Building plans for success

The team at Archis Design Group Inc. is commited to a single principle –“the search for design excellence”. (SLD)

When you pick up the telephone to request the architectural services offered by Archis Design Group Inc., you would have made the right choice in choosing this leading firm.

The friendly, capable, focused, skilled, and professionally well-educated multifaceted team of talented individuals with over two decades of working in the architecture, and the master planning sector are always ready to provide excellent comprehensive services in Project Management, Architecture, Interior Design, Master Planning and Urban Design.

Archis has a depth and scope of experience in its staff and technical resources designed to cope with a range of projects from master planning of communities to design of the family

home. Flexibility in the deployment of these resources is the key to the efficient and accurate execution of the variety of projects that the firm has been able to undertake successfully.

The firm also has vast experience in the hospitality, commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional architectural sectors, as well as the master planning aspects of these sectors. When you contact the Archis team, you are choosing a team fully integrated into the requirements of the industry and typically working with a project team of qualified and accomplished consultants. This experience gives Archis Design Group Inc., the resolve to perform exceptionally on any project.

The firm’s technical office standards are built around the international building code, and Archis’

management and staff pride themselves on the high-quality architectural documents produced. The team deals in the full gamut of architectural projects and in every case, applies a single principle – “the search for design excellence”.

You can be assured that the normal design development and construction documentation phases that follow a successful design would be executed under the aegis of Archis’ project team organisation supplemented by senior architects and the requisite number of technical staff.

THE EXTENDED REPEAT client list of Archis Design Group Inc. is testament to the excellent quality of work produced. At right, one of their many projects White Sands Beach Condos.

The fact that Archis Design Group Inc. has an extended repeat client list is indicative of the excellent service rendered.

This being the case, associate director and senior registered architect, Andre Brathwaite believes the company will continue its current successful trajectory and continue to make inroads in the architectural industry, both locally and regionally.

Brathwaite is also pleased that positive feedback from clients means that the team at Archis continues to meet the demands of clients and the international standards of the industry.

With over 20 years’ experience, Brathwaite is also of the view that the local architectural industry has gone through some changes over the years, and that more contemporary designs now dot the Barbadian landscape.

“We have been more or less “getting there for a long time,” he said. “We are not yet quite there. In Barbados, we have started to explore the use of more building materials and incorporating more building styles. We now have a good mix of contemporary and ‘Barbadiana’ type residences and commercial properties. However, we are still behind when we compare ourselves with places such as the United States of America and Europe. Most of our architecture is driven by costs compared to places like Trinidad and

Tobago and Jamaica. We are steadily getting out of that comfort level.”

Brathwaite also believes that the colourful buildings now found across the island speak to the changes newer homeowners have been making in terms of experimenting with bolder and brighter colours – even going for a variety of colours, and not just one on exteriors.

He shared, “For years most of our buildings were primarily white. Now people are experimenting with colours and design styles both at a corporate, large-scale and residential level. Our landscape is definitely being changed and this is a good thing.”

Brathwaite also stressed that more people are conscious of space and square footage, especially as they age.

As they get older, people want more manageable space, and for some a small footprint on a small portion of land is enough. Of course, there are others who want large homes. Generally, people are becoming more creative with spaces and how best to utilise what they have. This too is a good thing.”

The veteran architect also pointed out that from a commercial viewpoint, business owners were looking to construct larger buildings.

As to the current state of the island’s construction sector, Brathwaite said there is clearly a building boom taking place.

“There is a building boom. There is no question about it. Lots of houses and commercial buildings are being constructed and Government, has also been part of this process – providing Barbadians with lots of middle- and low-income homes.”

Brathwaite knows that Archis Design Group Inc. will continue to be a key player in architectural design and construction in and outside of Barbados, and looks forward to serving clients both near and far. (CH)

Our work speaks for itself

Archis Design Group Inc. is making an indelible mark in Barbados’ and the region’s architectural industry, and leading directors Albert Best and Adrian Forde can only envision the company continuing to do so as it marks 25 years in operation.

“We plan to continue doing what we are doing, servicing both Barbados and the region. We have worked in several countries. My first overseas project was actually in New York, before I returned to Barbados in 1997,” Best shared.

Both Best and Forde worked with a local architectural firm before forming the successful company in 1998.

The two are convinced that Archis will acquire a greater share of the local and regional architectural markets and they are already preparing themselves as the building boom in Barbados continues.

The company’s local portfolio is impressive. Elegant, grand, historic, massive, modern, stylish, ornate, luxurious, beautiful, and stunning buildings dot the local landscape due to Archis’ skilled team. The architectural designs make significant statements as is the norm for projects undertaken by the company. Clean lines and minimalistic designs can be seen on many modern-day properties and other awe-inspiring buildings capture one’s attention.

The directors share that among some of the properties with the extraordinary design styles of the Archis’ team include the breathtaking Ocean Two Resort and Residences at Dover, Christ Church, the beautifully designed Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, the all-inclusive Sea Breeze Hotel on Maxwell Coast Road, Christ Church, White Sands Beachfront Condominiums at St Lawrence, Christ Church, Bandstan Manor at The Garrison, St Michael, the

modern Warrens Healthcare Complex at Warrens, St Michael, and the stylish Capri Condominiums in Christ Church, with its lush surroundings – to name a few.

According to Best and Forde, their client list includes among others, Bayview Hospital, Barbados Port Inc., Divi Southwinds Beach Resort, the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc., Sagicor Life Inc. and Fortress Fund, the Barbados Defence Force, Preconco Limited, the Ministry of Education Technological and Vocational Training, attorney at law Junior Allsopp, PVH Consultants, the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, the Ministry of Health, Ocean Two Partnership Limited.

“The local market is our primary market, and will always remain our primary market,” Best disclosed.

The overseas market

While many may be aware of Archis’ designs and construction work in Barbados, some may not be aware of the many overseas projects this leading architectural firm has undertaken.

The company’s first overseas project was in Trinidad and Tobago, where they joined forces with a developer in the twin-island state.

“The designs were completed, even though some of the projects never came to full completion. What we did was to complete the Motor Vehicle Authority Complex in Caroni, Trinidad and Tobago, in collaboration with an overseas architect.

“In St Lucia, we designed the National Diagnostic Facility and completed major development for the Ministry of Housing in St Vincent and the Grenadines. In this case, we did the designs only,” Best explained.

“We are currently working on a World Bank project in St Vincent which should

The role of an architect is vital to building design and, in some cases, construction. It is usually an architect’s role to plan, design and oversee the construction of any building.

Practising architecture is to provide services in connection with the design of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings that have human occupancy or use as their principal purpose. In some cultures, the architect is referred to as the chief builder.

The professional requirements for architects vary from location to location. Here in Barbados, architects are registered with the Barbados Institute of Architects. They must undergo specialised training consisting of advanced education, internship for practical experience to earn a licence to practise architecture and both practical, technical, and academic requirements for becoming an architect. The formal study of architecture in academic institutions is key and plays a vital role in the development of the profession.

Qualifications and requirements

In Barbados, as in the case of most developed countries, only qualified individuals with an appropriate licence, certification, or registration with the Architects Registration Board can practise architecture. Most architects on the island are members of the Barbados Institute of Architects.

The qualifications and requirements to practise architecture in Barbados are that one must first acquire a professional degree in architecture which takes five to six years. One must then undergo a minimum of three years of internship, postgraduate, and take a three-part professional written and oral examination which is referred to as the Barbados Architects Registration Examination (BARE).

Students interested in pursuing a career in architecture can concentrate on mathematics, physics, geography, and art.

Design role

The architect, once hired by a client, is responsible for creating a design

concept that meets the requirements of that client and provides a facility suitable to the required use. The architect must meet with and put questions to the client, to ascertain all

which should be completed by 2025,” Best disclosed.

In addition, the directors informed that Archis designed a major golf course in Aruba, several housing developments in Grenada, and Master planning in St Kitts, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. Major restoration was also carried out on properties in Rodney Bay, St Lucia.

Looking towards the future, Best stressed,” Our futuristic plan is to expand on what we are doing throughout the region and capture the full regional Caricom Community (CARICOM) market.

The two directors who spoke of starting Archis Design Group Inc. with just the two of them at Howell’s Cross Road, The Ivy, St Michael, are pleased with the success of the business.

“It was just the two of us, now we have a team of 17, “Best disclosed. He added, “We know that architects are the CEOs of the built environment. We are the leaders, the ones who develop the script – whether it is from the Master Plan or the built environment, whether structures, parks or open places, our purpose is always to design for human comfort, whether for home, work, or play.”

Best and Forde hold the view that there is still lots of misrepresentation about the profession.

“It takes about ten years to become a registered architect. Many people do not know this. There is quite a lot of misrepresentation of the profession and there is still lots of public education that is needed so people understand what we do,” Best stressed.

Pleased to have reached their current landmark, the directors thank their clientele and business associates for their patronage over the years. (CH)

From a dream to reality

• From Page 9C.

requirements of the planned project.

A design proposal is generally expected to be both imaginative and pragmatic. Much depends upon the time, place, finance, culture, and available crafts and technology in which the design takes place. The extent and nature of these expectations will vary. Foresight is a prerequisite when designing buildings as it is a very complex and demanding undertaking.

Any design concept during the early stage of its generation must consider a great number of issues and variables including qualities of space(s), the end-use and life cycle of these proposed spaces, connections, relations, and aspects between spaces, including how they are put together and the impact of proposals on the immediate and wider locality. Selection of appropriate materials and technology must be considered, tested, and reviewed at an early stage in the design to ensure there are no setbacks.

The site and its surrounding environment, as well as the culture and history of the place, will also influence the design. The design must also balance increasing concerns with environmental sustainability.

A key part of the design is that the architect often must consult with engineers, surveyors, and other specialists throughout the design, ensuring that aspects such as structural supports and air conditioning elements are coordinated.

The control and planning of construction, which can also be done by the architectural firm enlisted, is also a part of these consultations. Coordination of the different aspects involves a high degree of specialised communication, including advanced computer technology such as building information modelling (BIM), computer-aided design (CAD), and cloud-based technologies. Finally, at all times, the architect must report back to the client who may have reservations or recommendations that might introduce further variables into the design.

Architects also deal with local jurisdictions regarding regulations and building codes. The architect might need to comply with local planning and zoning laws such as required setbacks, height limitations, parking requirements, transparency requirements (windows), and land use. As in most jurisdictions, as in the case in Barbados, there must be adherence to design and guidelines.

Previously, architects employed drawings to illustrate and generate design proposals. While conceptual sketches are still widely used by architects, computer technology has now become the industry standard. Furthermore, design may include the use of photos, collages, prints, linocuts, 3D scanning technology, and other media in design production. Increasingly, computer software is shaping how architects work. Building information technology allows for the creation of a virtual building that serves as an information database for the sharing of design and building information throughout the life cycle of the building’s design, construction, and maintenance. Virtual reality (VR) presentations are becoming more common for visualising structural designs and interior spaces from the point-of-view perspective.

Since modern buildings are known to place carbon into the atmosphere, increasing controls are being placed on buildings and associated technology to reduce emissions, increase energy

efficiency, and make use of renewable energy sources. Renewable energy sources may be designed into the proposed building by local or national renewable energy providers. As a result, the architect is required to remain abreast of current regulations that are continually being updated. The architect is also increasingly being required to provide initiatives in a wider environmental sense. Examples of this include making provisions for low-energy transport, natural daylighting instead of artificial lighting, natural ventilation instead of air conditioning, pollution, and waste management, use of recycled materials, and employment of materials that can be easily recycled.

Construction role

As the design becomes more advanced and detailed, specifications and detailed designs are made of all the elements and components of the building. Techniques in the production of a building are continually advancing which places a demand on the architect to ensure that he or she remains up to date with these advances.

Depending on the client’s needs and the jurisdiction’s requirements, the spectrum of the architect’s services during each construction stage may be extensive.

Many times, mandatory certification or assurance of the completed work or part of works, is required. This demand for certification entails a high degree of risk; therefore, regular inspections of the work as it progresses on site are required to ensure that the design complies with and follows all relevant statutes and permissions.

Architects play a vital role in the design and construction of the buildings and spaces where we live, work, learn, and relax. They are involved in every stage of a project, from planning and drafting specifications to ensuring that the finished product meets safety standards.

With a variety of specialisations, from landscape architecture to green architecture, each type of architect brings a unique skill set to the table. Ultimately, the role of an architect is to help turn ideas into reality, and to make a lasting impact on our communities and the built environment. (CH/Wikipedia)

“There are so many good things about Archis Design Group Inc. I am overjoyed to be a part of such an amazing team.”

These words from Administrative Officer Natalie T. Adams are indicative of the love she has for her employers and colleagues.

Adams joined the company in 2003 and has never looked back. She admitted to loving the camaraderie which she enjoys with her colleagues, and like other employees, believes the team is one big, happy family.

One of two administrative officers, Adams was promoted to her current post in 2017.

She can be described as well-rounded and skilled.

She is certified in the Quick Books Accounting Programme and holds a diploma in Secretarial Studies from the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology. Both certifications give her the ability to take on any task at hand within the Administration Department.

Adams commends the management team for always having their doors opened to staff and for their guidance and leadership.

As she looked back over the years, Adams stressed, “We have certainly expanded, and we have taken on some large-scale projects. This speaks of progress. I am simply delighted to serve.” (CH)
