How to market your business Whether you are just starting out or you have been in business for years, marketing is essential as it communicates your company to existing and potential customers. Without it, you could be missing out. Here is a helpful list of ways to market your business.

Appear in local media

Create an e-newsletter

Write a press release about anything newsworthy going on in your business and provide contact details of someone who can provide further information. Consider running a competition which will not only advertise your brand and company name, you will be putting yourself in front of a much wider market.

Publish a regular e-newsletter to your existing customers. It will keep you on their radars and encourage repeat business.

Design Marketing material is a representation of the quality of your business and service which is why it is a good idea to have it professionally produced. Agency fees will not break the bank or search for a local freelance designer online.

business focus

Luckily most email providers filter spam emails before they hit your email inbox, however, occasionally the odd spam email may end up in your inbox which may lead you to believe it is a genuine email from someone you know.

Carry business cards Do not ever leave home without your business cards. Make sure your business cards contain all relevant information, including any social media accounts you might have. Twitter is a great way to start networking online and gives your brand personality.

Get testimonials Nothing works better for your marketing than having a genuine testimonial from a happy client. Add testimonials to your website or marketing materials, but make sure you ask full permission from your client first.

This year we will see more dresses which offer two looks – plain gowns which can be accessorised with a lace jacket or overlay for a demure ‘day’ look only to be replaced later with a belt or sash for a heavier ‘evening’ look. Key shapes are still A-line but we will see more waisted dresses and simpler designs in delicate fabrics such as tulle and chiffon. Also growing in popularity are shorter gowns as brides opt for the less formal look and seek something a little different and personal. Look for black and white accents (very art deco) and maybe even pale pinks for the ultimate in feminine chic. By Laura Jones 10

Keeping it simple

Flowers this year are about simplicity and scent such as orchids and multi petal roses. Stocks and sweet peas are high on brides’ lists for the 2013 season. Grouping stems for a relaxed seasonal posy bound in lace or tulle. Shades of white and ivory are still the firm favourites with soft pastel muted tones. Vintage is still key with simple flowers allowing for floral prints for bridesmaids. A 1930's afternoon garden tea party seems

to be high on the 'perfect' day wish list. Budget is important and we are moving key pieces from ceremony to the wedding breakfast to allow them to be enjoyed for the whole day. Sustainable options are popular too - plants that can be enjoyed long after the wedding day is over. By Karen Sopp

A Californian vineyard, two of Berkshire's finest hotels and a hugely popular radio station are just four of many businesses Sir Peter Michael has developed during a long and successful career. Buzz finds out what drives the man behind it all.

The first thing you will notice when you walk into the luxurious setting of The Vineyard is a large glass wine vault with gently lit shelves lined with fine wines from around the world. Adding to this spectacular entrance, you can step over the see-through glass floor and look down over the wine cellar, which boasts some of the 30,000 bottles from across all of The Vineyard's cellars. This place is about wine, quality and attention to detail.

The wine vault at the vineyard

The owner of this magnificent five star hotel and spa is Sir Peter Michael, a successful businessman in the world of electronics, broadcasting and, of course, wine. Across the wall is an enormous mural that was specially commissioned by Sir Peter Michael to depict the 1976 ‘Judgement of Paris’, a story which will resonate with many wine lovers.

14

We sit down in the stylish bar area and Sir Peter gives us a brief history of The Vineyard, “We opened Donnington Valley in 1991 and The Vineyard in 1996 at the foot of a huge recession, so we obviously had a few issues. We ran it as a four star hotel to begin with but my wife and I were not happy with it, so one day whilst in California, we set about designing a five star house where women would feel comfortable to dress their best for dinner. We decided that a ‘restaurant avec chambres’ would be the theme, making the restaurant more important than the rooms. It has been huge fun and our guests have loved it, and as nothing like it existed previously in this region, it has become an iconic place.”

attention to detail Starting Point For an engineering graduate, a hotel seemed an unusual choice of business. However, the reason behind the decision to set up two hotels was mainly down to Sir Peter’s son Paul, who, following a few years at Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland, which specialises in hospitality and business studies, decided he wanted to become a hotelier; Sir Peter decided that the family should give the industry a try. Originally from Croydon (then a small country town), Sir Peter had studied electronics at university. His first job was at an electronics company in Swindon selling micro electronics around the country, “I got bored and went on to do a ‘post grad’ in nuclear physics and aeronautical engineering, but that was when I learned my mathematics were not quite up to scratch and I went back to that old science called management.” Sir Peter’s father was the Chairman of Stanley Gibbons,

Until then there had been numerous pirate radio stations such as Radio Caroline, “In the end the Government realised they couldn’t stop it. They had to legislate which was a huge beneficial move nationally.”

the world’s leading stamp trader, “I learned a bit about business from my father and I learned the rest through the university of life.” Sir Peter set up his first business at school, where he spent his spare time building specialist radios which made enough money to get him through university. In 1968, aged 30, Sir Peter set up his own company called Micro Consultants in Newbury.

Classic FM Sir Peter had been working in digital graphics and broadcasting for some time as the Chief Executive of ‘Quantel’, a leading Newbury digital production company. In 1992, he took a further leap into broadcasting and founded Classic FM, “I was looking around for something to keep me busy and I love classical music.” In 1990 Margaret Thatcher introduced a new broadcasting act making it possible for three national stations to run legally.

There were three stations; pop, speech and classical, and three frequencies, but only one was FM. After a discussion it was decided that classical music needed the FM frequency the most. Sir Peter believes this is the business he was most proud of, "Classic FM brings pleasure to millions and even though I've recently left, it is still great and I still play it in my office."

The Peter Michael Winery The Peter Michael Winery rests on a volcanic ridge in Knights Valley, Sonoma County which Sir Peter often visits. In 1972, whilst visiting California on a business trip he fell in love with the place and decided to buy some land for himself and his family, “After several years I bought a square mile on the

This logo appears on every bottle of wine they make, along with the statement; ‘mountain vineyards, limited production and classical winemaking’.

side of a mountain and by 1982 we had cleared the space and planted a vineyard.” Sir Peter has always found wine interesting, particularly the story of ‘The Judgement of Paris’ where a blind wine tasting in Paris resulted in a global awareness of Californian wine.

Sir Peter believes that having a partner has been one of the main factors behind his success, “No matter how intelligent you are, you need a partner. You need a partner in business who

complements your strengths and weaknesses and you need a partner in your private life.” They have two sons; Paul, who with his wife Emily, is very involved with The Vineyard and David, who currently teaches English in Germany. Sir Peter’s advice for anyone planning to set up a business is “It’s important you don’t know too much about it because if you sit and think about it too much you will never get around to doing it. Networking is also very important. If I had known how important networking was when I first started I would have done a lot more of it. It is about building up a network of contacts you trust and mine has served me very well.”

A speciality you can only find at The Vineyard is the ‘Judgement Dinner’, seven courses each served with two glasses of wine; one from California and one from France. You can then vote for your favourite. The first wine produced by the Peter Michael Winery was ‘Mon Plaisir’ Chardonnay where they adopted the logo of the native flower of California; the poppy.

Judgement of Paris In 1976 something massive happened in the world of wine which triggered Sir Peter Michael’s interest in Californian wine and is now an inspiration for The Vineyard. Stephen Spurrier, a British wine merchant who had recently been acquainted with Californian wine, set up a blind wine tasting at a Paris Hotel and invited 12 well-known figures in the French wine industry to judge 10 different wines; five from France and five from California. They all felt that the test would be pointless as French wine would surpass Californian. To their shock and surprise they chose both red and white wines from California. From then on the wine world took California seriously.

Kennet School is an exceptional and vibrant place of learning.

Kennet School We take our responsibility for inspiring the citizens of the future very seriously, as well as providing a first class education. Kennet School has long been widely involved in the life of our local community, from work with other schools to our children supporting community groups and voluntary organisations. Take for example, our annual work to support the NWN Over 80s’Appeal, where each year thousands of pounds are raised. This brings together our competitive House system for the common good and our four Houses always undertake charitable work of their own every year. This year we are working to support our partner school St Francis, in Rang’ala, Kenya; a relationship which brings immense benefit to pupils and staff in both schools. We are able to share some of our success and expertise and in return have a timely reminder of the value and importance of a superb education.

Nepal Australia On the second Sunday of May, the chrysanthemum is traditionally given to mothers by their children. The chrysanthemum is seen as the traditional Mother’s Day flower as the name ends in “mum” and men will often wear the flower in their lapels in honour of mothers.

“Mata Tirtha Aunsi” (“Mother Pilgrimage fortnight”) is a festival to commemorate and show respect for mothers. It is also a special day to remember mothers who have passed away. It is traditional to go in pilgrimage to the Mata Tirtha ponds, 8km west of Kathmandu. There are two ponds, one for bathing and a smaller one “to look upon one’s mother’s face”.

China India Mothers are traditionally given great importance in Indian culture and so the day is filled with special events in honour of mothers and is called “Matru Din”.

In the UK, Mother’s Day is typically celebrated on the second Sunday of March known as Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world but the date and meaning differ from country to country.

Italy Italians celebrate "La Festa della Mamma" with a feast and a heart-shaped cake.

Mother's Day is becoming increasingly popular in China and it is a particularly busy day for florists as people rush to flower shops to buy a bunch of carnations for their mother.

The Benefits of Massage in pregnancy Not only can a massage during pregnancy help you to relax, massage can also help support your body and mind during a time of major physiological and emotional change. Massage is especially beneficial during the second and third trimester where a woman’s body undergoes various stresses and strains. Massage also has many benefits for a baby as the skin is the first organ to develop in the womb and they can feel and communicate through skin from early on. Recent studies have shown that unborn babies are affected by any stress their mother is experiencing, therefore it is vital that stress levels remain at a minimum throughout the whole pregnancy and massage is hugely beneficial in achieving this.

Reiki is a form of energy healing that requires no specific spiritual alignment. Reiki is an ancient treatment, revived in Japan in the early 1900’s for relieving aches, stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

If you are feeling tired, stressed or suffering from ill health, Reiki could be for you! During a Reiki treatment, the client lies fully clothed on a comfortable padded couch. Each session lasts between 45 and 60 minutes.

Treat yourself to an hour of deep relaxation, with soft music and the soothing and healing touch of a Reiki practitioner. You can receive a treatment in Chieveley, or at your own home.

noise? Imagine an irritating sound. Now imagine having that irritating sound in your ear constantly. That is what many people with tinnitus have to deal with every day and the number of people in the UK with tinnitus is rising. It is believed that 10% of the UK adult population have permanent tinnitus, according to the British Tinnitus Association (BTA). The BTA are trying to raise awareness through Tinnitus Awareness Week (4 – 10 February) about the work Tinnitus Support Groups do. The event will also hope to encourage people in areas with no support group to set one up.

Tinnitus is also more noticeable when the person is in quiet surroundings such as at night when they are trying to sleep. This can lead to sufferers being sleep deprived and developing depression and other health problems.

BTA Groups Co-ordinator Claire Arthur says "Tinnitus support groups can offer a lifeline, enabling people to share experiences, find different ways of coping and begin to help others to do the same. At a time when the NHS is undergoing unprecedented change, the role of support groups is a crucial one."

What is Tinnitus? Tinnitus is the perception of noises in one or both ears, or in the head, which has no external source. It is not a disease or illness but a symptom generated within the auditory system. The noise may be low, medium or high pitched and there may be single or multiple sources. It may be continuous or come and go.

Support

noises. Tinnitus is common in all age groups. There are also different types of tinnitus such as pulsatile tinnitus where the noise beats in time with the person’s pulse or temporary tinnitus which people may experience when they have a cold or have recently been to a music concert. The BTA advises anyone who believes they have tinnitus to see a GP as it can be associated with hearing loss, exposure to loud noise, stress and anxiety

If you are interested in setting up a local support group contact Claire on 0114 250 9933 or email Claire@tinnitus.org.uk.

and ear infections. It is rarely an indication of a serious disorder. After being diagnosed, a GP will refer a tinnitus patient to specialist ENT and Audiology services. Within specific services, patients should then have access to information, counselling, hearing loss correction, and sound therapy and relaxation techniques.

Causes There is no exact cause or cure for tinnitus. It can be brought on through a build up of ear wax or prolonged exposure to loud

Tinnitus is mostly reported as a buzzing, ringing or whistling. Go to www.localbuzzmagazine.com to hear a sound clip of what tinnitus sounds like.

Watching a pet grow old can be heartbreaking but unfortunately, like human beings, old age is not something you can prevent. The best thing is to know what the signs are for health problems that may affect your pet in old age and make them as comfortable as possible.

Caring for

elderly pets

The signs As your pet gets older you may notice a change in their behaviour. They will begin to slow down and dogs may become noticeably less interested in walks. This may not just be a sign of old age but they could also have arthritis. Other symptoms include favouring a limb, difficulty going from sit to stand, sleeping more, having stiff or sore joints, a reluctance to run, jump or climb stairs, weight gain, decreased activity, behaviour or attitude changes and being less alert. If your pet appears to have these symptoms for more than two weeks they need to see the veterinarian for an assessment. This will include a physical examination and possibly X-rays. Once you have obtained a diagnosis, a treatment plan can begin.

with you and develop a suitable treatment plan after an assessment. Treatments

Following a visit to your vet they may recommend seeing a chartered animal physiotherapist who will discuss the problem http://pet.askbuzz.co.uk

may include massage to tight muscles, joint mobilisations and stretches. They will also advise on suitable exercises and give you valuable advice such as avoiding walking down steep hills, down stairs or jumping out of a car for dogs with arthritis of the elbow. Exercise may need to be modified to get the best results. With an arthritic dog, little and regular exercise is better than a long walk once a week. Dogs can also under go joint replacements if their arthritis is too severe. Following orthopaedic surgery, a chartered animal physiotherapist can guide the rehabilitation process such as specific strengthening exercises to get the best out of the operation.

With everyone wanting to escape winter, now is the perfect time to book your holiday and have something to look forward to later in the year.

Cruises are fast becoming one of the most popular choices of getaways in the UK. There are now cruises to suit everyone with destinations ranging from Canada to the Caribbean. Some of these cruises begin in foreign ports and some begin and end in Britain.

Ask yourself The cruise you choose has to suit the needs of you and your party whether you are travelling with family or friends, alone or as a couple. Other questions to ask yourself are do you wish to dress for dinner every night or do you prefer something more casual? Are you looking for an active holiday or a relaxed one with lots of spa treatments to indulge in? If you’re looking for lots of entertainment and activities choose a large resort ship, perfect for families and large parties. Choosing a smaller ship may not have as much to offer on board but will allow you to travel to smaller ports in more locations. If you prefer a quiet cosy trip then choose an expedition or tall ship. Some ships are even themed to suit your interests such as cookery, wine, fashion, photography and more.

Overgrown evergreen hedges can be cut at the end of the month. Do one side this year and one in two years' time. It will look pretty awful until it regrows but it will be worth the wait. Compost all the waste you create in the garden, but remember to chop it up well. Consider investing in a shredder if you create a lot of bulky waste. Layer last year’s compost on top of the soil around shrubs and roses (known as mulch).

Wheels of Grace By Tania Crosse A poignant account of one village’s war and the endurance of those waiting for news of their loved ones. Grace Dannings has lived her entire life in the safe and idyllic Dartmoor Village of Walkhampton. A farm maid, her wish is for nothing to ever change the content and happy life she leads. But in May 1914, Grace’s world changes as the outbreak of war leaves no one untouched among Grace’s family, friends and neighbours.

“Wheels of Grace” will be Tania Crosse’s next novel and will be published in March this year. An author of many novels, mainly set in Victorian times or the 1950s, Tania has been largely inspired by her repeat visits to Dartmoor to absorb its fascinating landscape and history. Tania and her husband partly reside in West Berkshire and her cottage on Dartmoor where Tania often retreats to write. Find out about Tania’s novels at www.tania-crosse.co.uk

Contact your local West Berkshire Library in order to pick up or reserve your copy of “Wheels of Grace” plus Tania Crosse’s previous titles. http://www.westberks.gov.uk/libraries - 01635 519900. Published in Hardback by Robert Hale

Buzz Magazine encourages local trade All businesses are part of a community and if the community sticks together and purchases materials and services within the community then it will become more robust. This happened in a city in the UK during the 1990s when local businesses were slowly persuaded to buy legal services locally rather than London. Within a decade this particular city became the most important legal centre outside the capital! This proves our mission which is to encourage local trade as your local independent magazine. Remember to give Buzz a call 01635 200006 next time you want to promote your business. We are here to help and work together with you. A BLAST FROM THE PAST

A brief history of In the Berkshire countryside, halfway between Newbury and Reading, is the idyllic village of Aldermaston. In the 11th Century the Achard family took control of the land and established a manor and the church of St Mary the Virgin. The manor passed through several families including the Forsters family, whose tomb can be found in the village church. The Congreve Family inherited the estate in 1752 and were given

the Eagles gates located at the top of the village street as payment for a gambling debt. The last resident Lord of the Manor, Mr Keyser, owned every building in Aldermaston. He also established the local school and would take the children for seaside school trips. Following his death, it took a long time to divide the land into sellable lots. A week into World War II, the whole village was put up for auction and sold for £10,000.

International importance Old Village Farm has been the location of a wood yard since the 1930s, preparing local willow for the production of cricket bats around the world. Reject wood was sent to the nearby pottery to be used in the kiln. Aldermaston Pottery was established by Alan CaigerSmith in 1955. Originally the village’s blacksmith forge, the workshop quickly grew as Alan employed more potters and held a retrospective exhibition across the UK in the mid 1980s. Despite the pottery’s closure in 2006, many pieces of Aldermaston Pottery can now be found in national museums. The village is also well known nationally for the Atomic Weapons Establishment and the Aldermaston Marches which campaign for nuclear disarmament.
