We are fortunate to have excellent archaeological evidence for both houses and tombs from this formative period. The earliest megalithic tombs show a shared common belief system, while their large rectangular houses portray another aspect of their settled lifestyles. By examining both monument types, through their architecture, associated finds and distribution, a surprisingly full understanding of the lifestyle of these early people can be constructed. In this talk our knowledgeable facilitators will talk us through how Irish archaeological finds paint for us a vivid picture of daily life giving us real insight into the social existence of those who came before us. rachel croash Volume 19 | Issue 3 | autumn 2014

Interview with the artist Rachel Croash Soprano Rachel Croash is a graduate of NUI Maynooth and recently completed the Master in Music Performance Degree at the Royal Irish Academy of Music where she studied with Mary Brennan and Dearbhla Collins. She has performed in recital for Lismore Opera Festival, Opera Ireland, Opera Theatre Company and The Contemporary Music Centre. Operatic roles for the RIAM include Miss. Wordsworth in Britten’s Albert Herring, Parasha in Stravinsky’s Mavra, The Fox in Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen and Woman in Jonathan Dove’s Greed. Other roles include Gorm in Flatpack by Tom Lane for the Dublin Fringe Festival, Annina in Verdi’s La Traviata for Wexford Festival Opera, Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and Banana 2 in Brian Irvine’s ‘Things we throw away’ for Wide Open Opera. Rachel is a multiple prize-winner at the Feis Ceoil, was a recipient of the John McCormack Society Bursary and has also been a finalist in the NCH Bernadette Greevy Vocal Bursary. We talk to Soprano Rachel Croash about her exciting career to date, what has shaped her artistic path thus far and what it is like to be a young Soprano in Ireland today... 10

rachel croash Volume 19 | Issue 3 | autumn 2014

Rachel, you will be performing in the 2014 ESB Feis Ceoil Young Platform Series here in the National Concert Hall this September. What does taking part in Feis Ceoil mean to you? As a student at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, the Feis Ceoil is one of the highlights of the year. It provides a wonderful platform for young musicians in Ireland to perform and compete at the highest level. The run up to the Festival is such an exciting time in the Academy as Feis fever takes over! There is a wonderful buzz about the place as everyone is working hard in preparation of the big event. It is a prestigious festival with fantastic prizes to be won so everyone really wants to achieve their best. Last year I was the winner of the Lieder Prize and this year I was lucky enough to win the Nancy Calthorpe Cup, The Mrs.P.J Geoghan Memorial Cup and Gus Smith 1,000 Award, and as a finalist in the Gervase Elwes Memorial Cup I was awarded the inaugural Mollie Murray Award for Most Promising Singer. Who/what inspires you as a performer? For me, it is really inspiring to look at the Feis Cups and see the names of all the singers that have won over the years. As a young performer I look to other Irish singers who are having huge success internationally and performing at the best Opera Houses in the world. When I see those who have started their operatic journey in the same way I have this inspires me to work hard and hopefully one day I’ll be up there with them! What is your favourite thing about being a singer? Well, most importantly my favourite thing about being a singer is that I’m doing something that I love! I love music and whether I am studying a score, in the rehearsal room or on stage I love what I am doing and feel lucky to be able to pursue this profession. What I love most about opera is the variety of characters you get to portray, so far this year I have been a Male Fox, a Poor Woman, a feisty Gypsy and a Banana! It really is so much fun! What would you name as some of your career highlights so far? I have been fortunate to have had some wonderful opportunities so far. Last year I sang the role of Annina in La Traviata at Wexford Festival Opera; it was an amazing experience as a young singer to be involved in such a prestigious Festival, surrounded by world class talent. I think the highlight so far was singing Frasquita in Carmen with John Wilson and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and Patricia Bardon in the title role. To be singing on stage in the National Concert Hall beside one of Irelands greatest Opera singers was just magic, and what made it more fantastic was that some of the other roles were performed by some of my best friends, Mezzo Gemma Ni Bhriain, Tenor Patrick Hyland and Baritone Gyula Nagy, we all started our training at the RIAM at the same time so it was really wonderful that we were all up there enjoying such an amazing experience together. 11

rachel croash Volume 19 | Issue 3 | autumn 2014

Have you had any more unusual roles and/or costumes you could tell us about? This year I played ‘The Fox’ in the RIAM’S production of Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, the unusual thing about this role being that The Fox of Course is a boy! While it is common for Mezzo’s to play trouser roles, as a Soprano it is not something I had experienced before so I was a bit nervous! What helped me hugely in getting in to the character was my amazing costume, designed and created by Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) student, Connor Dalton. The RIAM and IADT have a wonderful collaborative partnership which involves IADT students designing and creating the costumes for the Opera. It is a wonderful process for both the singers and the designers to delve into the characters to come up with stunning costumes and the results have been amazing over the years. It gives us a real insight and appreciation for everything that happens behind the scenes in opera! If you had the chance, where would you most like to perform and who would you most like to perform on stage with (living and/or passed)? I would love to perform at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. I was there earlier this year and had the opportunity to attend a rehearsal, since then I have the bug! It’s a beautiful Opera House and they produce amazing, world class work. In terms of who I’d like to perform with, I have a list a mile long! In a dream situation I would love to sing Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro with Renee Flemming singing the Countess, Gerald Finley singing The Count and Ann Murray singing Marcellina ...it’s not a lot to ask, is it?! What are the greatest challenges for young musicians trying to build careers in Ireland today? Has anything in the past years improved/helped young artist? I think the future for young musicians in Ireland is bright. I feel that performance opportunity is the most important issue for young musicians as we delve into the professional world. There has been quite a bit of opportunity this year as there have been a number of fantastic productions by companies such as Opera Theatre Company, Lismore Opera Festival, Wide Open Opera and Cork Operatic Society. The foundation of Irish Youth Opera is a very exciting development for young singers and Opera Theatre Company has just launched a new Young Artist Programme. Competitions such as the Feis and the National Concert Hall Bernadette Greevy Vocal Bursary also play a big role in helping young artists as they provide a national platform for emerging talent. What does the National Concert Hall mean to you? The National Concert Hall is the most prestigious venue in Ireland for Classical Music. When people think of the NCH they think talent, quality, and excellence. It is where all of us young musicians in Ireland aspire to be, so to be able to perform there is really exciting!

12

rachel croash Volume 19 | Issue 3 | autumn 2014

What would you like to achieve artistically in the next few years? I have recently completed my Master in Music Performance Degree at the RIAM and I am now hoping to start auditioning for Opera Studios. Being a young artist in an Opera Studio is essentially an apprenticeship, a chance to improve your artistry whilst being immersed in the professional world of Opera. I also want to start competing in international competitions, thankfully the Feis has prepared me somewhat for what this will be like, and so I am both terrified and excited at the prospect! In the next few years I hope to be making my debut at Opera Houses around Europe... and hopefully getting to sing at home too! Where can we see you performing in the near future? In September I am looking forward to returning to Wexford Festival Opera where I will sing one of the bridesmaids in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Trial by Jury and I am also very excited to be making my debut with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in December at the National Concert Hall. You can see Rachel perform at the National Concert Hall on September 29th @ 8pm as part of the ESB Feis Ceoil Young Platform Series 2014, and again on December 16th with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christopher Bell in ‘Christmas is Coming’. Tickets available on 014086777 or www.nch.ie.

Feature - NEVEN MAGUIRE autumn RECIPE Volume 19 | Issue 3 | autumn 2014

Roast Pumpkin Risotto with Rocket Pesto A comforting, healthy Italian-style recipe as perfect for a cosy night is as it would be for impressing company. Pumpkin can be more than a Halloween decoration and here Neven shows us how it can be an irresistible ingredient and the star of the show. This recipe would work as a supper course, a side-dish or a vegetarian treat. Top-tips: • If you don’t have a mini blender or liquidiser to make the rocket pesto, just finely chop the rocket using a large sharp knife and stir in the Parmesan and olive oil until combined. • Don’t throw away the pumpkin seeds, instead slowly roast them at a low temperature and use to add to salads and cereals for a tasty, healthful crunch. Serves 4 Ingredients: • 1 small pumpkin about 800g (1lb 13oz), peeled, seeded and cut into small dice • 4 tbsp. olive oil • 1.5 litres (2.5 pints) vegetable stock (page 225) • 75g (3oz) unsalted butter • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 small onion, thinly sliced • 2 tsp chopped fresh sage • 350g (12oz) Arborio rice (risotto) 18

• 150ml (.25 pint) dry white wine • 1 tbsp. roughly chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Rocket pesto: • 50ml (2fl oz.) rapeseed oil • 25g (1oz) rocket • 1 small garlic clove, roughly chopped • 2 tbsp. freshly grated Parmesan • 1.5 tbsp. toasted pine nuts • sea salt • freshly ground black pepper

Feature - NEVEN MAGUIRE autumn RECIPE Volume 19 | Issue 3 | autumn 2014

Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F/gas mark 6). Scatter the pumpkin cubes into a large roasting tin and drizzle over 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Roast for 15–20 minutes, or until tender. To make the rocket pesto, place the rapeseed oil in a mini blender or liquidiser with the rocket, garlic, Parmesan and pine nuts. Blend briefly to combine – it should retain some texture; you don’t want it to be too smooth. Season to taste, transfer to a bowl and cover with Clingfilm, then chill until ready to use. Pour the stock into a pan and bring up to a gentle simmer. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil and 50g (2oz) of the butter in a separate large pan. Add the garlic, onion and sage and cook over a medium heat for 4–5 minutes, until softened but not coloured, stirring occasionally. Increase the heat and add the rice, then cook for 1 minute, stirring continuously, until all of the grains are evenly coated and the rice is opaque. Pour in the wine and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring. Reduce the heat to medium and add a ladleful of warm stock. Allow it to reduce down, stirring until it’s completely absorbed. Continue to add the simmering stock a ladleful at a time, stirring frequently. Allow each ladleful of stock to be almost completely absorbed before adding the next ladleful until the rice is al dente – just tender but with a slight bite; this should take 20–25 minutes. To serve, stir in the remaining 25g (1oz) of butter and the parsley. Carefully fold in the roasted pumpkin, season to taste and divide among warmed wide-rimmed serving bowls. Drizzle each one with a little of the rocket pesto (any remaining pesto can be served separately in a small bowl) and garnish with the reserved Parmesan. Variations Mixed Mushroom Soak 25g (1oz) of dried cep or porcini mushrooms in 150ml (.25 pint) of warm water for 15 minutes. Pour the mushroom soaking liquid into the rice instead of wine. Chop the dried mushrooms and add them too. Slice 350g (12oz) mixed fresh mushrooms and sauté them in a knob of butter and 1 tablespoon of oil for 3–4 minutes. Fold into the risotto with a squeeze of lemon juice, chopped flat leaf parsley and the Parmesan cheese. Barley and Pea Replace the rice with barley and stir in 175g (6oz) of fresh or frozen peas for the last 3–4 minutes of the cooking time. Add chopped fresh parsley and season generously with black pepper to serve.

HOW YOUr support of THE NATIONAL CONCERT HALL makes a real impact! Volume 19 | Issue 3 | autumn 2014

Friends and Patron Circle members play an important role in supporting the National Concert Hall’s artistic programme and its education and outreach work in hospitals, communities and schools throughout Ireland. Three of these programmes in 2014 have included:

Surroundings Surroundings is an exciting and engaging audio-active project, developed by Slavek Kwi, and supported and funded by the National Concert Hall and St. Declan’s School. The aim of the programme is to awaken the child’s artistic sensibilities, with a specific focus on sound. Slavek works with children, some of whom have complex developmental difficulties including communication/speech and language difficulties, emotional/behavioural difficulties, ADHD and Asperger’s’ Syndrome, to develop communication skills through the medium of music. Children are invited into a permanent sound installation, where they are encouraged to improvise together in small groups, using a range of instruments and sound-making objects. Accompanied by a pre-recorded soundtrack, the children ‘feel’ the sounds they are playing, whilst simultaneously developing an awareness of their surroundings. The process focuses on heightening the children’s artistic sensitivity, and as Íde Tynan, Principal of St. Declan’s School, adds, “Improving their attention and memory span, increasing their tolerance and improving their self-esteem.” “The children benefit enormously from the opportunity afforded by this unique programme, which would not be possible without the continued support of the NCH.” 20

Make a lasting difference‌. A legacy is a uniquely valuable way to express your appreciation for the enjoyment and inspiration that the National Concert Hall offers to people from all walks of life. Your gift will make a meaningful contribution to our work, ensuring that the pleasure of music will be passed on to future generations. A legacy donation can help us continue to lift spirits and transform the lives of those who may not otherwise have access to the profound benefits of music.
