic of addiction is that the awareness of the excessive and continued use actually increases anxiety.

If you recognise either yourself or a loved one being addicted to prescription medication, there is help available. Your first port of call will be your GP. You will not be judged and you will be supported on a plan to withdraw the addiction safely.

These symptoms can be as simple as deviating from the recommended dose and using the drug without symptoms present. Continuing to increase the dose over a period of time, keeping the use of the tablets secret from others or visiting several different pharmacies from which you buy the drug. (As 32 tablets is the maximum individual purchase).

Addiction can also come from your readily available over the counter drugs such as codeine based analgesics including: Ibruprofen and Codeine and Paracetemol and Codeine. Some cough medicines also contain Codeine.

As a subject, this is not one that us ladies discuss over coffee and certainly not a subject we feel confident in disclosing. By talking about these

subjects, UK Women hope to open the door to know that there are lots of women out there that have similar issues. With a staggering figure of almost half the UK population on prescribed medication, is a small number of addictions from this acceptable? Or should we be promoting a healthier diet, exercise and lifestyle approach?

WHO WAS... Marilyn Monroe

One of the most memorable and adored screen stars of her era Marilyn had inauspicious early beginnings and reinvented herself almost entirely in her short life

The question really is: who was Norma Jeane Mortenson (Marilyn’s birth name)? This notable woman was to use a variety of names throughout her short life and went through three turbulent marriages in the space of 19 years. She died at the tender age of 36 officially from Barbiturate overdose – recorded as a probable suicide. Over the decades many stories have circulated about her death including suggestions of possible mafia involvement and murder – although none of these theories has ever been proved conclusively. A new documentary – Autopsy - has accused her personal physician Dr Hyman Engelberg, of prescribing a lethal cocktail of sleeping pills. It has also revealed significant evidence about Dr Engelberg, who has since

died, showing that he lied, under oath, about the drugs that he had instructed her to take, during the 1982 investigation into her death. Whatever the truth it was a tragic and early end for the legendary actress. Marilyn had a troubled start in life living her early years in a series of foster homes being pushed from pillar to post, eventually resulting in her youthful first marriage to a neighbour’s son and policeman James Dougherty. When Dougherty was away serving in the Merchant Marines Marilyn took up employment in the Radioplanes Munitions Factory and it was here that she got her first ‘lucky break’. The factory was owned by English actor Reginald Denny and during her time there author and documentary maker David Conover, of the U.S. Army Air Forces' First Motion Picture Unit, was sent to the factory to take uplifting pictures of young women helping the war effort. Although the pictures of Marilyn were not used his resulting efforts are sometimes credited with discovering this striking and wily woman. He encouraged her to contact the Blue Book Modelling Agency and she went on to become one of their most successful models. Her success brought her to the attention of Ben Lyon – a 20th Century Fox executive who was partially responsible for her eventual name change to the one we know her as today. Monroe was her mother’s maiden name and after toying with several different first names they settled on Marilyn as an alliterative lucky charm - with Lyon telling Marilyn that she reminded him of Broadway musical star Marilyn Miller, with whom he had once acted as a love interest in the film Her Majesty Love.

WHO IS...

Dr Vandana Shiva

Born in 1952, in Dehradun, India, 62 year old Dr Vandana Shiva has been identified by Time Magazine as an ‘environmental hero’ and in 2010 Forbes Magazine recognised her as one of the ‘Seven Most Powerful Women on the Globe’

Dr. Shiva trained as a Physicist at the University of Punjab, and completed her Ph.D. on the ‘Hidden Variables and Non-locality in Quantum Theory’ from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. She is the author of several books including The Violence of the Green Revolution, which challenges the idea of continuing non-sustainable industrial agriculture and Staying Alive – a book which seriously challenges the common paradigm of technological and economic development as progress and reframes common perceptions of Third World women, shining a light on how women, more than simply surviving the challenges brought on by development, are safeguarding sources of knowledge and creating new visions of not only how to stay alive, but the importance of survival. As part of her continued interest in supporting women, Dr Shiva founded the gender unit

at the International Centre for Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu, and was a founding Board Member of the Women Environment and Development Organization (WEDO). She also initiated Diverse Women for Diversity, an international movement of women working for food and agriculture. In 1982 Dr Shiva founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology to conduct independent research into the most pressing ecological and social issues of our time such as world globalisation and climate change. In 1991 additionally she founded a national movement called Navdanya (meaning nine seeds) designed to protect ‘living resources’ such as native seed and promote and support organic farming and fair trade. Navdanya is a network of seed keepers and organic producers spread across 17 states in India. Navdanya has worked with local organisations over the last two decades and this has resulted in the conservation of more than 3,000 rice varieties from across India. Internationally, Dr. Shiva serves on Prince Charles’s expert group on Sustainable Agriculture and she is a member of President Zapatero’s Scientific Committee in Spain. She also advises governments worldwide, and is currently working with the Government of Bhutan to make Bhutan 100 per cent organic. Dr. Shiva has campaigned internationally on issues surrounding biotechnology and genetic engineering. She has helped movements in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Ireland, Switzerland and Austria with their campaigns against genetic engineering.

WHO'S UK... Sara Bell Tempus Energy founder Sara Bell is one of the only women in the UK to head up an energy company in what is traditionally a hard hitting, male dominated industry. She is choosing to look at energy supply in a unique way Sara grew up in Sweden after her family relocated there when she was a baby. At the age of 11 she moved to England, a transition that was difficult for language and cultural reasons. This experience left her with a lifelong sympathy with the underdog or outsider. After immigrating to Australia at the age of 21 and trying different careers and ventures Sarah moved to Hong Kong; whilst there she married and gave birth to the first of her three children; she also established a successful venture as part of the internet boom. The company was successfully sold and Sara went to university in Sydney to complete a Masters degree. After completing the degree Sara began energy efficiency and climate change and clean tech consulting in South East Asia. She developed a strong interest in Smart Grids and the challenges of integrating renewable energy cost effectively. In 2010 she moved to London and established the Future Networks Commercial Strategy Team at UK Power Networks (owners of the London electricity distribution network). This role was the starting point for her to examine the whole electricity value chain and apply her prior financial experience to think differently about how we manage the electricity system. In 2012 Sara established Tempus Energy and began designing the business model and technology platform that enables Tempus to focus on making energy cost as low as possible for customers and will disaggregate the current electricity industry business models. As the world moves to a lower carbon energy system there is an opportunity to change the way the system is managed that will lead to lower cost, more opportunities to create jobs and a more secure global environment. Progress has been much slower than it could be as it is not in the commercial interest of large fossil fuel companies to make the energy system efficient. Sara believes the key to making this change happen is to demonstrate to electricity customers that there is something in it for them by delivering every penny of value possible into their pockets. This is the mission that Sara is currently pursuing.

Sara explains: “For too long, the electricity system has focused purely on delivering profits for generators, rather than value for customers. Customers deserve a system which is smart and efficient enough to do both.

Would you like additional revenue?

BB UK

Yes Please!

BUSINESS BANK EXCHANGE

BBX is a complimentary currency that works in addition to core revenue, enabling businesses to sell what they haven't been able to in a less competitive marketplace

www.contempopr.co.uk

About 60 per cent of businesses experience ‘Spare Capacity’ on a regular basis in the form of vacant hotel rooms, empty restaurant tables, unsold advertising space, unfilled appointment times, slow moving or surplus stock… costing UK business owners billions of pounds a year.

their Spare Capacity to other businesses within the BBX community in exchange for BBX pounds. Accounting for this in a business is simple as one BBX pound is accounted for in the same way as one pound sterling and can be used in any of the 12 countries that the BBX community is established.

Jill at Contempo PR said: “By unlocking Spare Capacity in our business we have saved thousands of pounds. Spare Capacity for our company Contempo PR came in the form of under-utilised staff and therefore the ability to take on an extra PR client every other month."

Jill at Contempo PR has found utilising the BBX facility very simple:

BBX is an international company who work with businesses that find themselves with Spare Capacity that they would like to turn into additional revenue without discounting or eroding their core business. By adopting the BBX payment facility the business can sell

“Once I established I could handle another customer I contact my local account manager at BBX who promotes me within the community and sends me an additional client. By using BBX to sell our Spare Capacity we have seen an increase in sales, saved on costs, and improved our bottom line profitability. “We spend our BBX pounds on such things as printing, design, roller banners, business cards, accounting services,

business advice, restaurant meals and hotel stays to name but a few! But also as business owners, we can use our BBX pounds on personal purchases too, which adds value to the income from our business. “With such a large and varied database of clients using this service, it is a fantastic way to save on your cash flow and at the same time afford the extras within your business. There is such a wide variety of businesses now using BBX within the UK.”

Giulia's debut album Raze Me To the Ground is available now on iTunes www.giuliaofficial.com

Beauty Fresh from supporting Anastacia at The 02 Shepherd’s Bush Empire stunning European singer/songwriter and fledgling fashion guru Giulia is giving her ever increasing fan-base a taster of things to come with her debut album Giulia is a young Italian with competitive ambition and passionate expression firmly woven into the fabric of her soul. Born in Rome to Marco Doná dalle Rose, who was a professional polo player, and Flavia Persone - a successful fashion entrepreneur, Giulia experienced an eclectic and well-travelled childhood as her family moved from Italy to Argentina, then back to Europe before she decided to focus her musical development in the cultural and creative melting pot of London. Julia’s first single - Turn Your Light On - co-written with Don Mescal (Rascal Flatts, Clay Aiken, Backstreet Boys, Boyzone etc), with production by Don Mescal and Tom Nichols (Celine Dion, All Saints, Sugababes, Hall & Oates and Kylie Minogue to name but a few), was released last April from her debut

album written and produced in London in collaboration with Tom Nichols. Her early years in Argentina exposed Giulia to the music that firmly embedded itself in her subconscious and went on to influence her later writing and recording style. Running in parallel to her musical exploits, 2015 also sees Giulia don the fashion mantel as she launches her debut fashion collection in partnership with Anna Sammarone. Bold lines, stunning fabrics and creative twists bring a gorgeous and inspiring fashion collection under the guiding hand of Giulia, who learnt the trade from her mother. Giulia took time out of her increasingly busy schedule to talk to UK Women about her music and fashion line.

WHO OR WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN MUSICAL INFLUENCES? As an artist I am influenced or inspired by many things. I fell in love with country rock and soul music – such as Shania Twain, Etta James, Jonny Cash and Elvis – who I still listen to every day. In my teens I was inspired by bands such as Aerosmith and Lynyrd Skynyrd and artists like Avril Lavigne WHY COUNTRY ROCK? WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THIS GENRE? I love every type of music honestly - good music is good music, but there's something about country, I just can't explain it - it represents me better than anything and when I hear that music I feel things that I don't feel with any other type of music. Country music can be fun, rockish, sentimental and sad all at once. WHAT WAS IT LIKE SUPPORTING ANASTACIA? Opening for Anastacia was super exciting! Being able to perform to that type of crowd was amazing. They were so supportive. Anastacia is such an incredible singer and performer and I learnt so much just by watching her on stage. I was so lucky to be able to do this. We rehearsed a lot as we wanted to sound great and not upset any of her fans! TELL ME ABOUT YOUR INTEREST IN FASHION AND COLLABORATION WITH ANNA SAMMARONE I always have been interested in fashion - it’s an art form as well as another way to express yourself, I'm not obsessed with it but I like it a lot! My collaboration with Anna is very simple; my mum used to work with her and truly believes in her as do I, so we thought why not try something together? Let’s build a project, let’s be partners and try to make it together! And now we are 50/50 partners in launching her collections. WHO OR WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST FASHION INFLUENCES? I don’t have precise fashion influences! I like people’s minds, so I guess I like it when people dress depending on their personality - that’s what you call style! I like it when people are a little daring and wear things they want just because they feel like it! People who are not afraid of expressing themselves; of course you have to feel good about yourself, so as long as it makes you feel good and happy - that’s the right look! WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE UK? ANY PARTICULAR MUSICAL OR FASHION INFLUENCES THAT EMANATE FROM HERE? What I love about the UK is the craziness of the people, I mean compared to Italians - they do what they feel like doing, and that’s the same with fashion; they don't follow a precise fashion style or order, they just wake up in the morning and wear what they feel like! Sometimes it’s a big fashion crime! But usually it’s fun and very creative. I also find that English men can be very elegant! England can be very formal in some ways so that is apparent in a lot of fashion.

How’s your Online Networking? Whilst social media as an Internet phenomenon is still relatively new to us - Facebook doesn't reach its 10th birthday as a public social network until September 2016 - the idea of networking socially has been around ever since the first handshake. Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, said, “Man is by nature a social animal”. We thrive through social interaction and our development as individuals (and consequently business) is shaped within the society we live. But what about the way that ‘social’ works in the online world from a business perspective? Whilst many businesses would describe themselves as on social media, what does that mean and does the way businesses do social media, authentically reflect how social interaction works in the offline world? It’s sad but true to say, that the actions of many businesses in social media today are more about social broadcast than social networking. They are focused on marketing their wares but sadly ignorant of those around them. In many cases all they are doing is adding to the noise, not engaging in a conversation with potential customers. So how’s your online networking? Is it social? Cracking Media is a digital marketing consultancy and services company based in Dorset, visit: crackingmedia.com or call 01202 532522

Sandbanks is a small peninsula that is home to some of the most expensive land and property in Britain. A long and beautiful beach stretches out from Sandbanks surrounding a shallow bay. It has been awarded the coveted ‘European Blue Flag’ award, the criteria of which includes environmental concerns and management, water quality, as well as safety and services. The beach is renowned by locals for its cleanliness and crystal clear sea waters. The waters of the beach are also very shallow and ideal for families to bathe in and the area is also something of a mecca for water sports’ fans, particularly windsurfers.

It is without doubt the English Riviera and is the destination of dreams if you like the finer things in life such as unspoilt natural beauty, top restaurants and a vibrant, happy atmosphere

The famous chain ferry is a popular mode of transport in Sandbanks as it rolls back and forth between the peninsula and the beautiful beaches of Studland. The ferry gives almost instant access to the gorgeous Purbecks and it is even worth taking a trip on the chain ferry just for a perfect view of the harbour. The Sandbanks peninsula is the residence of several big names and attracts a high-end luxury and, some would say, hedonistic lifestyle. It is without doubt the English Riviera and is the destination of dreams if you like the finer things in life such as unspoilt natural beauty, top restaurants and a vibrant, happy atmosphere. If you are visiting the south coast it is a place that you should stop to pause and take in the view. Sandbanks offers a range of top hotels for your stay including the FJB trio of the Haven Hotel, Sandbanks Hotel and Harbour Heights Hotel – each offering panoramic views set in premium locations. Sandbanks also contains a vast range of rental properties and apartments, for those who prefer self-catering. The views across the bay are uniquely stunning and on a sunny day there is definitely a feeling that you could be anywhere in the world. www.fjbhotels.co.uk

One thing that Sandbanks is not short on is restaurants and cafés with breath-taking views offering fresh fish, mussels and other lush freshly sourced produce. Nearby Branksome Beach Restaurant originated in 1930s and originally housed the UK’s first solarium. The original building’s colourful ceramic plaque is still displayed above the door. www.branksomebeach.co.uk The thematic Jazz Café is set in the heart of Sandbanks and offers an ambient chilled vibe with immediate access to the beach. It also welcomes wellbehaved dogs on leads. It serves ‘home-cooked’ meals with regular entertainment from the Jazz Café’s house band. www.jazzcafesandbanks.co.uk Each summer Sandbanks is host to the Asahi Beach Polo Championships attracting top competitors from around the country for a festival of polo, champagne and partying on the beach. This year’s event takes place from 11th to 15th July. For further details visit www.sandpolo.com

GREEN FEATURE

SOARING WITH SOLAR If you are looking at ways to reduce your impact on the environment a solar panel system offers significant benefits With green and environmental concerns increasingly preoccupying people’s minds consumers are becoming more aware of where their energy supply comes from. At the same time they are considering ways that they can still receive an adequate supply of electricity with less environmental impact. Our most obvious source of free energy supply is the sun - hence the rising popularity of solar panels. Solar panels on a building capture the sun’s energy using something called Photovoltaic Cells (PV). Without getting too technical PV was discovered by the young French physicist Alexandre-Edmund Becquerel in 1839 and it is the process by which a solar (sun) cell converts sunlight into electricity. Solar panels secure the sun's energy using PV cells. These cells are able to

operate without direct sunlight – so even on a dull, cloudy day electricity is still generated. The sunlight that is converted into electricity can be used to run household appliances and lighting. There are many benefits to using a solar panel system – not only does it offer a sustainable source of renewable energy, it can also reduce electricity bills – after all sunlight is one of the few free resources – so once the installation of the solar panels has been paid for consumers will find a very welcome reduction in their bills. The UK government also operates a Feedin-Tariff scheme which pays the user for the electricity the system generates. Users can also sell electricity back to the grid through the Feed-In-Tariff. Large energy suppliers are required by law to make Feed-in Tariff payments to the customer and some smaller suppliers are opting in to this scheme. Consumers can also cut their carbon footprint significantly as solar energy doesn’t release any harmful carbon dioxides or pollutants into the atmosphere. So over the course of a year a solar panel system, installed in the home, could save almost two tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the environment. And further good news is that solar panel systems have a long lifespan. Typically manufacturers will offer a 25 year warranty, although some systems have been known to perform in excess of 45 years. In southern England a 4kWp solar electricity generating system (which is the typical requirement for a household’s annual electricity needs) can create around 3,800 kilowatt hours of electricity a year (this varies in

If you are thinking of purchasing solar panels, and want to benefit from the Feedin-Tariff scheme, you must ensure that both the products and the company that you use to install them are certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) - so do check this out when making a purchasing decision. different areas). The average domestic solar PV costs around £5,000 - £8,000 (including VAT at five per cent).

CAR REVIEW

DISCO FEVER The launch of a new Land Rover almost has a touch of the Lion King about it. Born to a ruling family with a proud heritage, the new Discovery Sport is just such a special newborn. Effectively replacing the ageing, but popular Freelander in the range, the Sport is everything you'd expect from a Land Rover and more. It’s claimed to be ‘the world's most versatile and capable premium compact SUV’ and I wouldn't argue with that. Initially only available with the one engine - a 2.2-litre 188bhp diesel - I drove manual and automatic versions of the new ‘Disco’ and my only quibble is over its name. Why call it the Sport? Yes, it shifts pretty well for a car not far off two tonnes, reaching 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds with a top speed of 117mph, but it doesn't quite have the looks or performance to compare with its posh big brother, the Range Rover Sport, for instance. That said, the Discovery Sport is a fine 4x4 and will have the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Volvo CX60 quaking in their wellie boots. It's not just an attractive car, it's cleverly designed and engineered too. Minimum overhang front and rear means it's very capable off-road, while the interior packaging is ground-breaking. Not only does it ooze space, there's the commanding driving position you'd expect, while the materials used are a fine balance between practicality and comfort.

The Discovery Sport also has a party trick up its sleeve which sets it apart from the opposition. It's a genuine 5 + 2, possessing a third row of seats, which are not just for occasional use by children under five, but perfectly useable by adults too. I'm a fraction under six foot and - once I'd clambered in - I could sit in the seats comfortably, but if you want more legroom, the second row bench seat is on rails and can be pushed forward. Yes, you lose a little of the limo-like space at the rear, but it's a small price to pay for that versatility now and again. I tried the Sport on a mixture of roads and a motorway and it drives well. The ride is smooth and not too firm, and good though the six-speed manual is, most buyers will choose the slick nine-speed (yes, nine-speed!) automatic. The launch engine isn't the most economical or green in its class, but more efficient units are expected later in 2015. Land Rover claims the current diesel will deliver around 4446mpg, emitting 162g/km of CO2.

Gareth Herincx gets to grips with the Discovery Sport - the new ‘baby’ Land Rover

The interior has a quality feel and all the kit you'd expect in a premium SUV including a new eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system which controls all the usual suspects including the radio, car data and smartphone connectivity. There are plenty of storage spaces and with the third row of seats folded down, the boot boasts a healthy 981-litre capacity. Fold the second row flat and the available space rises to a cavernous 1,698 litres. I also took the Sport off-road at Land Rover's proving ground in Warwickshire and it coped effortlessly with everything thrown at it, shrugging off steep gradients, mud, rocks and rivers. The Sport uses a Terrain Response system, leaving the driver to select the right set-up for different conditions such as Snow, Mud and Sand. In addition, there's Hill Descent Control, Traction Control and Stability Control.

It also features driver aids and safety systems including automatic emergency braking which uses a digital stereo camera mounted next to the rear view mirror to detect objects that could pose a collision threat, delivering warnings and automatically applying the brakes if a collision is imminent. The emergency braking was one of the factors that helped the Sport gain a maximum five star safety rating from Euro NCAP. Summary: Competitively priced from £32,395 - £42,995, the versatile new Discovery Sport is a fine addition to the Land Rover range. Well built, safe, beautifully engineered and designed, it's a pleasure to drive as an everyday car, whilst also being highly capable off-road.

MALLAMS RESTAURANT, Weymouth

Mallams Restaurant is tucked away on the famous and beautiful Weymouth quay. The property blends into the historic seafaring town and enjoys fabulous views over the harbour and the bright colours of the houses and fishing boats.

Mallams is an unassuming grade two listed building which, as you enter the small door, opens up into light, friendly and very welcoming eatery. Steve and Janice, who incidentally have just celebrated their 25th year of very successful business at Mallams, have maintained and continue to do so a level of excellence continually delivering delightful dishes and great service. You may be surprised to know that Mallams is known locally for its excellent cocktail menu including the Ben and Rita cocktail. This was designed in celebration of Sir Ben Ainsley’s Gold medal win in the local water at Weymouth in the 2012 Olympics. Like any great restaurant the combination of old favourites such as black mussels and excitingly majestic combinations such as Lyme Bay scallops with black pudding topped off with crispy bacon make the joy of eating here a true delight. However, if your palate would rather head towards landed food then the Jurassic coast provides excellent lamb and beef all perfectly and delicately

combined in a number of dishes to compare to any of Mallams’ fish masterpieces. To accompany any food an excellent wine list is essential and Steve and Janice do not disappoint. They supply wines from home and abroad, from Devon to Spain but still do not forget the non-drinkers with a delicious combination of non- alcoholic beverages. As a surprising addition Mallams has a spacious holiday apartment that looks over the harbour waters and offers a perfect base to explore the town and surrounding area. So if you are looking for excellent food, a delightful outlook and a very warm and friendly welcome, you can do no better than Mallams. Food for thought, this is a restaurant that has been very successful and in the same hands for 25 years. Only constant vigilance and care over all they do can achieve that. The Perks of Being Round During a Pilates class, our thin teacher apologised to one of her larger students for blocking her view of herself in the mirror. “Don’t worry,” the woman said. “I can see myself on either side of you.”
