The council and state government might as well give up and declare that anyone riding on the footpath is not required to wear a helmet.

MIKE O’CONNOR mike@parkinpr.com.au

If the Easter Bunny smiles on you this month, then congratulations for doing the right thing by your fellow residents. As part of its speed awareness program, Brisbane City Council is featuring the rabbit on its Slow for SAM traffic monitors that usually flash a smiley face for motorists observing the speed limit. Infrastructure Chairman Amanda Cooper said more than 250 million vehicles had passed the monitors since they were launched in 2013, with two in every five speeding motorists reducing their speed after seeing the flashing signs and four out of five observing the limit. The scheme is a good one. While it might be argued that traffic enforcement is a state government responsibility, the monitors increase

the livability of our suburbs without imposing financial penalties on those who inadvertently exceed speed limits. In the case of serial offenders, nothing less than the loss of their driver’s licence is likely to curb their anti-social behavior.

Less successful is the requirement imposed on the riders of Lime scooters to wear a helmet. This has become a joke for you don’t have to walk too far to appreciate that it is being flouted. The police service has better things to do than chase bareheaded scooter riders, so the council and state government might as well give up and declare that anyone riding on the footpath is not required to wear a helmet. Pedestrian safety and speeding by scooter riders remain issues and people continue to “double –up”, sometimes with children, along the Teneriffe-New Farm river walk.

Scooters seem destined, however, to become part of inner-city life so those who feel intimidated by their presence on footpaths are going to have to learn to live with them. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and for those who believe, a holy Easter.

Election FEVER The May edition of My Village News will feature editorial and advertising for the upcoming Federal Election. Deadline for electoral content is April 18.

Wharf ferry plans progress With its river’s edge location, public parkland, hotel, dining and bars, Howard Smith Wharves is the ideal location for the city’s next ferry terminal, says Cr Vicki Howard (pictured). “I am committed to delivering one of Australia’s most modern public transport networks,” she said. “Our world-class river transport network is just one of the ways that we’re getting people home sooner and safer with more travel options.” Council is considering the most appropriate location for the terminal and will be undertaking river-based geotechnical investigations along the Howard Smith Wharves river frontage from Monday April 1 to assist with the planning and design of the proposed ferry terminal. As part of the river-based investigations, a barge with a drilling rig is planned to spend up to two weeks at Howard Smith Wharves to undertake core sample drilling. This work will generally take place

Public park protected?

from Monday to Saturday between 7am-5pm, but some activity may be required outside these hours to align with the tide. Residents and businesses in close proximity may notice a small increase in noise associated with these works, as the barge moves into place and the drilling occurs. The drilling rig is powered by a compact diesel unit. As the works will be occurring from the water, minimal impacts are expected. CityHopper and CityCat services between Riverside and Dockside will continue to run as scheduled. For queries regarding the works, contact the project team on 1800 884 681 or email ferryinfrastructure@ brisbane.qld.gov.au.

Anxious Spring Hill residents are reassured by the Brisbane City Council that it remains committed to protecting the heritage listed Victoria Park. Dr Joan Jacobi expressed her concerns (March Issue, My Village News) that Council is proposing to build a staircase down from the Centenary Pool Carpark to the tennis courts leased to St. Joseph’s College and which are managed by Lifetime Tennis. Dr Jacobi, a long term defender of the park, said this would be the third staircase built for use by St Joseph’s. “The first was built because of brutal misuse of newly planted landscaping in the park after the ICB was constructed (cross-country running exercises and short cuts from the cricket courts), while the second was built for much the same reason to provide access for the students to the cricket nets.” She added that building another staircase was an “obscene” and unnecessary expense. “Why after 35 years are stairs

needed,” she said. Council chairman for Environment, Parks and Sustainability Cr David McLachlan said “Council continues to investigate options to make Victoria Park more accessible so people of all ages and abilities can continue to enjoy it for many years to come”. “Thousands of people visit Victoria Park every year, whether it be for the Council-owned tennis courts, pool or dog off-leash area, and we are committed to making it safer for people of all ages and abilities. “The tennis courts are owned by Council and operated by a lessee like many other tennis courts across the city, with the courts used around 1000 times every year in addition to local schools. “The steep slope between the pool car park and the tennis court is eroding, making it slippery and very difficult to navigate for people of all abilities. “As there are no other formal paths in this part of Victoria Park, Council is investigating options to install a staircase “As Victoria Park is heritage listed, any proposals will be subject to approval from the State Government Department of Environment and Science,” he said.

EDITOR Absolute slap in the face I have been monitoring closely in the lead up to the latest tree removal on Vernon Terrace and thought,“well here is an opportunity for the Council to show that they can replace a tree with some alternative to still provide shade and greenery to an area which is characterised by such”.

What a shame they got this so wrong, as it truly was a missed opportunity to show how to suitably manage the situation.

Unfortunately the selected tree is an absolute slap in the face to the community. It makes me quite upset every time I walk or drive by. What a shame they got this so

wrong, as it truly was a missed opportunity to show how to suitably manage the situation. What type of tree is this and why did they not transplant an older/larger tree in this case? Is the Council able to provide any information on this as it really is hard to comprehend this decision unless suitably clarified. - NONI FITZGERALD, NEW FARM

What’s wrong with tap water You guys need your head checked. Having dedicated 6 pages out of the first 11 (including the cover) to the removal of a street tree in Teneriffe, I find it ridiculous that you would then have a recipe tip (March Issue of My Village News) recommending the use of bottled water to make pasta instead of tap water. What a joke. Firstly, there is nothing wrong with our tap water and, secondly have you been watching the news? Have you not heard plastic waste is a bit of an issue? - DAVID

of the new build (New Farm Neighbourhood Centre story March Issue My Village News). However the centre’s open house hours are only four hours per day and four days a week, closed on Wednesday. With $1 million plus being spent, increasing the open hours to give the community greater access to the services would be the next logical step. Ten-plus years ago the centre was open M-F, 9am-4.30 pm. A newsletter was produced monthly and barbecues with 50-plus people attending made for a vibrant atmosphere. A lot more was achieved, with less than there is there now. Even increasing the open hours to M-F and 9am-2pm would be a lowcost way to achieve far better access for everyone. One more part-time person would fill that requirement. Considering the amount of money spent on the building, surely people should be the focus of the upgrade. - FLABERNAXTED.

for conserving the essence of character buildings. Over the past 40 years, David has created an amazingly diverse architectural portfolio that includes designing the 139 River Terrace Apartments, next door to his own home. Other designs include such eclectic buildings as the Finke Aboriginal Medical Centre in the red heart of Australia, the Echo Village in Currumbin and a large number of grand renovations to some of Brisbane’s most stately homes. Referring to the nearly 60 red dots on his Brisbane map indicating homes in which he has had creative input, he says “I am a conservation architect and when renovating homes my underlying philosophy is that on completion, the newly extended house is not only enhanced but that it looks like it was always that way – not added bits tacked on”. Whilst sport, reading and architecture keep him busy, David’s heart lies undoubtedly in protecting his beloved Kangaroo Point precinct. A member of the Kangaroo Point Resident’s Association since the 1980s, one has only to take a stroll around David’s suburb to see the impact of his protective lobbying. “I moved to Kangaroo Point in 1977 because it was cheap and close to the city, and now having just sold my house to move to the Bayside, it is a wrench to leave after nearly 43 years. “But,” he adds cheekily, “I will still be around to annoy, petition and lobby where I see the need in the Kangaroo Point area.”

New programming director joins the Powerhouse The Brisbane Powerhouse has attracted 25-year industry veteran Katherine Hoepper to the role of programming director. Ms Hoepper (pictured) says her departure from a current role at La Boite Theatre is tinged with sadness, but she’s excited by the new opportunities presented by Brisbane Powerhouse. “The role of programming director gives me the chance to dive deeply into programming and producing in a new dynamic and energised environment,” says Ms Hoepper. Powerhouse artistic director Kris Stewart lauded Ms Hoepper’s strong advocacy for Queensland artists and her devotion to empowering them and encouraging their work to be presented. “Katherine’s passion and vitality will bring a fresh perspective for this side of the organisation,” she said. “She shows incredible empathy of both the challenges and joys of being an artist and also has a tight network of relationships within the local creative community.”

La Boite’s artistic director Todd MacDonald says the search for Katherine’s replacement has begun, but won’t be rushed. “She will be missed, but we are super excited for her and her new role at a great collaborative organisation like Brisbane Powerhouse.”

Author inspires kindness and creativity

Riverlife urges safer scooting

By EJ Silvester I hope that it will inspire little girls to create, communicate and to show hospitality and kindness to others.

Author Jacqui Preugschat’s (pictured) new book Tessa’s Lovely, Beautiful and Very Elegant Tea Party has a secret goal. “My wish when writing the book is that this series will foster family connections and will encourage children to use their talents and discover new ones,” the author said. “The main character in my book series is a very elegant, talented, loving, creative, active, kind and adventurous girl. “I hope that it will inspire little girls to create, communicate and to show hospitality and kindness to others.”

The book invites girls aged 5-12 to join Tessa in creating a tea party from start to finish. It includes step-by-step instructions for the invitations, thank-you cards, food and decorations to designing the dresses and hats to wear. The activity book is an interactive journey with embedded QR codes that takes the reader straight to Tessa’s website to print out additional templates. Tessa’s Lovely, Beautiful and Very Elegant Tea Party is available at Mary Ryan’s Bookstore in New Farm.

Celebs showcase pets for charity

We came over from the UK, and I sent my daughter an email saying they’ve got dogs here. It’s great! - Jane & David Seabrooke

MVN took to the pavement to ask: “Would you support a trial of allowing small dogs on cross-river ferries?”

Sport stars, goats, celebrities, and Humphry B. Bear have been wrangled together by RSPCA all-star fundraiser Jennifer Vines for an afternoon of entertainment at Gasworks. The Celebrity and Pet Showcase, to be held on April 7 from 4pm, is Ms Vines’ latest effort in her quest to raise $10,000 for the RSPCA. It’s all part of an innovative project, which will see her embark on a top-secret adventure with fellow fundraisers, captured by production company Charity TV and aired on prime-time television. Ms Vines works at Screen Queensland in Newstead and is passionate about the RSPCA. “I have two adorable and highly energetic Jack Russells of my own, Charlie and Eddie,” she says. School continues to grow By Steph Maker As building and construction of the provisionally-named Inner City North State Secondary College continues, its heart and soul is bursting to life too, with the appointment of another senior leader. Foundation principal Sharon Barker has appointed a second deputy principal to work alongside her and fellow deputy Nathan Maddox, who was hired earlier this year. Cally Nielsen will head south from Bundaberg to add her experience to the growing faculty at the start of semester two, in July this year. The College has also reached the interview stage of their search for a business manager, with a successful applicant earmarked to start early next term. Ms Barker says they received a substantial number of excellent applicants, and the chosen candidate

will play a critical role in employing the school’s future support staff. Approximately 10-15 support staff are expected to start at the beginning of next year, and Ms Barkers says finding the best people will be a big job. “Those people will be a really important part of building the culture of the school,” she says.

The enrolment management plan and catchment map are about to be finalised.

The school is also on the hunt for six heads of department, with two HODs to take up duties at the start of semester two and an additional four to start in term four. Ms Barker is confident future students will have everything they need to continue their schooling under her principalship, especially as enrolment plans firm up. “The enrolment management plan and catchment map are about to be finalised,” says Ms Barker. “As soon as that they’re finalised,

we will be opening for expressions of interest.” Ms Barker emphasised enrolments will only be taken for future year seven students for the foundation class starting in 2020, with rolling year seven intakes continuing to 2025. Local Member for McConnel, Grace Grace MP, said the new state high school being constructed in Fortitude Valley was running to schedule, and so is the construction of a vibrant and energised leadership team lead by Foundation Principal, Sharon Barker.

“From the onset, Sharon has been leading the way with recruitment, and an exciting team with a strong sense of community, inclusion, kindness and courage, which are some of the hallmarks of our local area, is beginning to emerge,” Ms Grace said. “Congratulations to Deputy Principal Cally Nielsen, the latest member of the team to join both Sharon and Deputy Principal, Nathan Maddox,” she said.

the desk of

BETH LEACH

“Roll over.” These are the two little words in the English language that rob me of a good night sleep regularly, because I’m married to the human chainsaw. I’m not completely innocent. I know I snore too because I wake myself up occasionally with a snuffle - sorry for the image readers, but, people in glass houses, you know… I’m guilty. For the first decade of marriage I wore earplugs to drown out the menagerie until the cartilage in my ears starting to ache so badly that I couldn’t wear them anymore. I said to David that the second decade would be on him to problem solve. He tried, with a couple of sets of mouthguards that didn’t really work and the chainsaw amped up nightly. Lack of sleep can’t be taken lightly as apart from being incredibly

frustrating, the negative impacts on the body and mind are huge. Sleep deprivation effects body weight, causes drowsiness, makes you feel foggy, depressed, makes you more forgetful and impairs your judgement. It also effects your sex drive (now I’ve got your attention), and dumbs you down. Lack of sleep causes higher risk of type 2 diabetes due to the release of insulin, increases heart disease, heart attack, irregular heartbeat and it may also be linked to risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. If this is the case we could be years away from knowing for sure. So, with all that in mind, David did some research, found a medical clinic locally (this is not an advertorial, by the way), and tried a new treatment for snoring. He’s had two out of three laser treatments and I’m very happy to report that there has been a marked improvement. Merv Russell says its ANZAC Day service this year will honour the wartime service veterans who manned Corvettes built in Australia. The Corvettes were quickly constructed in local shipyards and engineering plants across Australia, and fifty-six Bathurst Class ships were named after regional cities and towns that helped to finance local wartime fundraising efforts. The Corvettes were considered the workhorses of the Royal Australian Navy. They served as convoy escorts, mine sweepers, submarine surveillance, survey and assault ships in all theatres of war. Mr Russell says veterans will be seated in the front row. 10,000 crew members served in the Corvettes during World War II, but according to Mr Russell, veteran numbers are dwindling. “We do it all for them and what they did; it’s our pleasure” said Mr Russell. The service begins at 7:30am at Newstead Park to allow for travel to the Brisbane City ANZAC Day March, as the Navy will lead this year’s parade.

The inner-city riverside region is prepared to commemorate our servicemen and women on ANZAC day and locals are encouraged to show support. Events will be held across the area, beginning with dawn services. The Submariner’s Association dawn service will be held on the Heritage Trail on the Tenerife Boardwalk, with interested parties encourage to arrive at 5am for a 5.30am start. The RAN Corvettes service begins at 7.30am at Newstead Park, and the Sandakan POW Family and Friends services commence at 9am in New Farm Park. The City-New Farm RSL sub-branch will sell fundraising merchandise in Merthyr Village on April 13-14 and 2324 in the lead up to ANZAC Day.

Over the years, Kangaroo Point has evolved into a popular meeting point for rock climbing enthusiasts alike. More often than not you’ll find Newstead couple Alan Wan and his wife Joy Kim, expertly scaling the cliffs on Monday nights. The pair make a powerful duo not only in the climbing world but also as owners and principal physiotherapists at Anytime Physio. With a passion for the sport and their profession, it comes to no surprise they specifically cater to rock climbing injuries - assisting individual clients and providing on-site coverage for events. “We were at Urban Climb all weekend at the QLD State Lead Titles, a sport climbing event that will be one of the disciplines in the upcoming 2020 Olympics,” Mr Wan explains. It’s not just at rock climbing events you’ll find them. Mr Wan and Ms Kim are dedicated to their profession and make regular

New Farm United will host a school holidays soccer camp to encourage children of all ages to join rank as the club reaches for new heights in memberships and success ahead of a new season. Led by director of coaching Rinichi Mikami, the soccer camp will be held between April 15-17 at New Farm Park. As one of many initiatives aimed towards building deeper engagement with the community-based club, the camp provides an opportunity to hone the skills of the junior players. “We are looking to secure some 50 juniors for the camp – boys and girls,” Mikami says, adding his intention to include several players with Japanese national team experience as assistant coaches. “It’s an opportunity for the kids to get good coaching from players with this experience, and a chance for these players to be part of this community.” In addition to the camp, Mikami will

also be conducting clinics through his soccer coaching business, Go Zamurai, expected to begin in late April. Mikami believes success on the park will cultivate greater interest in the community-based club – resulting in more memberships and retaining young players for longer. “My focus is promoting teams into top tiers so they will continue coming to the club,” he says. “It is difficult keeping young players as they tend to stop playing after Primary School. “We lost about 30 per cent of under-12 and under-13 players from last year.” Mikami singles out the success of New Farm United’s Boys under-12 A Team, who were promoted into Division 1 this season after going undefeated last year. “They are quite strong,” he says. “I’m hoping they can be promoted into the Brisbane Premier League this year (the top tier).” This is historic for the club as no junior team has competed in the Brisbane Premier League before. “If the kids can play good football, have a great season and can secure good divisions, they definitely come back to play.”

VALERIE FERDINANDS @mummavalerie.mkr

Growing up in Delhi India there was the tradition of eating tantalising Indian curries laden with aromatic spices that continues today. There were fragrant rice dishes, hot naan, Turmeric dahl tempered with ghee and cumin seeds and a variety of vegetarian side dishes. Our household is multicultural, with my husband Errol’s Sri Lankan heritage and our children and extended family (most of whom live in this area) Aussies. They’ve seen some of these traditional recipes given a fresh, modern twist over the years and I have no doubt this was one of the reasons Courtney and I were pretty successful on My Kitchen Rules. We’re delighted to be involved again in MKR 10th Anniversary season and Queensland Health’s Healthier Happier campaign, sharing recipes with a focus on getting inspired, informed, motivated to lead a healthier life. In terms of food choices, no need to give up on flavour but start using spice, vinegars, citrus (I love tamarind) to perk up the taste buds without the calories. Courtney and I are also really looking forward to sharing our tips and tricks at the 2019 Modern Woman Expo in June at the Convention Centre.

We included our dahl recipe (spiced lentil dish) as a vegetarian meal option with brown rice and roasted spiced sweet potato, easy to make and very flavoursome. If you remember, I added a spoonful of dahl on the spicy vegetarian pies sold at the Bakeologist Bakery and these walked out the door completely sold out! There’s always a pot of dahl bubbling away in my kitchen. Lentils are just so versatile, high in fibre and protein and low in fat and great as a quick and easy side dish, a main meal option or as a soup. Use this as a basic recipe. I change it around all the time, so be creative add more spice, chilli, tomatoes or roasted vegetables let me know how you go. The key to getting good results with your cooking is always use fresh ingredients, as for spices, nothing compares to freshly roasted and ground. I use locally and ethically sourced produce and the good news is that chefs and restaurant owners have similar sentiments along with some great product developers and retailers in New Farm. If you’re a local supplier, producer or chef and are passionate about what you do, please get in touch by email or via Instagram/website!

Tasting today at the Metropolitan Hotel Recently refurbished Indriya restaurant head chef Eugene Lee thrives on juxtaposition and speaks fervently of his philosophy on life, aesthetics, and dining. He confesses to being a rebel, without the pretention, but with an immutable cause and vision. It’s chef Lee’s goal to introduce diners to bold flavours, cleverly combined, underpinned by a world of experience and a cosmopolitan aesthetic. In fact, with a fresh menu in place, he is more than ready to make his mark on Brisbane. In explaining the background to the name Indriya, chef Lee (pictured) begins to capture the essence of his culinary views. He says in Sanskrit the word relates to ‘senses’ and in Tamil, it roughly translates to ‘today’. This context helps make sense of his aversion to holding on tightly to a

‘signature dish’. “I’m a great believer in progression, that is my philosophy,” he says. Instead of a staple exemplar, he says he’s able to give diners something more personal. “I present to you a dish of today, of who I am, of what I’ve learned so far.” The ‘chef’s table’ experience is something special, or as Eugene says, “it’s where the magic happens”. The restaurant also caters for bespoke events, with furniture that speaks to the vision behind Indriya. Indriya open hours Wed - Sat, 4.30pm til late.

Opulence returns to Merthyr Road

Celebrating a beautiful 15 years exclusive, one-off pieces from vintage fashion, such as denim jackets embellished with colourful trims and designs. “The store is a round-the-world trip of must-have, vibrant fashion pieces,” says Sarah. “I love traditional, I love embroidery, the detail that has gone into their creations - many of these individual one-off pieces are priceless!” One of the fascinating back stories relates to the one-of-a-kind, brightly coloured hand-embroidered skirts which are produced by a women’s collective in a hill-tribe village of the Hmong people of Northern Thailand. The creative enterprise provides the women of the village with their own income and enables them to stay at home to look after their children.

A splash of colour and happy fashion has come to the Moray Street end of Merthyr Road with the recent arrival of boutique Miss Opulence. The pop-up store is run by Sarah Hutson, whose mother Sue ran a shop of the same name in the same location more than eight years ago. Sarah has been operating her own fashion business, SFH Designs, for over six years and runs a studio at Greenslopes. When the opportunity came up to re-visit the Merthyr Road location, Sarah jumped at the chance. The shop specialises in bright, colourful and avant-garde ladies clothing, clutches and handbags, hats and jewellery that has been sourced sustainably from a range of Fair-Trade suppliers in exotic countries such as Madagascar, Mexico, Thailand, India and Morocco. In addition, Sarah also creates

Your top three destinations? Stradbroke Island – It’s somewhere I’ve been visiting since a young age, so it’s very close to my heart. Luxembourg – A gorgeous European country Dubai with so much character. Rome – the history is just incredible. Fa vo u r i te t ra ve l t a l e ? One year I spent New Year’s Eve in Munich, Germany, where it’s traditional for the local people to set off their fireworks in the main city square, called the Marienplatz. We were crammed in with hundreds of others, with fireworks being haphazardly set off in all directions. When we were hit by one, my hair was momentarily set alight but all can

An “off the beaten track” story? For something completely different and quite adventurous, I went cage diving with the great white sharks which are found in the waters off Port Lincoln, in South Australia. We slept on the dive-boat for three nights, went diving with seals and then, of course, the sharks – it was an absolutely incredible experience! A really memorable dining experience? I visited a small, family-run restaurant in Rome called Trattoria il Tettarello. It was a classic Italian eatery located in the heart of the city, on the Via dei Capocci. The menu featured great local, traditional Roman cuisine including pasta and pizzas and was not expensive. We felt it was a good sign that it seemed to be very popular with the locals! #1 Travel Tip? Don’t “over-plan” your days too much. Leave some extra time to see and do random, spur of-the-moment things, that you might not yet know about. And follow the locals!

GERARD BENJAMIN

In June 1942 at the New Farm submarine base, 26-yearold US Navy ensign Bill Ruhe from Pennsylvania was keen to get himself assigned to a sub in order to see action against the Japanese. Luckily, Bill secured the job of engineering officer aboard S-37 but it was to prove a mixed blessing. The S-class was considered WWI vintage and S-37 had been under major repair at New Farm for the past two months. It was one of the five subs tied up alongside the large submarine tender Griffin which had a whole variety of workshops and repairmen needed to keep the subs operational. It seemed that every time S-37 tried to put to sea, successive problems forced it back to base. While a sea-test enabled it to sit at 103 feet on the bottom of Moreton Bay, when a deeper test to 135 feet

was tried, water began to flood in, so once again it was back to New Farm. This is when Bill Ruhe tried systematically to go from shop to shop on the Griffin in order to finalise the repair request list. Finally on 23 June at 0800, S-37 was released to go on patrol. Care was needed exiting Moreton Bay since there were minefields on both sides of the channel. Once the tip of Moreton Island was rounded and the course to Rabaul was set, the lookout was on for Japanese submarines. The patrol lasted almost a month. The normal procedure was to run on the surface at night then remain submerged during the day. Being so close to the equator, the lack of airconditioning made it extremely uncomfortable for the crew of 38 men. Returning to base brought its own perils. The RAN Signal Station at Wickham Point, Caloundra, had to be sure that the approaching vessel was friendly. There proved to be ‘great difficulty in establishing identity’ with S-37 at 2.25am on July 21, creating a ‘grave situation’, so a report from the time read. Two hours later, all was clarified

Making memories at the scout jamboree By Gibson Gray Recently a group of seven, myself included, went to the Australian Scout Jamboree. Over 10,000 boys and girls aged 10-14 all went to a little place called Tailem Bend an hour out of Adelaide on the banks of the Murray River. Let me take a moment to explain what Tailem Bend is like. Imagine the planet Mars with all its red dust. Then take all of the moisture out of the air (and I mean all of it), add a bunch of tents, leaders, kitchen flies and kids, add cyclone force winds and dust storms every afternoon, chuck in dingos and snakes for the fun of it and you maybe, just maybe have yourself a scout Jamboree. But there was so much more than just the dust.

Before we arrived, the planners and thinker’s split up into many different sub-camps and further into troops. These were people we slept, worked with and played with for 12 days. Each troop had a 5-6 leaders, 4060 kids, all of which split up into 5-7 patrols, and the big man in charge, the Jamboree Troop Leader (JTL) keeping their eye on us. We were lucky enough to have Platypus, Gecko, Nathan, Possum and Magpie, our trusty JTL. These were their scout names we knew them by. Between all of them, they fed us, made sure we washed ourselves, hustled us to activities, we had cleaned our clothes and made sure the campsite didn’t fall down all around us.

A cracker of a Christmas

Most nights they would work till 11pm and be up at 4am, so a big applause for them. Now there would be no fun without activities and we had a lot of them. Some were off-site and included swimming at Wet & Windy, overnight at Woodhouse and walking around

Adelaide at Metro Mania. Other on-site activities such as Trades, Bang, Whizz, Splash, The Cube and Hi-Tech kept us interested too. All in all, it was an amazing adventure and fun was had by all. We all met new friends, had new experiences and have learnt many new lessons along the way. I will treasure these memories and good times for years to come. For anyone interested, the next Jamboree is in 2021 so you can start thinking about it! If you would like to know more about joining Brisbane Central Scouts, call our secretary, Adam (My Dad) on 0418 708 661, email brisbanecentralscouts@ gmail.com or go to our website brisbanecentral.scoutsqld.com.au.

By EJ Silvester New Farm local Anne Berridge has been recognised for her outstanding effort selling in the Christmas Cracker Art Union Lottery for Choice, Passion, Life (CPL). CPL’s fundraising relationship manager Patricia Gold praised Anne’s relentless support and acknowledged the role of New Farm taking up a conscious role in her success. “Anne has given countless hours volunteering for Choice, Passion, Life and many locals would have seen Anne selling our Christmas Cracker Art Union tickets at Merthyr Bowls and local shopping centres late last year,” said Ms Gold. “Thanks to Anne’s dedication and the generosity of the New Farm community, Anne sold a record number of tickets, personally raising more than $1500 for kids with disabilities.”

Anne’s mission to help disadvantaged people has made a tremendous difference to CPL, with Ms Gold explaining how the money raised by the local community makes a real difference to the services that CPL are able to offer. “The money raised from our Christmas Cracker Lottery can go towards programs like CPL’s Let’s Talk, which helps children with disabilities find their voice by trialing communication technology and devices to find the one that works best for them,” she said.

COUNCIL CONNECTIONS UPGRADE TO BRISBANE’S OLDEST DRAINAGE IN THE PIPELINE As we’re sure you are aware, currently we are increasing capacity to the stormwater systems of Newstead and Teneriffe. Some of the city’s very first drainage networks were built in Teneriffe in the early 1900s to protect local residents and businesses from flooding at a time when urbanisation was encouraged.

We’re committed to ensuring our city has the services and infrastructure to meet the needs of future generations.

When the drainage network was constructed Brisbane’s entire population was about 110,000 people and today the city’s population is more than $1.1 million people and the area covering Teneriffe, Newstead and New Farm is home to more than 20,000 residents. These areas have a long history of flooding, and were underwater for several days during the major flood events of 1893, 1974 and 2011.

Nunsense at Nash

New Farm’s Nash Theatre is excited to bring musical comedy Nunsense to the stage in The Brunswick Room, at the Merthyr Road Uniting Church. The plot features a motley crew of nuns and their convent’s quest to raise funds for the burial of four bodies found in the freezer. Expect hilarious entertainment, including solo star turns, madcap dance routines, and even an audience quiz. The show kicks off with a preview showing on May 10 at 7.30pm, and continues until June 1, with tea, coffee and snacks available from a licensed bar. For tickets call 3379 4775, email nashtheatre4@bigpond.com or visit www.trybooking.com/455835.

The Queensland Pops Orchestra are set to kick off their 2019 series with a celebration of all things Celtic. Their new show, Celtic Mist, opens on May 18 at QPAC and will feature the world famous OzScot dancers plus the BBC Pipes and Drums band. The Brisbane Voices of Birralee choir will perform Celtic favourites. Tickets are available from qpac.com.au or by phoning 136 246.

The new infrastructure to be installed in the New Farm and Teneriffe area will include a new 1650mm stormwater pipe along Commercial Road from Vernon Terrace to Florence Street and a new, large stormwater drainage chamber will be constructed over the existing brick drain in the intersection of McLachlan Street and James Street.

COMPLIMENTARY SMILE EVALUATION

These new larger drains will connect in with the existing drainage network, which differ in size to achieve flood immunity with a section of the existing drain to be lined with reinforced concrete to improve its condition and extend the service life of the drain.

The main skeleton of Brisbane’s storm water drainage system was completed before the great depression in the 1900s and cost nearly £130,000.

Timber was originally used for kerbing and stone for the watertables, but in the late 1880s, Council began constructing all the water channels in its area out of concrete with stone kerbing.

Get ready to party like it’s 1922 with the Rotary Club of New Farm as they host their Party Like Gatsby fundraiser at The Brunswick Hotel. Set for May 10, the action kicks off at 7pm when Phoenix take to the stage to help revellers Charleston long into the night. Tickets are $50 (numbers are limited) and entry includes canapes and two complimentary drinks. Prepare to frock up in your flashiest Long Island garb, as prizes will be awarded to the best dressed.

MEHITABEL DOUGLAS- DRYSDALE

For an exquisite portrayal of passion, anguish, and artistry, make sure you see Queensland Theatre’s Hydra before it leaves Brisbane. Sue Smith’s portrayal of Australian authors Charmian Clift and George Johnston and their life together will leave you disturbed and heart broken in the best possible way. The beautifully simple Greek island set, the fascinating true story, and the truly compelling dramatic performances make Hydra a wellrounded masterpiece. Directed by New Farm local Sam Strong (pictured), Hydra presents the true story of Charmian and George’s escape from city life and their ensuing struggles in paradise. Anna McGahan presents Charmian as a bold, vivacious woman who suffers under the strain of her competing roles of wife, mother, and writer.

McGahan commands the audience’s attention and leaves no question as to whom the play is really about. Bryan Probets’ portrayal of George Johnston is quick witted, sharp tongued, and unpredictable. Unhinged by illness and illsuccess, Probets’ George adds an edge of unease to the performance, keeping the audience out of their comfort zone. McGahan and Probets were indubitably the stars of the show, but it was Ray Chong Nee who added the finishing touch for me.

Playing three different characters, Chong Nee portrayed flawless French and Greek accents respectively, and his role as the charismatic, seductive Jean-Claude was a delightful cherry on the already delicious cake that is Hydra.

Acrobats and antics Combining an exciting mix of circus, music, and drinking, Hold My Beer is set to be a hit at this year’s Anywhere Festival. Seasoned circus performers and coaches Kelsey Adams, Regan Henry, and Elyse Fitzpatrick will perform a series of impressive acrobatic feats across two different Brisbane bars, incorporating live music into the act. Finding inspiration from other circus shows and a desire to play around with the trio’s combined interests of music and circus, Kelsey says the show is designed to be fun and interactive. “We really enjoy performing, and we really enjoy bouncing off each other,” Kelsey said. “If we throw something in there that’s a little bit improvised or a little bit different, it’ll be to have fun with it and play with it.” The Anywhere Festival seeks to foster creativity and creative arts by

allowing performance to exist beyond the bounds of traditional theatres. Having been part of the festival two years in a row, Kelsey says she knew it was the perfect opportunity to

showcase Hold My Beer. “We knew what the Anywhere Festival would be like, and we knew we wanted to do [the show] in bars. “We knew the Anywhere Festival would be perfect for that.” Supported by Flipside Circus, who provided the trio with space and facilities to rehearse, Hold My Beer is presented by Half Hitch, Kelsey and Regan’s own production company. Hold My Beer will showcase in The End, West End and Bloodhound Corner Kitchen and Bar, Fortitude Valley.

Glamour for a cause By Shirley Luy From designing buildings to strutting the runway, University of Queensland architecture graduate Sarika McIntosh (pictured) could not have imagined the life-changing whirlwind that has been the past few months. The 20-year-old took the plunge and applied for Miss Universe Australia earlier this year, which opened up a whole new world of glamour and opportunity to pursue something she had always dreamed of. “I love children,” ,” Ms McIntosh says. “That’s where my heart strings are at. “With my architecture degree, one thing I’ve always wanted to do is go overseas and help rebuild homes for children and families in war-torn countries.” As a Miss Universe 2019 state finalist, Ms McIntosh fundraised for Toybox International, a charity dedicated to bettering the lives of sick and disadvantaged children in Australia. What followed was an outpouring of support from friends, family, and the local community - something Ms McIntosh is extremely grateful for. “I got a $200 donation and I just looked at it and got really overwhelmed and I just started crying,” she said. “I know it’s for a good cause but I was really taken back because I’m just a normal everyday girl.” Ms McIntosh raised more than $2000 in two weeks, spurred by her passion to make a lasting change. “I just thought there are kids who are sick and have cancer, and they don’t have an everyday normal life,” she says. “I just pictured that and I was on a mission to raise as much as I could.”

Despite not placing, there was a silver lining to the experience. Ms McIntosh was selected to participate in Miss Grand Australia after her stage debut, and she is now amongst the top 20 finalists. But it’s not all about winning for the Brisbane beauty. Ms McIntosh says her confidence has flourished and she is more passionate than ever to make a change. “The best part is it’s something that’s totally out of my comfort zone. “I’ve always been a very shy, keepto-myself sort of girl from being bullied in high school. “I’ve become a lot more confident, independent, and I’ve realised what I want to do in the future. “I want to be a positive influence and to be a voice for the voiceless. “People think beauty pageants are just about being pretty. “But it’s more than that – it provides that platform for empowerment and change.” To follow Sarika’s journey, visit her Instagram account @sarika.mcintosh.

Threading the zen through the needle By AnneMarie White Who would have thought behind the stark walls of the old heritagelisted Masonic Temple at the top of Brunswick Street, lives were being happily reclaimed whilst artistic treasures were being created? At the Queensland Embroiderers Guild, almost 100-year-old walls have seen two very different custodians. After falling into disrepair, the Guild bought the building in 1983. Initially the Masonic Committee rejected their offer saying that being a women’s group, the Guild wouldn’t be able to pay it off. “Well they did buy it and even paid it off in five years - not bad for a bunch of women,” Guild vice president Maggy Saldais chuckles. Since that time the original joinery and carpentry have been the home of creative embroidery for hundreds of women. Today, it not only hosts regular sewing sessions and classes, but also houses a substantial collection of over 3000 needlecraft and embroidery related heirlooms - some dating back to the 17th Century. This is now registered as a nationally significant collection. Embroiderer Heather Hayes is very effusive about the creativity and quality craftsmanship of the needlework that is produced almost every day, but like others says, “I love the sewing but really it is the camaraderie and the sharing of skills

and expertise with other women that keeps me coming back”. However when asking Cassandra Karkkainen what makes the place special, she captures the true essence that infuses the club. “I first joined when my children, who have special needs, were young,” she says. “Whilst I loved stitching, it was the calming effect that coming to the Guild had on my psyche that made me come back each time. “It was like a comforting balm.” Others agree, with the common thread being the tactile nature of sewing combined with the creativity of design and the mental attention to a detailed task creates a mindfulness space that is compelling. Guild president Nicole Detering agrees. She is a practising psychologist who has published a journal paper on the effectiveness of embroidery on relieving stress. She refers to research that shows the links between mindfulness and embroidery are beneficial to mental health and should be encouraged. Referencing other research that sees artists and makers drawn to a state of mind that resembles that of a meditative level, Nicole says, “I was delighted to see scientific literature supported that theory as I see it every

day in our Guild”. Nicole has always loved stitching. She whispers that her husband’s enduring first memory of her was of a young woman doing cross stitch whilst eating chocolates. She has now progressed in her own embroidery skills and is also taking the Guild out to the people. “I now don’t eat and sew together!” she says. “Embroidery is for everyone. “We have members from 18 years old to ladies in their mid 90s in our group. “We do have a couple of men and we also run school holiday classes for young children, encouraging them to stitch with patterns of their favourite

heroes like Star Wars or Minions. “Several of our members are so keen they travel over two hours each way to enjoy the friendship of fellow embroiderers. “We also have several members with disability who relish the inclusive creative endeavour.” Karen Jarnet, who is legally blind, says, “I love needlework just like all the other stitchers and by using a magnifying glass and an adaptive threader I am doing fine point work and loving it!” Embroidery, once the leisurely pastime of genteel ladies in parlours, has now become popularised - being endorsed by the young Royals. Kate Middleton’s lace embroidery on the sleeves of her wedding dress was a tribute to the flowers of the United Kingdom and seven years later Meghan’s veil carried embroidered floral emblems of the Commonwealth. As I leave the ladies stitching, chatting and smiling, it is very obvious that they are creating delicate and beautiful cloth pieces; but it is the sense of quiet friendship, peacefulness and calm that resonates most deeply. www.embroiderersguildqld.org.au Mother’s Day Fair, April 28, 149 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley.

How Can We Help You Downsize With Ease?

Ask the downsizing specialists Claudia Marchand & Pauline Karatau

LD

SO

Our expertise has developed through a combined 40 years working in real estate during which time we have assisted many people to down size when relocating from a large family home to a smaller property. As mature agents we have empathy and patience. We assist with planning and decision making. Every week we help singles, couples and families with working out the value of their homes and creating a plan to relocate. It may be an urgent move or it may be a 12 month plan - or longer. It doesn’t matter this is what we do. Having downsized ourselves we appreciate how daunting the process can be and how much work is involved. There are many things to consider: finances, health, location, lifestyle, family and friends. We don’t claim to know everything or to do everything but we can certainly direct you to the right people who can help as we are very familiar with the various facilities and services available to take the stress out of downsizing. Yes we are real estate agents and ideally we would like you to entrust us to market your property when you are ready for a lifestyle change. Our point of difference is that we go above and beyond just listing and selling. We help and co-ordinate in getting your home ready for sale. Through our experience we have gained knowledge and we are able to share a lot of advice and direction as well as a network of service providers and trades people we have worked with over the years and are happy to refer you to.

6 Hollins Crescent, New Farm “We were delighted to work with Claudia and Pauline on the sale process. They gave us great advice on the presentation and marketing of our home, kept us fully informed on buyer reactions and followed up regularly with likely buyers. The result was a well attended auction and a successful sale.” Peter & Philomena - Sellers Testimonial

= SUCCESS!

The sale of 6 Hollins Crescent, New Farm is a classic example of the above mantra. With five registered bidders the property sold under the hammer at Auction for a price the sellers were very happy with. This result is yet another indication that the Brisbane market is resisting the southern downturn and house prices are continuing to grow with new figures revealing they have hit a record high for the 26th straight quarter. BRISBANE’S EXECUTIVE RENTAL LISTINGS

RAY WHITE & LIVING HERE – AUCTION UNDER THE STARS Tuesday night saw roughly 200 people gather to watch how the Brisbane market was performing at the end of the first quarter. A light sprinkling of rain cooled the humid afternoon as I commenced proceedings with the first auctions. The night began with former Block contestants Michael & Carlene’s vintage caravan ‘Bumblebee’ selling prior to auction for $24,000.

With the following properties selling, and many more with spirited bidding now under negotiation, we can proudly announce the sales of: · Bumblebee - $24,000 · 266 Moray St New Farm - $1,268,500 · 73 Chester St New Farm - $2,000,000 · 186 Evelyn St Grange - $930,000 · 2/32 Mitre St St Lucia - $510,000 · 21 Leslie St Nundah - $542,500 · 12/309 Bowen Tce New Farm - $365,00 · 78 Orchard St St Lucia - $975,000 Tuesday’s auctions were one of the most exciting we have done in recent times. We saw some very strong bidding on a number of properties with others already well in to negotiations from offers we received prior to the auction. We detoured slightly from the script and elected to disclose the current offer level on a number of properties to give buyers a clear view of their competition. This was very well received. Below are the bids that were disclosed on the following properties, which outlined the current negotiating level: · 2505/45 Duncan St West End $1,350,000 · 17 Locke St New Farm $1,650,000 · 8 Naroo St The Gap $640,000 · 4/20 Bowen St New Farm $340,000

“We are dealing with an interesting market. We have strong buyer interest in most of our properties, but the market sentiment can vary dramatically from buyer to buyer,” said CoPrincipal Matt Lancashire. Piecing these sales together is taking more time than in a more consistent market. We are seeing good sales through the office, with well published record prices achieved and coupled with our strongest March sales in recent years. This is being fueled from a stable base of buyers who are optimistic about the Brisbane Market.

150 James St, New Farm JUST SOLD $1,180,000 I did plenty of research to select an agent to sell my property in New Farm, finally choosing Beth Leach. My aim was to find someone intimately familiar with the New Farm real estate market, but who also had well-above-average integrity and openness in an industry not perhaps renowned for it. Beth has fulfilled my aim, along with her colleague Anthony Oddo. Beth has provided calm, professional, intelligent service, excellent communication, and .... a great outcome for the sale of my property. If you’re looking to buy or sell in New Farm, I would definitely recommend contacting Beth. - VENDOR

DEVELOPING GREAT HOMES IN GREAT STREETS IN NEW FARM.

We love New Farm. We live and work here. New Farm offers a great range of homes and apartments but being one of Brisbane’s oldest suburbs and very appropriately safeguarding our beloved Queenslanders, the opportunity for a 100% brand new home is rarely available. Accordingly we are very excited to introduce our Moreton Street collection as our next project.
