Seaborn claims 171 fatalities at school zones during report

Grimsby council agrees speed camera signage needs improvement

Along with some numbers which made sense, Grimsby Reg. Coun.

Michelle Seaborn reported a couple of number in a speed camera update on April 15 which had town council members scratching their respective heads.

Seaborn provided some statistics

regarding the end of the first quarter of operation for Niagara’s speed camera system, noting:

• Over 15,000 tickets given out from September to December 2023 in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and West Lincoln - the first communities where the cameras were operational;

• There were 181 infractions per

hour per day;

• By December, that was down to 60 tickets per hour per day, a 67 per cent drop, and;

• The average speed through Grimsby’s Park School camera location is 42 kph;

“The current camera in Grimsby for Park Road will cease to record on April 22.”

“How far back did they go?” asked Coun. Don Howe.

“Excessive speeds in Community Safety Zones were responsible for 171 fatal accidents prior to the unanimous decision by the Region and all the municipalities to make our roads safer for pedestrians,” Seaborn claimed.

Seaborn said that number was provided by Niagara Region’s transportation department and she did not know how far back research went. She added that crossing guards make the reports.

“That is one helluva a number,” Howe retorted.

While Seaborn noted the camera would not be active at Park School after April 22, she did say the 40 kmh speed limit would still be in place from 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

As well, she noted the camera at Blessed Trinity will be active in June.

“There’s not kids going to school in June, July and August but the speed will remain at 50 kph so the nice thing is you don’t have a slow down at that point,” said Seaborn.

Coun. Nick DiFlavio asked Seaborn why the Park School location was being deactivated.

“I don’t like speed cameras, but I know they work. Everybody who knows that the camera is there slows down to 40 kph. So why put the camera there if it’s not going to

be working all the time?” he said.

Seaborn said the Region has only purchased four cameras and it is rotating them around, adding a Toronto company runs the system.

As well, she noted problems with the signage in the Park School area.

“They take those flashing lights away and say, ‘you had the big yellow sign and you had those speed limits there to remind you of what the speed is. It is my hope, I have spoken to the transportation director and asked him to put flashing lights there. So, once the speed camera comes off, I’m hoping new lights telling people it’s 40 (kph) will be put in its place. And, I’ve got to admit, that one set of signs, the number 40 is really small.”

While Coun. Lianne Vardy said several aspects of signage needs improvement, Coun. Veronica Charrois noted, if the issue is children safety, the hours of activation for the 40 kmh limit should be adjusted.

“You can’t really justify it,” she said of the all-day speed reduction as students are only coming and going in the morning and later in the afternoon.

OBITUARIES

BELFRY, Grant

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Grant Belfry on February 29 2024, in his 82nd year, surrounded by his family. Grant leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years Sharon (Copeman); his son Craig (Gina), his daughter Sandra (Jeff); and his cherished grandchildren Keegan, Nyah, Owen and Theo. Grant is survived by his sister Joan; his brother Frank (Cathy) and family; his sister Karen (Rick); his brother Gordon; and his sister in law Arlene and family. He was predeceased by his mother Marion (Coome); father William Belfry; and his friend Phineas.

Grant attended Westdale Secondary School and was a member of the Hamilton City Champion 1961-62 Senior Basketball Team and later was a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University. Grant worked for forty years at Stelco as a Senior Melter and Supervisor in the BOF.

With a wonderful and abundant passion for life, Grant especially enjoyed talking with people and bringing life to every party. Summers at YMCA Geneva Park were a highlight. His grandchildren were extremely important to him, and he enjoyed attending as many Burlington Teen Tour Band parades, Nexxice skating competitions, Clarington Knights football, North Durham Warriors hockey, and Clarington Orioles baseball team games as he could. He was an avid golfer, bridge player, curler, and pickleball player.

Grant and Sharon enjoyed a very happy life together. They have had many exciting adventures. Family and friends relish recounting a lifetime of heartwarming memories, anecdotes, and funny stories.

We would like to invite family and friends to please join us for the Celebration of Grant’s Life which will take place on Saturday May 25th from 2:00 pm-5:00 pm at the Burlington Golf and Country Club. Donations in his memory can be sent to Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice in Hamilton or to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Grimsby. Thank you to Dr. Salib and the staff at the Walker Clinic and the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice for providing such wonderful care.

Bryan James Dixon, Cranbrook B.C

1934-2024

OBITUARIES

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Bryan James Dixon in his 90th year on March 15th, 2024 in the city of Grimsby. He leaves behind his loving wife Manja, and their faithful pup Ollie, as well as his children Michael, Lee Anna, Bryan, Paul, and Tanja, his grandchildren Melissa, Johnathon, Lyra, Zacheriah, Maxx, and Noah, his brothers- and sisters-in-law Lucy and Dave, Rose-Mary and Bill, his sons-in-law Craig, Terry and Stephen, and his daughters-in-law Erin and Carla. He was predeceased by his son John, ex-wife Doris, brother Robert, sister-in-law Colleen, and sister Kathleen.

Bryan was a proud Air Canada pilot for 35 years, beginning on the DC-3 when Air Canada was still TCA. During his career, Bryan flew the Viscount and Vanguard, before being promoted to Captain on the DC-8, DC-9, L-1011, 727 and 767. He retired in 1991, but came out of retirement to teach on Air Canada’s new Airbus A320. His many hobbies included carpentry, boating, and skiing, and Bryan was a member of the Burlington Model Flying Club. Bryan loved to build and over his lifetime he constructed two homes, refurbished his prized full sized J3 Piper Cub, built and flew a Zenair plane, and built his own 22ft sailboat . Much of the furniture in his and his family’s homes has his signature on it, as well as the wooden rocking horses and train tables for his grandchildren’s enjoyment.

Bryan loved retirement life and had a passion for travel. He and Manja spent many wonderful years adventuring in their motor home, sailing in Georgian Bay and afar, enjoying many cruises and vacations abroad with friends, and wintering in warm climates. They called Naples, Florida their winter home for over 20 years and Bryan cherished the memories and lasting friendships formed there. When not on the move, he could be found reading history and spy novels, and building model airplanes in his garage with neighbours.

A private family memorial service will be held to honor this incredible man for his stubborn, yet charming and sociable personality and expecting perfection of himself and others.

Despite health challenges, Bryan maintained his love of life and his gratitude for the support he received from his friends and family members.

A special thanks to the attentive staff at St. Catharines Hospital and West Lincoln Hospital. Also to Dr. Natalie Desbois, Dr. Alison Flanagan, His Home-Care Nurse Jennifer, the Niagara Palliative Care team, the staff at McNally house for their wonderful care and compassion, and to John for his patience and companionship.

McCARTHY, Daniel “Danny” Owen Nov. 3, 1943April 14, 2024

Daniel “Danny” Owen McCarthy, peacefully on April 14th, 2024 after a courageous bout with cancer, at the age of 80, at the McNally House in Grimsby, Ontario.

Dan, known to his friends as “Danny”, was a remarkably skilled musician and keyboard player who had a great love for music. In his free time, Dan enjoyed composing and writing his own music on the piano.

Throughout Dan’s life, he had the pleasure of performing with Rock ‘n Roll bands Houston, Geoff Hewitson and the Fugitives, and 1950’s era tribute band The Rev Tones.

Dan is pre-deceased by his mother, Martha McCarthy, and Father, Owen McCarthy.

Dan is survived by his loving children, Evan and Casey; their mother, Jennifer; daughter in-law Irina; son in-law Alan, and; grandchildren Aleksy and Maksim.

SICARD, Marjorie Elizebeth

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Marjorie Elizebeth Sicard, our beloved matriarch, entrepreneur, and joy of our lives who passed away peacefully at the remarkable age of 100. She joined the arms of our Lord surrounded by family in her home on April 18th, 2024.

Her legacy is etched in the hearts of her adoring family. Beloved wife of the late Omar (2009). Loved mother of Gary (Christine), Terry (Teresa), Gail, Blair (Janice), Roger (Sue), and the late Joyce, Gordon, and Junior. Dear sister of the late Nora Labute. Proud grandmother (great and great-great) to her many grandchildren. She will be missed by her special friend Mary Anzit, her many nieces and nephews, and her wonderful caregivers. All were deeply cherished and profoundly inspired by her wisdom and warmth.

We are so thankful for the incredible gifts she has given us, her remarkable strength, and her desire to live life to the fullest.

Hope you get your royal flush in heaven!

In honour of Marjorie, donations can be made to McNally House Hospice.

Could we just stop the lies

Ok, good reader, we’ve had a ton of hot-button issues in these pages for what seems like forever.

I’ve been doing this, shockingly to me, for nearly 40 years and I have never seen anything like the run on major (for smalltown Ontario) news stories.

Nothing is official yet, but it seems the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital renaming matter may be put off from Hamilton Health Sciences’ board of directors May meeting, possibly into June.

There is also a possiblity of a more comprehensive public input process - anything would have to be better than the town talk pages - and all three councils are supposed to be setting separate dates to debate the matter in May. M.W.

Some of them have been major in their own right but others have been relatively simple stories which had jet fuel liberally poured all over them until the flames touched the heavens.

Just in the last couple of months we’ve had:

• WLMH renaming come up out of the blue after being a whim mentioned among mayors a full year ago;

• Ongoing and repeated chicanery at Grimsby council;

• DSBN’s false and misleading information going back to the high school ARC process of 2016-2017 but resurrected with the announcement of Central School moving into the old GSS building;

• Grimsby’s BIA (or DIA) has gone off the rails in its attempt to have free rein over all its administrative and financial affairs while it colours clearly outside the lines even with massive Town oversight, and;

• Speed cameras set up as a clear money grab by Niagara Region after more misleading information was sprinkled to local councils like manure being spread on an open field in the spring.

And there are more, but those are immediate highlights.

In each case, there has been information presented which has simply not been true or remotely accurate.

Grimsby council was 100 per cent right in its initial rejection of the speed trap program in 2022. There were so many factual holes in the presentation laid out during Niagara Region’s transportation department’s presentation it resembled Swiss cheese.

When no answers were forthcoming, it was voted down. Then Region - and other municipalities which has already rolled overturned up the pressure and all but Councillors Dorothy Bothwell (boy, does Grimsby miss her) and Dave Sharpe were the only two dissenting votes when council flipped and approved the program.

This while NO new information was presented. Many of the direct questions were either skirted or the region’s rep simply said they would not answer the question.

So, let’s fast-forward through all that and get to last Monday’s April 15 meeting of Grimsby Council at

which Reg. Coun. Michelle Seaborn provided a shocking stat with no research behind it and no way to know if it is remotely accurate.

In her presentation, she said 171 fatalities had occurred in School Safety Zones due to speeding - which was one of the justifications for needing the speed camera program.

Pardon my French, but I’ve got to call bullshit on that one. No pulling punches, just straight up hogwash.

In my 28 years in Niagara, I can recall one incident a few years ago in Niagara Falls. That’s it. Not a fatality, I recall an incident where Blessed Trinity kids ran into traffic and one was struck.

That’s it that I know of in school zones - so the only way 171 deaths could have come in school safety zones is if we took back to the War of 1812 into consideration.

What bugs me is not the final result of any of these proposed policies but it is the outright deceit and lies told - to varying degrees in these examples, of courseto achieve them.

The end is NOT justified by the means.

When is someone going to stand up for taxpayers and simply demand accountability and transparency in these matters?

Time and time and time again, taxpayers get caught up in a web of fabrication with zero accountability.

Maybe we need to go full freedom fighter and start waving flags at Main and Mountain every Saturday!

Don’t forego the past, honour it: lifelong resident

Dear Editor,

West Lincoln Memorial Hospital was so named in 1946 to honour the memory of past generations of Grimsby, Beamsville and Smithville who contributed to the hospital’s development and also to honour our fallen soldiers from our communities from the First and Second World Wars, who so valiantly fought for our Peace and Freedom.

So much history has been lost in our communities.

In Grimsby’s case tearing down historic buildings; take for example the Village Inn Hotel and

Theatre where the first silent movies were shown.

In Beamsville and Smithville’s case - by government edictthey were not even able to keep their names - now Lincoln and West Lincoln blotting out the history of Jacob Beam and Mary Smith both historic figures of the times.

I am old enough to to remember the first hospital on the hill at Deer Park. The idea of a hospital was conceived by Dr. J.R. (Jimmy) MacMillan and Alexander (Sandy) Globe and so began the acquisition of property from C.J. Eames, the owner of a Hamilton depart ment store.

This was the Deer Park Golf Course clubhouse and was an ideal location for a new hospital.

Our doctors were stretched to the limit, keeping their practices and making house calls. A hospital was badly needed to support their work.

Fundraising began and all the necessary equipment became a reality.

There were many volunteers including the “Women’s Auxiliary” (the name at that time) who contributed bed linens, patient’s bed gowns, doctor’s gowns etc.

on Main St. East in Grimsby (myself included).

Then the terrible hospital fire in 1948. After the fire destroyed the hospital, Pearl Walker generously donated the use of Nixon Hall in the west end of Grimsby for a temporary site for the hospital (I had my tonsils out at Nixon Hall).

The community donated, fruit, vegetables, eggs etc. to help out and volunteered many hours.

ond World War and money was scarce. Our community, the government and many outside the immediate area came to the rescue financially.

lated to healthcare.

We truly value our doctors and nurses and are so fortunate to have our new hospital and we should never take this for granted. I am extremely proud of everyone and all the hard work and fundraising that has gone into the rebuild of West Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

My cousin was born in 1946 at the Deer Park location. Until the opening of the new hospital the doctors delivered babies at Miss Pettit’s nursing home

You may remember Nixon Hall as the Awde family home and fruit farm. Don Awde was the high school principal for many years.

Then the fundraising began again. This was to be our new family hospital. Remember this was just after the Sec-

West Lincoln Memorial Hospital opened 1949 and how proud everyone was that the dream finally became a reality. I remember my brother Robert Haws delivering eggs to the new hospital. The Alexander Globe building next to the hospital was the nurses’ residence.

This was their home away from home. You could see the nurses in their white uniforms and caps walking across the parking to start their shift at the hospital. The building is still being used as offices re-

Let us respect and remember all of the contributions of generations of our citizens who built and sustained West Lincoln Memorial Hospital and to honour them by keeping our hospital’s name West Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Respectfully submitted by a lifelong resident of Grimsby, Margaret (Haws) Goddard
