The schedule fills too quickly to distinguish the people and places that add color to our lives or inspire us to greater things. We get into our cars and move through a day in routine fashion, even in a city as independent and quirky as Austin. With the immeasurable wealth of experiences that the city has to offer, our lives can become more than a bit ordinary. In an effort to add a spark of spontaneity to the coming season, Austin Lifestyle Magazine went in search of the extraordinary. What we found, within driving distance of our city limits, is a host of stories worthy of the eccentric SHAWN LIVELY personality of our town. Be it a unique spin on something so common as eyeglasses or the interest points on the far reaches of the compass that demand attention, Austin Lifestyle Magazine has unearthed more than a few rarities among the routine. And amid the jewels that a typical Austin regimen may not reveal, we managed to find a gem that is seldom seen, in our town or any. ALM encountered a diamond among the hills, and we spoke with a person worthy of the title, ‘hero.’ It isn’t a term used terribly often, and we dare not employ it lightly in the modern day. But, south along I-35 or west toward the Pacific Ocean–though she is known to make frequent visits–we managed to meet a woman who inspired us with her passion, her story and her innumerable good deeds. When the Hollywood celebrity pool seems to produce few role models, Eva Longoria stands out in significant contrast to all that we’ve come to expect from the faces that grace most magazines. So, in that vein, we encourage you to venture away from the ordinary, this season. Try something new and shake up your fall. With all the distinctive experiences that Austin can provide, there’s no reason to settle for ordinary instead of extraordinary. On a 45 acre tract that is surrounded by Balcones Canyonland Preserve on the back and two miles of Lake Travis on the front, nestled in the hills and over the water, is Lake Travis Zipline Adventures. Ranging from 250 feet to over 2,000 feet, LTZA has a total of 5 lines, each one leading up to the the final trial: a pair of racing lines 20 stories over the lake. “We came up with the idea for a zipline on the land that we owned on Lake Travis from a friend who help design and build a zipline in another part of Texas,” John Shipley, co-owner of LTZA said. “Once the idea set in, we went to an ACCT (Association of Challenge Course Technology) Conference in Minneapolis Minnesota. The ACCT is recognized governing body for safety standards for ziplines. We felt we met all of the criteria they were suggesting for a successful zipline location.” LTZA tour guides go through a 40-hour training course sanctioned by the ACCT and must obtain CPR minor first aid certification. Updated trainings through monthly meetings and one-on-one instruction are available as needed to ensure safety for all tours. “Our tour guides come from various backgrounds but all share a love of the outdoors,” John said. “Most are part time. Some are students while others have multiple part-time work. We strive on hiring tour guides that are upbeat, outgoing and enthusiastic about adventure guiding.” Once adventurers hike across the land to get to the ziplines, which has been untouched since habited by the Indians in the area, and complete their LTZA experience, they can hang out at one of the private beaches. In the near future, LTZA plans on offering paddle board and kayak rentals, as well as food and beverage options for adventurers. “LTZA viewers should know that we work hard to make sure that every participant has the ‘Adventure of a Lifetime,’” John said. With 2 locations, Con’ Olio was built on the “taste before you buy option” where patrons can sample more than 50 types of olive oils and vinegars straight from the Fusti containers before purchasing the full bottle. “Our store name has dual-meanings: Con' (short form of our last name Conarko) and con olio also means ‘with oil’ in Italian,” Jeff said. “Ever since tasting really high quality oils and vinegars as we were travelling in Europe, it has been our mission to not only bring them back, but to educate people about the differences. “ Jeff and Tabatha Conarko opened the flagship Con’ Olio in the Arboretum in 2009. The downtown store followed on May 10. “We choose our products based on taste and quality,” Jeff said. “We source our products from high quality single estate producers from all around the world. They are chemically tested for both quality and authenticity and we have complete traceability of our products to single batches.” In addition to the merchant aspect of Con’ Olio, classes (such as Olive Oil 101 and Balsamic Vinegar 101) are offered regularly. Attendees can learn about the history behind the product, production details, differences in grades, health benefits and culinary uses. “What is really impactful to people is that we also get to taste these amazing products and do a side-by-side comparison with the grocery store grade products,” Jeff said. “Once people taste the difference, they never go back to the other stuff. We also pair our oils and vinegars with different types of food demonstrating how these products can complement and transform as they blend together on the palate.” America is at the forefront of a revolution in the olive oil industry right now, as there are no USDA or FDA standards and testing that protects consumers from the mislabeled and adulterated olive oil flooding the market today on our grocery store shelves. “We are part of a group lobbying the Federal Government, starting with the California State Legislature, to implement Federal Marketing Orders to protect consumers and help level the playing field for quality extra virgin olive oil producers,” Jeff said. Follow The Trend One of the newest airstreams to hit the Texas roads is Trendy Trailer, Tessie Watson’s mobile boutique of Longhorn Fashions. Longhorn Fashions was founded in 2010 as an alternative Longhorn shopping option for customers worn from the Co-Op styles and t-shirts. “Right around the time that I was launching Longhorn Fashions in 2010, my sister and I saw an article on a designer who turned an old potato chip delivery truck into a boutique on wheels,” Tessie said. “We thought it was a genius idea because it allows you to get out and about and meet customers without being tied down to a retail space. I have always wanted to open a store, but I knew I needed to get creative in how I went about it in an economy that is still recovering and this article got our wheels turning. Fashion power houses like Alice & Olivia and Kate Spade are having a blast with their mobile boutiques and it’s an even better opportunity for someone with a smaller business that really needs the space for less!” Tessie searched for an Airstream trailer that she could afford on Craigslist and other outlets, looking at a dozen before she found “the one.” She thought the size was perfect and it was already in Austin. The Airstream was gutted when she bought it, but had a lot of holes in the ceiling, body damage and was just really dirty overall . It took her a full day just to clean it out, patch it up and get it ready to paint. As a fashion outlet, even a mobile one, the aesthetic must be respected. She decided on a turquoise color because she loves pairing turquoise with burnt orange when creating an outfit (and it just happens to be her favorite color). The grey floor pulls in the color of the Airstream and complements the burnt orange and white apparel that fills the racks. Steel pipe stands in place of wardrobe racks because Tessie knew it would be sturdier than traditional racks and went with the overall chrome, industrial look of the Airstream. She searched Marshalls, Target and other discount

stores to make the decor as inviting as possible on a budget. “My favorite things I found are the burnt orange and white lamps that I got at Marshalls for $24, but I am also crazy about the shabby chic necklace holders, such as antlers, knobs and key hooks that I ordered off Etsy,” Tessie said. “I love supporting other small business owners through Longhorn Fashions and Etsy makes that so easy!” Longhorn Fashions and the Trendy Trailer stemmed from Tessie’s love for fashion and her devotion to The University of Texas. She is a Longhorn graduate and studied Corporate Communications with a Business Foundations minor. “I was a Texas Spirit at UT, which solidified my love for all Texas sports and the University of Texas as a whole. I am proud to say that I have attended almost every home game since 2006 and my closet is 70% burnt orange.” And, when asked if there was an emotional rationale for choosing an airstream versus a permanent storefront, Tessie fesses up. “My family loves a good road trip or visit to a state park, so we have always been in awe of the glory of the Airstream and the idea of the Americana nomadic spirit behind one. Whenever we passed by one on the highway on a road trip growing up, there was a pause made by everyone in the car to pay reverence to its chrome glory. I looked at a lot of different trailers for this project, but am so glad I got the Airstream! I know my fellow UT graduate, Matthew McConaughey, is a fan of Airstream life as well. Hopefully he stops by to see what I've done with the place!” The Trendy Trailer will be parked at Bevo Boulevard by the Bob Bullock Museum during the home games this football season and will traveling around Dallas, Houston and San Antonio for events. Brings a New Taste to Cedar Park Just outside of Austin, residents of Cedar Park now have a new restaurant to stake their claim on. In an area that has been dominated by chain restaurants, Cedar Park can now enjoy upscale dining close to home without having to brave the commute into restaurants that, until now, have been reserved for Austin. Co-owner Jason Schnurr’s concept is simple and airy: comfort food with a twist and an environment where parents can relax while their kids play. The drink menu in itself is impressive. There are over 15 cocktails, both classics and specialty drinks including “The Thump” made of watermelon vodka and fresh watermelon. The wine menu is lengthy, touting bottles, wines by the glass and specially made wine flights for tasting. None of this is surprising as Chef Alejandro Duran (most recently from Malagas tapas restaurant) is the sommelier and suggests wine pairings on the menu. The food offerings are upscale versions of classic meals. The waitress suggested two of her favorites: shrimp and grits or chicken fried steak. The menu offers everything from salads to sandwiches, rib-eye to grilled portabella mushroom. Live music can be heard on the outdoor stage Thursday through Saturday. The two playground areas allow kids to run around while their parents kick back and have a drink at the large community tables outside while listening to music. Fresh products, a solid menu, a known chef and a new concept for Cedar Park have already proved to make Reunion Grille a hit. The large trees surrounding the restaurant will make for a picturesque fall when the outdoor stage is sure to be surrounded with customers.

To Hit the Domain Swedish clothing store H&M will make its debut in Austin in fall 2012. Blending fashion forward pieces with everyday staples has made the company a darling for women, teens, children and men alike. As the second largest global clothing retailer, H&M has over 2,600 stores worldwide. Over the past year, the chain has finally opened stores in Texas, starting in Dallas and most recently opening in Houston. Austin finally gets a chance with the store opening at The Domain. It will go into the space previously occupied by Z Gallerie, as well as the office space directly above it. Lauren Krumlauf, Area Director of Marketing for The Domain said, “We know that H&M will be a significant complement to our retail mix because of the excitement and traffic they deliver.” In a town that includes a large population of trendy college students, H&M should be a harmonious fit as they provide fashion-forward clothing and accessories at a wallet-friendly price. “We constantly strive to tailor our tenant mix to our diverse market and know H&M will be a welcomed addition,” said Krumlauf. If the openings of the other Texas locations are any indication of the success of H&M in Austin, expect to find a store teeming with people who want to find their own mix of great style at a fair price.

Bangers on Rainey Street Take a simple concept: beer, sausage and live music. Find a space that fits the vibe and has enough space. Hire the best possible people. It sounds easy. And owner Ben Siegel sure makes it look easy. But, with about a two hour wait for a table during the opening weekend, Bangers Sausage House & Beer Garden on Rainey Street can’t possibly have it that easy. Every day, Bangers serves up at least 30 kinds of sausage with 80% of it made in house. Pair it with one of the 104 craft beers on tap (ask any of the staff for a suggestion – Siegel has them beer certified) and grab a seat at one of the community tables either inside or outside near the stage. There you have it: well thought out food; cool location; good music. After moving from Austin to LA, he saw a beer and sausage garden open in downtown LA. He told himself that if that kind of place could open in the middle of a city full of people on a diet, it could sure as hell make it in Austin. So he quit his job and started living out his dream. He sticks with simple: great food, good beer, fun environment. I suggest you try it for yourself. Relax and enjoy yourself with people who work there and really want to be there. Siegel realized life was too short to not do something you love. And Bangers stands as proof that he has found that something.

Rocket Electrics Cruising Our Way Through Texas Summertime

It was 100˚ outside, as per usual in this unforgiving city of ours, and I was riding a bicycle around Town Lake during the mid-afternoon pedestrian rush hour, cruising blithely ahead of panting, sweatstained passers-by. I brushed a cool appendage lightly against the bell of my bicycle, awaiting the “brrrring” in response from my biking cohort. I h a d n eve r ex p e r i e n ce d such a casually relaxing bike stroll. In the movies, bike ridingmeets-sightseeing is always so romanticized, but the brutal temperatures of Austin don’t allow for any of that—what a supposedly pleasurable bike ride brings to mind, to me, is perspiration and parchedness. Ro cket Ele c tri c s , A us tin’s premier electric bicycle sports shop, was my saving grace for an afternoon outing of lackadaisical fun without the burden of heat exhaustion and without having to sacrifice the things I love most about Austin—the city’s natural, outdoors beauty and accessibility. E-bikes, which I had been completely unfamiliar with prior to my excursion, are bicycles with electric motors. The bikes that Rocket Electrics uses, contrary to other shops and dealers, are exclusively “bred,” you could say, to be e-bikes. That is, the ergonomics, the economics, the structure and the efficiency of these vehicles are entirely cooperative and intentionally systematic. Other bikes, for example with on-bike motors added as an afterthought, can be bulkier and less efficient, not to mention slower and less chic! Some of the major benefits to electric biking as opposed to other motorized vehicles are that e-bikes can be taken anywhere a regular bicycle can be taken— but at a consistent speed that can reach up to 20 miles an hour for 20 or more miles! These otherwise off-limits locales include trails, parks, etcetera, which forbid other forms of motor vehicles. Also, e-bikes are easy to take home and charge. The batteries are removable and can be plugged into most wall outlets. “The quiet power of electric bikes means that a rider can accelerate out of a complete stop efficiently and move with the flow of traffic,” explains Rocket Electrics owner Nicole Zinn. ”Austin is a perfect place for electric bikes.” She continues, pointing out that “an electric bike is the best way to move through the city efficiently.” With festival roadway congestion, already

accommodating bikeways, tedious but short-distanced commutes and expensive parking, this city has adapted conveniently and responsibly to facilitate and encourage the biking culture. The comfort cruisers, which are the rentable bicycles, have cushioned leather seats and wide-set handlebars. The Wall Street Journal online, in fact, took the proper liberty of referring to these Pedego brand cruisers as “The Couch on Wheels.” And the great thing about these “couches” is that all e-bikes operate as regular bicycles, providing the option to motorize the ride. Rocket Electrics is not only a daytime bike rental shop and store, but also an event headquarters, of sorts. Together, General Manager John Dawson and Zinn have a guiding function for their business: to keep more butts on bikes! So, Rocket Electrics has planned out several tours and services to keep people e-biking. Included in the fun are the Austin Foodie Tour, the Lady Bird Lake Tour and the Austin Live Music Capital of the World Tour, whose proceeds benefit the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. Rocket Electrics is a vendor of biking supplies, equipment, safety gear and other supplementary goods and accoutrement, as well as e-bikes themselves. Cruise on over to the shop at 1608 East Riverside Drive to give e-bikes a whirl. bout one year ago, I started paying really close attention to trends I was seeing in travel. It became glaringly obvious to me that the Caribbean was the “it” travel destination. I was hearing about resorts in Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Turks & Caicos. But, the location that caught my eye was Four Seasons Nevis, tucked away on the glorious Caribbean coast of a quiet, tranquil island called Nevis (pronounced knee-vis) in the West Indies. St. Kitts is the neighboring island to Nevis, where you fly into and then you are ferried across. You might initially be intimidated when looking at flights from Austin to Nevis, as many of them will show you a 24-travel time. However, if you get up to Dallas, you can stay at a DFW hotel, fly out the next morning to Miami and then straight into St. Kitts. (TRAVEL TIP: Look at American Airlines flights and book a night at the Best Western Plus DFW Airport Suites, bestwesterndfwsuites.com. This small hotel sits right next to the airport entrance. They’ll let you keep your car onsite for the small fee of $10 for 5 days, then shuttle you to the airport and offer you complimentary breakfast.) We decided that the only trip more fun than us going on a couple’s retreat by ourselves, was to invite good friends to go with us and

create a “double-date vacation”. Summer is actually low season in Nevis and winter is considered high season due to so many Americans escaping the cold weather to visit this tropical climate. I have to admit that one of the things I was most looking forward to experiencing was the boat ride from St. Kitts over to the Four Seasons Nevis pier (pictured above). This initial experience did not disappoint. We boarded the double-decker yacht, were offered unlimited cups of Rum Punch and were able to stand at the front of the vessel and ride the waves on the 35-minute journey that delivered us to the resort pier. The next experience is one that I believe really separates Four Seasons Nevis from the five-star resort pack. At the resort pier, each guest is personally met by a staff member who escorts you to your room. There’s no stopping by the front desk and waiting in a line. They appreciate that you’ve traveled a long way to get to these relaxing shores and want you to begin your vacation as soon as possible. They ask you to drop by the front desk at your convenience to leave a credit card for incidentals. While at the pier, we were also greeted by the resort’s general manager. “Four Seasons Resort Nevis blends casual island charm with a


refined style,” says Andrew Humphries, General Manager, Four Seasons Resort Nevis. “Guests will enjoy Nevis’ beautiful natural environment and the island’s rich history and culture. What remains the same year after year are the warm, friendly people that define Nevisian hospitality.” The lush landscaping of this tropical paradise is immediately settling. The grounds are immaculate and many rooms look out upon the dark blue Caribbean ocean bordered by the resort’s private beach. You have your choice of swimming in the cool Caribbean waters or choosing one of three resort pools (Reflection- adults only, Ocean and Garden Pools). If you choose to relax at the beach, you really must pamper yourself by reserving a Beach Cabana for the day. These cabanas offer shade, a mini fridge stocked with complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, a TV (although who wants to watch TV when you’ve got a view like that!), and a flag system to alert wait staff to your every need (such as ordering drinks and food). Renting a cabana might feel indulgent, but if you’ve traveled across the ocean to Nevis, you owe yourself a few gluttonous perks.

As we ferried back across the deep blue Caribbean waters to head back home, my feeling was one of extreme thankfulness that I was able to experience such a beautiful destination as I savored the expansive views one last time. f you own and operate a landmark venue for escaping the breakneck pace of life within the city limits, it stands to reason that your escape should be that much more of a hidden paradise. If your view from home loses to the view you have at work, which is replete with an applause-worthy sunset nearly every day of the week, your home had better be spectacular. Luckily enough for Beau Theriot, his home more than delivers an oasis all its own. Tucked away in Dripping Springs, Theriot’s ranch is a respite that even The Oasis, his much-celebrated destination for sunsets and romance in Austin, can envy. The house and the ranch it sits upon bear some resemblance to Theriot’s Lake Austin overlook. Scenic vistas surround the home, washing the backdrop in the verdant

green that makes the Hill Country so magical. White Austin stone accentuates the walls of the house, as well as the surrounding landscaping. The driveway has the same character as Mediterranean streets, albeit modernized ones; and palms litter the home front, even peeking out from a balcony. And all of it sings of The Oasis– until the dynamic is turned completely on its ear. There is water here in the Hill Country estate, but one could not gaze at its waves and undulations below from the balcony above. Instead, a rooftop pool provides an overlook for the rest of the spacious property. Sitting poolside benefits from the presence of a hammock that inspires one to immediately consider a purchase. The colors of sunset don’t arrive at a scheduled time here, awaiting

applause. Instead, the rich orange hue and sea-foam green hints that would mark a picturesque sunset on the water are on permanent display as accents to the house itself. Corrugated metal walls add a still more modern spin to the villa concept, and the entry sports an antique door that whispers of adventures and stories that have passed under its arches. There is a lighter, livelier feeling to the interior than The Oasis can boast, if one can fathom such a thing. The entire space is open and inviting, awash in ample natural light from every angle, including a skylight that spans the length of the spacious main room. A frequent visitor to The Oasis and its neighboring retail establishments would no doubt recognize a number of decorative items that manage to

tastefully and daringly accentuate the home. Zebra prints add a flavor of wildness to the general mood conveyed by the space and the industrial accents indoors echo of the corrugated metal outdoors. Stone gives way to wood in the bedroom suite, however, adding warmth to the restful end of the house. Light still bounces from every angle in the daytime, but when night falls, the view of sky and stars takes over and casts a glow on every surface, which spills into the spacious and impressive bedroom. The sense one gets is that the room invites the night and its accompanying rest, by sheer design. And design, along with the natural beauty it incorporates in every facet of Theriot’s home, dominates this particular oasis, offering a brilliant escape. ALM

Austin Children's Shelter Gala Embrace the era that inspired The Great Gatsby and roar back to the ‘20s and ‘30s at the Austin Children's Shelter Gala, “Putting on the Ritz.” This exciting evening is slated to raise more than $600,000 to support Austin Children’s Shelter and its work on behalf of neglected, abused and at risk children and youth. The evening will transport guests to this bygone era from the moment they step in. Flappers and feathers, glitzy decor and vintage cars–even appearances by Charlie Chaplin, Mae West and Al Capone–create an atmosphere that feels like a step back in time. “Putting on the Ritz” Co-Chairs Shannon Schmitz and Andrea Valko, along with their volunteer committee, have spent months planning this incredible event that will feature a vaudeville bill of entertainment, including the fabulous burlesque stylings of the lovely Mandy Lauderdale and the Nash Hernandez Orchestra, to keep guests swinging on the dance floor late into the night. They encourage guests to “Put on the Ritz” with their own ritzy cocktail or black tie attire. Lending an authentic air to the evening will be two stunning vintage cars on display from Munday Automotive Collection–a 1931 Cadillac Dual Cowl Phaeton and a 1931 Chrysler CG Imperial. Gentlemen and daring ladies will enjoy the cigar lounge with a casino game, a fine liquor tasting and live entertainment. The Austin Children’s Shelter Gala is the non-profit agency’s largest fundraiser of the year. ACS provides a safe home and supportive services with emergency shelter and longterm residential care for children, youth and young adults from birth to 22 who have experienced significant loss, trauma, abuse and/or neglect in their lives. Comprehensive services of supportive and protective care, evaluation and counseling, medical treatment, after-school tutoring,

early childhood intervention and academic enrichment activities help restore the physical and emotional health and well-being of children and youth with histories of severe and intergenerational abuse and neglect. Emergency shelter is provided for children from birth to 18 years old in a stable, safe and home-like environment. The ACS staff teaches positive coping skills and responsible decision making, while giving nurturing support and guidance for each child, helping them to transition to the next phase of their lives. For older teens and young adults who will “age out” of foster care without a permanent home placement, ACS offers a Transitional Living Program. Youth live in a cottage dedicated to this group for a few months or up to four years. Here, they learn the skills necessary to make a successful transition to independent living while receiving the same services and support as children in other ACS programs. The Teen Parent Program offers a temporary home and training for adolescent mothers (or fathers) in foster care with their infants and toddlers. Parenting education can be a powerful tool to help break the cycle of abuse so teens learn about childhood development, nutrition, positive discipline and parental responsibilities as well as how to create healthy bonds with their children. ACS also provides respite care, giving temporary, non-routine relief for parents and legal guardians of children with emotional or developmental disabilities for up to 14 consecutive days. The Greater Austin Walk Now for Autism Speaks is entering its eighth year and will be held on Saturday, September 22 at the Dell Diamond. Doors open at 9:00am and the walk is a 1.5 mile course through the adjacent Old Settler’s Park. Step-off is planned for 10:30am and everyone is invited to join in the festivities. In 2005, Autism Speaks was founded by grandparents, Bob and Suzanne Wright, after their grandson Christian WALK NOW FOR was diagnosed with the condition. The couple AUTISM SPEAKS faced confusion, contradiction and a divided autism September 22 community when they sought answers; and they decided Dell Diamond to try to unite the forces under a single, unified voice, thus forming Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks is the world’s largest science and advocacy organization for the condition, which currently impacts one in every 88 children born in the US. The prevalence statistics, released by the CDC in 2012, represent a 1000% increase in the past 40 years. Autism is now a public health crisis that demands immediate attention. Autism Speaks has made it their goal to change the future of everyone who is struggling with an autism spectrum disorder, including improving the lives of those who help care for them. Autism is marked by impaired social behavior, communication challenges and repetitive movements or intense patterns of interest. Because it is a spectrum condition, people with autism can be lightly or profoundly impacted. Whereas some individuals may be unable to speak, others will have mild to extreme behavior challenges and still

others will struggle with a myriad of co-morbid medical conditions. Whatever the severity of diagnosis, families dealing autism face immense stress socially and financially. Despite autism’s prevalence, autism suffers greatly from a critical imbalance when it comes to funding availability:

• Leukemia: Affects 1 in 1,200 / Funding: $277 million • Muscular Dystrophy: Affects 1 in 100,000 / Funding: $162 million • Pediatric AIDS: Affects 1 in 300 / Funding: $394 million • Juvenile Diabetes: Affects 1 in 500 / Funding: $156 million • Autism: Affects 1 in 88 / Funding: $79 million

To date, Autism Speaks has funded $173 million in scientific research and granted $3.9 million to communities. The planning committee hopes to clear the ambitious milliondollar mark in combined funds raised by the Greater Austin community. Their hope is to have accomplished this significant fear upon the completion of this year’s Greater Austin Walk Now for Autism Speaks event. This year’s poster child for the national Autism Speaks movement is an Austin-area kindergartener named Max who attends Rutledge Elementary School in Leander ISD. He has, through the efforts of many, been fully integrated into his peer group and benefits from the aid that the Austin autism community can provide, rather than hindered by apathy or a lack of community awareness. His plight and the plight of many others like Max can only benefit from an active participation in events like the Greater Austin Walk Now for Autism Speaks. One thing I really miss is being able to visit the museums and immerse myself in the art and culture. I could get lost walking around the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Aristotle’s observation reminds me of those brush strokes that could bring a tear to the eye. It is not what you see on the surface, but the details that allow art to move the human spirit. In September, the American Diabetes Association is bringing the passion and feeling of the Met, MOMA and the Guggenheim to Austin! Ball gowns and black ties will make this much-anticipated event both sophisticated and classy. Featuring a silent and live auction with items such as UT-autographed memorabilia, yoga packages and California getaways, this event has something for art lovers, sport enthusiasts and travel buffs alike. Guests will be treated to a delicious meal, cocktails and dancing. Because Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World, the event will feature a live band, which will bring a different aspect of art to life. My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys…Until Now

D

espite what dominates summer cinema with its comic book inspirations and special effects laden scenes, Hollywood is quite an odd place to find a genuine hero. Instead, it is far more likely that one will discover quite the opposite, what with the antics of most movie stars proving themselves the exact opposite of the admirable characters they play in scripted roles. So, how exactly does a hero emerge, be they a fiction or a reality, from such an unscrupulous and conniving a place as Wisteria Lane? The answer is that Desperate Housewives, for all its venom and vitriol, hid a picture of heroism among its cast. She is 37 years old, proudly hails from Corpus Christi, Texas, and stands slightly over five feet tall. But, considering her heart, her character and her ambitions, the shadow the woman casts stretches from her roots along the Texas coast to the City of Angels on the West Coast, and from present day to far into the distant future. Make no mistake; Eva Longoria is a hero with a legend and legacy worthy of Texas. Her face, at an instant, commands attention. For as much as she has been featured on magazine covers (and now, proudly, on Austin Lifestyle Magazine’s own), it is difficult to find someone who doesn’t recognize her. She has been voted as one of the world’s most beautiful women by no less than three publications over multiple years, and the recognition is undoubtedly warranted. With her looks and charm, she helped glue America to a television and make Sunday nights a guilty pleasure for millions of viewers. But, with Desperate Housewives coming to a close in May of this year, one might wonder what Eva has been doing to keep busy and why

we’re unabashed in proclaiming her heroism. To begin, since her turn as Gabrielle Solis ended, she has not stepped out of Hollywood’s spotlight. “I have a couple movies coming up,” Longoria states from Los Angeles, where shooting schedules and a few other pursuits have kept her rooted for a while. “I’m filming a new movie in November with Sarah Jessica Parker and a big ensemble, called Married And Cheating. And I have The Truth coming out with Andy Garcia and Forrest Whittaker–it’s a political thriller that’s going to be out in the fall,” she continues. And, if those projects aren’t enough to grant one the title of ‘busy,’ she remembers another small enterprise of hers. “I’m also producing a show called Ready For Love for NBC. It’s a dating show and it is going to blow any other relationship show out of the water, it’s so good.” In the event that one were tempted to believe her involvement as an executive producer was minimal, she goes on to describe the show, exuberantly and in some detail. “We have a guy from Dallas, a guy from California and a guy from Miami looking for love and we’re using matchmakers to pair them up,” she says. “It’s just a new and innovative way of pairing them up, using the Internet and matchmakers. This is how people are dating today, so we wanted to reflect that in a dating show.” So, like any good hero, Eva is busy juggling demands on her time, operating in multiple venues and multi-tasking in her highly visible career. These pursuits, however conspicuous and enviable to the watching public, are only the tip of her endeavors. Longoria is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at Cal State, adding yet another iron to the fire and another demanding activity to an already crowded schedule. “I’m obsessed with academia and I’m obsessed with education,” Eva admits. “Everybody always asks what word describes me best and I

always say curious. I’m just so curious about the world and curious about the global community we live in. When you’re curious, you tend to be thirsty for knowledge, constantly.” Her passion for knowledge is only paled by the motivation behind the pursuit. A graduate of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Longoria not only wants to continue to learn, but hopes her pursuits will serve as a beacon to guide others toward a similar path. “I always think you have to live by example, and you have to do model behavior for people to want to imitate. I started to get my Master’s when I was doing Desperate Housewives, so people can say, ‘If she can do it, doing Desperate Housewives and filming and everything else,–and I got it done, then you can get it done.’” True to heroic form, Eva is peering still farther into the future, well beyond serving as an example through her personal goals in education. Longoria is cementing a legacy by championing women’s access to the same education she has sought and ensuring that those resources will

be accessible to those who are unaware of their potential to seek higher education. Her foundation, yet another of her active projects, is born of a singular calling. “I would hope that my work in the Latino community and the Hispanic community would inspire future generations to pursue higher education,” she declares. “That’s really what the Eva Longoria Foundation is about. That’s a legacy I would like to leave behind for a long time—the informational resources and programs that give access to higher education for Hispanics all throughout the country.” These aren’t words and actions that ring typical of the Hollywood elite and they aren’t necessarily well known or expected, which is a testament to Longoria’s humility. But, as her influence has grown, she has taken on still more missions related to her heritage and her own experiences. The humble hero has even set up a network of heroes, aimed at addressing another community oversight, this time one that hits even closer to home for the star. Longoria explains, “Eva’s Heroes is the first charity I co-founded

with Christiane Perkins, who was a special ed teacher. We found a need for an afterschool program in San Antonio for the special needs community. My sister is special needs and so I grew up in that community in Corpus, where she always had activities. She always had opportunities to stimulate her mind outside of school and we were really grateful for all of those programs that were available. When I moved to San Antonio, I noticed there was a lack of them. Our program, Eva’s Heroes, drives afterschool programs, summer programs and monthly activities, like dances and bowling and dance clinics and a Spurs game and a Silver Stars game. We just try to keep the young adults stimulated and involved in the community.” Add to this her position as a co-chair of the President of the United States’ campaign and you have a recipe for more than a busy woman, much more than a magazine cover girl and infinitely more than her roles or her time in the spotlight would ever suggest. Instead, what one is left with is the picture of what a true hero looks like. She is selfless with her time and her influence. She seeks to right wrongs, regardless of their

origins. And all of this while being indescribably humble, speaking with immeasurable pride in the causes she champions and the people she partners with. Her travels take her far away from home to accomplish the aforementioned goals, much like the prototypical heroes from comics and legend. There are Tex-Mex restaurants in LA that have opened up that could not sustain. I’m a ninth generation Texan and Mexican-American and it’s so reminiscent of my culture and how I grew up.” “I always go Mi Tierra, every time I’m in San Antonio, I go straight there from the airport–there and Whataburger,” the hero in mortal clothing confesses. “Everybody does In-N-Out over here and I don’t like it,” she continues. Certainly, there are many libations to be had along East Sixth and its neighboring drives and some of the trends and destinations may have become increasingly familiar; but there is still much to love, both old and new about this amalgam of cultures: D. Zhi Tea Goodbye coffee at Starbucks and hello oolong tea. Swing by Zhi Tea on Bolm Road and gain some wisdom (Zhi). Jeffrey (Doctor Oolong) and Candice (Priestess of Tea) pride themselves in making small hand-crafted batches of tea that is 100% organic and Fair Trade. Have a cup at the shop or take some home to enjoy. E. Justine’s Known for the amazing food (the soup is a must have), Justine’s is also home for live music and events. These unique gatherings include frequent visits by national artist, Rocco DeLuca, along with Austin Film Society sponsored screenings and the more than occasional party that defines “legendary.” Recently, their “Paris is Burning” soiree generated photos and tales that rival the best that Studio 54 ever bore. F. in.gredients Forget plastic bags. This “bring your own container” grocery store is a new addition to the east side (opened August 4). West The Hill Country calls to almost every Austinite. But, get too far west and the civilized and quirky personality that grants pride to all Austin residents gives way to desolate roads and fewer attractions. But, there on the borderlands, there is fusion of a different sort, blending the independent sensibilities that define our city with the taste for finer things that marks Westlake, Lakeway and the rest of the western front. For a western swing, try the following: G. Mizú Despite the presence of nearby lakes–those which the grueling summer has not yet claimed–Austin is very much a landlocked city. There isn’t a coastline or a river passage from the Gulf to our city limits, and yet Mizu, a beautifully apportioned restaurant with a breathtaking patio, has seen fit to offer the finest the ocean has to offer. They serve sushi that has almost no business being as fresh and delicious as it is, so far from its point of origin. Furthermore, the quality is only bested by the value of the menu. Call it a hidden diamond, we’d keep this gem to ourselves, but it would be a disservice to our audience. H. One World Theatre Once you make it down the winding Bee Caves Road (think past Mopac and 360) and up the hill, this gorgeous venue overlooks the Barton Creek Hill Country and the vast rolling hills to the southwest. Make this a backdrop for a music venue that plays host to some of the world’s finest musicians, devoid of Austin’s typical run-up-against-the-noise-ordinance clamor. Instead, One World hosts more soothing and pensive artists and places them in an environment that showcases all they have to offer. I. Hudson’s on the Bend Hudson’s on the Bend is one of Austin’s classic staples, even though its RR 620 location is considerably out of the heart of Austin. There are few places in the area that offer game in such an exquisite presentation, and it stands as a landmark to Austin’s appreciation for genuine fine dining, without losing that Austin humility.

South Oh, you crazy Southerners, replete with your artistic sensibilities and oddball antics. What would Austin be without you? The South is rising again, it must be said, with many established Austin businesses opening branches near or below 71. Alamo Drafthouse-Slaughter Lane has helped to usher in a southern migration pattern that shows no sign of slowing as the city keeps growing. While below the border that is 71, be sure to visit: J. Live Oak Market South Austin is hiding an impossibly nostalgic secret, right along Manchaca and 71. Step into what looks like a normal convenience store and you will find that the proprietors have gone to all lengths of inconvenience to provide the most unique drinks and snacks to any patrons. Craving a peanut butter and jelly soda? They’ve got it. Want a snack that could never be found in a Texaco or Valero? Try local popcorns from Reel Popcorn. They make sure that their selection is anything but boring and you will do nothing but benefit from it. K. Cafe Malta When you hear, “southern Mediterranean,” it likely sparks thoughts of Casablanca, Tunisia and cobalt blue beaches, rife with seafood on offer. Although Cafe Malta cannot instantly transport you to that cerulean coast, their menu, far more extensive than any restaurant south of 71 has any right to serve. Combining the seafood/olive/pita dishes that mark the Mediterranean, Cafe Malta makes the coast as accessible as a trip down Mopac. The Panzotti alone are worth the adventure. L. Galaxy Cafe You don’t have to drive to Clarksville or the Triangle to fix your Galaxy craving. Located on Brodie & Slaughter, Galaxy Cafe’s south location offers the same menu as the central locations, including brunch! Dive into your favorite burger and fries (we opt for sweet potatoes, if you must know), and know that your food is just as natural and granola-chic as any of their other locations.

A

s any true Longhorn fan can attest to, UT games aren’t just games. They are experiences. From tailgating to cheering on the team from the stands to celebrating afterwards, Texas supporters participate wholeheartedly in all the events. Gone are the days when a burnt orange t-shirt or a Longhorn emblazoned jersey is sufficient enough for the bevy of activities. Texas women, in particular, want to be on trend and show their support with carefully chosen outfits and accessories that show not only Longhorn pride, but their unique fashion sense. Attention has now turned to locals who help fill the gap between the UT Co-op’s famous game day apparel and scouring the racks searching out signature pieces. Enter Tessie Watson Crow, owner of the e-boutique Longhorn Fashions (longhornfashions.com) and proprietor of The Trendy Trailer. Tessie first went to college at LSU where she noticed girls got dressed up for the games. They wore dresses or skirts in team colors to show their support, which seamlessly flowed into an outfit to go to any kind of event. Tessie moved to Austin shortly after to go to UT where the desire to open her own store burned in her mind. After college, she worked in marketing to figure out the best way to approach her idea of getting quality pieces out to the public. In 2010, she opened Longhorn Fashions. Using local designers, former UT students and designer friends, she finds and sells burnt orange, white and Longhorn inspired clothing and accessories. The website is easy to navigate and has clear pictures of all the items she sells. From a sweet burnt orange polka-dotted dress to the Zilker Park white beaded necklace, Tessie is in touch with what her peers want to wear around Austin during football season. (She is proud to note she hasn’t missed a UT football game since 2008.) Up to this point, Longhorn Fashions has best promoted itself by having trunk shows and pop-up shops during the fall. It is here that Tessie spreads the words about the website and sells items to those in attendance. But Tessie is stepping it up for fall 2012. With the help of her husband, she has renovated a 1973 Airstream Trailer that she can take to games to sell her wares. She plans on setting up either on Bevo Boulevard or in the ESPN Zone where she is prepared to reach more customers who want something on point to show their Longhorn pride. Fall will also bring about more changes for Longhorn Fashions. She plans on getting back to having some exclusive pieces like she did her first year, giving people more of a one of a kind look. Tessie plans on having an extensive

selection of some of the more popular pieces so people can find a fit that works best for them. Fall will also allow Longhorn Fashions to spread into some men’s apparel that goes beyond a typical t-shirt. She is looking into items that have Bevo or the Texas logo somewhere, but allow men to show some of their own fashion sense while out supporting their team. She sticks with ideals that are important in Austin: using a high percentage of local designers and items made in the U.S. Tessie says there is no age limit to being a Longhorn fan—or shopping at Longhorn Fashions. Gay “Sugar” Isber of The Sugar Factory (gayisber.com) brings a different perspective to fashion for the Longhorn fans. A jewelry designer and self-proclaimed lover of beautiful things, The Sugar Factory is filled with handmade jewelry of all shapes, styles, colors and sizes. Her newest foray, however, touches a bit closer to Austin, a place she’s called home for the past year and a half. She shows me a large tray, jampacked with Longhorn inspired jewelry. Large cuffs emblazoned with burnt orange beads and crystals; a long gold chain with an actual horn dangling from the end, surrounded by orange beads; a necklace of large gold rings with orange crystals in a multitude of shapes and shades cascading down the front. Some pieces are large and demand attention while others show a bit more subtlety, easily adding fan color and flair to an outfit. Having partnered with Swarovski crystals as well as various gem distributors, Sugar takes great materials to develop one-of-a-kind jewelry at a fair price. Although she’s been featured in magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar as well as recent spots in Italian Vogue, F Magazine, Editorial and Society Diaries, Sugar continues to stay down to earth and in tune with what the public is seeking out. Her father, along with several other family members, is an alumnus of UT. She sees the passion Longhorn students and fans have for their team, which led her to create the pieces in her newest collection. No matter your style, Sugar’s desire to produce beautiful, sparkling pieces gives Austinites the chance to dress up their game day outfit any way they choose. Whether a simple, coppery aluminum bracelet or a bold necklace that drapes across the entire chest, any Longhorn fan can dress up their outfit with Longhorn inspired jewelry from The Sugar Factory. Austin is a melting pot of all kinds of people with all sorts of style. rowing up, we all have big dreams for our future. We see ourselves as rock stars, astronauts, actors and presidents. But, for many, those dreams turn into childhood fantasies and we make way for the more practical careers that we have today. Unless your name is Granger Smith. Raised in Dallas, Texas, Granger grew up in a non-musical family, but had visions of being the cool kid playing the guitar as he sat around a campfire with friends. So at age 14, Granger set out to teach himself how to play using a book and an old guitar that he found gathering dust in his parents' closet. E i g h t e e n y e a r s l a t e r, Granger has become one of the most talked about Texas musicians in the country music scene. Granger has quickly sung his way into the spotlight, much like his country music idol, George Strait. A fan of Strait’s music, Granger attended his first George Strait concert at Texas Stadium in 1995. Blown away by the atmosphere and energy that exuded from the stage, Granger fell in love and the rest was history. “I just couldn’t believe that people were traveling around in buses and playing music for a living,” he said. “I just knew I had to do it.” And do it, he did—playing his way through College Station while attending Texas A&M Universit y, and eventually making it all the way to Nashville at the age of 19. After several years spent in Nashville, working alongside some of the best producers in country music, Granger returned to the Lone Star State, determined to make it big as a Texas musician. He set up a recording studio in his home, and uses that as a safe haven to record all his music. While Granger has been a fan of country music all his life, he doesn’t use today’s radio hits as a basis for his songs. For Granger, music is not about what will land him at the top of the country charts, but about what sounds best to him. “Country music is really all over the place right now,” Granger said. “No one really knows what direction it’s going in, so I try to build the sound that works best for me. If it’s not making an impact right now, hopefully it will soon.”

Although a talented singer and songwriter, Granger doesn’t credit his success to talent. Rather, he says his success has come from staying in the game for so long and continuing to pursue a dream. “A lot of guys that were way more talented than me–singers, songwriters, and guitar players–have quit music simply because life got to them,” Granger said. But rather than let his life experiences get to him, he uses each one as inspiration. Most notably were Granger’s three trips to Iraq in 2007, 2008 and 2009 to play for the US troops stationed there. These trips, originally meant to bring a taste of home to the troops overseas, quickly turned into so much more for Granger. He said that seeing how each song impacted the soldiers was a huge turning point for his music, and he now pays careful attention to how each of his lyrics will connect with someone. W i t h h i s S o ut h e r n upbr i n g i n g , u nend i n g a mounts of ta lent a nd dedication to philanthropy, all topped with a face that would make any country girl swoon, it seems that we’ve found the perfect g uy in Gra nger Smit h. But if you’re looking for something a little more downhome, fear not. Much like Garth Brooks’ stint as Chris Gaines back in the late 90s, Granger Smith seems to be leading a double life, finding success both as himself, and as Earl Dibbles, Jr., his Southern bumpkin alter-ego. What began as a joke between Granger and his two younger brothers has since turned into a hit with Granger’s fans, who now demand that he play an Earl Dibbles, Jr. song at the end of every show. Granger says that Earl Dibbles, Jr. is a character born to represent the funnier side of himself, not to poke fun at anyone else. “We’re not trying to stab modern country music or rednecks [with the Earl Dibbles, Jr. song or persona]. It’s just not that deep of an issue. If anything, I’m making fun of myself and having a good time,” he says. Despite what happens with his alter ego, it seems that Granger is in the country music scene for the long haul. Have we found the next big country star in Granger Smith? Time will only tell, but we sure did find a talented Texas-born musician who loves what he does, and is ready for the world to know. ALM

Next to his eyes reside the opening lines to On the Road: “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved.” Glass growlers bearing Charles Bukowski’s swaggering profile happily chugging a beer are on display for purchase to be filled with delicious potables. Traces of these and other Beat poets and writers are artfully branded throughout 263 Restaurant and Provisions, the concept of residential neighbor Dennis Liddy. When Liddy was in his twenties, a close friend gave him his first copy of the seminal Beat text On the Road, by Jack Kerouac, and it struck a definitive note with him. Liddy kept digging around for more inspiring texts and found Charles Bukowski along the way, whose works would continue his studies. These writers have been his heroes, and Dennis Liddy has adopted their personal mantras as his own. Those that are not native Austinites (myself included…) may not be aware of the history behind the 263 prefix (as in 512 263-XXXX) and the reputation that the area attached to this code garnered over the years. If you lived west of Capital of Texas Highway you were

a 263, east you were a 327. Little details like this have monumental importance in differentiating subcultures in a numbers-obsessed town. “Back in the day, if you were a 263, you were considered to be in the boonies, with the riff raff and the trailer trash. No one wanted to be a 263,” said Sarah Hannon, general manager of 263 Provisions and a sixth generation Austinite. “I have lived on the east side and pretty much all over Austin. But this is definitely my favorite area to be—Cuernavaca Street,” admits Liddy. In this current age, the area that was once known as the 263 is nowhere near being considered the boonies or riff raff. Time loves to play tricks in this town. Beautiful robust houses set atop well landscaped hilly lawns that snake through the catacomb of the Austin Lake Estates neighborhood with Liddy’s quaint establishment staking its claim in the middle of the horseshoe-shaped community. This is an area where one does not lock their front door and golf carts are driven to visit your neighbor. A rare small town vibe in the heart of the bustling city of Austin reigns strong with these locals, reminiscent of an Austin once past. It was no surprise that Liddy decided to use the 263 prefix in naming his store. Embracing the dishonorable reputation and “owning it” as Liddy likes to say. One can’t help but think there’s

something very Beat about it. “We have become more grown up. There is something to be proud of here,” Hannon gleefully exclaims about her home. “Our schools are better. People want to live here. This is the place to be now.” The clandestine location of the 263 as a local watering hole and marketplace is quite popular considering the closest grocery store is within a 15 mile radius. Much better than being stuck with a Valero, which was previously the usual quick stop for everyone in the area. The market’s shelves are stocked full with the locals in mind with many Austin and Texas native products. Eggs come from chickens living on the property as well as fruits and vegetables from their own gardens. Growlers are for sale and can be filled with a variety of draft beers, or with kombucha from Buddha’s Brew. Despite the 263’s humble establishment and laid-back charm, Dennis Liddy is no stranger to the business of food. Having never attended culinary school, Liddy seems to have done all right for himself. “I went to Over the Stove University,” Liddy reflects. Not to toot his own horn too loudly, but his background includes working with Robbie Day at the San Francisco St. Bar & Grill in New Mexico, Austin’s own West Lynn Café in the early 1990s and The Bitter End thereafter, Granite Café, and the well-known Escalera Café in Santa Fe.

“I may not have a piece of paper from the CIA. It does not matter to me, but the natural knack and passion for food and flavor is something that cannot be taught.” And regulars will agree with Liddy that he has this natural gift. Before opening the 263, Liddy owned a landscaping and construction company and would drive by the future home of his marketplace, wondering if something could be done with the location. Then in May of 2012 he opened the store and did quite well. Later in June, the restaurant came to fruition and his new area for congregating the neighbors. The Progressive Dinner Evolves With Austin Over a year and a half ago, the Accidental Epicurean took a tour of Austin’s hottest new restaurants and created an ideal progressive dinner for the adventurous diner. Enough praise has been heaped upon the fried chicken on offer at the daughter restaurant of the Beard Award-winning mainstay that is Olivia. However, in a move that echoes of the accidental creation that led to Uchi’s divine Shag Roll, Lucy’s LUCY 'S FRIED CHICKEN Fried Chicken has fused their indescribable 2218 College Avenue batter with an appetizer that every Southern (512) 297-2423 home can claim. It seems simple enough, to make a deviled egg and drop it into a quality batter and then into a deep fryer. What happens when Lucy’s executes this, though, is far beyond words. It is an experience to bite into a spice explosion that is, at once, both foreign and all too familiar. It is a sinful way to begin the meal, which is appropriate for such a decadent pursuit. He sa id he did n’t have a ny sy mptom s i n pr e v iou s workout s a nd t hou g ht m a y b e he w a s ju s t st r ug gling t h rough t he rout ines. “If you’ve t ra ined w it h Fred, you k now where you lie dow n a nd put your feet up if you’re feeling dizz y. I wa s t here,” Hello told me. Fina lly on September 1 2, 2011, Hello took h im self to t he doctor, since the pain wasn’t going away. His ca rdiolog ist told him he had a 90% blockage in t wo of h is a r teries a nd needed a double by pa ss. A f ter put t ing in so much ha rd work, he st ill had to have hea r t surger y. Four days after his successful surger y, Hello was released from the hospital. Doctors and nurses at the Heart Hospital of Aust in were sur prised at h is quick recover y. While his doctor wa s impressed w it h h is shape going in, it wa s st ill ex t raordina r y t hat Hello wa s able to bounce back. In fact , he stayed in t he hospita l t he lea st a mount of t ime a ny of h is doctor ’s pat ient s who under went sim ila r procedures. Five days later, Hello wa s able to wa lk a mile w it h Sa ssa ni. Hello’s w ife Julie sa id, “ Had he not been exercising to t he deg ree he had been a nd doing t he mea l pla n, I don’t t hin k he would have made it .” Since t hat time, Hello has continued to promote his ow n
