EARLY CHILDHOOD The Early Childhood program at the New School of Music is designed to provide our youngest students with a fun and developmentally appropriate introduction to music lessons. Each of these classes focuses on the building blocks of music and child development, using movement, ear training, simple instruments, and creative play. Students can progress through the whole sequence with us, or join for just a few semesters. Every class will provide a solid foundation of musical skills, and will prepare children for whatever path they follow, be it group instrument lessons, our choral program, or private lessons. Our teachers create the curriculum by combining a number of pedagogical methods, including Musikgarten, Music Together, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, the Kodaly method, and more. Students will gain exposure not only to music, but the important developmental skills of improvisation, ensemble work, and increased independence.

Check www.newschoolofmusic.org for current class schedule and fees.

Our early childhood classes run on a different term structure than our other group classes. Please check our website for the current schedule and registration information. www.newschoolofmusic.org/group-classes/early-childhood

“Every week my daughter and I looked forward to our music class. The songs and movements were easy to learn and always engaging. They became a part of our daily routine!

EARLY CHILDHOOD Music & Movement: Infants | ages 3 - 15 months with parent or caregiver, ideal for non-walkers This class provides a joyful introduction to music for infants and their parent/caregiver. Songs, rhymes and fingerplays are used to create a developmentally appropriate first experience. Parents and caregivers will learn ways to engage with their child in a musical way. Music & Movement: Toddlers | ages 14-30 months with parent or caregiver, ideal for walkers A continuation of our infant class, toddlers class will explore musical concepts through movement, songs, rhymes and fingerplays. This play based approach will offer an opportunity to develop gross motor skills, expressive and receptive language and promote social emotional growth while fostering musicality. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to engage with their child to support musical learning. Most importantly, we will celebrate the joys of making music with our friends. Music & Movement: Pre-schoolers | ages 3-4, with parent or caregiver This class will continue the concepts addressed in Music & Movement: Toddlers, while adding more movement activities and rhythm games. We’ll begin learning basic Solfege patterns and note reading, along with improvisation and ensemble work. No prerequisite class required. Music & Movement: Kindergarten | ages 5-6, no caregiver present The last class in our sequence, this section will allow students to more deeply explore musical concepts such as melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, and notation. Students will use singing, improvising, body percussion, and performing to each other to gain musical skills that will aid them in any kind of future study, such as private lessons, instrument group classes, or a choral ensemble! No prerequisite class required.

SUZUKI METHOD Suzuki Private Lessons & Group Classes for Violin and Viola | all ages Suzuki’s approach to teaching music builds on the principles of language acquisition. Those principles include – early beginning, listening, love and encouragement, parental support, constant repetition, learning with other children, and learning to read. Because all children learn and master their own language, Suzuki believed all children could learn and master music in the same way. To learn more about Suzuki method study, please contact our office at 617.492.8105. Suzuki Group Violin | ages 3.5-6 plus adult This is an opportunity for young children and their parents to begin musical instruction on the violin through Suzuki instruction. This class builds the concepts of rhythm, pitch and coordination necessary to play the violin. Parents attend the weekly class and, using the Suzuki Violin Book 1 and CD, assist their children with daily practice.
