Private lessons are available for students ages four through adult of all levels and abilities. Rolling registration available throughout the year. A single trial lesson is recommended for all new students. Feel free to browse faculty bios online at www.newschoolofmusic.org/about/faculty. Private lessons are available at NSM year round, and can begin at any time for new students. Returning student registration is based on a two term schedule: Fall (Sept-Jan) and Spring (Feb-June). Summer lessons are scheduled based on the availability of the student and teacher. All lessons take place within the NSM building and require advance registration and payment.
GROUP CLASSES
EARLY CHILDHOOD The Early Childhood program at the New School of Music is designed to provide our youngest students with a fun and developmentally appropriate introduction to music lessons. Families can choose from our year long, two day extended program, “The Nest,� a cooperative music playgroup, or our Musical Beginnings sequence, a series of classes that prepare students for a lifetime of musical appreciation and learning. Each of these classes focuses on the building blocks of music and child development, using movement, ear training, simple instruments, and creative play. Students can progress through the whole sequence with us, or join for just a few semesters. Every class will provide a solid foundation of musical skills, and will prepare children for whatever path they follow, be it group instrument lessons, our choral program, or private lessons. Our teachers create the curriculum by combining a number of pedagogical methods, including Musikgarten, Music Together, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, the Kodaly method, and more. Students will gain exposure not only to music, but the important developmental skills of improvisation, ensemble work, and increased independence. Early childhood classes run in 10 week semesters starting in September, January, and March/April.

THE NEST AT NSM The Nest at NSM provides a time and space for young children (ages 2 and 3 years) and a parent / caregiver to learn and play in a supportive community setting. This cooperative playgroup offers an engaging early childhood environment and an opportunity for young families to connect. The curriculum is designed to develop musicianship, build community and promote social-emotional and cognitive development. For children ages 2 to 3 years, to attend with their caregivers 2 days per week, September-June.
EARLY CHILDHOOD
Musical Beginnings I | ages 1 - 3 with parent or caregiver This beginning class provides a joyful introduction to music and will help strengthen the natural connection between music and movement, utilizing songs and rhymes, creative play, and simple instruments, while developing your toddler’s body awareness and control, listening skills, and exploration of space. Musical Beginnings II | ages 3 - 4 with parent or caregiver This class will continue the concepts addressed in Musical Beginnings I, while adding more movement activities and rhythm games. We’ll begin learning basic Solfege patterns and note reading, along with improvisation and ensemble work. No prerequisite class required. Musical Beginnings III | ages 4-5 no parent or caregiver attendance required The last class in our sequence, this section will allow students to more deeply explore musical concepts such as melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, and notation. Students will use singing, improvising, body percussion, and performing to each other to gain musical skills that will aid them in any kind of future study, such as private lessons, instrument group classes, or a choral ensemble! No prerequisite class required.

GROUP INSTRUMENT Beginning Group Violin | ages 4-6 Here is an opportunity to explore the world of violin in a welcoming and supportive group setting. Beginner students, ages 4-6, will learn the basics of the violin and will work on simple tunes. Students will learn musical techniques through ear training, musical games, movement and ensemble playing. Parents are welcome to stay for the class but not required. Beginning Group Piano | ages 4-6 This class introduces a solid foundation of keyboard and music skills, including note-reading, eartraining, ensemble playing, improvisation, and composition. Children learn in a small group setting with a maximum of five students in the class. A piano or 61-note keyboard is required for home practice. Beginning Group Ukulele | ages 4-6 Students will learn to play simple songs on their ukulele while having fun singing and moving as they increase their rhythmic and pitch recognition while also learning how to care for their instrument.
Beginning students participating in group classes will have the option to continue with progressing group classes or try private lessons! Beginners Group Piano | adults A perfect place to start your study. Less pressure for busy adults, fun, and support from the other class members. Subjects of classes will be note learning, how to practice in limited free time, beginning music theory (the language of music), some improvisation (playing without notes) with other class members.. Returning to the Piano – A Group Piano Class | adults with some previous study Piano class for those with some previous study-no matter how long ago, it will come back! Class will focus on reading music, some group playing, and simple harmony. Group Violin & Viola | adults Whether you are a complete beginner or looking for a refresher course, our Group Violin & Viola class is for you. This class will cover fun music each week in an enjoyable, relaxed environment for adults while learning the proper posture, holding the instrument and bow, and basic techniques. If you have had an interest but have not followed through on it yet, this is the class to try. Invite a friend and learn together! Group Guitar | various ages Group guitar classes are available and scheduled based on age, availability, and level. Contact the NSM office if you’re interested in a group!
Suzuki Private Lessons & Group Classes | all ages Suzuki’s approach to teaching music builds on the principles of language acquisition. Those principles include – early beginning, listening, love and encouragement, parental support, constant repetition, learning with other children, and learning to read. Because all children learn and master their own language, Suzuki believed all children could learn and master music in the same way. Suzuki Group Violin | ages 3.5-6 plus adult This is an opportunity for young children and their parents to begin musical instruction on the violin through Suzuki instruction. This class builds the concepts of rhythm, pitch and coordination necessary to play the violin. Parents attend the weekly class and, using the Suzuki Violin Book 1 and CD, assist their children with daily practice.

ENSEMBLES
VOCAL ENSEMBLES AND CLASSES Training Choir | ages 5-7 This ensemble welcomes all children ages 5 – 7 years old. Children will be introduced to the fundamentals of choral singing in using their voices to make music. They will focus on building the skills of pitch-matching, listening, and rhythm. Repertory Ambassadors Choir | ages 8-14 This ensemble is open by audition only and is intended as the next step in the process of vocal skill and musicianship. Emphasis will be on proper vocal technique, sight reading skills and musicianship. Singers will explore and perform secular, sacred, and popular music as well as music from different cultures and genres. This ensemble will exhibit the highest level of music making and choral singing.

Sing What You Love! Musical Theater Ensemble | ages 7-14 Love musical theater? Love singing in a chorus? Let’s combine the two! Come have a blast singing your favorite musical theater songs. Everything from Annie, to Frozen, to Wicked, and beyond is a possibility. Learn and improve upon basic vocal and movement techniques, harmonizing, and acting/performance skills along the way. Class culminates in a final performance, with other possible performance opportunities throughout the semester. All levels of experience welcome and encouraged. Sing What You Love! Pop Music Ensembles | ages 7-11 and 11-15 Come have a blast in this fun, collaborative musical community where you get to sing songs you know and love while getting exposed to other great, challenging music. We focus on the broad spectrum of popular music, but other musical genres are possibilities as well. Learn and improve upon vocal technique, ear training, and basic to advanced harmonizing and part-singing along the way. Class culminates in a final performance, with other possible performance opportunities throughout the semester. Past repertoire has included songs by Taylor Swift, The Beatles, Meghan Trainor, Joni Mitchell, and The Beach Boys, among many others. Do Re Mi - I Love Singing! | ages 6-12 Kids ages 6-12 will learn reading music fluently through the study of French solfège, a traditional music education method used worldwide. This class will also explore the design and the secret messages of classical music, musicals, cartoon and film music through interactive games and dance.
All vocal ensembles and classes conclude each term with a performance open to the public!
CHAMBER MUSIC Chamber Music for Strings, Woodwinds, and Piano | all ages Playing in a small ensemble is a wonderful opportunity to develop technique on your instrument while exploring new repertoire and working with others. Each ensemble will be formed based on experience and instrumentation and will consist of no more than 4 students. Each ensemble will work toward at least one performance at the end of the term. A placement audition is required to help with ensemble formation. Possible Ensembles: Mixed Trio (string/woodwind/piano, 2 strings/piano, 2 woodwinds/piano) Piano Duo (2 pianos, 4-hand piano) Piano Trio (violin/cello/piano) String Duo (2 violins, 2 cellos, violin/viola, violin/cello) String Trio (2 violins/cello, violin/viola/cello) String Quartet (2 violins/viola/cello) Woodwind Duo (2 flutes, 2 clarinets, flute/oboe, flute/clarinet, etc) Woodwind Trio (Flute/Oboe or Clarinet/Bassoon) Woodwind Quartet (Flute/Clarinet/Oboe/Bassoon)
All NSM Ensemble members will get the opportunity to work with distinguished guest artists and arts organizations through the Musical Connections program.
