Dear Friends of New York Medical College (NYMC),

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” - Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

The opening lines of Dickens’ novel are an apt description of academic health care and biomedical science in 2021-2022.

“It was the best of times…it was the age of wisdom…”

Never in the history of humankind have we gone from the identification of a new infectious disease to the design, construction, testing and dissemination of a new effective vaccine with such extraordinary speed.

“It was the worst of times…it was the age of foolishness….”

The wholesale frontal assault on scientific knowledge and the value of expert opinion, accompanied by the promulgation of nonsensical pseudoscience and false claims, have distressed the medical and scientific communities.

“It was the spring of hope….”

In troubled times for public health and scientific knowledge, we can take hope from the fact that institutions that exist for the generation, conservation and dissemination of knowledge, like NYMC, have stood steadfastly at their posts, doing what needs to be done to educate, conduct research and serve the sick.

Philanthropy is a fundamentally hopeful act. Thank you for being part of that act of hope by supporting NYMC at this year’s Founder’s Dinner.

Sincerely yours, Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A. Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to New York Medical College’s 2022 Founder’s Dinner. Your generous support of this event, along with your dedication to NYMC, allow us to continue educating outstanding health care professionals and biomedical scientists.

Our College community seems to have rounded the bend of the COVID-19 pandemic and all that it has entailed. In graduate health professions education, however, it is our responsibility to maintain fidelity to core principles while continually adapting to changing circumstances. We continue to receive a record number of applications for admission to the School of Medicine and enroll classes with the highest academic achievements. Similarly, our Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences welcomed a new class of Ph.D. candidates with record-high academic metrics.

Our faculty generated and published a vast amount of knowledge about the causes, prevention and treatment of human disease and disability. We also conducted vital clinical and basic science research into the management of the pandemic, while also conducting online symposia to educate health care providers and the general public about not only developments in the pandemic but also its medical and public health management. Our clinicians have remained on the front lines of patient care at all times, while our faculty have appeared on television, been heard on the radio, and were quoted in print media, dispensing sound advice. In all, we have confirmed the truth that our College has a proud past, a vital present, and an exciting future.

Tonight, we celebrate several crucial parts of the NYMC story and honor a number of outstanding faculty. We thank you for being part of tonight’s important stories.

During her tenure as a senior leader at NYMC, she created a comprehensive SOM advisory dean program modeled on a college house system in June 2014, with the goal of 100 percent of students receiving individual longitudinal career and professional mentorship.

As it says in the Ethics of the FathersChapter 4 Verse 1—
“Who is honored? He that honors mankind”
You have been my teacher, you have been my mentor but most importantlyyou have been my friend.

WE RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THANE ROSENBAUM

Distinguished Professor at Touro University.

His incisive and penetrating publicly broadcast live interviews, with world renown political and intellectual personalities as part of Touro’s Forum on Legal and Public Affairs, has placed Touro at the cutting edge of American, Israeli, and Jewish discussion and thought.

Professor Rosenbaum’s essays in the mass media about the often misguided and hypocritical statements issued by various secular and Jewish organization’s “ leaders”, speaks out loud, to what many of us only dare think.

We hope Professor Rosenbaum will continue his fearless and courageous platform of interviews, essays, and defending the values of the Touro University community, in the international arena.
