EDWINA GUCKIAN
On Friday May 3 Edwina Guckian will perform as part of the Tradition Now Series. Here she talks about her love of Sean-nós dancing, career to date and what we can expect from her upcoming performance:
When did you start Sean-nós dancing and why?
There wasn’t really an exact day or age that we started dancing in our family. It was just a part of life growing up at home. You learned to walk and talk, lilt a tune and dance a few steps.
How would you define Sean-nós dancing and what differentiates it from Irish dancing?
I’ll start by asking the question what is Irish dancing? For me it’s an umbrella of several styles of dance in Ireland. Two hands, set, sean-nós, old style step, modern step, céilí… they’re all Irish dance. What roughly defines Sean-nós dance is its free form; the spontaneity of responding to the music as you hear it, the musician responding to you. Close to the ground, percussive, dancing the tune so if the music stopped you’d still hear that tune in the feet. It’s very personal. You dance as yourself!
You set up Áirc Damhsa Culture Club for young people so they could be immersed in Irish traditions and culture. Why is this important to you? What impact does this immersion have on young people?
Our culture is a way of life. It’s something that has been passed down from one generation to the next, telling the story of the people gone before us. It’s ever changing and adapting to the current world but it always connects us to our people, our place, our music, song, dance, language. Giving children the chance to experience that, empowering them to create new things from it, for them to see their creative work today is the folklore and culture of the future is vital.
We are now in 20th year at Áirc Damhsa and over 8,000 children have passed through our doors and fields. The ideas, developments and work that has all been led by the children has been beyond anything I could have anticipated. So many cultural seeds have been sown that stay with them all their lives. A huge new community has been built by the children that brings the traditional arts out into the communities to the people and sees all generations fully engaging with it.
What has been your career highlight to date?
There has been many but the night at the NCH where I was awarded the Gradam Comaoine by TG4 is a night I’ll never forget. Having all my family and community from Leitrim in the audience and performing on the NCH stage with so many of my greatest musician friends and joined by 50 dancers from Áirc Damhsa. I also shared the stage with Dolores Keane, Tríona and Mairéad Ní Dhomhnaill, Paddy Glackin, Sarah Ghriallais, Diarmuid Ó Meachair, Connie O’Connell. The room was bursting with warmth and positive energy. It was a very special night.
What can people expect from your Tradition Now performance?
A house dance! Music, song, dance, stories from a time when people gathered in their houses to learn, share, socialise and celebrate. Until it became illegal! (Under the Public Dance Halls Act – 1935). I’ll be joined by many wonderful musicians and dancers from Áirc Damhsa.

KATIA AND MARIELLE LABÈQUE
On Saturday June 15 Katia and Marielle Labèque will perform Philip Glass’ Cocteau Trilogy as part of the National Concert Hall’s Perspectives Series.
Here are five things to know about the project:
1. From 1991-1996 Philip Glass created an opera triptych, which he described as an ‘homage’ to the writer and film director Jean Cocteau based on his prose and cinematic work: Orphée (1950), La Belle et la Bête (1946), and the novel Les Enfants terribles (1929) made into a film by director Jean-Pierre Melville in 1950.
2. In 2021, Katia and Marielle Labèque created the instrumental suites for two pianos taken from Philip Glass’s opera Les Enfants Terribles. Following its success, they asked Philip Glass and his music director Michael Riesman to complete the trilogy by applying the same method to Orphée and La Belle et la Bête.
3. As part of their creative process the sisters revisited the films of Cocteau. According to Marielle: ‘Watching the three Cocteau films again helped us enormously. The visual universe is extraordinary, and a great inspiration for your playing.’
4. At the invitation of The Philharmonie in Paris, the trilogy evolved into its current incarnation; a multisensory experience, with impressive stage design, chandelier and lighting effects. It is a co-production with the National Concert Hall, Barbican Centre, Cité Musicale - Metz, Opéra National de Bordeaux.
5. On working with the sisters, Glass has commented: ‘The Labèque sisters are tremendous. They’re great performers, and great interpreters. And they’re wonderful supporters of music – not only modern music, but just music. It was great to work with them.’
