Young business inspiration Inspiring the next generation of employees and helping them get a better understanding of what jobs entail is one of the roles of the Education Business Partnership (EPB) in West Berkshire.

Chamber update

www.westberkschamber.tvchamber.co.uk

Always looking for a different slant on the networking scene, the West Berks Chamber enjoyed the hospitality of Chamber member Mercedes Benz of Newbury on a very warm July evening. Some 60+ delegates heard from the Chamber on its activity across the Thames Valley against the backdrop of luxury cars and expert advice. The events programme continues throughout the year. The local Chamber has also provided valuable input into West Berkshire Council’s Economic Development Strategy and was pleased to represent the business community at the Newbury Vision Conference in June. The local Chamber Council are keen to support commercial regeneration in and around Newbury town centre building on the success of the Racecourse development. West Berks Chamber is now in the twitter world, follow us at https://twitter.com/ westberkschamber For more information about the West Berks Chamber of Commerce please call 01753 870500 Gary Cranford Business Manager West Berks Chamber of Commerce 4

The EBP are always on the lookout for employees who are willing to give a small amount of their time to talk with young people and perhaps support some interesting and enterprising activities in their local schools and colleges. We would particularly like to hear

from people in their 20s or 30s who would like to share an insight into their work for an hour. You can be from any profession or at any level within the business. What we need is enthusiastic individuals interested in talking about their role, skills and career path.

If you are interested then visit http://www.ebpwb.co.uk/i-want/get-involved/

New West Berkshire Youth Cabinet A new West Berkshire Youth Cabinet will be established this autumn. Please don’t miss out. Make sure your school and your young people are part of the action! Berkshire Youth have received funding to set up and support a new Youth Cabinet in West Berkshire. This means that young people across West Berkshire, with our support, will have the opportunity to champion and increase awareness of youth voice, support local/national campaigns and make a positive difference to their communities.

Breathtakers OB Trust supports children with the rare and life limiting lung disease, Obliterative Bronchiolitis (OB). Currently there is no cure for OB and many children are misdiagnosed with asthma. Some children wait as long as ten years for a correct diagnosis which impacts on long term prognosis and quality of life.

ABC to Read With a decline in the percentage of Berkshire children achieving the expected level for reading in Key Stage 2, local charity ABC to read is keen to help schools and families in the county. They are waiting to place volunteers in schools that are requesting support, particularly in West Berkshire, but more volunteers are needed. Marcia Rowlinson from ABC to read says “It is all too easy to blame schools but teachers work very hard to help children achieve. Our volunteers provide the 1:1 support that schools and families just cannot match because of all the other demands on their time. It is often just the undivided attention and encouragement from an interested adult that can make all the difference.”

Robin’s top tip

ABC to read provides both initial and ongoing training for its volunteers to ensure that they are giving the best possible support. Volunteers would be working within a local school, ideally twice a week in the afternoons. The next new volunteer training course starts in Slough in September and Reading in October and anyone interested should contact Marcia Rowlinson on abctoread@btconnect.com or 0118 9511336 for more information. If you are unable to volunteer, donations towards the charity’s work can be made via http:// localgiving.com/charity/abctoread or by texting READ21 £1/£2/£5/£10 to 70070.

Help Prevent Vehicle Theft Did you know that last year in West Berkshire 11% of thefts from vehicles happened because the owner left their vehicle unlocked. Not to mention those where property had been left on display! Don’t make it easy for thieves – secure your vehicle when not in use and remove all valuables.

business focus

Many major business owners have cited networking events as one of the most helpful tools in growing their business but it is only helpful if you do it right. It is important to keep the whole reason you are there at the forefront of your mind.

how to

network When choosing an event make sure that the target market, the location, time of day and frequency works for you. Debbie Miles from Athena Network says “Being able to attend regularly is key, as people need to get to know and trust you before they refer or work with you.”

Be prepared You may be required to give a brief presentation on your business. Bring your business cards and make sure you exchange cards as much as possible so you can contact them in the future.

When you are there When you enter the room the hardest part is breaking the ice. Either approach someone you know or head for the area where most people have congregated. A good ice breaker could be asking about the networking group. Have they been to this particular event before? You have a 20 second pitch ready which sums up who are and what your business does. Debbie adds “As well as an elevator pitch, have a strap line summarising what you do in one sentence, make it memorable and if possible, include an ‘emotion’. In our group we have a florist who loves to “make people happy” and a photographer who “shoots people for a living”. “Be a good listener and you will be amazed how much you find you have in common. Being helpful to other networkers by introducing

people to each other will also make you more memorable.”

Afterwards Any agreements you make during the event need to be carried out. After the event, send an email to those you met saying it was a pleasure to meet them. Personalise these by adding something you discussed at the event. Do not mass spam them all.

“There may be people in the room who you could work with, enabling you to offer a more complete service to your customers.”

Message from Athena At the Athena Network, as well as networking for new business, our aims are to educate, support each other and to build alliances.

PLEASE MENTION BUZZ WHEN RESPONDING TO AN ADVERTISMENT

I caught up with Kate as she returned from the Dartington Hall Ways with Words Festival, where the television presenter had just given a book talk. The idea for her new book Humble by Nature came about when Kate and her husband bought a small holding in Wales and heard about a nearby tenanted council farm that was going to be sold off. In an effort to keep the farm tenanted, Kate bought the farm and it is now home to new tenants who live there, farm the land and also work closely with Kate and Ludo on their ‘Humble by Nature’ business based on the farm.

there is always an element of exploration and discovery that I find very exciting.” In July, on BBC2, Kate presented the three-part series “Wild Shepherdess” where she visited three countries and explored their shepherding techniques which have existed for thousands of years.

A career in television On her return from Africa, Kate moved to London and tried to break into the

the female face of nature programmes and Kate believes there is one man in particular who inspired her, “I shouldn’t think there is a single person interested in the natural world who hasn’t been inspired by David Attenborough. He is the most astonishing broadcaster of our time. His longevity and astonishing appeal across every age and class is remarkable. I have been lucky enough to meet him and he was one of the most courteous and delightful people I’ve ever

Kate the explorer Kate’s parents moved from Wimbledon to Bray in Berkshire and Kate lived there until she left home aged 18. Kate did not want to continue her schooling and decided to educate herself through travelling, “I went travelling across Africa for a year as I had a yearning to go and experience something different and Africa seemed to be about as different to Berkshire as life could be! I started in South Africa and ended up in Egypt.” Travelling is a huge part of Kate’s life and work, “I love being somewhere new and unfamiliar. Africa is very entrancing and there is an area of Afghanistan called Wakhan Corridor which is a truly special part of the world. With every journey,

Despite Kate’s connection with the outdoors, owning a farm has never been on her “to do list” even when she lived in the Berkshire countryside as a child. “I lived next door to a farm and I think that is what inspired my interest in nature. In a way I didn’t really notice the wildlife because it was so much a part of what I grew up with. I had a good old fashioned childhood of being encouraged to go outside whatever the weather and make my own fun.” television industry as a researcher, “I liked the idea of making television programmes and I did this for a very long time although I started off as a runner making tea. Then in the late 90s, I was working on the Holiday programme and they asked me to do a screen test. I agreed knowing that I would be rubbish. A few weeks later I was asked to present for the Holiday programme and that is how it all started.” Kate & Ludo at the farm

In 2003 Kate joined Bill Oddie and Simon King to film a series of programmes called “Wild in your Garden”. It was successful so they continued to film the following years until it eventually became “Springwatch”. Her genuine interest in nature and the outdoors made Kate

overall is difficult, “I’ve been really lucky that there hasn’t been one thing that stood out above the rest in my career. I loved a series I did for the Open University called “Rough Science” where I worked with some astonishingly brilliant scientists in some challenging parts of the world but then diving in the Amazon had its challenges as well. I loved doing domestic stories on Springwatch. No one could imagine that 4 million people would tune in to learn about the fate of a Blue Tit but they did. Then there was working at Longleat where the first thing I would do at 8am would be to bath an elephant.” I asked Kate what were her biggest career achievements and her response was,“I think one of the loveliest things as a result of what I’ve done was a little boy came up to me once in a supermarket and asked if I was the Springwatch lady. He then asked if he could talk to me about the hedgehog in his garden. That made me realise what an incredible responsibility being on television is and it can be an immensely powerful force for good. It introduces people to things that aren’t within their reach and as far as our natural world is concerned we need people to fall in love with it and understand what conservationists are trying to do. I was really proud of that moment because that little boy could be the Attenborough of the future.”

Off screen Kate is very involved in national and worldwide causes that help the environment and the developing world. She is currently President of the RSPB and is founder of the Stuff your Rucksack charity (www.stuffyourrucksack.com) where travellers can find small organisations near to where they are travelling that are in need of something such as a school that needs a world map to teach geography. They can

10

check the website beforehand and pack what they need. Kate also wants to make people more aware of the environment and the things they can do just by taking

a proper look at the space around them, “Whether you are in a flat or a house, that outdoor space can provide food or habitat or both for a whole host of wildlife.”

“I loved doing domestic stories on Springwatch. No one could imagine that 4 million people would tune in and learn about the fate of a Blue Tit but they did.”

They have been running the farm for just over a year with tenants Jim and Sarah and their livestock. Kate and her husband’s own livestock includes various breeds of pig, goats, chickens, ducks, geese, rare breeds of sheep and lots of dogs. The farm also holds various courses for anyone to enjoy including pig keeping, bee keeping and hedge-laying.

The book and the farm In her own words, Kate describes her book as a love story about reconnecting with the countryside. Since leaving Berkshire, Kate has spent most of her time in London but her roots were always in the rural world, “It’s not an autobiography which you can only write if you have led a full life. It is about the joys and perils of owning a farm and the livestock and how rewarding it is to be connected to the land. “I am not a farmer but to me it was really important that the farm remained a farm. We could provide the farm and the farming tenants could provide the expertise.”

Kate’s husband, television producer Ludo Graham, shares Kate’s enthusiasm for reconnecting people with nature, “His support has been invaluable and I certainly would not have thought about doing this without him. He is much more practical than me though. I wanted to get donkeys and he asked why if I wasn’t going to turn them into salami. He proved himself right as I realised donkeys are tremendously hard work and not right for a Welsh farm.”

Kate continues to do more television work but is mainly focusing on the success of the farm and ensuring its future. Kate will be appearing at Henley Literary Festival to talk about her book ‘Humble by Nature Life, lambs and a dog called Badger’, out now and published by Headline.

Peter Cox found his place in the music industry when he met fellow musician Richard Drummie. 25 years on, one of the biggest duo acts of the 80s is still performing with a brand new album and UK tour.

Go West

Peter grew up with the influences of reggae, motown and blues rock. An undisputable talent for singing led to Peter performing in bands from a young age and whilst working in the Twickenham area, Peter read a review of another local band, “I thought if they are our competition we should go and see what they are like. I brought a demo tape with me and Richard asked to hear it.” It was the start of Go West but it took some time before they could secure a deal. Rejection did not stop them though. “We were in love with the idea of making an album so we listened to music, absorbed influences and carried on.” When it did happen for Go West in 1985 they rose to the top quickly, “It was exciting to get the publishing deal and be paid to write songs. We spent it all in a week on a car and musical equipment so we could keep going.” Their first single “We Close our Eyes” reached Number 5 in the UK charts and their music video for the song 14

also brought them a lot of attention. Directed by Godley and Creme, formerly of 10cc, the video includes Peter Cox with a giant wrench and dancing wooden dolls, “We knew that we were working with two of the biggest directors and we had meetings to talk about wardrobe but they hated everything we showed them.

I had no camera experience and Godley and Creme were either side of me shouting directions. I would say that was one of the hardest day’s work I have ever done.” Recognition came in 1986 when they won “Best Newcomer” at the Brit Awards, the only award to be chosen by the public, “No matter how insecure you feel, when people say you are the best thing which has happened musically that year it is a great feeling.”

“The day the video was shot I spent an hour in make-up being made to look like a mechanic but I didn’t know anything about the big wrench.

Go West became particularly successful in America where their first music video was being played frequently. They soon moved out to Los Angeles and scored a Top 10 US Hit with “King of Wishful Thinking” which featured in the movie Pretty Woman.

Going solo After working together for a while the duo’s relationship began to suffer as they each longed to pursue personal projects, “When you have a difference of opinion you will compromise but it is also nice to be able to make all the creative decisions.” Location also caused problems. As Peter grew to love America, Richard could not wait to be back in the UK. In 1994, Peter relocated to America and stayed there for six years working solo and with other musicians. One of his favourite collaborations was with

producer Peter-John Vettese on his first solo album, “Peter came to my house in California with several start points for songs which were actually demos half way there. He was just so fantastically talented.”

Go West returns In 2000 Peter’s father became ill and he returned home to spend time with him. Peter wanted to keep working and

with a demand for Go West he and Richard soon started working together again. They have performed at the Henley Rewind Festival several times and have just completed their new album called “3D”. Peter is also halfway through his latest solo album which he hopes to be completed before their UK tour which kicks off in October.

Children love music but music training is not just for future musicians, says Liisa Henriksson, founder of Moosicology. “Studies show that children who learn music perform better in mathematics and reading - and they even develop better friendships.” “For parents who want their child to reach their potential, start music training before the age of seven, preferably as a baby or toddler.” Liisa hails from Finland, a country famous for its school success. “The PISA international assessments have brought the Finnish pupils’ success to everybody’s attention. They all do early music training between ages 0-7.”

The Abbey celebrates Half a decade as an IB world school with record-breaking results. The Abbey School, Reading is once again celebrating world-class International Baccalaureate Diploma results.

This year’s average points score of 39 points puts the school in the premier rank of all schools offering the Diploma worldwide. For context, conditional offers for Oxbridge start at 38 points, and to achieve an average score at that level is a testament to the dedication and hard work of students and staff over the two years of the IB Diploma programme. This year’s IB students have secured places on prestigious courses at Imperial College, London, UCL, Bristol University and others.

The Abbey School has offered the IB Diploma for more than half a decade, with students achieving outstanding results every year. Mrs Dent, Acting Headmistress, explains, “The intellectual challenge and international diversity of the IB Diploma provides an exceptional foundation for a globalised future world of study and employment. We are proud of how impressively our girls have performed in this challenging qualification, both this year and in our first halfdecade as an IB World School.”

laptops

Laptop computers can offer the power of a desktop with the flexibility and freedom to use them where you wish. There is an astonishing range of products available, ranging in price from a few hundred pounds up to two thousand. As with all technology purchases it is essential to do your research first – work out what you need, what you are willing to pay and what you can do without. The cheapest option is a netbook. They are smaller and lighter than laptops, but do not have the same range of features. They are perfect if you want to browse the internet and send emails whilst you are buzzing around. The keyboard and larger screen can make them easier to use than a smartphone or tablet computer, such as an iPad. The next step up is a cheap laptop. These are suitable for everyday tasks such as word processing and web browsing, and are good for computer novices. They are portable, but may be bulky. You may have to pay more if you need to store more data on the computer (such as movies) or use it for more demanding tasks (such as gaming or editing video). Sleek and light designs also come at a premium.

l

Use this quick guide to help you understand laptop lingo and work out which one is right for you:

Operating system : Windows is the best-selling operating system. Macs are easy to use and good for graphics and publishing, but can cost two or three times as much.

l Memory : this has a big influence on how fast the laptop will run. Aim for at least 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM. l Storage

: the hard drive is where programs, files, data and documents are stored. Look for 320 GB, or 500 GB if you want to store lots of videos, music or photographs.

l Processor

: a dual core basic processor should come as standard. Processors are normally made by Intel or AMD. AMD is cheaper; Intel processors get more powerful as the model number increases.

l Battery

life : most laptop batteries will last for five or six hours. More expensive models may go for longer, but invest in a spare if you are often out for the day.

l Screen

size : a 15-inch display is fine for most users. Choose a larger screen for playing computer games or using design software.

l

Weight : hold it in your hands if you can! Remember, you’ll be carrying the laptop around, or sitting with it on your knee.

l Controls

: Make sure the keyboard and trackpad are comfortable to use and consider getting a separate mouse.

l

Drives : some laptops do not include CD/DVD drives and you may need to buy an external one.

The WinePress

Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa

With a warm and welcoming atmosphere, attentive waiting staff and an extensive 50 page wine list, The WinePress is an excellent award-winning restaurant that everyone should enjoy.

Donnington Newbury RG14 3AG For bookings 551199 contact 01635

Considering that this restaurant is owned by Sir Peter Michael of the Vineyard, the endless wine list did not come as a shock. I began with a glass of 2011 Agiorgitiko, a Greek white wine with a light fruity taste that accompanied my starter of creamed mushrooms on a toasted brioche with a poached egg - a first class starter with deep, well-balanced flavours. For mains, I was lured by the lamb, a hearty dish served with exquisitely rich dauphinoise, matched with a perfect Chilean Malbec. I also tasted another main course, a sumptuous paupiette of lemon sole with a fricassee of grape. This was top end technical cooking from Head Chef Kelvin Johnson who has held his brigade to very exact standards in his 23 years at the WinePress.

Popular for business, golf breaks, weddings, locals and wine-lovers, the snugly tucked away restaurant is the perfect setting to wind down after enjoying the delights of the local area or relaxing in the hotel spa.

Win

We visited the WinePress restaurant this month. Having

received a warm welcome from the friendly staff, we browsed through our menus which reflected the 2 AA Rosettes. At a reasonable £28 you can choose from the delectable three-course ‘Market Menu’. This menu took me by surprise and offered an attractive choice and all served in wholesome portions.

Donnington Valley and Buzz have teamed up to offer two people the opportunity to experience the delights of the hotel for themselves. Enter online at www.localbuzzmagazine.com and you could win an overnight stay with dinner and breakfast as well as a Leisure Club passport for 2 (full prize list online).

For dessert, I had a chocolate torte and the Australian pudding. Every mouthful of food was simply sublime and the huge variety of wines available made this experience just that little bit more amazing. The only improvement to the atmosphere would be a few candles to complement the mouth-watering cuisine and excellent service. The WinePress is definitely a local restaurant to be added to your diary if you are looking for quality and value for money with a great setting. 27

The dreaded night cramps Cramp is a common and usually harmless condition where muscles suddenly become tight and painful. Mostly cramps occur for no apparent reason, but certain things can trigger them such as pregnancy, exercise or some medications. Consult your doctor if you suffer frequent night-time cramps which affect your sleep, or if you have other symptoms such as numbness or swelling.

Useful tips l

Stretch your calf muscles before bed.

l Sleep with your feet rested

against a pillow to keep them pointing upwards. l If you sleep on your front,

allow your feet to dangle over the edge of the bed so calf muscles are not tensed. l Keep sheets and blankets

loose. l Wear bed socks to keep your

feet toasty. Warm muscles are less likely to spasm.

k in h t u o y n a h t r e t f T h e y’re so I looked across the ‘long-stay’ photo wall of happy, healthy dogs that have spent the most time at the home. All were Staffordshire Bull Terriers. What was once called a “Nanny dog”, now regarded as an aggressive breed due to reports of dog attacks and exploitative owners. This has made some potential dog owners reluctant to adopt but Battersea Dogs Home are trying to turn this around and in 2011 launched its “Staffies. They’re softer than you think” campaign.

The wrong hands I was joined by Vicky Snook, Senior Rehomer at the centre, and Mikey, a playful Staffie. I wanted to find out why the breed had gone from being loved to feared, “Unfortunately people have used their strengths to manipulate the breed”, says Vicky. “Any breed can be dangerous in the wrong hands. They are also often mistaken for Pitbulls and they are not the same dog.” These misconceptions have resulted in a drop in the number of Staffies being adopted, “A lot of people worry about how they will be perceived as a Staffie owner. We have had people who loved the breed but they have received abuse in the streets for owning them.”

It has also meant that they are receiving more Staffies into the home, “We are receiving more than our fair share of Staffies. People unfortunately are using them for breeding to make a quick buck. A Staffie can have up to 15 puppies and they need homes too.” Walking through the home I noticed the Staffies clearly outnumbered the other breeds. None of the Staffies I saw appeared aggressive or noisy and only one shied away in his bed. Vicky explained that this particular dog had been attacked by other dogs in a park. The owner felt the environment was unfair on him and brought him into the shelter to find a new home.

Softies at heart Pedigree and cross breed Staffies are struggling to find homes, “Staffie lovers want proper Staffies even though cross breeds are healthier. It helps if a Staffie is crossed with a popular family dog such as a Labrador.” Vicky explains what Staffies are really like, “They are completely devoted to their owners which in some ways is their downfall. In the wrong hands someone could manipulate their devotion. They are also very active and can cope with large and small amounts of exercise.”

I asked how common it was to find Staffies who had been involved with fighting rings. “The dogs we see are bait dogs where they were the weaker opponent. Those dogs need quite a lot of time to rehabilitate.”

The campaign The campaign has so far been successful in reducing the average stay of a Staffie from 63 days to 46 days but in comparison to other dogs like the Bichon Frise, whose stay is around 16 days, there is still a huge gap. In 2012, 42% of the Staffies in their care were under two years of age. Vicky believes in these cases people bought a puppy before realising the responsibility of owning an older dog. If you are planning to own a Staffie, Vicky says you need to be dedicated to dog ownership. They are not a demanding breed but you do need to commit to a regular routine and keep a happy balanced relationship as their loyalty can lead to over bonding. This is sadly what happened to Mikey who is spending his second stay at the home. He was adopted at the beginning of the year but returned six weeks later after suffering from separation anxiety. Although the centre says Staffies make great family dogs they do not recommend Staffies be rehomed with young children, “We take in a lot of stray dogs so we do not know the full history. To protect the dog and family we recommend they go to families with older children, 8 years and above. If we have a puppy we would say they could live with young children.” Battersea will run the campaign as long as they have Staffies at the centre and they will continue to try to overturn the Staffie myths.

a good Lady Catherine and the Real Downton Abbey By The Countess of Carnarvon This is the sequel to Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey and tells the story of the beautiful American heiress who lived at Highclere Castle, the setting for Julian Fellowes’ award winning drama Downton Abbey. In this book the story moves into the 1920s and focuses on Catherine, the wealthy American heiress who married the Earl of Porchester or Porchy, as he was known. At just 19, Catherine had to learn how to organise and host the lavish banquets and weekend house parties that Porchy so loved. But things were far from perfect as Catherine’s husband gradually revealed himself to be a scandalous rogue who squandered their money and pursued silent movie stars across London. Author, Lady Fiona Carnarvon, married the current Earl of Carnarvon in 1999 and they took over the running of Highclere Castle nine years ago. Published by Hodder. Hardback £20

The Hive By Gill Hornby It is the start of another year at St Ambrose primary school. Whilst the children are in the classroom, their mothers are learning sharper lessons on the other side of the school gates. Lessons in friendship, lessons in betrayal, lessons in the law of community, the transience of power and how to get invited to lunch! This is a story of friendships, fights and feuding and that is just the mothers! Local author Gill Hornby will be discussing her first novel The Hive at Newbury Library on September 25th.

Through Jonnie Rocket, children can become adventurers too and discover the wonders of the universe. Aimed at Key Stage 1 & 2, author John Chapman has so far released three of the Jonnie Rocket books as part of a nine part saga, plus the original “The Adventures of Jonnie Rocket” published in 2000. As a child, a love of cycling and space inspired John Chapman to create Jonnie Rocket’s character. Jonnie Rocket even has his own website with information on the books and characters, fun games and a Parents Zone.
