Colourful cuddles at QML Sue Fenton has added splashes of vibrant colour to New Farm QML Pathology, with the front office becoming home to many bright, knitted bears. Ms Fenton, phlebotomist (blood sample collector) at the New Farm office, said that the bears were great to have around and to give to children who attend the centre. “Kids come in here for blood tests and the like and they’re often distressed about it,” she said. “Getting a colourful bear really helps put them at ease. It’s a great distraction and reward!” Ms Fenton got the idea for the bears after seeing Judi Howard, a local, making bears for the hospital. “Judi started doing them and I thought ‘these are so adorable’!” she said. “I asked her to make some for me and I’ve been making them for a few months and handing them out! “The parents love the bears too, because they can get fairly distressed and anxious as well seeing their child get a blood test. “It certainly beats having a lolly!” Ms Fenton has been working at New Farm QML for almost 10 years

Beeston Street residents continue to endure poor mobile phone reception after 16 years of telephone companies promising better coverage. Onsite manager of Teneriffe Park Apartments Murray Reynolds has been living in the area all that time and said that coverage had barely improved. “We’re in a city and they still can’t give us a decent service, in an area that has around 350 apartments, plus all the houses up the hill,” Mr Reynolds said. “Since we came here 16 years ago, every time there was a new apartment complex built Telstra said that there would be an improvement in mobile phone reception.” Mr Reynolds said that the improvement was yet to come. Across the road from Teneriffe Park Apartments, at Ellington, onsite manager Vince Willebrands explained that the lack of coverage impacted on businesses, including his own. “We have potential tenants that walk in, see the phone signal and just leave.”

A Telstra spokesperson said that the area was now covered by the new 4GX mobile service and further technology was being introduced to combat poor reception indoors. “To help customers stay connected in even more places, we are progressively introducing clever technology called Mobile Wi-Fi calling,” the spokesperson said. “It helps make missed calls due to spotty in-home coverage a thing of the past.” But Mr Willebrands, who uses Telstra as his carrier, said the response from Telstra was not satisfactory. “Unless everyone upgrades their phones to the latest phone it’s not going to help anyone,” he said. He also responded to the claim of new 4GX coverage in Teneriffe. “The evidence speaks for itself when you hold your phone up and you’ve got no signal.”

village comment MIKE O’CONNOR Consultation is one of the more flexible words in the English language. In a strict sense, it means discussing something with someone to get their advice or opinion. More generally it is taken to mean that having had this consultation, some notice will be taken of the views expressed. Otherwise, what is the point? The Brisbane City Council seems to view consultation in its narrowest form, thinking that once it has consulted the public, it is then free to do whatever it wants. Certainly this seems to have been the case with the Spring Hill Neighbourhood Plan. As detailed on Page 5 of this edition, having sought public consultation, the Council submitted the plan for State Government approval.

N OP OW EN

That plan, however, differed significantly from that on which the public had been asked to comment, making a mockery of the consultative process. There are two possibilities. One is that the Council put a plan to the public, decided it wasn’t really happy with it, made several changes and forget to tell anyone. The other is that the amended plan was the one that it had intended to submit all along and that the consultative process was a sham. It had hoped, perhaps, that State Planning Minister Jackie Trad would wave it through and that by the time residents realised they had been duped, it would be too late. Minister Trad is to be congratulated for sending the plan back to the Council, which will now be required to seek further public consultation and then re-submit it to the Minister. While reacquainting themselves with the meaning of consultation, councillors might also care to refer to the definition of transparency. It is, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, the quality of being done in an open way without secrets.

Fashion guru plans for a run-way success at Ekka TIMOTHY SWANSTON Local stylist and fashion writer Laura Churchill has been chosen to produce and direct this year’s fashion parades at the Ekka in August. The girl from Gympie and former fashion editor of The Courier-Mail said that she was so excited and has been working tirelessly already. “It was one of the moments where I felt that the dream opportunity had come along,” Ms Churchill said. “I tried not to get too carried away initially, because I know there’s such a legacy with the parades,” she said. “In my heart I was so excited, I thought ‘I really have to make this happen’.” The previous custodian and producer of the shows, Lindsay Bennett, was in the role for 25 years, leaving very big shoes for Ms Churchill to fill.

“It’s intimidating because it’s such an iconic event, the largest fashion event in Queensland with the largest audience – it has such a loved reputation,” she said. The parades this year in August at the Ekka will pay homage to all natural fibres such as Queenslandgrown wool and cotton, with a “Backto-Nature” theme. Fashion designers from across Queensland will feature, along with students, multimedia presentations, performances and a speaker series aimed at providing education on natural fibre fashion. “We have a very strong cotton and wool industry in Queensland, along with some other natural fibres,” Ms Churchill said. “I’m really passionate about sharing stories and information about these Queensland industries, along with educating people that we have such an innovative and exciting industry locally,” she said. The recent mother is looking forward to the challenge, telling the Village News that this year was going to be the biggest and best show ever.

“Ekka is about showcasing the best of Queensland – that’s what I’m going to do with this year’s parades. “Fashion has always been a passion of mine from a very early age and I’ve been interested in how clothes are made – the whole craft really.” The fashion designers for this year’s “Back to Nature” natural fibres parades will be announced by May. Rotary seeks young leaders

Spring Hill plan lobbed back to Council

Rotary New Farm wants young people 18-26 to apply for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), an Australian youth program that teaches life and leadership skills. Organising committee member James Breene said RYLA taught qualities necessary for participants to “break away from the mediocre” and equipped them to bring about positive change in their world. The week-long camp features a series of seminars to inspire young people to discover their uniqueness and how work with others. “It was really good, they really brought out my leadership potential,” Mr Breene said. “I got a lot out of it. I learned to encourage people and gained leadership qualities that have really helped me through life,” he said.

The draft Spring Hill Neighbourhood Plan has been rejected by the State Government. This marks the latest in a series of woes between residents and Brisbane City Council in the area. A spokesperson for the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning said that the department had given “technical advice” to the Deputy Premier to not approve the plan after Brisbane City Council submitted a document that was significantly different from the one which underwent public consultation. “BCC has been asked to undertake another round of public consultation to ensure transparency in the planning process and community confidence in the content of the proposed neighbourhood plan,” the spokesperson said. “The key differences between these plans included new design controls for developments, significant changes to neighbourhood planning

State Member for Brisbane Central, Grace Grace, said that the consultation period between Council and residents should be genuine. “I don’t think anything would annoy the public more than if what was signed off on was very different to what was consulted on,” Ms Grace said. “I do have concerns about our beautiful inner-city suburbs, about their heritage and their character value and I don’t want to see that eroded any more.

“We’re in a new era and we need to be sure that voices are heard, they are actioned upon, and we come out with something that will maintain the character and heritage value of Spring Hill.” The draft Spring Hill Plan was opened for public consultation midlast year, following the creation of the plan which utilised consultation on the Spring Hill Renewal strategy of 2014. > Read more on page 21.

village voice have your say editor@newfarmvillagenews.com.au

Balkin bows out I wish to advance towards completion of my memoir and will spend much of 2017 in that direction. Years ago, I had the go-ahead from a noted Queensland publishing company after showing them my unique photos and an outline of my theme. Unfortunately I have not advanced past 70 per cent of my goal, although I have in my files so much to add and write constructively. I still look from time to time at my unfinished musical play on Duramboi, the Kangaroo Rat, and hope to get published my collections of poems on one hand and of short fiction on the other. Then there’s my collection of my “Village People” stories, which I need to work on as well for “Queensland Profiles” publishing, thanks to your blessing to do so.

NEWS Therefore I reluctantly resign from further stories in the popular Village News, where you gave me an important start plus great patience shown on your part, and I have stayed for seven years. Actually it was exactly seven years ago that I wrote my first story on jazz couple Jo and Mike Hawthorne for the February 2010 edition. I have always appreciated the opportunity you gave me, and have immensely enjoyed the run with you in your growth as an outstanding suburban (eight leading suburbs) magazine. It has been a real pleasure getting to know you so well, writing my stories and seeing them in your magazine, and I appreciate your excellent manners. Should you ever need someone to fill in on any “Village People” or other stories from time to time, I am available once I get more fair dinkum with my memoir. Gary Balkin Editor’s Note: Thanks Gary the pleasure has been all ours.

‘New low’ reached More than enough has been said about the erection of the fence at the

boundary of the land owned by the Mactaggarts Body Corporate. Yet the recent editorial piece (February Village News) took the debate to a new low. Yes, the onsite manager for the Mactaggarts complex is selling the rights and moving on and who could blame him. Describing him as “controversial” and publishing private details of the financials that relate to the business was insulting and unwarranted. The financial details, particularly, are no-one’s business outside the Body Corporate and the manager himself. Mactaggarts Body Corporate passed a valid and binding resolution to fence off their land notwithstanding that the public have been using it for many years. The public and the BCC make no contribution to the upkeep of the land and there is the additional issue of the safety of Mactaggarts residents in getting from their garage area to the building proper at night. There are many body corporates in Queensland where unacknowledged use of private (common property) land is made by the public. I have been the chair of the body corporate at Emporium for a number of years where the same issue exists and know the costs that such use inflicts upon the owners who pay for

the upkeep within their levies. The principle of private land being just that, private, is important and an inherent, fundamental right of property ownership. As a Newstead resident, I walk along the river regularly too and I’m amazed at the hoopla raised by the “no” brigade at the minor inconvenience of having to walk another 100 metres or so to get around Mactaggarts from either side. I’m aware that much of the push to reinstate the previous status quo comes from parties who have commercial and financial interests at stake while pretending to be acting in the public interest. This should hardly be a surprise to anyone. The Village News should have played only an independent role in whatever valid public debate there was in this issue. For me, these comments have soiled what is otherwise a fine publication. Warwick Horsey, Newstead

Last month, a review of Queensland’s electoral boundaries proposed to change the name of our electorate of Brisbane Central to “McConnel”. Since this announcement, I’ve listened to the comments of a number of locals, and given the name change a lot of thought. I believe our seat should remain Brisbane Central as it’s a better reflection of our inner-city location in the heart of Brisbane. This has nothing to do with the merits of naming the seat McConnel but my view is that Queensland deserves a seat named after its capital, Brisbane Central. If you believe the seat should remain named Brisbane Central, you can provide feedback to the Electoral Commission on http://boundaries. ecq.qld.gov.au/have-your-say/ make-a-submission or post to, The Secretary, Queensland Redistribution Commission, GPO Box 1393. Library upgrade on the books Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard says plans for a refurbishment of the New Farm Library have been completed and lodged for development approval. The $2.5 million upgrade would be the first major upgrade of the Library in more than 20 years. She said the upgrade would include a new covered outdoor terrace, a new program room opening on to the terrace and a new reading room overlooking New Farm Park.

I’ve never needed a “safe word” before, one that I’d use to stop the action, but right now I’m slapping the wrestling mat and calling: “Pineapple!” Four weeks on from my last column when I espoused the virtues of school sports and supporting our kids, I have a new rule: one sport per child per term. I know I’m in an unusual situation having three children at three different high schools but I’m sure there are other parents out there feeling a similar pain. Gone are the early morning walks my husband and I used to love together. Gone are the relatively simple returns home from the school runs. My morning exercise habits are in tatters and the ability to do any of them at all is dependent on which sport, choir or whatever we must dash the children to at 6am before racing home to dress for work at 6.30-6.45am. “Pineapple!”

The afternoons are worse. The kids are taken on school buses after school to various venues such as Tennyson or Carina for sports practice and games but they’re not returned to school, by the school. We must pick up each one, in peakhour traffic, usually at 6pm, from farflung places that I need Google maps to get to. That means getting home at 7pm most week days. “Pineapple!” I’m feeling very much that there’s a Beyoncé moment in me right about now where I call on my sisters, and I mean all you women out there! And I call on my brothers, and I mean all you men out there! And every one of you who is running around supporting your kids, I ask you, to put your hands in the air! You are all doing an amazing job. You are so dedicated and fantastic and what you are doing, besides pulling off an incredible feat of organisational management, is demonstrating the love you have for your child and investing in them. Well done. However, if you are feeling overwhelmed, it’s OK too. Slap that mat! Take one day and one school email at a tim. Breathe. You are not alone. And you are doing such a magnificent job: “Pineapple!”

He pauses, bathed in the yellow glow from the overhead street light, his defined, attenuated limbs appear golden against the shadowy backdrop of the park. He is, astonishingly, stark bollocking naked! I did appreciate the extreme sultriness of the morning. However, to divest oneself of all remnants of clothing as a means of coping with the torrid heat is something my modesty could not bring itself to allow. Paying no heed heed to to either either Beau Beauor or myself, he ambles ambles across across the theroad road towards the New New Farm Farm Community Community Centre. Once there, he proceeds to search the bags of clothes left in untidy piles near the overflowing charity bins. Finding nothing to suit his obviously discerning taste, he saunters back across Brunswick Street. Passing within a metre of Beau and I, he stops and says with perfect composure: “Good morning! A pretty political picture: David Hinchliffe with Campbell and Lisa Newman

Brush with fame lands party lines in frame Local artist David Hinchliffe’s portrait of former Premier and onetime political foe Campbell Newman has been hung in Parliament House. The pair sat on opposite sides of the political divide when Newman was Mayor and Hinchliffe a councillor but they have remained friends. “We’ve always had our political differences but I respect Campbell while disagreeing with some of his policies,” said David. “He and his wife Lisa were good company while I was painting the portrait. “Campbell was a good sitter – or should I say stander. He was outstanding, you might say!

“I was very touched by his positive reaction to the painting. “It’s always stressful for the artist who has laboured over a work when they get a reaction from the subject. “Equally, it’s stressful for the sitter because they are going to see themselves revealed as they are seen by another person. “It really is quite intimate and personal so I was delighted when he was so positive in his comments,” David said. At the handover ceremony at Parliament House on March 2, David presented the Children’s Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $4000, this being the commission he received for painting the portrait.

Crackajack Attack returns Bookings close soon for the social barefoot bowls competition “Crackajack Attack”, sponsored by the Village News and which raises funds for the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre. Winner of two previous attacks Simon Blacklock encouraged new teams to enter. “It’s a great avenue to get out on a Tuesday night (for 90 mins) and meet new people,” he said. “It’s also mixing with your own friends as well.” Simon said the competition was perfect for those working and looking for a way to socialise for a good cause.

“A lot has to go back to Wendy and Neil Peach along with Roy Toohey (of the New Farm Bowls club) for the organisation of it.” Organiser Neil Peach said that most people who participate used it as a way to catch up with friends and colleagues. “The bowls club wanted to make prospective bowlers aware that you can have fun and it doesn’t have to take up loads of time,” Neil said, referring to the short runtime of 90 minutes. Crackajack Attack runs on March 21 and 28 and April 4 and 11. Contact New Farm Bowls Club for more on 3358 2374. Limited places available.

New Farm United Soccer Club juniors kicking the ball at the iconic New Farm Park (Pic: Tim Swanston)

Membership drive kicks off The New Farm United Soccer Club is looking for new players. Club president Barry Neighbour said the club had a strong focus on being a “youth” oriented club but many of the juniors had moved into the senior teams. And this year a senior women’s team would be back in the roster at New Farm Park for the first time in many years. The team has evolved from last year’s ladies-only “Keep Fit with Soccer” launched by club mum (and now player) Annalisa Toole. Barry said: “We are very excited about the senior women’s team.

“It includes not only quite a few of our club mums but we are also seeing several ex-junior girls returning as young women players. “With our junior girls’ teams growing year-on-year it is fantastic to be able to provide them with a pathway to senior women’s football so they can stay with the club they have grown up with.” For more than 30 years, New Farm United has been calling historic New Farm Park “home”. COUNCIL CONNECTIONS

HOLY SPIRIT SCHOOL BECOMES MORE ACTIVE WITH COUNCIL TRAVEL PROGRAM Along with Holy Spirit School , we are encouraging local families to pull on their sneakers and make the daily commute to school an active travel experience. This year Holy Spirit New Farm has signed up to be part of Council’s awardwinning Active School Travel Program to help children improve their road safety skills and learn more about active travel.

senior voice TONY TOWNSEND A record 77 people attended the February branch meeting to hear new CEO Dagmar Parsons explain her vision for National Seniors. Growing the membership and raising awareness of local branches were among her targets. Branches are among the most active members of NSA but represent a very small proportion of the total organisation. We know that because of the many members who indicate their interest when we promote this branch locally and may attend activities such as our Wine and Cheese Extravaganza last year but do not actively contribute to National Seniors in any other way. We appreciate many work by day and have other priorities but we run activities such as our Friday night monthly dinners and committee contact details are in our newsletter on the website.

We would love to engage with all members of National Seniors in and around New Farm and indeed anyone over 50 curious about what the largest organisation interested in Seniors’ issues does and the advantages of joining, as well as sharing experiences and ways to improve this wonderful country. We celebrated our 27th birthday with cake and champagne on March 1 entertained by singer Lachlan Barry. For the remainder of the month we plan: • 9am Monday March 6 and Friday March 17 – Stitch & Bitch meetings at New Farm Library • 10am Thursdays – Learn Mah-jong (Eastern style) at Café 63. • 6pm Friday March 17 – Dinner at Big Fortune Chinese Restaurant in Merthyr Road when we particularly welcome anyone interested in National Seniors • Wednesday March 29 – Tour of Fourex Brewery in Milton followed by beer tasting • From 9.15am Wednesday April 5 – general meeting at Merthyr Uniting Church with four guest speakers from local organisations. For further information about NSA or any of our activities call Val Murphy on 0403 713 040 or read the monthly newsletter published on the website www.nsanewfarmbranch.com.

Last year more than half of students at participating schools were cycling, scootering, walking, car-pooling or using public transport to get to and from school on dedicated Active School Travel days.

The fort defending Brisbane

We know that children who are physically active on the way to school are more alert and attentive in class and arrive at school ready to learn.

What is Queensland’s foremost military exhibit, with extensive historic fortifications, the state’s largest military museum and regular military re-enactments? Answer: Fort Lytton, which will be the topic of the New Farm and Districts Historical Society’s March meeting. Harry Lynas, honorary secretary of the Fort Lytton Historical Association, will explain how the extensive installation defended Brisbane continuously from colonial times until after World War II.

Brisbane Central State School at Spring Hill has also recently participated, and the three-year Active School Travel Program is designed to educate and motivate students, parents and teachers to leave the car at home and actively travel, reducing traffic in and around school areas.

ACTIVATING OUR INNER CITY PARKS FOR OUR ACTIVE COMMUNITY We are getting on with the job keeping Brisbane cleaner, greener and more sustainable. Locals will be aware that the Wickham Park precinct is an 8.5 hectare area that forms a green gateway between the CBD and Spring Hill. The area includes Wickham Park, Observatory Park and Emma Miller Place and is home to some of Brisbane’s most treasured heritage sites, including the Old Windmill and Spring Hill Reservoirs.

program of The Courtiers, the showbiz heir’s debut was accomplished at nearby Nurse Paul’s Private Hospital at “Merkara”, 11 Franklin Street, Highgate Hill (the house is still there). Afterwards someone apparently sent a telegram congratulating the proud father on “two howling successes”. The new arrival was ideally placed for a first-hand education in stagecraft, thus the seeds of a great theatrical career were well-and-truly planted. The newcomer’s Scots grandparents, John and Margaret McCallum, had emigrated to Queensland in 1862. Of their three sons, two survived: Archibald Stewart and John Neil. The strongly Presbyterian family farmed first at Bald Hills, then after the death of Mr McCallum senior in 1873, moved to the Valley-New Farm area.

The widowed Mrs McCallum lived with her younger son at Duddingston before moving in 1916 a stone’s throw to “Ahmoorga” which still stands at 961 Brunswick Street opposite the park. For young John McCallum, visiting his grandmother – who seemed a formidable “Queen Victoria” figure from family photographs – simply entailed negotiating the easement from Bowen Terrace through the New Farm Bowls Club, then turning left and walking to the fourth house. When Margaret McCallum passed away there in 1930 aged 94, her death was reported as, “breaking another link in the chain connecting the early days of Queensland”. On the other hand, visiting Uncle Archie, who worked at McWhirters in the Valley, meant a short walk

While film stars John McCallum and Googie Withers were such a classy double act in the post-World War II years that first names were sufficient, who would guess that John McCallum spent a little of his boyhood in New Farm. John’s parents, John Neil McCallum and his English-born wife Lillian “Elsie” (Dyson) had lived at handsome “Duddingston” (now Durlington) at 591 Lower Bowen Terrace since about 1905. JN McCallum was manager and owner of the Cremorne vaudeville theatre, an open-air playhouse in South Brisbane touted as featuring “Delightful Costumes, with Lots of Good Clean Wholesome Comedy” and being “The Acme of Refinement”. In other circumstances, young John might have been born in New Farm, perhaps at Nurse Cooper’s Nursing Home at 55 Barker Street. Instead on March 14, 1918, when the Cremorne was featuring a new

to “Helenslea” (named after the immigrant ship which had brought the McCallums) on the corner of Bowen Terrace and Oxlade Drive. Though the original “Helenslea” is gone, until recently a granddaughter of AS McCallum lived on the property which had been in the family since the 1890s. Just how much time the youthful John McCallum spent in New Farm is a moot point since the family also had a seaside home, “Cremorne” at Sandgate, which was ideal for entertaining theatrical and prominent people. Though the young boy was soon off to England for his primary schooling, he returned to finish his senior education at the Anglican Church Grammar School where he became school captain. Despite spending much of his early life away from Australia, the Antipodean roots had been laid down. One day in the mid-1960s, John had an idea for a TV series. “You see,” he reputedly told Googie, “nobody’s got a kangaroo except Australia.” The rest, as they say, is history, or in this case, “television”.

SPRING HILL

SPRING HILL

There’s something missing in Spring Hill, but what?

Are we planning enough for learning and play?

BY TIMOTHY SWANSTON PHOTOS BY JAMES JESSUP The draft Spring Hill Neighbourhood Plan has been rejected by the State Government, which triggers at least another few months of community consultation. It’s a battleground between the expanding CBD and a desire for preservation. Now that the draft plan is back with Brisbane City Council and residents, it’s time to take stock of the state of the small inner-city suburb. The principal of Ray White Spring Hill, Sam Mayes, said that there had been a feeling of anticipation in Spring Hill. “Everyone for a long time has been waiting for the suburb to pop,” Mr Mayes said. “There’s an underlying question about why it hasn’t quite done that yet,” he said. “It could be that Spring Hill doesn’t have much of a hub and to create that you only need one or two really good restaurants or cafes. You don’t need a full strip of 20 restaurants.” Dai Gwynne-Jones is the Valley Chamber of Commerce’s community engagement member for Spring Hill. He said that labelling Spring Hill was quite hard and this added to its woes. “I think that it’s quite difficult to really define Spring Hill, as part of it is recognised as an extension to the CBD while there’s also such amazing residential areas in the suburb. “Spring Hill is so popular because it is a really pleasant place to live and to work so close to the CBD and it’s got great bones to grow and accommodate more people and businesses,” he said.

Befitting this livability, Spring Hill has a far younger median age than the rest of Australia, at age 31 and 37.3 respectively according to 2014 Bureau of Statistics data. Mr Mayes said that many more families were moving into the area in recent times due to the changing face of houses in Spring Hill. “Every single decent-sized house that we sell is going to a family of kids going to the schools in the area – there’s plenty more families moving in,” he said. “The more the houses get renovated, raised and become larger in size it means that there’s more options for more families to move in. “That means, though, that the houses are certainly getting more expensive, because more families want the convenience of living here.” Mr Gwynne-Jones said he had noticed a growing tendency towards business services in the area. “The business mix here in Spring Hill has been changing over the years and at the moment there’s certainly a fair amount of creative services businesses.

“There’s such a mix of activity which makes it an interesting hub, between its homes, schools, hospitals and businesses.” Despite this, Boundary Street has only begun picking up in terms of activity, with The Johnson complex serving as a prime example. Mr Gwynne-Jones said more could be done to motivate Spring Hill into being better activated for business and livability, such as improved walkability and aesthetics along with more green space and streetscapes. “Boundary street is primed for growth and that should come

through good development and great initiatives like The Johnson,” he said. “We all hope that this great repurposing of an old site will be a catalyst for complementary development while still maintaining the character of the suburb. “Boundary Street really needs to become a focal point of Spring Hill. “But there is much work to be done to encourage development to improve Boundary Street – ideally, we want current property and business owners to invest in the area but it’s quite challenging. “When the casino is developed, along with the entertainment precinct in Roma Street Parklands, Spring Hill really becomes more of an amazing spot but those two major projects are a while away,” Mr Mayes said. It’s a safe bet to say that over the next round of community consultation, residents of Spring Hill and policy makers will have an interesting dialogue about the future of the suburb.

As the number of families moving into the Spring Hill area with children skyrockets, parents at Brisbane Central State School (BCSS) have flagged concerns about the size of classes and available space at the school. The number of children at the school has increased by more than 230 per cent in 12 years, with 310 students presently attending BCSS compared with enrolments of 93 in 2005. The Queensland Government Statistician’s Office is forecasting continued enrolment growth for the next few years. Kirsten Lovejoy, acting president of the BCSS P&C and parent at the school for 13 years, said that she thought there was little available recreational space at the school. “We know that there are problems at the school now in terms of play space. That’s been a concern we’ve raised at the P&C a number of times over the years,” Ms Lovejoy said.

Through the reflection of the mirror in his barber shop, George Konstantinou has seen Spring Hill transform over 40 years. He put a hand on my shoulder and pointed into the reflection. “See the date?” he said. I made out the writing on the shop window: “Established 1978.” George has been a fixture of Spring Hill for three generations and in that time he has witnessed the suburb grow from a unique perspective. “There used to be a lot of service enrolment history for BCSS indicated steady enrolments over previous years. “The Department of Education and Training monitors school capacity and enrolment data, as well as projected enrolment growth across the short, medium and long term to ensure that future growth needs are planned for appropriately,” the spokesperson said. “Current utilisation figures show that there is sufficient capacity to cater for in-catchment enrolment growth for the medium term.” Member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace said that this planning process was completed in 2015-16. “Throughout the process our school communities, including the P&Cs, were very active in the consultation process and were able to raise important issues which have been reflected in their current masterplan,” Ms Grace said. “I ensured that the masterplan was designed for the sustainable development and growth of the school, and all additional facilities will comply with the plan. “This, combined with the addition of the Queensland Health buildings that I secured for the school, means it has been a really positive outcome for the school,” she said.

rooms, it was rough. It was a rough area,” he said. His clients have ranged from doctors to carpenters, from fathers to sons and George has gained an experience allowing him to cater for everyone. “I still enjoy my work, I still love it. My clients come to switch off and everyone is more comfortable oneon-one. “You can come and sit in the seat with a beer, coffee or juice – or you can sit on the bench and watch the world go by.”

Choice is important in hearing When acquiring hearing aids, you need to have choice to get the style and, most importantly, the features you need. Many hearing providers are directly owned by hearing-aid manufacturers or have a preferred supplier agreement with one specific brand. While some may allow fittings of other brands if required, others will not give you any options but their own products. Why is that a problem? Like many other industries, different hearing aid manufacturers have unique patented features and technologies specific to their brands. It’s like cars. If you need to get from A to B fast, you might choose a sports car designed specifically for speed. However, if you wanted to get from A to B and it involved some crosscountry trekking a 4WD is a much better choice. The same is true for hearing aids. treated adequately with solutions from just one specific brand. Some patients have considerations other than just a hearing loss that need to be factored in. Like the young professional who heads to the gym at lunchtime. Or the elderly woman with little agility in her fingers, making battery placement troublesome. Or the profoundly deaf man who needs an implant to restore his hearing. Everyone has different needs and different requirements. That’s why it’s important that when you have been professionally diagnosed, your audiologist can recommend and fit from a variety of brands and technologies ensuring you get the right solution for you. Life gets yummier by the mouthful Locally owned and operated Mayfield Chocolates has been making Spring Hill more chocolatey since operations were moved here from the Gold Coast in 2002. Owner Peter Ingall strives to capture the flavours of Australia in his confectionery. “We use Queensland rum, South Australian brandy, wattle, lemon myrtle, Kakadu plum, macadamia nuts,” Peter said. “Things like that.

Neighbour Day for Men “The idea is Australia makes a lot of good foods, so why wouldn’t we use some of them in the chocolates?” The company has been recognised for its quality products, having won competitions in the Sydney Royal Easter show and a gold medal in Belgium. You can find their range of chocolates at 155 Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill, or online at: www.mayfieldchocolates.com.au

The Spring Hill Men’s Shed will celebrate Neighbour Day in Bedford Park on March 26. Men’s Shed president Robert Collins said the day was specifically about the importance of connecting with elderly neighbours. But that was only a small part of what the Men’s Shed stood for. “It’s a place where men can congregate, particularly men living in cramped accommodation – inner suburbs and apartments and so on,” Mr Collins said.

“Social connection is a very big thing for people as they get older. If they lose that connection, it leads to mental health problems.” The Men’s Shed provides a place for men to socialise and talk with each other as they complete hands-on projects together using tools provided. “Unlike women who are quite willing to talk and verbalise problems, men tend to bottle it up,” Mr Collins said. “Men don’t talk, men work shoulder-to-shoulder.” The initiative is supported by New Farm Rotary Club, Friends of Bedford Park and has assistance from Brisbane City Council and Communify. For more information, contact Rob Collins on 0413 205 499

It’s on like Ping Pong Spring Hill residents are now enjoying new and improved facilities at Bedford Park, with Council completing installation of a new tabletennis table. “Council is committed to providing an array of outdoor and recreational spaces right across the city for the community to enjoy,” said Cr Howard.

“We’re working to deliver the vibrant and liveable communities that we deserve and this investment is just one way we’re ensuring Brisbane is headed in the right direction. “Bedford Park is a well-utilised space in the local community and the upgrades will further encourage local residents to enjoy the facilities on offer.”

Hearing loss is invisible... Shining light on Wickham Park Precinct work Council workers will be active in the Wickham Park precinct, the 8.5ha area between the CBD and Spring Hill. Safety lighting will be installed along the path that extends from Wickham Terrace to Albert Street, landscaping will be upgraded and the existing fence that borders the park at Wickham Terrace will be removed. The precinct, encompassing Wickham Park, Observatory Park and Emma Miller Place, houses many of Brisbane’s most treasured heritage sites, such as the Old Windmill and the Spring Hill Reservoirs. Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard said the project aimed to improve visibility for pedestrians and

cyclists using Wickham Park and Observatory Park. The works are part of the Wickham Park Precinct Plan, which was developed and released in 2016 to guide the improvement, maintenance and management of the parks, connecting spaces and heritage sites in the area, to meet the changing needs of the city, residents and visitors. Cr Howard said her job was to keep Brisbane cleaner, greener and more sustainable. “That’s why I’m pleased to let local residents know that we’ll be doing even more in the coming months to enhance this important community space,” she said.

Councillor for Brisbane Central and deputy chair of the planning committee Vicki Howard said that Council already conducted more consultation than the Sustainable Planning Act required. “Following changes Council made based on the feedback Council received from consultation with the residents, the State Government has required Council to undertake further consultation,” Cr Howard said. “Seventy-three submissions were made to Council during the last round of community consultation and many of these resulted in changes to the plan. “I’m impressed with the level of engagement people in our community have had with this process, which shows a lot of dedication and commitment from local residents and businesses,” she said. “No other government in Queensland (including the State Government) gives residents as much chance to provide feedback on what happens in their local areas as BCC does.” Kirsten Lovejoy, spokesperson for the Spring Hill Community Group (SHCG) and Greens candidate for

Brisbane Central, said that the SHCG was concerned about what she called “disrespect” for existing heritage and the height of buildings that could be allowed, along with the increase in size of the hospital precinct. “We are very pleased that it’s back with the community. Hallelujah!” Ms Lovejoy said. “We couldn’t believe that it was potentially going to go through in the shape that it was in, so we are very pleased we now have an opportunity to have proper consultation and engagement,” she said. “We want to make sure what comes out of the plan is a focus on sustainable development and a respect for the residents and the heritage value that exist within the community.” The draft plan will now need to undergo further public consultation and will then be resubmitted to the State Government for approval. “I encourage the neighbourhood and the community to put their views and their comments forward,” Ms Grace said. “Clearly we want to ensure integrity of the process and we’d like to make sure the residents are heard.”

Ironing out a family mystery One Friday afternoon my wife noticed what appeared to be burns on the back of our daughter’s hand and fingers. There were no reports of any accidents when she was collected that afternoon from kindy. She was reluctant to say what had happened but eventually confessed. She explained in great detail that she had been riding on the back of Halle’s motorbike across a paddock and she had lent down to pick a flower, burning her fingers on the exhaust pipe in the process. This was her story and she stuck to it for a week. I ride a Vespa and thought maybe she had somehow burned her hand on its exhaust but after an inspection it was pretty clear that wasn’t possible. Having no other options, over the next few days we reiterated the dangers of doing acrobatic manoeuvres on the back of a moving vehicle, the importance of wearing a helmet, and instructed Halle to be more responsible. It wasn’t until a week later that in a moment of weakness she confessed that she had burned her hand on the

PAUL FAIRWEATHER When I was young, I didn’t have imaginary friends but I did have an alter ego. For a year when I was 7, I was Jeffery Burns, and Jeffery Burns always wore a green towelling hat, including to bed. I don’t recall where I got the name from or why I adopted it. From the recollection of my parents he wasn’t a scapegoat for my misdemeanors, I was just Jeffery Burns in a green towelling hat, and that was that. My daughter, on the other hand, has had imaginary friends from an early age. She has always been social and makes friends easily, so our family of four was quickly swelled to six with the constant addition of her friends Dee Dee and Halle. Dee Dee has always been and remains 3, and Halle has always been a teenager.

back of the “thing that is used to iron the clothes”. It must really have hurt but she didn’t say anything, believing she had done something wrong (compared with riding pillion behind an unlicensed imaginary teenager). A twinge of guilt washed over me when I realised I was responsible, not Halle, for the injury because I had left the iron out. I like to iron the school uniforms and my shirt in the mornings. I find it therapeutic and it is one part of my life where it is so easy to straighten out the wrinkles, to quickly impose order.

I rarely iron a day in advance. Besides being a “just-in-time person”, it comes from an incident when someone broke into my car and stole loose change, and my beautifully ironed shirt. I felt very aggrieved that I had ironed a shirt that I never got to wear. I did take responsibility for the ironing accident but for a fleeting moment I was tempted to say it had been Jeffery Burns, not me. As for Halle and Dee Dee, they visit less and less frequently these days. But that is the way some friendships go, especially with a friend as mobile as Halle.

Purple Olive closes Much-loved James Street Italian restaurant The Purple Olive has closed for the last time. Husband and wife Malik and Tamsin Theresine owned the restaurant for more than 10 years after purchasing the already 10-year-old restaurant. Head chef and restaurant manager Malik said the pair had closed the business to spend more time with family. “My youngest would be waking up in the morning and asking if I was looking after her tonight, and six days a week I’d be saying sorry darling, not tonight,” Mr Theresine said. “That was heartbreaking – it’s extremely challenging raising a family and running a business,” he said. “Unfortunately we’ve upset a lot of people: there’re lots of teary eyes on Facebook.” Mr Theresine is spending his days between his family and putting together a series of cookbooks featuring The Purple Olive’s best dishes after getting plenty of emails and requests for his recipes.

The Valley Chamber of Commerce (VCC) drew 74 business leaders and politicians for its first local engagement lunch of the year, “A Creative and Liveable Valley”. The lunch and drinks event at Newstead venue The Triffid sparked conversation about the future of Fortitude Valley to create a more functional suburb for business. Tony Gleeson, local area engagement committee chair of the VCC, said the event ran very well. “Engagement lunches are a very successful concept that gives us a platform to discuss local issues together,” Mr Gleeson said. “It went very well and helps us add to our visioning process for the area which will be delivered at the end of the year,” he said. “We’re creating really positive ground-level communications between businesses, which helps us lobby for better outcomes for the Valley from all levels of government.” Triffid owner John Collins said it was great having the VCC, local

business leaders and politicians meet at the venue. “The Triffid is a big part of the VCC. It’s awesome to have people from the VCC down here and welcome them to the Triffid,” Mr Collins said. “It’s a great chance for us to showcase what we can do and we’re sharing some great ideas,” he said. “This is going to be a massive

suburb in the coming years, so it’s great to be on the radar of the VCC and Council being here is a great thing,” The event was attended by Federal MP for Brisbane Trevor Evans, Deputy Councillor Adrian Schrinner, infrastructure chair Cr Amanda Cooper and local Councillor Vicki Howard.

ANNABELLE’S TIPS This recipe employs the same principle as a “melt and mix” but feels far fancier with the addition of beurre noisette (translation: hazelnut butter). Daniel says the trick to a getting the butter right is to ensure the milk solids that settle at the bottom of the saucepan are dark brown. If they turn black the butter will be bitter. Daniel says this recipe can be kept in the fridge for several days and baked when desired. Depending on your oven and tray, these take 15-25 minutes to cook. I can never find my cake tester so I lightly shake the tray instead: if the batter wobbles it’s still raw but if it’s “stiff” it’s ready.

It’s not the easiest thing in the world. Bread has copped a bad wrap because a lot of bakeries are trying to produce a lot of it quickly. I’d done the interview for architecture and someone asked me, “If that doesn’t work out what do you want to do?” I said: “Oh, I’ll just do bread and pastry.” I had made bread at home, I like the science behind things and pastry does follow that, it’s edible science. So a friend of a friend knew someone who had a bakery in Sydney and I just walked into the store one day.

You may not know his name and you may not have visited his bakery but it’s likely you’ve eaten Daniel Mikus’ bread. It’s been a seemingly meteoric rise for the Gold Coast boy who opened Danny’s Bread on Commercial Road just 18 months ago but Daniel’s been labouring in the industry for 14 years, even working alongside Adrian Zumbo. It happened a little bit by accident, I suppose. My mum is not the most amazing cook ever so my two sisters and I learned how to, and if we wanted something tasty we had to make it ourselves. I wasn’t planning for it to be a career, after school I moved to Sydney to study architecture.

ADVERTORIAL

Traveller settles down to help others settle down CLAUDIA MARCHAND

Having lived in New Farm for nine years, working with Brett Greensill at L.J. Hooker, Claudia Marchand knows that a home in this suburb is as close as it gets to “living the dream”. “We just love it here,” she said. Claudia moved with her then-young family from France to Australia 30 years ago, living up and down the country before settling in New Farm in 2008. During these years, she and her husband Alain ran a gelato business in Port Douglas and shops on the Sunshine Coast. “It’s teamwork that makes the difference,” said Alain. Claudia said: “We live in New Farm like we lived in France, supporting

our local shops and businesses, walking to the park and enjoying our unique lifestyle. “Our daughter also lives here and our granddaughter attends the local primary school. It’s a family thing for us,” she said. On her work in real estate, Claudia said: “For me it’s all about people. It’s about helping people to achieve their dreams of moving from one place to another, finding solutions where possible while experiencing the best service. “I’ve done a lot of moving around in my life and was lucky to meet great professionals along the way, who inspired me to embrace this career.” Working in real estate just made a lot of sense she said, a move based on her passion for communication and customer service. “It’s a people industry. It’s an extension of what I’ve always done and it just makes sense to me to be in the business here in New Farm.”

Saturday the 25th February & the 4th March are likely to be 2 huge weeks for auctions across the country. When you consider that auctions usually have a 3-4 week lead in and the vast majority of sellers wait until after Australia day to list their property, it gives strong support to this prediction. There is a lot of interest in these results, it will give a good sized market sample and the results will either spur on or cool the 2017 market. As I look at my calendar for the upcoming week there is currently 37 auctions locked in and the majority of those agents are reporting strong inspection numbers.

Over the next week and a half I’ll call auctions from entry level homes at Ipswich through to the hotly anticipated prestige sale of 579 Lower Bowen Terrace New Farm. Last year the entry level market was hotter than a summer seatbelt, so its all eyes on the high end to see if the market has migrated north. Over the last few weeks we have seen the newspapers swell with prestige homes hitting the real estate lift outs around the country marketing upcoming auction events. When you see a wave of high end homes hit the market, you can safely assume those owners have done their research and they feel comfortable there is a pool of waiting buyers. In Brisbane specifically the $2million plus market represents exceptional value when compared to our neighbours down the round in Sydney & Melbourne. This value and competition gives confidence to a market. These activities will give access to buyers to purchase these rarely available properties with the knowledge the market is currently in a solid position with other buyers supporting their decision to buy multi million dollar property. haesley is the local principal of living here cush partners and a columnist for the sunday mail. portions of this article may be an extract from his column.
