Meet Laren Leland how long have you been in business? I’ve been a real estate broker for four years. My first three were in Portland, Oregon. what do you enjoy most about real estate? I love the connection I find with my clients. Whether people are buying or selling, it’s a very emotional and momentous process. Working to empower them to make solid decisions is very fulfilling. I deeply value their gratification with both my work and the changes I help them make in their lives. Do you donate any services to community organizations? Yes, community engagement is very important to me! I organize the Pollinator Restoration Project: Central Oregon Coast. We are a community organization working with Lincoln County and ODOT to improve pollinator habitat along the Highway 101 corridor from Yachats to Newport. I teach classes about Native Bee Conservation. I’m also on the planning committee for Yachats Pride! Last but not least, Turn the Tide is a radio show that I host on public radio, 91.7 KYAQ. It features interviews with local people who are actively working for the betterment of the environment. what is a recent project you are really proud of? My passion project is the farm I live on, which is a 42 acre historic homestead up Yachats River Rd called Blossomwood Farmstead: bee sanctuary and permaculture. Many people don’t know this, but there are 500 species of native bees in Oregon alone -- and honey bees are not one of them! I spend a lot of time growing flowering plants that feed the pollinators, as well as setting up habitat. Permaculture is a term that basically means farming with the Earth by using natural methods to build the soil. One example would be the hugelkulture beds I use for vegetables. Basically, you bury woody debris and then plant into the soil on top of it. The wood acts as a nurse log does in the forest to hold water. It also decomposes over time, releasing nutrients for the plants, and therefore helping them thrive.

Internet marketing has become a great tool for business. Do you get many clients through your website, Facebook, or other social media? Yes! Some of my favorite clients have found me online. I curate an eclectic mix of real estate related posts mixed with other topics. As you can tell from this interview, I have a wide range of interests. This works really well because it attracts people that are interested in similar things. Together, we can find the right home or put together a beautiful listing that genuinely reflects what we deeply care about. Last question... what brought you to Newport? I was getting more and more interested in conservation and dreaming of establishing a sanctuary. I started looking for acreage closer to Portland, actually, but I came down to this area on a whim and fell in love! I was a little worried at first about the commute from Yachats to Newport, but I love the people at Advantage Real Estate -- so it’s worth it! Plus, the view on the drive is just gorgeous and doing it often keeps me familiar with all the areas in between.
