130th Annual Meeting & Business Luncheon Features Keynote Speaker Henry B. Wainer The Chamber’s Annual Meeting and Business Luncheon is an opportunity to join other business and community leaders and celebrate business people working together for the future of Greater New Bedford. The 130th Annul Meeting will take place Nov. 10th at the Century House in Acushnet. Held annually in November, the luncheon’s keynote speaker presents an interesting and inspiring presentation focused around business growth. The program also includes the election of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, recognition of outgoing board members, and the presentation of several Chamber and community awards. Henry B. Craig Jesiolowski has served as President of Saint Anne’s Hospital since 2010. During his tenure, the hospital has earned state and national recognition in numerous areas of care for both quality and safety. Jesiolowski presided over an unprecedented level of construction and service line expansion at Saint Anne’s, including the Center for Orthopedic Excellence and private rooms across the hospital. During this time, Saint Anne’s has also developed formalized partnerships with key area physician groups, including PrimaCARE and Hawthorn Medical Associates, while enhancing the hospital workplace culture. In his new role, Jesiolowski plans to implement similar strategies at Holy Family Hospital.

Mrs. Fonseca entered military service in June, 1949. She served in the U.S. Air Force as a Corporal in the Supply Division, beginning in Denver CO, and eventually in Langley, VA.

New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee Developing Public Policy Agenda By: Ian Abreu

Joe Michaud Appointed to the Economic Assistance Coordinating Council Dartmouth Attorney Joseph L. Michaud has been appointed by Governor Charlie Baker and approved by the Governor’s Council to serve on the Massachusetts Economic Assistance Coordinating Council (EACC). The EACC is charged with administering the Economic Development Incentive Program (EDIP) which is designed to encourage business development and business expansion in economic target areas through the use of state tax incentive programs. First utilized in 1994, the EDIP is now the largest new job generating program in the Commonwealth. It works through the qualified use of tax incentives and credits to businesses that encourage expansion and job creation and retention. I am pleased to join with the Governor Baker and the EACC in promoting economic growth and job retention in the Commonwealth. I am humbled by the Governors confidence in me and hopefully I can be a strong voice for south-

Our advocacy efforts are designed to fulfill seven core priority areas: economic development, education and workforce, energy and the environment, public infrastructure, regulatory reform, taxation, and transportation.

As such, the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, for the first time in its 130 years of existence, is developing its first ever public policy agenda, designed to not only engage our members, but to also state our advocacy mission loudly and clearly.

The seven core priority areas and public policy agenda are currently under analysis by the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee. Once the seven core priority areas and public policy agenda is approved by the committee, it will then go before the Chamber’s full board of directors for a final vote for adoption.

The award was announced by Governor Baker at the September 28th Massachusetts Advanced Manufacturing Summit in Worcester. The funds will be awarded to the WIB by the Executive Office of Housing & Economic Development (EOHED) in October 2016. The grant funds will serve between 2430 individuals. The project will provide employer recognized manufacturing training similar to the EOHED grant awarded last December concluding in June 2016, which included Applied Manufacturing Technology Certification, Lean concepts and Welding. 14

The WIB will again look to collaborate & partner with local employers to supply a pipeline of new workers trained and aligned to today’s manufacturing culture. “The last training group went to work immediately and helped area businesses to remain competitive and address the need to replace an aging workforce. We are thrilled at the possibility of building on the success of the last EOHED grant”, said Tony Sapienza, Chair of the WIB. “Equally important is the employment income benefitting the lives of 24-30 individuals that will have a pronounced impact on the local community,” Sapienza reported.

“Given the success of the first EOHED training, we anticipate aligning resources again with our partners at the Greater New Bedford Career Center (GNBCC), Bristol Community College (BCC), Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School (GNBRVTHS), the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP) and local employers to recruit, train and employ participants”, said Jim Oliveira, Executive Director/CEO of the WIB. According to Brenda Francis, President/ CEO of New Directions Southcoast, Inc. (NDS), the GNB CC operator, “We look forward to again providing a quality experience for the target population of
