"We sold our Grimsby home in August after only one day on the market with the amazing assistance of Zoi and her team. We had multiple offers including two that were above asking. The outcome was swift, positive, and more than what we were expecting! We attribute this to Zoi’s gifted staging abilities, professionalism, and negotiating skills on our behalf. Zoi is very detailed and we felt it was the details that made a big difference in the end. The outcome enabled us to close the deal of a home we conditionally purchased in Fonthill. With all her years of experience, Zoi presented the best features of our home. She is very knowledgeable, insightful, and knows the market well. Her team was supportive and responsive throughout the whole process. We would highly recommend her! " - Paula & Mike O.

NOTICE TO RESIDENTS Sport-related Objects on Municipal Roadways The Town of Grimsby is responsible for the control and maintenance of local municipal roadways within the Town. We are therefore mindful of any sport-related objects (e.g. hockey nets, basketball nets, skateboard ramps, etc.) placed along the municipal road edge that could interfere with municipal operations or provide a conflict with pedestrians and/or vehicles using the roadway.

Smiles for Life

Dr. Joe & Associates Family & Cosmetic Dentistry has been whitening smiles and changing young lives through Smiles for Life Foundation. From March to June, Dr. Joe and his Grimsby team donated teeth whitening services for the charity which takes dental services to children in need around the world. Half the proceeds were given to McNally House Hospice, $2,512. On hand for the presentation were: (L-R) Carey Paolasini, Amanda Black, McNally House, Dr. Joe Paolasini and Dr. Alana Paolasini. McDonald – Photo

Although the Town does not encourage or condone sports or games being played on the roadway or provide permission to residents to place sport-related objects (nets, ramps, etc.) on the municipal road allowance, we recognize that this does occur throughout the Town. In an effort to reduce/eliminate the potential for these objects to interfere/conflict with the normal operation and maintenance of the roadway, we encourage residents to ensure any unattended nets and ramps be placed/stored outside of the roadway when they are not being used. If your street has a concrete curb, we ask all unattended objects be pulled back far enough so that the front portion of the object (e.g. rim/frame) is at least 60 cm (24 inches) behind the back of the curb. For areas with granular or grassed shoulders/ditches, we ask that the objects be stored a minimum of 1.5 metres (5 feet) back from the edge of the road surface. During the winter season, we ask that all objects be removed completely from the municipal road allowance and stored on private property. This will help to avoid any conflict with winter road/sidewalk operations and remove any potential damage by our equipment. Please note the Town is not responsible for any damage to objects placed within the municipal road allowance. Furthermore, Town staff will remove any objects which are found to be persistently left on/within the roadway. We thank you for your efforts to keep unattended sport-related objects (nets, ramps, etc.) off the municipal roadways and appreciate your co-operation in helping the Town efficiently and safely maintain our roadways. Brandon Wartman Director Public Works

Volunteer Pay Subscription Drive

“What a newspaper needs in its news, in its headlines, and on its editorial page is terseness, humour, descriptive power, satire, originality, good literary style, clever condensation, and accuracy, accuracy, accuracy! Joseph Pulitzer

Dear Reader, Here we are, against all odds, in our 11th year of publishing. Our little paper that started in the basement of our house has flourished into what you are reading today. We’ve had ups and downs, two printing plant closures, sale of our distribution company, a world-wide pandemic and... we are still here. Because of you, good reader - as well as our loyal and dedicated advertising base - through ensuring great response via your intense readership as well as your generous subscriptions. We truly appreciate your support!

Based on the excellent feedback from previous years’ volunteer pay subscription drives, we have launched Year 6! Is NewsNow’s independent, accurate voice in the community of value to you? Would you like to support NewsNow in its efforts? This is your opportunity.

If yes, we have refined the infrastructure for our Volunteer Pay System

Simply, this means, rain (or snow) or shine, you will always – each and every week – receive your copy of NewsNow. Whether you live in a single-detached home, apartment, condo or at a business, NewsNow is now everywhere – 29,000-plus circulation strong. That will NOT change!!!!

Subscriptions:

One Year - $50 suggested

We will back HST out of each payment to make things as simple as possible. You can pay by cheque (bring into the office or mail), credit card (call Catherine at 289-235-9500) or e-transfer (send to: subscriptions@wn3.ca - make security answer - newsnow ) For more information, please do not hesitate to call, email or drop in. All inquiries are welcome!!

Thanks very much for your time and we wish good health to you all!

Handmade hug from grateful Canadians

Remembering those that gave so much for us.

LEST WE

By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow Members of the Smithville Quilters’ Guild have wrapped their hearts and a whole lot of stitches around six quilts that are on their way to members of the Canadian Armed Forces. A handmade hug from the Smithville quilters, each one is a gift of gratitude that will be distributed through Quilts of Valour – Canada, to an injured CAF member in recognition of their service and commit-

ment to the country. Quilts of Valour representative Alison McDonald was on hand Thursday to bundle up the quilts for delivery. As a CAF veteran, McDonald knows the meaning of service and she sees the warmth and security the quilts bring to the CAF members who receive them. “We have soldiers who have been injured physically and psychologically in the theatre of war as well as in training,” Mc-

Donald said. “They are overwhelmed with the gift. It says somebody cares and somebody is paying attention.” Quilts of Valour is on a mission to ensure that injured CAF members are recognized for their serviceand commitment to the country. Volunteers have presented quilts to thousands of recipients who are coping with injuries both visible and invisible. McDonald said it’s See QUILTS, Page 15

QUILTS

From Page 14 through the talent and commitment of volunteers, including the Smithville Quilters’ Guild that the quilts can reach so many. The Smithville Quilters’ Guild has been meeting for more than 20 years - 4th Thursday of the month, September to June, from 1-3 p.m. in the basement of the Smithville United Church, located at 126 West St.

Together, they learn new and old quilting techniques and share their projects. They are currently running a Block of the Month, a Mystery Quilt, and a Strip exchange. “We are also active in community service by making place-

mats for the Meals on Wheels program, small quilts for the McMaster neonatal unit, quilts for cancer patients for the Victoria’s Quilts Canada and more,” said past president Nancy Vandenberg. “New members are always welcome.”

Secrecy surrounded original unknown soldier On November 7th, 1920, in strictest secrecy, four unidentified British bodies were exhumed from temporary battlefield cemeteries at Ypres, Arras, the Asine and the Somme. None of the soldiers who did the digging were told why. The bodies were taken to General Head Quarters and their coffins were draped with the union flag. One was selected randomly. The following day, a specially made oak casket was made for that

soldier. A crusader’s sword and a shield on which was inscribed: “A British Warrior who fell in the GREAT WAR 1914-1918 for King and Country”. After a ceremony in Dover, where he remained there overnight, on the morning of the 11th of November, he was finally taken to Westminster Abbey. The intention was to give focus to the grieving of family and friends of those lost at war, as are poppies.

A financial helping hand key to growth Town of Lincoln gets it - with its economic development strategies. It has been shown time and again, the more direct any level of government support is, the better those dollars are invested. Yes, there are provincial and federal programs for tourism and economic development, but this $25,000 round of tourism investment to support local businesses develop and enhance local attractions is huge. Funds like that in the hands of people who are being creative and attempting to further the attraction of the municipality will come back to the Town in many ways over many years. A dollar spent in a community circulates seven times before it leaves. Good on Lincoln council recognizing that, M.W.

An uncomfortable flashback As often happens, I was at the grocery store last week and a new resident who reads the paper stopped to chat about affairs of the Town et al, mainly Lincoln in this case, but other issues, too. Among the questions were how did I get here.... and why? The how is a very long story....the why was simple, and best told by one anecdote in particular which exemplifies what needs to be done to achieve one’s goals. I came to Grimsby to run the old Independent, West Lincoln Review and Weekend Focus. Let’s just say, the Independent had fallen out of favour with just about everyone for a vast array of reasons. A key organization which had severed ties was Grimsby Minor Hockey. At that time, Bob Richmond, who ran the beginning kids’ skating school - and his wife Carol - were very much the face of GMHS. My first interaction with this couple came May 11, 1995. I remember the date exactly as I started my new job as managing editor the day before. On that first day, I spent much of the day asking who I should speak to in an attempt mend fences. There were people in various walks of life who were mentioned sporadically but - on the sporting side - the Richmonds were mentioned universally as being respected and having their respective fingers on the pulse of

MIKE WILLISCRAFT the community. A quick phone call resulted in an immediate invite and at the prescribed hour I ventured over to their Casablanca Boulevard home. After a brief introduction at the door, Carol led me back to the inner sanctum, also known as their beautifully landscaped backyard. Bob and Carol were just about to take a lunch break from gardening. “I was just about to whip up some sandwiches,” Carol said. “Nothing fancy.” “That would be great,” I responded. As she headed off, Bob and I started what would turn out to be a two-plus hour conversation about anything and everything in the Town of Grimsby. Both Carol and Bob were walking encyclopedias of information and were very willing to share their knowledge. They were very careful to frame what was fact and what was their opinion of certain situations, very tactful. For someone brand new to the community looking

for a lifeline, these folks were it for me. When people are that involved, they get to know everyone. Essentially, from that day on, if I needed something, a contact name or phone numbers, or something happened I could not quite understand, I could give the Richmonds a call and find out what the real story was. And that level of trust was secure as they have not steered me wrong, ever. When Carol returned with a tray of eats there were a couple of glasses of iced tea and two of the best tomato sandwiches - fresh from their garden of course - you’ve ever seen, complete with mayo, lettuce and lightly toasted. Only problem, and I am not a picky eater, I have always hated raw tomatoes. Cooked or in a sauce, no problem. Raw? Nope. No chance. Well not that day. I ate every bit and every crumb off the plate. They were so good they made me want to like tomato sandwiches, but that day has still not arrived. After lunch and more lengthy chatting, I excused myself so they could return to their yardwork. I left their home with a full tummy and two great friends. There are hundreds, if not thousands in the community who have Richmond stories. This is merely one, and it set me on my path to achieve my goals in Niagara West.
