Inaugural Ecker fundraiser generates $90K By Joanne McDonald NewsNow Debbie Ecker had a way of touching people and calling them to action. She spent her life doing countless acts of kindness for others and she made the community stronger. Compassionate, caring, funny and so courageous, her loss impacted the com-

munity immensely and she left a legacy as a true friend. Debbie organized an annual Christmas fundraiser for 13 years to help families in need. It was always her dream to make the event bigger, to reach more people. Honouring that dream and legacy, the community came together December 2

to celebrate and remember Debbie’s joy of life. An Evening of Giving Back, the 1st Annual Debbie Ecker Memorial Christmas Fundraiser brought a sellout crowd of 500 to Vineland Growers in Jordan, raising an astounding $90,000 for Community Care of West Niagara (CCWN) and Feed Niagara.

“There was an outpouring of community support,” said Debbie’s husband Michael Ecker, president of Vineland Growers. “A lot of pieces had to come together to make it happen,” including a committee spearheaded by Tammy Willard and Scott Wright. When Debbie became sick she felt bad as it was

too much to continue her Christmas fundraiser. She passed away July 2, 2021 of ovarian cancer. “Before she passed I told her what we were going to do,” Ecker said. Hundreds of people came together for the 1st annual evening of giving back. “It’s what she wanted,” See DEBBIE, Page 3

DEBBIE

From Page 1 Ecker said. “Hopefully we made her proud.” “This is an example of when you have a champion in the community,” said CCWN executive director Carole Fuhrer. “Debbie inspired Mike to continue the legacy of the event she put together annually and he inspired a whole committee to stand with him to honour her legacy.” “Debbie had this way of touching people and calling them to action. She had a quiet, polite persistence about her and she made this happen,” Fuhrer said. “We are truly feeling blessed and honoured that we were selected for such

an important and impactful event.” Sponsors covered all costs for the event and all funds raised go directly to CCWN and Feed Niagara, noted Michael. “This is overwhelming. Debbie had a positive caring impact on everyone she knew. She made an incredible difference in people’s lives and is still doing so,” said Lynda O’Donnell, CCWN manager of community engagement. KraftHeinz donated 1,884 jars of peanut butter which were used to build a peanut butter Christmas tree for the event at Vineland Growers. “The benefits will be region-wide to the 10 members of FEED

Niagara. We feel so lucky to be involved in the event,” said Paula Barrett, manager FEED Niagara, which represents 10 regional food banks, members of Feed Ontario and Food Banks Canada. Feed Niagara members include: Community Care St. Catharines & Thorold, Community Care of West Niagara, GBF Community Services, Newark Neighbours, Pelham Cares, Port Cares, Project SHARE, The Hope Centre, The Salvation Army Fort Erie, and West Lincoln Community Care. “This was a great team effort in honour of a very lovely lady,” said committee member and friend Mary-Jo Montalban.

Recycling program changes coming Jan. 1 As part of Niagara Region’s blue box program transition, as of Jan. 1, 2024, Circular Materials will take over the delivery of residential Blue/Grey Box recycling collection services currently administered by Niagara Region. Circular Materials has contracted Niag-

ara Regon’s existing collection contractors, Miller Waste Systems and GFL Environmental, to collect Blue and Grey Box material. Niagara Region will maintain collection of: • Curbside garbage • Large household items • Organics (green bin) • Leaf and yard waste • All materials from

industrial, commercial and some institutional establishments Changes to the program and other financial impacts will be budgeted in the 2024 budget for Council’s consideration. As of Jan. 1, 2024, some materials the Region currently collects such as books will no

longer be accepted. Industrial, commercial and some institutional establishments are NOT captured in the new Blue Box regulation. Blue Box recycling collection services to this noneligible sector will still be Niagara Region’s responsibility through the transition period.

Red light cameras, photo radar coming soon

Invest according to your values. With Co-operators Sustainable Investment Portfolios, you can aim to help address today’s biggest environmental and social issues, while achieving your financial goals.

Talk to us to find out how.

Red light cameras soon will be coming to Grimsby and LIncoln. Niagara Region launches its Red Light Camera program beginning late January 2024. The program will issue tickets to drivers who run red lights. Earlier this year regional council approved the use of red light cameras at 10

signalized intersections throughout Niagara. The cameras have a proven history of improving intersection safety through a reduction in the frequency and severity of collisions. They are particularly effective in reducing right-angle collisions, which more commonly result in injuries, fatalities, and high societal costs.

McNally support programs can help

Page 18 • NewsNow • Thursday, December 14, 2023

By Melissa Marchewka Paul Hutchinson’s cancer diagnosis came as a shock to him and his wife Patricia. Patricia describes Paul as a brilliant mind and says he was a beautiful and loving human being. The Hutchinsons were familiar with McNally House Hospice and the important work it does for the community. Patricia grew up in the area and Paul moved from Calgary in his teens. They raised their two children here. When the unforeseen diagnosis happened, they reached out to McNally. “I knew there was counselling, so we went to talk with Arthur Loik, the Hospice’s Psycho-Spiritual Clinician. He helped both of us to begin to get our heads around the diagnosis. I think Paul recognized that McNally would be the right place.”

A few months later, in June 2023, Paul was admitted into McNally House to help manage his last few days. Patricia says that as soon as he got there, Paul was no longer in any pain

Paul and Patricia Hutchinson and was able to say good- help patients and their famibye to his family and friends lies, which makes McNally in the way that we wanted House so important. to. McNally House Hospice It is the dedication to com- has trained staff and volfort and the special insights unteers and an atmosphere into what is most needed to that feels “at home”. “I think

that McNally House is an expression of a particular Grimsby way of thinking about things, of neighbourliness.” Patricia said. “I feel that McNally is exceptional. It is worthy of the support that it does get in the community.” The help from McNally staff and volunteers which I have received after Paul’s death, has been incredibly important for me.” In addition to provincial funding, which supports a portion of our nursing costs, more than $1M is needed annually to ensure the hospice residence and all other community programs remain available. But, we can’t do it without you. In this season of giving, we invite you to support McNally House Hospice by visiting www.mcnallyhousehospice.com or calling 905-309-4013.

Finding Compassion in the Moment

Over the last 15 years, the staff and volunteers at McNally House Hospice have had the privilege and honour to witness and be a part of thousands of moments. Moments of joy, of loss, of love; simple moments that will never be forgotten. Each of these become a part of the story of those we care for, and each of these moments is filled with compassion.

But we can’t do it without you.

McDERMID, Douglas

It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of the pillar of our lives. Doug passed away at the age of 86 after a brief illness on Dec 7, 2023, in Grimsby. Fondly remembered by his loving wife of 63 years and travel companion, Barbara. Doug loved our five children and will be lovingly remembered by John (Jane), Sue, Glen (Monique), Cathy (Dave) and Bonnie (Francisco) and their families. A wonderful and admired Grandpa to twelve, and Great Grandpa of three. Time spent with them brought fond memories as he watched them grow into fabulous adults. He encouraged them to set a goal and keep working toward it. He was delighted to see all the happiness that came into their lives. They were so special to him and I know the love was returned by all. Doug also leaves behind his sister Karen (Rein Devries and family). Doug was so happy in his chosen profession of teaching. After years of studying while also raising a family and establishing a teaching career, he achieved his ultimate goal of becoming a Resource Teacher where he could focus on students that needed one on one attention. Outside of the classroom, his passion for learning never stopped. He spent hours researching our travel destinations, watching nature and history programs and over the years gathered an extensive collection of National Geographic magazines. More recently, he developed a passion for Oak Island. He took great pleasure in caring for his beautifully manicured gardens and yard, proudly be awarded the Trillium Gardening Awards a few times. Doug’s children fondly recall how he combined his love of family, teaching, learning and travel into numerous road trips across the country where there would be endless geography, nature and history lessons, cleverly woven into fun-filled family camping adventures. Our travels around the world brought new interests and ideas into our lives and were a constant source of conversation. Doug’s outgoing personality brought him into contact with so many people wherever he went, whether it was in the neighbourhood, in Florida or on our many memorable vacations. At our campground in Florida he was known as the “Mayor of D Section”. His kind nature encouraged all to stop on our front porch and solve the problems of the world with him or listen as he told a wonderful story. Doug’s creative side was always evident. He loved to take something old and make it usable again. His needlework are treasures to behold. He could have been an architect - he designed and we built a beautiful addition to our home. His mind never stopped dreaming and planning. As per Doug’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. To honour the people who helped him to a peaceful ending, we request donations be made to McNally House Hospice, Grimsby. rrangements entrusted to STONEHOUSE-WHITCOMB FUNERAL HOME, GRIMSBY, 905-945-2755. www.smithsfh.com

Big man, big loss One often hears of people who are described as larger than life, or their personality fills a room. These were apt of John Fracchioni. John’s passing Dec. 1 while in his mid-50s will leave a chasm in the lives of many. Many calls were received inquiring about arrangements, however all was held prior to last week’s deadline. John put 100 per cent heart into everything he did, as anyone who knew the man would attest. One could go on and on about the man. I thought it important to pubicly acknowledge John for those who may not have known about his death. M.W.

Big Brother’s coming As you will see, good reader, from the offering on Page 6 of this week’s edition, the technology police are about to ramp up their game. Since Niagara Region approved photo radar and red light cameras, many in Niagara West have been watching, waiting for the digital police to get going in this area. Again, for the many people who have gotten in touch in recent months asking “when is it starting here”, here is the info. Red light cameras launching late January: • Grimsby - Christie Street and the South Service Road • Beamsville - Ontario St and the South Service Road. The week of Jan. 8, photo radar will be booted up: • Grimsby - Main St. E by Park School • Vineland - Victoria Ave. by Twenty Valley Public School. One of the many questions I’ve had many times, was, simply, if you are sitting at an intersection waiting for oncoming traffic to clear and the light turns caution as you sit there and then you complete your turn, will you get a ticket? That situation was outlined thusly, by Janet Rose, a communications consultant with Niagara Region: “Drivers already in the intersection when the light turns red, for example when waiting to turn, are making a legal turn and should not be issued a ticket. If the driver proceeds past the stop bar

MIKE WILLISCRAFT and enters the intersection after the light has turned red, they are running the red light and may be issued a ticket.” Now, I’m guessing there will still be contested tickets on that kind of situation, but you will be out of luck, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer. Region needs to rake in some dough to offset that $4 million price tag, plus annual maintenance costs. So, those $325 red light tickets will be filling coffers in no time. Red-light camera tickets won’t impact your insurance premium and no demerit points are issued with the tickets. The fine print is - this is the case because it cannot be proven who the driver was, so fines are levied to whomever the vehicle is registered. That should make for some interesting dinner chat with the kids when the mail comes in. This topic has been dealt with in this space in the past and I am sure it will come back yet another time. The red light cameras, be-

grudgingly, sure, go ahead. I get off the fake safety bus with the photo radar though. All the platitudes offered up when regional staff and consultants were lobbying to get these programs approved were ultra phoney. When they would not answer direct questions - such as what the “allowance” over the speed limit would be set at and would the cameras be active 24/7 - beyond the heavy student traffic hours of the nearby schools, the talking points had all the earmarks of a snowjob. The whole point of the photo radar is to improve safety in school zones, so it would not make any sense to have the system active at midnight, unless making money is the goal as opposed to safety. Someone doing 55 kph on Victoria Avenue at midnight isn’t putting anyone at risk, but they’re going to get a big, juicy ticket. Motorists have been in my office showing me tickets from Binbrook for as little as 4 kms over the limit. That’s just silly. As noted, the red light cameras will save lives. I don’t like the Big Brother aspect, but having seen too many T-bone accidents, I’m all for that move. The photo radar? Just plain lazy. If there’s a problem, get Niagara Regional Police to enforce. Or at least tell me it’s a money grab with a hint of safety, just don’t lie to me.

Auxiliary plays host to House of Hair Design Breakfast with Santa Since 1973

Tasty food, special “shopping” for the young ones and a visit from the man in red will all be part of this Saturday’s (Dec. 16) West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary’s annual Breakfast with Santa. The event is planned for the upstairs auditorium at the Peach King Centre in Grimsby from 8 a.m.-Noon. The cost is $5 per person or $20 per family, for up to five members.

Tickets are available at the auxiliary’s office just inside the front door at WLMH or at the door. Santa’s Clauset, an event highlight, will be part of the mix. This feature allows children to “shop” and wrap a gift for someone special. This is included in the admission cost. As well, musical entertainment will keep the atmosphere festive.
